Abstract

Method and Materials: This cross - sectional survey is carried out in pediatric clinic department of audiology faculty of rehabilitation, TMSU, on spring 1998. 102 top grade ranking children with normal hearing threshold

Results:1- The thresholds were not significantly different at any frequency (P>0.05) in test re-test trials.
2- The test minus re-test threshold for individual ears showed clinically reliable and acceptable range 0-10dB SPL for at least
99.74% of the ears at all frequencies.
3- The threshold differences between right & left cars in two test sessions were not significantly different (P>0.05) except for 14KHz.
4- High- frequency threshold in two test sessions showed no significant difference between girls & boys at all frequencies (P>0.05) (except for 16 & 20 KHz in right ear and 10 KHz in left ear).
Conclusion: This test can be used for evaluation of individual high-frequency threshold in all frequency as test re-tests tria1. Moreover, this test may use as a beneficial tool for monitoring different endogenous and exogenous auditory pathologies.
Consideration: it is found that this research is valid only among situation of this project. Any generalization needs further research.

Abstract

Background and Aim: High frequency audiometry (HFA) provides a valuable tool and optimal index for distinguishing and monitoring many pathologies of the ear. The purpose of this study was to measure the reliability of HFA threshold in children.
Materials and Methods : In this cross-sectional study , 100 normal-hearing children, of 7 to 13 years old, including 50 boys and 50 girls were examined with a Belton 2000 audiometer and Sennheiser HD 250 earphones in Pediatric Clinic  of Audiology Department, Faculty of Rehabilitation of Tehran University of Medical Sciences.
Results: The threshold differences between right and left ears in two test sessions, were not significantly different except for 14 KHz. HFA threshold in two test sessions showed no significant difference in all frequencies between girls and boys but 16 and 20 KHz in right ear and 10 KHz in left ear.
Conclusion : The test-retest thresholds for iudividual ears showed ±0-10 dB SPL for difference at least  in 99.74 % of ears at all frequencies that is clinically reliable and acceptable.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Lack of early detection of and intervention for infants hearing loss results in a significant delay in speech and language development. So auditory rehabilitation plays an important role in improving the diminished communication ability. One of the most successful auditory training approaches is the SKI-HI parent-infant program. The purpose of this study was preparation and evaluation of Farsi-Language SKI-HI program for under 3-year-old hearing impaired  children.
Materials and Methods: After translation and modification of the text of the program, fifteen under 3-year-old children with bilateral severe sensory hearing loss who were fitted with appropriate behind the ear hearing aids received intervention for 6 months. The levels of the auditory skills were measured pre and post intervention. Intervention Efficiency Index (IEI), Pretest Developmental Rate (PDR) and Proportional Change Index (PCI) were computed.
Results: The data indicated that there was a significant difference between means of IEI and PDR which were 0.87 and 0.31, respectively. PCI was 3.38 indicated that the children&aposs auditory skills developed at about 2.38 times higher rate after SKI-HI intervention than they did before.  PCI confidence interval showed that development in  the population is 1.46 to 3.30 times higher after SKI-HI intervention (with 95% probability) the rate of auditory skills.
Conclusion: The auditory training with Farsi-language SKI-HI Parent-Infant program may efficiently affect development of auditory skills of hearing impaired children.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Self-reported and questionaire method for hearing impairment assessment allow us to study and to detect the invisible related issues, while They can not be done by traditional audiometry procedures. The purpose of this study is to compare measurement of hearing handicap using self-reported and staff version of NHHI and hearing thresholds in nursing home residents.

Materials and Method: The study participants were 43 individuals, 23 males and 20 females, aged 45-95 years. Pure tone average were calculated after conventional Pure tone audiometry . the self- and staff- reported questionnaire were also fulfilled.

Results: Nine (20.9%) individuals have normal hearing, 6 (14%) have slight, 10 (23.3%) mild, 7 (16.3%) moderate, 6 (16.3%) moderate to severe, 4 (9.3%) severe, and 1 (2.3%) profound hearing loss. Mean score of self and of staff reported versions were 32.22 % +29.31 and 32.67% +30.98, respectively. According to Kruskal-wallis test, there were significant correlation between self-reported and hearing level and between staff-reported and hearing level. The Pierson coefficient variation test between self and staff-reported, and self-reported and hearing level, staff-reported and hearing level showed significant correlation.

Conclusion: The NHHI self assessment associated with other equipments significantly improved the identification and assessment of adults and elderly hearing handicap in nursing home residents. According to the study condition, it may be concluded that the self and staff version of NHHI questionnaire are significantly identical and can be used instead.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Speech is the essential need of the social life. To acquire that, children highly rely on the normal senses and speech full environment. The normal auditory senseis the most important need. Early amplification intervention in children with hearing difficulties is advised. Cochlear implant technology provides an effective help for hearing-impaired children in recent decades. With regards to new and limited implantation services in Iran, the effects of operation age on speech and language of implanted children was not studied yet. The purpose of this study was to compare articulation errors in cochlear implanted children with different operation age.
Materials and methods: In this cross-sectional study, ten cochlear implanted children before three and eleven after four years old were evaluated. The participants were without any anatomical, visual, and intelligence abnormality and 2.5-3 years was passed from their operation. Then, by using Picture Pho-netic Test (PPT), the articulation errors of individuals were extracted and for more evaluation of the er-rors and complete of PPT, we, also used their excited connected speech by presenting pictures. By application of t-test and using SPSS software, the data was analyzed.
Results: Data analysis indicated that, there was meaningful significant difference between substitute errors and whole errors in two gropes but there was not meaningful significant difference between de-stroyed errors in two gropes.
Conclusion: The children who undergoing operation after 4 years old had severed articulation disorder than other grope. These issues indicated that the earlier operation of children will lead to improve the speech skills and reduced the articulation errors.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Internal Evaluation means assessment of abilities and potentials. To promote the quality of education, research, health and finally rehabilitation is one of the most important roles and responsibilities of the universities. Promotion of quality of the theoretical and practical education for the Audiology students provides this major with its final goal that is to serve society. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the strength, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOTs) of the Audiology department and to identify the ways of diminishing weaknesses and threats.
Materials and Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted on undergraduates, postgraduates, graduates, academic staff, and the director of Audiology department in 9 areas, including management flowchart, educational programs, instructional methods and curriculum models, students, educational areas and equipments, graduate, academic staff, research, and treatment. Data were collected by questionnaires. Results were analyzed descriptively and were expressed in raw and percentage.
Results: The scores of areas in two measures were as follows: management flowchart 4.36 (87.31%), educational programs 4.17 (83.58%), instructional methods and curriculum models 4.01 (80.26%), students 3.43 (68.60%), educational areas and equipment 3.60 (72.11%), from the view of undergraduates, post graduates, faculties, graduates 3.60 (72.03%), academic staff 4.03 (80.6%), research 3.52 (70.4%), and treatment 4.54 (90.80%). The highest score was, therefore, of the treatment area and the lowest belonged to the educational area and equipments. The score of the Audiology department, as the main factor was 3.89 out of 5 which was 77.88%.
Conclusion: Audiology group total score indicates the desirable status that can be promoted to the most desirable if SWOTs are considered.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Neuroimaging techniques in audiovisual speech processing are innovative approach to neuroscience investigation that steadily influences the deep survey of highly mechanisms involved in this process. The purpose of this study was to evaluate brain activity via functional magnetic resonance imaging throughout audiovisual speech perception in Persian language.
Methods: Functional MRI was used to assess 19 normal 20-30 year old women while they had been presented syllable /ka/ visually and /pa/ auditory using block design method, in which it would provide two series of imaging, functional and T1-weighted. Subsequently, the results were analyzed and compared by FSL software.
Results: The results of this study pointed out that both middle and cortical regions of brain are activated in visual stimuli and its middle regions are activated in response to auditory stimuli. Hence, left anterior supramarginal, some parts of motor speech system including insular and cingulate cortex-precentral cortex were stimulated with visual stimulus and left posterior supramarginal as well as right supramarginal gyrus were stimulated with auditory stimulus. Moreover, in this investigation, McGurk effect was behaviorally proven in fifteen subjects.
Conclusion: It was hypothesized that the activation of unique region, supramarginal gyrus, with both audio and visual stimuli indicated the presence of commonplace region for phonologic processing of sensory inputs. In addition, auditory stimuli develop more intense activity and on the other hand, broaden-maximum voxel-as well as extra regions are demonstrated in response to visual stimuli. These points represent the unfamiliarity of normal individual brain to percept visual speech stimuli.

Abstract

Background and Aim: The temporal processing is one of the critical features in central auditory processing system the gap in noise (GIN) test is the appropriate clinical tool for appraisal of temporal resolution which in people with multiple sclerosis may encounter with complications. Consequently, the aim of this study was to compare the results of gap in noise test in 18 to 40-year-old patients with multiple sclerosis and normal participants.
Methods: This cross-sectional non-invasive cohort study was conducted on 20 patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (mean age: 28.9 years) and 26 healthy normal hearing participant (mean age: 27.7 years) in the age range 18 to 40 years. The approximate threshold and percent of corrected responses were obtained and then were analyzed using Student&aposs t-test.
Results: There was an increase in gap detection and decrease in percent of corrected responses in gap in noise test within multiple sclerosis patients in comparison with normal people (p<0.0001). Moreover, there were a correlation of 78% between increasing disease duration and approximate threshold and also a correlation of 82% between increasing disease duration and corrected responses (p<0.0001).
Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, it seems that people with multiple sclerosis suffer from some degree of disorder in the temporal resolution which might be due to involvement of central nerve system and, somehow, deficit in central auditory processing. Therefore, for evaluating the temporal resolution in people with multiple sclerosis, gap in noise test could be useful.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Diabetes mellitus is a common disorder and causes a variety of central nervous system complications such as cognitive deficits. P300 auditory event related potential application is a well established neurophysiological approach in the assessment of cognitive performance. In this study, we compared the results of this application in patients with insulin-dependent (type I) diabetics mellitus and normal individuals.
Methods: In this non-interventional study, auditory
P300 was measured in oddball paradigm by using two tone burst stimuli (1000 and 2000 Hz) on 25 patients with type I diabetics mellitus with the mean age of 28.76 years and 25 age-, education- and sex-matched healthy controls with the mean age of 29.68 years. The participants were enrolled by probable and category random sampling style.
Results: The mean P300 latency of the patients with type I diabetes mellitus was significantly prolonged compared with that of normal controls at all electrode sites and in both genders (p<0.001). The mean P300 amplitude of these patients was significantly lower compared with that of normal controls at all electrode sites and in both genders (p<0.001).
Conclusion: Significant prolongation in P300 latency of the patients with type I diabetes mellitus shows that auditory information processing and information categorizing are slower in them. Significant reduction in P300 amplitude of the patients with type I diabetes mellitus demonstrates that working memory in these patients cannot recognize new events and update its context in accordance with them.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Preterm birth is one of the risk factors need comprehensive audiological assessment. In this study, the effect of sex and rate of stimulation on response of children with history of preterm birth was investigated by auditory brainstem response (ABR).

Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted using convinience sampling. Click-evoked a uditory brainstem response test with both low (21.1 c/s) and high (51.1 c/s) stimulus rates was recorded in 30 children with a history of preterm birth and 30 ones with history of term labor, as controls.

Results: Significant differences were observed in inter-peak latencies of I-III in both rates, III-V in the low rate, I-V in the high rate, and absolute latency of III wave between high and low stimulus rates (p<0.05 for all). Rate of stimulus affect on auditory brainstem response of preterm birth group was more than controls. Sex also affected on some parameters of auditory brainstem response test.

Conclusion: Preterm birth group showed longer latencies than normal group in both rates. Rate of stimulus had significant effect on results of children with history of preterm birth compared normal group. These findings may reflect the negative effect of preterm birth on neural synchronization function in response to transient stimuli.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Staggered spondaic words (SSW) test examines central auditory nervous system . Some researches show stuttering causes hyperactivity in motor system of the right hemisphere and cerebellum and decreases activity in the left hemisphere. During stuttering also, central auditory processing is decreased . The aim of this study was to compare the Persian staggered spondaic word test results between persistent developmental stutterers and normal subjects.

Methods: Thirty people with persistent developmental stuttering were participants of this cross-sectional descriptive-analytic study, which were aged 11 to 40 years. The control group matched for gender and number with stutters. They were 8 females and 22 males, with the age of 11 to 40 years, without any stuttering history, neurological diseases and auditory disorders.

Results: Stutterers were in normal category in corrected staggered spondaic words test. The mean scores of errors of right compete, right ear, left compete, left ear and total in corrected s taggered spondaic words between control and stuttering group showed significant differences. There was a significant relationship between stuttering and effect, too (p<0.05).

Conclusion: Based on the obtained results of this study, stutterers may have different cortical and sub - cortical brain activity than people who have not stutter . Central auditory processing abilities of stutterers are weaker than normal people.
