Analyzing the effects of artificial saliva VA-ORALUBE in reducing complications of head and neck radiotherapy

According to the direct confrontation of dentist to oral complications of patients receiving radiotherapy, this study was conducted in Cancer institute of Imam Khomeini hospital in 1376-1377. Through this study, 70 patients expecting more than 4500 CGY radiation in salivary gland area was examined for xerostomia signs and symptoms . Artificial saliva and placebo were prescribed for patients to assess the results on xerostomia. The obtained results showed VA-oralube is significantly more effective in decreasing radiation complications (mucositis, dorsal tongue surface atrophy, pain and burning sensation of mucosa, dysphagia, oral ulcers, mucosal necrosis and gingivitis) than placebo or water. Due to the other advantages of artificial saliva such as fluride content and minor side effects, it should be prescribed in patients suffering from xerostomia as it can increase their life expectancy by reducing pain and discomfort.

Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans count in patients with adult periodontitis

Periodontal infections are categorized into various groups based on patient’s age or bacteria presented in dental pockets. There are Juvenile periodontitis, rapidly progressing periodontitis and adult periodontitis. Adult periodontitis is known as the most prevalent cause of tooth loss in adult patients. In current study, 100 teeth of patients who suffered from adult periodontistis were selected, cultured in kapnophil media and analyzed for containing Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans bacteria. 34 teeth of 17 patients contained this bacteria. Further discussions are mentioned in the article about sex,age and location of infection in these patients in association to the bacteria presence.

Reconstructing mandibular anterior region by Branemark and Bonefit joint implants: a case report

A 48 year old patient was candidate for anterior mandibular reconstruction by 2 fixtures of Branemark implant. Residual infection lead to removal of one of the implants from the extracted tooth socket. Afterwards, 2 fixtures of Bonefit was inserted adjacent to previously placed Branemark implants and final prosthesis were loaded in a joint cemented and screwed design.

Analyzing the effect of ion exchange on flexural strength of cermaco II and colorlogic veneer porcelains

The major foible of dental ceramics is their brittle nature. Therefore, the producers of these materials have focused on the “strength” issue. A method of increasing strength is ion exchange on porcelain surface which leads to formation of a compressive crust that opposing forces should overcome before developing a crack. In current study, ion exchange in two types of porcelain, Ceramco II which is used in PFM restorations and Colorloic veneer which is used for laminates, veneers, inlays and onlays, are evaluated. Additionally, laminate porcelains, etching effect on strength of porcelain and interaction of acid etching and ion exchange have been studied.

Comparing the incidence of trismus following mandibular third molar extraction after administration of chlorhexidine and normal saline

In this double blind clinical survey, 40 healthy candidates of mandibular thir molar surgery were selected and randomly allocated into two groups of 20. First group was asked to administer Chlorhexidine 0.2% mouth wash prior to the operation while the other group used normal saline for 60 seconds before the surgery. Mouth opening was measured before surgery and in 1st, 3rd, 7th days following the operation. Statistical analysis revealed significantly more mouth opening (lower level of trismus) in patients utilizing chlorhexidine before surgery.

Risk factors in dental caries

Since 3 decades ago, dental equipments and technologies as well as materials have been greatly improved and numerous effective treatment modalities have been discovered. As a result, the number of survived teeth have been greatly increased and many studies have been conducted in this regard. Fluride therapy is found as an effective treatment modality and can reduce dental caries up to 60%, due to recent evidences.

A study of malocclusion in identical twins

Monozygotic twins are genetically identical individuals who can also be mirror image twins and the Differences between them result from environmental factors. current study, monozygotic twins were analyzed in different dentitions of primary, mixed and permanent. As a conclusion, although genetic factors are naturally potent, environmental factors’ role can be increased and weaken the genetic factors.

Diabetes and keratotic lesions of lichen planus

In 1996 Grinspan et al presented the association between primary hypertension and diabetes mellitus as Grinspan Syndrome. Through various studies, Researchers have noticed that epidermal lichen planus cells show enzymatic disorders as well as defective carbohydrate expression. Therefore, it was assumed that there is a relationship between cells and hormones in metabolic actions. Besides, some researchers presented the possible relation between hormonal dysfunction and immunological disorders leading to lichen planus development. It was found that primary hypertension is not related to lichen planus and lichen planus is presented in hypertensive patients as a result of antihypertensive medications. Therefore, the majority of studies in this regard have been focused on diabtese and lichen planus, their prevalence , comparing patients with the control groups and the association between blood sugar, blood fats , antihypertensive drugs and lipid lowering drugs.
