Abstract

Background: The aim of this study was to compare time action profile of regular human Insulin produced by Exir pharmaceutical Co. and Actrapid® HM produced by Novo Nordisk with euglycemic clamp technique for the first time in Iran.
Methods: Euglycemic glucose clamps were performed with two Insulin brands in a single-center, randomized, double-blind, and crossover study on 6 healthy male volunteers. Glucose disposal kinetics including metabolic clearance rate of glucose (MCRg) and metabolic clearance rate of insulin (MCRi) were determined during a 2-h predetermined intravenous Insulin infusion while blood glucose levels were maintained steady using variable continues intravenous glucose infusions based on method of De Fronzo.
Results: There were no differences in glucose kinetics or time action profile with respect to glucose infusion rates (688.4 vs. 664.6 mg/kg per 120min), MCRg (0.63±0.19 vs. 0.62±0.25 ml/kg), and MCRi(110 % vs110%) between Exir and Novo Nordisk regular human Insulin preparations. Serum insulin levels increased and serum C-peptide levels decreased with both exogenous Insulin infusions which were statistically the same for both preparations.
Conclusion: Time action profile and bioavailability of regular human insulin produced by Exir Pharmaceutical Corporation is comparable with commonly used Novo Nordisk preparation demonstrated by 2 hour euglycemic clamp study.

Abstract

Background: The risk of cardiovascular diseases increase in diabetic patients. So, it is important for patients to achieve the optimal lipid levels. Nutrition including consumption of anthocyanins plays a primary role in reducing the risk of heart disease and hypertension. In this study, we assessed the effect of concentrated sour cherry juice (SCJ) consumption as a rich source of anthocyanins on lipid profile and blood pressure of type II diabetic patients.
Methods: In this quasi-experimental study 16 type II diabetic women with fasting blood sugar ≥110 mg/dl and LDL-C ≥100 mg/dl were recruited and consumed 40 g/day of SCJ for 6 weeks. Measurements of weight, lipid profile and blood pressure were done in baseline and after completion of the study. A 2-day food records was completed by patients so. The Wilcoxon test was used for statistical analysis. Results: Mean (± SD) age, weight, total cholesterol, LDL-C, systolic and diastolic blood pressure were 53.6±8.8 years, 72.8±14.9 kg, 213.9±27/0 mg/dl, 118.4±14.7 mg/dl, 129.1±15.7 mmHg and 81.7±8.1 mmHg respectively in the beginning of the study. After consumption of SCJ, a significant decrease (P<0.05) in weight, total cholesterol, LDL-C, systolic and diastolic blood pressure was seen. Changes in serum triglyceride and HDL-C concentrations were not significant statistically.
Conclusion: It is concluded that SCJ consumption may modify cardiovascular disease risk factors in diabetic type 2 patients.

Abstract

Background: The relationship between diabetes and periodontal diseases has already been proved, but the effect of non-surgical periodontal therapy on the control of diabetes is controversial. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of this type of treatment on the control of diabetes.
Methods: In this randomized clinical trial 30 type 2 diabetic patients with moderate to severe periodontitis who were referred to the diabetes clinic of Imam Khomeini hospital during 2004-2005 were studied. The treatment procedure was explained for control group and an informed consent was taken. Scaling and root planning was randomly done for 15 patients, while control group were not treated for periodontal disease. The glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C) and clinical attachment loss was measured for all of the patients before and 2 months after treatment.
Results: At the baseline the clinical attachment loss (CAL) was significantly different between two groups. There was no significant difference between baseline HbA1C in the control and the experimental group. After 2 months the HbA1C was reduced in the treated group which was not statistically significant.
Conclusion:
In this study non-surgical periodontal therapy had not effect on the control of type 2 diabetes.

Abstract

Background: Diabetes is a global epidemic and the most common metabolic disorder caused by impaired insulin secretion and glucose metabolism. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of 8 weeks of aerobic training on serum levels of asprosin and insulin resistance index in diabetic rats.
Methods: The statistical population of this research included 40 10-week-old mice with an initial weight of 250 ± 20 grams, which were randomly divided into four groups (10 mice in each group): diabetic-exercise group (DT), diabetic group - Control (DC), healthy-training group (HT) and healthy-control group (HC) were divided. The program of aerobic exercises was performed for 8 weeks (5 sessions per week) in the form of running on a treadmill. Independent t-test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with Tukey's post hoc test were used to compare the groups. All data were analyzed at a significance level of 0.05 using SPSS-25 software.
Results: The results of the present study showed that streptozotocin injection induced diabetes in mice (P= 0.001). Induction of diabetes caused a significant increase in the serum levels of asprosin and insulin resistance in mice (P= 0.048 and P= 0.012, respectively). Eight weeks of aerobic training decreased the serum levels of asprosin and decreased insulin resistance in diabetic rats (P= 0.001 and P= 0.036, respectively).
Conclusion: Induced diabetes causes insulin resistance and increase in serum levels of asprosine, which can be improved by performing aerobic exercises.
