Abstract

Background & Aim: Caregivers of elderly with Alzheimer&aposs disease, particularly females, encounter challenges. Their different roles in giving care to the patients could result in physical and mental disorders. The self-efficacy seems to be an essential factor in empowering individuals coping with stressful situations and challenging tasks. The aim of this study was to investigate general self-efficacy among women as family caregivers of elderly with Alzheimer&aposs disease.

Methods & Materials: In this cross-sectional descriptive study, 112 women reffered to the Iran Alzheimer Association, Tehran were selected through convenience sampling method. The General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSE-10) was used to collect data. Data were entered into the SPSS-16 and then processed using descriptive statistics and independent t-test, ANOVA and Scheffe.

Results: The mean score of the general self-efficacy was 28.24±6.34 indicating that considerable percentage of the participants had unsatisfactory level of self-efficacy (65.2%). In addition, there were significant relationships between the women&aposs general self-efficacy with educational and economic statuses (P<0.05). There were no significant relationships between general self-efficacy with age, marital status, occupational status and duration of caring.

Conclusion: According to the findings, a considerable percentage of the participants had unsatisfactory level of self-efficacy. Therefore, it is essential to promote the caregivers self-efficacy in order to give them the ability of better adaptation with the life&aposs challenges. In particular, the self-efficacy promotive programs should be implemented among caregivers with lower educational and economic status.

Abstract

Background & Aim: Endotracheal suctioning (ETS) is a common invasive nursing procedure. Hemodynamic parameters changes during and after the procedure. If appropriate strategies do not be applied during the ETS, hemodynamic changes can be significant and life threatening in critically ill patients. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of education of endotracheal suctioning on patients&apos hemodynamic parameters.

Methods & Materials: This was a non-equivalent quasi-experimental study conducted in two critical care units in Hazarat Rasool hospital. All nurses working in these two units participated in the study in a period of two weeks. Systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure and mean blood pressure of all patients who needed suctioning were measured before and after the endotracheal suctioning. We analyzed the data using the SPSS.

Results: At baseline, the systolic, diastolic and mean arterial blood pressures increased significantly (P=0.02) in the first and third minutes post-suctioning. In post-education phase, diastolic and mean arterial blood pressure increased significantly (P<0.001) in the first minute post-suctioning. In the third minute post-suctioning, systolic, diastolic and mean arterial blood pressure decreased (P=0.43).

Conclusion: The study findings showed significant changes in hemodynamic parameters after post-endotracheal suctioning. In this study, conducting endotracheal suctioning education improved the outcomes of hemodynamic parameters in patients. Educational programs can improve nursing care outcomes by preventing and minimizing hemodynamic changes during and after the suctioning in critically ill patients.

Abstract

Background & Aim: Shoulder pain is a consequence of hemiplegia among patients with stroke. It makes patient to be dependent to others in their daily living activities. This study aimed to determine the effect of the slow stroke back massage (SSBM) on shoulder pain and hand function among patients with stroke.

Methods & Materials: In this semi-experimental study, 34 patients were recruited among from 70 patients who reffered to rehabilitation center in 2010, according to the inclusion criteria. Participants were randomly allocated into two groups of control and experiment. In the intervention group, the SSBM was implemented for 10 minutes through seven consecutive sessions. Shoulder pain and hand function were measured using the visual pain scale (Visual Analog Scale), and the researcher-made "affected hand function in ADL" instrument, respectively. The measurement was done before and 24 hours after the last session of the intervention. Data were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical tests (independent t-test and paired t-test).

Results: At baseline, the mean scores of shoulder pain were 8.4 in both experimental and control groups (P=0.999). After the intervention, the mean scores of shoulder pain were 1.13 and 8.40 in experimental and control groups, respectively (P<0.001). At baseline, the mean scores of hand function were 7.46 and 8.93 in the experimental and control groups, respectively (P=0.752). After the intervention, the mean scores of hand function reached 9.13 and 8.6 in the experimental and control groups, respectively (P=0.918).

Conclusion: According to the results of the study, applying the SSBM as a treatment procedure and care plan by health care providers can be considered as an effective intervention to prevent or reduce shoulder pain and consequently to improve motor function of affected hand in patients with hemiplegia after stroke.

Abstract

Background & Aim: Breast milk provides many healthy nutrients to infants. Support provided by health care provider has positive effects on duration of breastfeeding. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of telephone counseling on continuity and duration of breastfeeding among primiparus women.

Methods & Materials: This clinical trial was conducted on 140 primiparus women referred to the selected health centers of Tehran University of Medical Sciences in 2010. The participants were randlomly allocated into two equal groups (each: 70 indviduals). The participants in the intervention group received telephone counseling by one of the researchers. The control group received routine care. Data were collected using a questionnaire including demographic characteristics and a breastfeeding check list. Exclusive breastfeeding rates were recorded one and three months after childbirth in both groups. Also, the continuity and duration of exclusive breastfeeding were recored three months after childbirth in both groups. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test, Fisher&aposs exact test, standard logistic regression and linear regression in the SPSS-16 and the Win Pepi.

Results: The average duration of exclusive breastfeeding in the intervention group (8.05±3.99) was significantly more than the control group (6.23±4.03) (P=0.008). In the third month of delivery, continuity of exclusive breastfeeding in the intervention group was more than the control group (P=0.03). Results also showed that telephone counseling was effective in the duration of exclusive breastfeeding (P=0.02).

Conclusion: Telephone counseling was effective in continuity and duration of exclusive breastfeeding. Using this inexpensive and easy method can help to increase exclusive breastfeeding, especially in primiparus women.

Abstract

Background & Aim: Administration of medications is an important part of treatment and care provided by nurses. Medication errors can create serious problems to patients and health system. The aim of this study was to determine the reasons of medication errors and the barriers of error reporting from nurses&apos viewpoints.

Methods & Materials: In this study, we randomly selected five hospitals in Tabriz and Maragheh. Then, 200 nurses who were randomly selected for the study completed the study questionnaire. The questionnaire included 21 items about medication errors and 19 items about the barriers of error reporting, based on five degree Likert scale. Collected data were analyzed using SPSS-15.

Results: In this study, from the viewpoint of nurses, the most important reasons of medication errors were hospital units (3.70±0.84), shortages of nursing staff, nuring burn-out and high workload. Regarding barriers of error reporting, the most cited barriers were management factors (3.78±0.89), fear of legal issues, inappropriate definition of medication error and inappropriate reactions of authorities.

Conclusion: We recommend increasing the number of nursing staff, adjusting the workload of nursing staff, using special forms for reporting errors and providing an atmosphere of intimacy between authorities and staffs.

Abstract

Background & Aim: Premature infants undergo painful and stressful procedures during care and treatment. Nurses can help to reduce short- and long-term effects of pain caused by diagnostic and therapeutic procedures using various methods including music therapy. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of music therapy on physiological pain responses of premature infants during and after blood sampling.

Methods & Materials: This was an experimental study with crossover design conducted on 20 premature infants hospitalized in the intensive care unit of a hospital affiliated to the Tehran University of Medical Sciences for a five months period in 2010-11. Infants were randomly allocated in two groups of experiment and/or control. Each infant was considered as its own control. We assessed the physiological pain responses caused by blood sampling such as heart rate and oxygen saturation level. Infants in the experiment group listened to the Transitions music five minutes before until 10 minutes after the blood sampling. The responses were recorded and reviewed ten minutes before until ten minutes after the blood sampling in both groups and physiological changes were detected. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and Chi-square tests in the SAS and SPSS.

Results: Results showed significant difference in heart rate between the experiment and control groups during needle exit (P=0.022). There was also significant difference in heart rate between experiment and control group in the first 5 minutes of blood sampling (P=0.005).

Conclusion: Results showed that music therapy could reduce some physiological responses of pain during and after blood sampling. Music therapy can be used as a beneficial intervention following painful procedures such as blood sampling in the NICU.

Abstract

Background & Objective: Appropriate physical activity help to promote women&aposs health during pregnancy. Providing appropriate educational programs for pregnant women seems to be necessary. This study was carried out to assess the effectiveness of a group educational program on pregnant women&aposs physical activity.

Methods & Materials: This clinical trial was conducted among 280 nulliparous women. The participants were randomly divided into two experimental and control groups. Women in the experimental group participated in eight 90-minute group-based educational classes. Those in the control group received routine care. Data were collected at baseline and at the end of the educational program. Data were analyzed using the Chi-squared test and the t-test in the SPSS.

Results: There were no statistical differences on age, body mass index, education level, employment status, and physical activity between the two groups at baseline. The physical activity score was more in the experiment group (37.38±14.89) in compare with the control group (13.7±11.12) after the intervention (P<0.001).

Conclusion: The group-based educational program seems to promote physical activity during pregnancy. These kinds of programs should be implemented in prenatal clinics.

Abstract

Background & Aim: Quality of nursing care is a major issue in nursing management. In the last year of nursing studies (internships) in Iran, nursing students are going to independently carry out responsibilities of graduated nurses. Patients&apos satisfaction is a main indicator for nursing care quality. This study was to determine the correlation between the quality of caring behaviors among internship students with the patients&apos satisfaction with nursing care quality.

Methods & Materials: In this cross-sectional study, 200 patients were selected using convenience sampling method from the hospitals affiliated to the Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Data were gathered using two questionnaires including: 1) quality of the caring behaviors and 2) patient satisfaction with nursing care quality questionnaire (PSNCQQ). Data were analyzed using statistical tests in the SPSS-13.

Results: Regarding quality of caring behaviors, the subscale scores of the knowledge and skills were good and patient education was low. The relationship between the nurses and patients, and nursing morality were in average level. Regarding the patient satisfaction, the highest level of satisfaction was related to nursing knowledge and skills and the lowest level was related to the patient education. Significant correlation was found between the total quality of the caring behaviors with the patients&apos satisfaction and their subscales (P<0.001).

Conclusion: Based on the findings, patients are more satisfied with the caring behaviors of the students who focus on the communication with patients, nursing ethics, and especially patient education during the care.

Abstract

Background & Objective: Parental participation in pediatric nursing is not ideally done due to several barriers. This qualitative study aimed to explore the barriers of parental participation in pediatric care during 2011-2012.

Methods & Materials: This qualitative study was carried out using content analysis approach. Data were gathered through face to face semi-structured interviews with a sample of pediatric nurses (n=11) who were recruited through purposeful sampling from a pediatric hospital in Tehran. After gaining data saturation, data were analyzed using content analysis method.

Results: Four main themes were emerged as barriers of parental participation in pediatric care including mutual motivation and interest in both parties (motivation and attitudes of nurses and interest in parents), management (lack of support for nurses, nursing shortage, nurses&apos workload, and poor teamwork between nurses and physicians), confidence in the nursing profession, and finally undefined role for mothers.

Conclusion: Findings revealed the barriers of parental participation in caring for their hospitalized children. Managers and nurses can take advantages of these findings to improve and strengthen parental participation in pediatric care units during hospitalization.

Abstract

Background & Objective: Hospitalization of patients in the intensive care unit of open heart surgery (ICUOH) is often stressful for patients&apos family carers. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the informational support on anxiety among families of patients undergone open heart surgery.

Methods & Materials: In this double-group randomized clinical trial, 64 family carers of patients undergone open heart surgery were selected using convenience sampling method and were randomly allocated into two intervention or control groups. The informational support consistedof  holding the ICU orientation tours and educational sessions, and providing educational pamphlets and booklets. The members of the control group received routin information. The anxiety of the family carers was measured using the trait Spielberger anxiety questionnaire before surgery and in the day of discharge from the ICU. Independent and paired t-tests were used to analyze the data.

Results: According to the findings, there were no significant difference between the two groups regarding demographic charachteristics. At the baseline, the mean of anxiety scores were 47.9±11.5 and 49.2±11.5 in the control and intervetion groups, respectively. The anxiety scores diminished in both groups after the surgery, however, the difference was not statistically significant between the two groups (P=0.18).

Conclusion: For effective control of anxiety among family members of patients, both informational support and other supportive techniques such as psychological support and meeting other family needs should be considered.

Abstract

Background & Aim: Lack of knowledge about coronary angiography may cause anxiety and stress in patients. Implementing appropriate educational methods can be effective in decreasing the level of anxiety among these patients. This study aimed to compare the effects of face-to-face with group education on anxiety and knowledge of patients undergoing coronary angiography.

Methods & Materials: This quasi-experimental study was conducted in Shaheed Rajaie Cardiovascular Center affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences in 2012. Through consecutive sampling method, 84 hospitalized patients who were candidate for coronary angiography were selected and allocated into two educational groups. Data were collected using a demographic data sheet, the knowledge assessment questionnaire, and the Spielberg state-trait anxiety inventory. Patients in both groups received same educational content. The patients&apos knowledge and anxiety were assessed before and after the intervention. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and independent t-test and paired t-test.

Results: The finding showed that both face-to-face education and group education were effective in enhancing the knowledge of the patients. However, group education was more effective than the face-to-face education in reducing the patients&apos anxiety (P=0.049).

Conclusion: Health professionals, particularly nurses, can use group education as an effective and appropriate strategy to improve patients&apos knowledge and to reduce the anxiety among patients undergoing coronary angiography.

Abstract

Background & Aim: The presence of pain is a common phenomenon among patients in critical care units. Critically ill patients are often unable to communicate because of illness or sedation so, recognition and assessment of their pain is difficult. In these patients, observational behavioral indices can be used to evaluate pain. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of application of critical-care pain observation tool in patients with decreased level of consciousness on performance of nurses in documentation and reassessment of pain after palliative intervention.

Methods & Materials: In this before and after quasi-experimental study, 106 nurses working in general intensive care units in selected hospitals affiliated to Tehran University of Medical Sciences were selected. First, we examined the nurses&apos performance three times in relation to documentation and reassessment of pain after palliative intervention, position change and suction procedure in patients with decreased level of consciousness using a researcher-made check list. Then, we taught nurses individually, how to use this tool to investigate the pain of patient in a session lasting an hour. A week after the training, the researcher reevaluated performance of trained nurses in relation to documentation and reassessment of pain after palliative intervention in patients with decreased level of consciousness. Finally, those data collected before and after the training of the CPOT to nurses were compared using the Wilcoxon test.

Results: Findings showed that the CPOT could not lead to improved nurses&apos function in relation to documentation of pain in the patients records (P=0.209) and recording palliative measures related to pain (P=0.117). However, there were significant statistical differences between nurses&apos function in relation to reassessment of pain after palliative intervention, before and after the training and application of the CPOT. Comparing the mean function scores before and after the intervention, demonstrated that the performance of nurses in this area has been improved after the intervention.

Conclusion: The critical-care pain observation tool can increase nurses&apos sensitivity to pain in patients with decreased level of consciousness. It forces the nurses to reassess the pain after palliative intervention. This tool does not motivate in nurses to document pain palliative process. So it is recommended that future studies investigate the impact of this tool on other aspects of pain management, such as diagnosis of pain and using of drugs and non-drug measures.

Abstract

Background & Objective: Nursing students usually experience various types of stress. Lack of stress coping strategies result in more stress, incompatibility, manifestation of disorders, and mental health problems. This study carried out to assess the methods of coping with stress among nursing students.

Methods & Materials: In this cross-sectional study, 358 male and female bachelor of nursing students studying at Tehran University of Medical Sciences during the first semester of 2011-2012 were selected. Data were collected using the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situation and a demographic questionnaire. The data was analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics in the SPSS-14.

Results: There were 66.2% female and 33.8% male students in the study. The age of the students ranged 17-29 years. Most of the students aged 20-22 years (45%), were single (90.8%), were habitants of Tehran (53.1%), had an average economic status (72.1%), and were employed (20.9%). Of all, 19.3% had experienced stressful events in the last three months. A small number of the students (4.7%) suffered from chronic diseases. The nursing students mostly used problem-oriented coping style (56%). The emotion-oriented method was used among 45.99% of the students and the avoidance-oriented style was used among 39.34% of the students. There were no statistically significant relationship between the coping styles and the demographic characteristics.

Conclusion: The problem-oriented, emotion-oriented, and avoidance-oriented styles were the most frequent styles used by the students, respectively. The mental health, particularly among nursing students who deal with patients and have important role in the health system, is important and requires special attention. The stress coping styles should be inserted in the educational curriculum of the nursing schools.

Abstract

Background & Objective: Hospitals and healthcare centers, like any other organizations, have some common norms and beliefs called as organizational culture. Organizational culture plays a key role in organization&aposs and staffs&apos performances. Nurses&apos perspectives on the organizational culture affect the way they play their role in. This study aimed to investigate the role of organizational culture from perspectives of nurses working in selected hospitals at Tehran University of Medical Sciences.

Methods & Materials: In this cross-sectional study, 230 nurses working in different wards of selected hospitals of Tehran University of Medical Sciences were recruited to the study. Data were collected using a demographic characteristics checklist as well as the nurse and organizational culture questionnaire extracted from the Robbins criteria. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical indexes, independent t-test, Pearson correlation coefficient and regression in the SPSS v.17.

Results: Results showed that the existing organizational culture in the selected hospitals was in a moderately good level from nurses&apos perspectives. From the scores obtained for various dimensions of the organizational culture, the highest and lowest scores were for control (44.2%) and conflict tolerance (31.8%), respectively.

Conclusion: The level of the organizational culture from the nurses&apos perspectives might lead them to decrease the quality of their performance. Optimizing the organizational culture can improve nurses&apos performance and motivate them to increase their quality of work.

Abstract

Background & Aim: Pain is an unpleasant experience related to potential or actual tissue damage. Distraction is an effective technique to control pain. This study aimed to examine the effect of pressing a small soft ball during intravenous catheter insertion on pain related behavioral responses of children.

Methods & Materials: A randomized clinical trial study was conducted in surgical ward of the Qods hospital in Qazvin, Iran in 2010. Sixty children aged 4-6 were selected through a simple randomized sampling method. The children were allocated into two equal intervention and control groups. Data were collected using the FLACC scale. In the intervention group, children were asked to press a soft ball during IV catheter insertion. The researcher marked the FLACC during the procedure. In the control group, no distraction was made during the IV catheter placement. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent-sample t-test, Chi square at P<0.05.

Results: There was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of demographic variables including gender, birth order, race, age and type of disease. In the intervention group, none of the children experienced severe pain during IV catheter insertion and 63.3% of the children had moderate pain. In the control group, 50.0% of children had moderate pain and 23.3% of them experienced severe pain during IV catheter insertion. There was a significant difference in perceived pain between the children of two groups (P<0.001).

Conclusion: Distraction is an effective, non-expensive, and easy-to-access technique to control and reduce pain in children during IV catheter placement. This study showed that distraction through pressing a soft ball was effective in reducing the behavioral responses of pain in children who underwent IV catheter placement.

Abstract

Background & Aim: Most of the psychological turmoil of marital conflicts is related to sexual dissatisfaction. Sexual satisfaction is influenced by physical and mental illnesses. Pelvic floor muscle relaxation is a major health problem in which prolapsed pelvic floor muscles causes paralysis, pelvic organs&apos prolpases, pelvic organs&apos dysfunction, dyspareunia, and back pain. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of pelvic floor muscle exercise on sexual satisfaction in primiparous women.

Methods & Materials: This clinical trial was conducted among 100 primiparous women selected through cluster randomized sampling from five clinics of Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Samples were randomly divided into two equal groups. The intervention group received pelvic floor exercises (Kegel) for 16 weeks. The control group did not receive any intervention. Data were collected using the Linda Berg questionnaire before the intervention and 16 weeks after the intervention in both groups. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square, t-test in the SPSS v.18.

Results: After 16 weeks, significant differences were reported in the levels of sexual satisfaction in the intervention and control groups (P<0.001).

Conclusion: The Kegel exercises are easy and non-expensive methods that should be offered by health professionals to increase sexual satisfaction in women after childbirth.

Abstract

Background & Aim: Asthma is one of the most prevalent chronic diseases worldwide. About 6.5 million people suffer from asthma in Iran. The Effective strategy to control asthma is related to education. The self-management has a major role in the standard education program. This study aimed to assess the effect of education on using peak flow meter and follow up via SMS on asthma self management.

Methods & Materials: This study was a quasi-experimental controlled clinical trial. The samples included 98 patients, suffering from asthma referred to the pulmonary clinic in Imam Khomeini and Shariati hospitals. Patients were selected using convenient sampling method and were randomly assigned into the experiment (n=47) and control (n=51) groups through blocking method. Two educational sessions were held in the experiment group about how-to-use peak flow meter. Accordingly, the patients in the experiment group sent their peak flow rates via SMS to the researcher within 12 weeks. The researchers provided feedback to the patients about their asthma control via phone, weekly. Patients in the control group did not receive any education. Data were collected using the Asthma Control Test before and three months after the intervention. Data were analyzed using the statistical tests of Chi-square, Mann-Whitney, Independent t-test and Kolmogorov-Smirnov.

Results: There was a significant statistical difference between the two groups of experiment and control in terms of asthma control (P=0.002).

Conclusion: The education using peak flow meter and following up via SMS promotes asthma self-management. With regard to the significant role of nurses in patient education, educating patients with asthma by nurses is recommended at the Iranian Society of Asthma and Allergies clinics and medical centers.

Background & Aim: Nurses are informed from patients needs using effective mutual communications. This study aimed to explore the communication strategies between nurses and patient.

Methods & Materials: This study had a qualitative approach with the content analysis method. Participants included 23 nurses, patients and their families in medical and surgical wards of Imam Khomeini hospital of Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Data were collected using interviews and observations. The first and second interviews were conducted unstructured. The semi-structured interviews were then conducted according to the derived concepts from the first and second interviews. We used observation in order to gain a deeper understanding and verifying data from interviews. The observations focused on the interactions between nurses and patients during mutual communications.

Results: A final theme was emerged through the data analysis: adaptation of nurses&apos attitudes and performances. This theme derived from three main categories: caring according to acute needs of patients, creating a professional realm, and participation. The caring according to acute needs of patients included subcategories such as identifying patients&apos acute needs and nurses&apos communication behavior. Creating the professional realm implicated on the clarifying roles and maintaining of privacy communication. Participation was defined as the audience and content.

Conclusion: The findings showed that nurses, in response to the underlying conditions of nursing care, assimilate their attitudes and performances to be able to meet their professional needs and their patients&apos needs. In fact, the main character of nurse-patient communication is nurses&apos active role and patients&apos passive role.

Abstract

Background & Aim: Implementation of the motivational program by nurse managers can improve nurses&apos performance and behaviour, provide better care for patients, and promote patients&apos satisfaction. This study aimed to determine the effect of implementation of the motivational program designed using "Expectancy Theory" by head nurses on patients&apos satisfaction.

Methods & Materials: This was a quasi-experimental study conducted in medical and surgical units of two hospitals in Zanajn in 2011. Data were gathered using a patient satisfaction questionnaire. The reliability of the questionnaire was confirmed (α=0.72). Fourty participants were selected and allocated in two study groups. The groups were matched for some variables before the intervention. The motivational program was implemented in the intervention group for five months. The program had two designing and implementation phases including: 1) determining nurse managers&apos expectancies from nurses, assessing nurses&apos attitudes about valuable rewards, founding reward management committee and management improvement committee, and providing evaluation checklists for nurses&apos performance 2) implementing standards of nursing care and patient education by nurses, monthly evaluation of nurses by head nurses and collaborative members of the reward management committee, determining level of rewards based on the results of nurses&apos performance evaluation, and giving reward to nurses at the end of each month in a reward ceremony. Data were analyzed using the Paired t-test, Independent t-test, Mann-Whitney, and Chi-squared in the SPSS v.16.

Results: There were no significant differences between the two groups at baseline dealing with the demographic variables. The results showed that patients satisfaction was significantly higher in the intervention group after the intervention (P<0.05).

Conclusion: This motivational program designed based on the "expectancy theory" has clear steps to be implemented among nurses and can be used as a practical guide by nurse managers to improve patients&apos satisfaction.

Abstract

Background & Aim: Poor sleep quality is a common problem among patients hospitalized in the CCUs. This study aimed to determine the effect of environmental factors modification strategies on quality of sleep among patients admitted to CCU.

Methods & Materials: This was a quasi-experimental study with a single-blinded design. Sixty patients admitted to the CCU of Shariati hospital were divided into two experiment and control groups. Sleep quality was measured in the first day of admission and three days later using the Pittsburgh sleep quality index in both groups. In the intervention group, we implemented a modified work environment between the two measurements. Data were analyzed using the Chi-squared and t-test in the SPSS v.18.

Results: Findings showed a significant decrease in sleep quality in the control group after hospitalization, compared with the intervention group (P<0.001). There were no statistically significant changes in the sleep quality before and after hospitalization in the intervention group (P=0.053).

Conclusion: Using environmental factors mitigation strategies can improve sleep quality of patients admitted to CCUs.
