Abstract

Background: Type 2 diabetic patients have higher risk for death from coronary heart diseases than non-diabetic patients. Studies have revealed showed intensive treatment of hyperglycemia only have a small effect on CVD risk. Other risk factors such as Lipid abnormality play a leading role in the increased CVD risk associated with diabetes. The aim of this study was to assess the quality of lipid control and treatment in type 2 diabetic patient with dyslipidemia. 

Methods: We studied Data from 602 type 2 diabetic patients who had at least four regular clinic visits every year for medical care in outpatient clinics of Isfahan Endocrinology and Metabolism Research Center, 1999-2003. Patients for Classified in three groups according to lipid levels as low, moderate and high risk. ADA )American Diabetes Association) standard criteria were used for appropriate lipid control.

Results: The mean age, duration of diabetes, HbA1c and BMI were 52.2±9.5 years, 6.8±4.6 years, 9.2±1.7% and 29.4±4.2 Kg/m2 respectively at initial registration. Eighty four percent of patient had LDL cholesterol above 100 mg/dl and 71% had triglyceride level >150 mg/dl, of these patients 47.8% and 41.6% had high risk levels and only 12.4% taking statins and 21.5% taking fibrate for treatment  at end of study. Among hyperlipidemic patients levels of LDL-C decreased from 170.8±35.6 mg/dl to119±30.20 (p < .001), triglyceride decreased from 273.8±126 to225.2±97 mg/dl (P<0.004) and HDL-C increased from 43.3±10.6 to 48.4±14.1mg/dl ((P<0.6). Percentage change of lipid level was -35.8%, -17.7% and +7.3% respectively. At the end of fallow-up 50.4% of patients treated with statins and 14.7% with fibrate. Finally, overall control of cholesterol and triglyceride in patients with dyslipidemia was 30% and 37% respectively.

Conclusion: Our findings showed that many of type 2 diabetic patients with dyslipidemia have inadequate control of lipid and lipoprotein. The prevalence of cardiovascular events due to hyperlipidemia in type 2 diabetic patients is high. This fact demonstrates the importance of early interventions for control and treatment these risk factors for prevention of cardiovascular complication in this patients.

Abstract

Background: The prevalence of Diabetes mellitus as the most common metabolic disorder of human is progressively increasing. Dyslipidemia is common among diabetic patients characterized by elevated plasma TG, LDL-C and reduced HDL-C levels which increase risk of cardiovascular events. Fish oil supplement which contains omega-3 has been proposed to correct the atherogenic lipid profile associated with diabetes mellitus. Doubt remain whether the net effect of fish oil supplement on lipid profiles are beneficial in diabetes. We therefore performed this randomized double-blind clinical trial to investigate this.

Methods: Ninety six patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus were randomized assigned to take 3 times daily supplementation (capsule) with either fish oil or corn oil for 8 weeks (48 patients in each group). At begining also end of study we measured laboratory variables (FBS, TG, Total cholesterol, LDL and HDL) in both groups.

Results: At begining of the study demographic and laboratory measurements were similar in both groups (P>0.05).At 8th weeks there  were  no statistically  significant  differences  in variables  measured except for  LDL and HDL in fish oil  group that leads to increase and decrease respectively. Although both groups show improvement in LDL / HDL and Total cholesterol / HDL ratios but mean charges were statistically significant in fish oil as compared with corn oil group. (P=0.001, P=0.005 respectively).

Conclusion: Fish oil supplement showed statistically significant improvement in LDL/HDL, Total cholesterol/HDL ratios as compared with corn oil. This may leads to decrease cardiovascular events.

Abstract

Background: Only limited data are available on the benefits of fruits and vegetable consumption on CVD risk factors. The aim of this study was to examine whether and to what extent intake of fruits and vegetables are inversely associated with cardiovascular (CVD) risk factors in adults.                                                           

Methods: In this population-based cross-sectional study a representative sample of 840 Tehranian adults (361 men and 479 women) aged 18-74 years were randomly selected in 1998. Usual dietary intake was assessed with the use of food frequency questionnaire. Portion sizes of consumed foods were converted from household measures to grams and analyzed by using Nutritionist III software designed for Iranian foods. Subjects were categorized based on category cut-points. : 0-1.9, 2-2.9, 3.0-3.9, and>=4 servings/d.

Results: In multivariate logistic regression after adjusting for confounders, dietary fruits and vegetable were found to be significantly and inversely associated with CVD risk factors. Adjusted odds ratio for high LDL concentrations were 1.00, 0.88, 0.81, 0.75(P for trend < 0.01) in first model which was adjusted for age, body mass index (BMI), energy intake, smoking status, dietary cholesterol, and prevalence of diabetes mellitus and coronary artery disease, a trend which was not appreciably altered by additional adjustment for education, physical activity, and saturated, polyunsaturated, total fat, Potassium and vitamin C intakes. This association was observed across categories of smoking status, physical activity, and tertiles of the Keys score.

Conclusion: Consumption of fruits and vegetables more than 4 servings a day is associated with lower concentrations of total cholesterol and LDL-C and with decrease in the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract

Background: Use of medicinal plants for attenuation of hyperglycemia and restoration of lipids to normal levels is very important. The effect of oral administration of Vaccinium myrtillus (VM) on serum glucose and lipids in diabetic rats was investigated.
Methods:
Female Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups: control, VM-treated control, diabetic, and VM-treated diabetic groups. The treatment groups received oral administration of plant-mixed food (6.25%) for 4 weeks. Serum glucose, triglyceride, total cholesterol, LDL- and HDL- cholesterol levels were determined before the study, and at 2nd and 4th weeks after the study.
Results:
Serum glucose level in diabetic group increased 2 and 4 weeks after the experiment as compared to data one week before the study (P<0.001) and VM treatment of diabetic rats did have a significant hypoglycemic effect (P<0.01). In addition, triglyceride level in diabetic group increased 4 weeks after the experiment in comparison with related data one week before the study (P<0.05) and there was a significant lower level of triglyceride in VM-treated diabetic rats (P<0.05). Furthermore, there was no significant changes regarding serum total cholesterol, HDL- and LDL- cholesterol levels in treated diabetic group as compared to untreated diabetic group.
Conclusion: Oral administration of VM has a significant hypoglycemic effects and leads to an appropriate changes only in triglyceride level.

Abstract

Background: There are growing concern globally regarding fast food consumption and its related cardiometabolic outcomes. In this study we investigated whether fast food consumption could affect the occurrence of metabolic syndrome after 3-years of follow-up in adults or not. Methods: This longitudinal study was conducted in the framework of Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study on 1476 adults, aged 19-70 years old. The usual intakes of participants were measured using a validated semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire at baseline. Biochemical and anthropometric measurements were assessed at baseline (2006-2008) and 3 years later (2009-2011). Multiple logistic regression models were used to estimate the incidence of the MetS in each quartile of fast food consumption. Results: The mean age of participants was 37.8±12.3 years old, and the mean BMI was 26.0±4.5 kg/m2 at baseline. Participants in the highest quartile of fast food consumption were significantly younger (33.7 vs. 43.4 years, P <0.01). Higher consumption of fast food was accompanied with more increment in serum triglyceride levels after the 3-year follow-up (10.6±2.3 vs. 4.4±2.3 percent in the fourth and first quartile, respectively, P<0.01). After adjustment for all of the potential confounding variables, the risk of metabolic syndrome, in the highest quartile of fast foods compared with the lowest, was 1.85 (95% CI= 1.17-2.95). Conclusion: We demonstrated that higher consumption of fast foods had undesirable effects on metabolic syndrome after 3-years of follow-up in Iranian adults.

Abstract

Background: Physical activity with diet and medication–considered fundamental in the treatment of diabetes. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of combined 12-week aerobic exercise and barley β glucan (BBG) on blood glucose and lipid profile in patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods: Twenty- four female volunteers (49±5 years) were selected, and after completion of questionnaires, were randomly divided into three groups a) aerobic training with diet group (n=8), b) diet group (n=8) and c) control group (n=8). The diet group used one barley bread per day with 4 gram beta glucan during 12 week. The combined group participated in progressive walking training program with intensity of 60-70% of maximal heart rate 2 to 3 times a week, 20 to 60 minutes in each session in addition to diet program. The variables measured included blood sugar, triglyceride, cholesterol, LDL, HDL. For data analysis ANOVA used to compare mean differences between groups. Results: Results indicated significant difference in blood sugar between control and experimental groups while non significant changes was observed in lipid profile. Conclusion: Aerobic exercise and BBG can decrease blood glucose in patients with diabetes Therefore, it should be considered seriously as part of the treatment of these patients.

Abstract

Gangliosidosis GM1, is a lipid storage disorder due to deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme &beta-galactosidase. This deficiency leads to lysosomal accumulation of gangliosidosis GM1 to be, which contributes to swelling, cell damage and dysfunction of the organs. Gangliosidosis GM1a rare neurodegenerative disorder. Mongolian spots are significant clinical sign in some of the metabolic diseases, such as gangliosidosis GM1, but limited information is available. Hepatomegaly, hypotonia, edema, seizures, and skeletal malformations and Cherry red spot in the macula of the eye are of other symptoms of the disease. In this paper, we present a 10-month-old child with gangliosidosis GM1 type 1 with extensive mongolian spots who was referred the Hajar Medical Educational Therapeutic Center Shahrekord.

Abstract

Background: The prevalence of non-communicable disorders such as metabolic syndrome (MetS) is high in developing countries. Metabolic syndrome is a disorder of energy utilization and storage, diagnosed by a co-occurrence of three out of five of the following medical conditions: abdominal (central) obesity, elevated blood pressure, elevated fasting plasma glucose, high serum triglycerides, and low high-density cholesterol (HDL) levels. The present review aims to discover the genetic variant reported in association with MetS. Methods: The database for genotypes and phenotypes (dbGaP) and the database for genetic associations and human genome (HuGE navigator) were utilized in order to search for genes and their corresponding polymorphisms related to MetS. Additionally, an electronic literature search for other Iranian studies and the genetic aspect of TLGS was completed using PubMed. Results: For phenotype selection in PheGenI, 30 traits were chosen and after the analysis, 21 of them were in common results with MetS. After finding the common variation between traits and MetS, omitting the repeated SNPs, 173 variations were remained. Finally, results distinguished six of the most important genetic regions found to have strong association with MetS. Conclusion: Identifying major genes that are responsible for the metabolic syndrome may improve the medical care for treating individuals with metabolic syndrome, and eventually may lead to personalized medicine in which treatment is tailored genetically to the patient’s needs. The present candidate regions is a respectable start to replicate genetic studies in large affected Iranian individual which we hope leads us to improve our medical care in this field.

Abstract

Background: The possibility that childhood obesity is a chronic disease in adulthood becomes enormous. The incidence and spread of obesity has increased substantially over the past two decades. The importance of personal health and quality of life has prompted researchers to study in this field. The aim of this study was to investigate the changes of serum levels of leptin, insulin, lipid profile, and body mass index after a period of sprint interval training in obese children. Methods: In this study, 30 obese children aged 9 to 11 years were randomly targeted placed in two groups (Training and control group). Sprint interval training was conducted for 8 weeks. Before and after training, measurements of leptin, insulin, lipid profile, and body mass index were measured. Data were analyzed using independent t-test (p<0.05). Results: Data analysis showed that after training, leptin, insulin and cholesterol levels were significantly reduced (p=0.001). Also, a significant decrease in BMI was seen (p=0.01). Conclusion: Sprint interval training on leptin, insulin and cholesterol in obese children has a significant impact and this exercise improve body mass index in these individuals.

Abstract

Background: Hyperlipidemia is a major cause of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) and the most common problems in the community. The present study examined the effect of grape seed supplementation along with aerobic activity on lipid profile in elderly women Methods: In this experimental study, 40 obese women (BMI&ge30 kg/m2) over 60 years were selected and randomly divided into two groups (supplement + Exercise and control group). The exercise program included aerobic exercise with 50% of maximum heart rate for three times a week for 8 weeks plus Grape seed extract supplement 200 mg daily for 8 weeks. Blood sampling after fasting period for 12 hours in pretest and 48 hours after the last training session was taken. To compare data between groups t-test was used. Results: The results showed significant differences in the levels of cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL-C and pre-test and post-test group supplemented along with sports activities. Conclusion: Long-term aerobic exercise combined with grape extract consumption may reduce the lipid profile parameters.

Abstract

Background: plants have been used in treatment of diabetes mellitus (DM) all over the world for centuries. Studies have indicated that, numerous classes of chemical compounds found in plants are potential effective in the treatment of diabetes. Lemon balm (Melissa officinal is) is a member of Lamiaceae family. In this study, were studied the effect of Melissa officinal is hydroalcoholic extracts in the prevention of diabetes and its effect on serum lipids and lipoproteins in rats.

Methods: Inthisstudy25male rats, weighing200-250grams were semi-randomly divided into5groups of 5 each. Group1(control),group2(diabetic),and groups3, 4and5, respectively extract with doses20, 100and500 mg/Kg/BW, for a period of two weeks every day through were gavaged and then diabetes was induced by way of intra peritoneal injection of alloxan at a dose120mg/kg WB .Blood from rats was performed in order to measure the serum concentrations of glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL and LDL.

Results: The results indicated a significant decrease (P<./.5) in levels of blood sugar, cholesterol, triglycerides and LDL in rats treated with the extract of Melissa officinal is. In addition, significant increase (P<./.5) in HDL level were observed in treating rats in comparison to the diabetic group.

Conclusion: The results of this study indicated that the Melissa officinal llis extract may be used effectively in preventing, controlling and attenuating the complications of DM. This effect can be due to the presence of flavono ides and their antioxidant features in these plant.

Abstract

Background: The scavenger receptor class B type I (SR-BI), as the high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) receptor, is a key component in the reverse cholesterol transportation. The objective of this study was to assess the association between exon1 (G→A) polymorphism of SR-BI gene and lipid profiles among the Tehran Lipid and Glucose Study (TLGS) population.

Methods: This cross-sectional study included 774 adults (322 males and 452 females) aged 20–70 years, who were randomly selected from among TLGS population. Anthropometrical and biochemical variables for participants were measured. Selected SR-BI gene polymorphism was determined with restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) using the Alu restriction enzyme.

Results: according to the results of current study, in the Tehran population, the allele frequency of SR-BI (G→A) polymorphism was 0.159 for an allele (minor allele) and 0.841 for G allele. Allele frequencies were in conformity with Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium. The result of this study showed that Subjects with the less common allele (allele A), after adjusting for age, have lower HDL-CandHDL3concentrations (p=0.046, p=0.041 respectively).

Conclusion: lipid disorders are caused by the interaction of environmental and genetic factors; therefore, exon1 (G→A) polymorphism of SR-BI gene could not be the only cause for the abnormality in the HDL-C levels. In future, this polymorphism may be use as a molecular marker for diagnosis.

Abstract

Background: Increasing blood glucose levels is associated with a reduction in the antioxidant defense of the body. The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of aerobic resistance exercises with and without ginger on some of the oxidative and antioxidant indices in type 2 diabetic women.
Methods: Twenty-two type 2 diabetic women with a mean age of 49.47±4.36 years, BMI 31.3±16.3 kg / m2, height 0.56±0.04 meters were selected randomly and they were divided into two experimental and control groups. Both groups performed 12 weeks, 3 sessions per week, exercises with intensity of 75-85%, 1RM in 8 stations, and after 5 minutes of rest, aerobic training exercises with an intensity of 75-85% of MHR. A daily group of 800 mg capsules of ginger rhizome powder and the other group consumed capsules containing wheat flour. 24 hours before and after training, MDA, TAC, SOD, GSH, HbAlc, glucose and insulin and body composition were measured.
Results: 12 weeks of combination exercise caused a significant decrease in glycosylated hemoglobin, insulin resistance, insulin resistance, lipid percentage, and a significant increase in TAC and GSH compared to baseline (P <0.05), while SOD and MDA Did not have any significant effect.
Conclusion: Combined exercise with and without zinc seems to improve antioxidant and some of the body composition indices in type 2 diabetic women.

Abstract

Background: Due to the progress of diabetes and the use of alternative herbal medicines, In this study, the effects of oral administration of the mucilage extracted from pods of Abelmoschus esculentus (Ae) fruits on serum levels of glucose, lipids and morphology of Langerhans islets in diabetic rats was investigated.
Methods: In this experimental study, 24 female wistar rats were randomly allocated into four groups (n=6): normal control (NC), diabetic control (DC) and 2 diabetic groups that received (oral) 300 and 500 mg/kg/body weight of Abelmoschus esculentus. After preparing and confirming the type of, mucilage extraction from the fruit’s green okra was done by evaporation device in vacuum. Diabetes mellitus was induced by single dose intraperitoneal injection of streptozotocin 60mg/kg/body weight in diabetic groups. After 4 weeks, the serum levels of glucose and lipid profile of all groups were analyzed. Also morphology of Langerhans islets in the 4 groups was evaluated using H&E staining method. The data analyzed by SPSS software using ANOVA and Tukey tests.
Results: The results indicate a significant increase (P<0/05) in glucose, cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL and significant decrease (P<0.05) in HDL in diabetic rats compared to normal control. The use of the mucilage extracted from A. esculentus caused a significant decrease in serum levels of glucose, cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL and significant increase in serum level of HDL comparison with diabetic group.
Conclusion: according to the results of this study, the mucilage extracted from A. esculentus could be effective on control hyperlipidemia and hyperglycemia caused by diabetes mellitus.

Abstract

Background: Skeletal muscle as an endocrine tissue is involved in the regulation of metabolic activity, production and secretion of hormones including myokines. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of eight weeks of aerobic training combined with ethanol consumption on plasma lipid profile and glucose levels, triglyceride content and mayonectin, irisin and leptin gene expression in the gastrocnemius muscle in male rats.
Methods: A number of 32 rats with a weighing average of 200 ± 10 g were divided into four groups control, aerobic training, ethanol with dose of 4 g/kgbw, and ethanol +aerobic training. At the end of the period, values of lipid profile and plasma glucose, the amount of triglyceride of the gastrocnemius muscle and the relative levels of mayonectin, irisin and leptin gene expression were evaluated. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA.
Results: The plasma triglyceride levels in the aerobic training and ethanol+aerobic training groups were significantly decreased compared to the control group (P≤0.05). The gastrocnemius muscle triglyceride values were significantly increased in the ethanol +aerobic training (P≤0.0001) and aerobic training groups (P≤0.01) compared to the control group. The results showed that aerobic training significantly increased myonectin gene expression in aerobic training group (P≤0.05), but the expression of irisin and leptin genes did not change significantly in different groups.
Conclusion: Aerobic training during the eight-week was able to improve lipid content, especially plasma triglyceride and skeletal muscle triglyceride, and possibly regulate body metabolism by altering the levels of myokines, especially myonectin.

Abstract

Background: The release of adipokines from adipose tissue depots plays a key role in regulating metabolic homeostasis and several other physiological processes, including diabetes, obesity, and vascular diseases. This study investigated the effect of eight weeks of high intensity interval training (HIIT) on asprosin, lipid profile and insulin resistance in type 2 diabetic male rats.
Methods: 24 male Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into four equal groups: control (C), control traning (C+T), diabet (D) and diabet traning (D+T). Diabetes was induced by the combined method of high fat diet and low dose strepotozocin injection. The traning group performed the HIIT program on the treadmill for eight weeks. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and bonferroni post hoc test at a significance level of P<0.05.
Results: The results showed increased plasma asprosin in D group compared to C (P=0.0001) and decreased in C+T group compared to C (P=0.03) and D+T group compared to D (P=0.04). There was no significant difference in HOMA-IR between the C and C+T group (P=0.9) but decreased in D+T compared to D (P=0.0001). HDL increased in D+T group compared to the D (P=0.0001) and decreased TG and LDL (P=0.001). There was no significant difference between TG and LDL in the C group compared to the C+T, but HDL increased in C+T (P=0.01).
Conclusion: Plasma asprosin increases in rats with type 2 diabetes and HIIT can reduce the complications of diabetes by improved lipid profile and reduce asprosin and insulin resistance.

Abstract

Background: Physical activity and green tea are one of the recommended ways to control obesity and its complications such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and liver inflammation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the combined effect of exercise training and green tea on lipid profile in adults with overweight and obesity.
Methods: A systematic search of English and Persian articles published in PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, SID, Civilica, and Magiran databases was conducted until June 2024.
Results: A total of 14 studies with 390 adults with overweight and obesity, of which 198 subjects were in the combined exercise and green tea group with an average age of 34 years old and BMI with an average of 30 kg.m2, of which 192 subjects in the control group with an average age of 34 years old and BMI with an average of 31 kg.m2 entered the present meta-analysis. The results showed that the combination of exercise training and green tea caused a significant decrease in TC [WMD=-22.923 mg/dL, P=0.001], TG [WMD=-9.946 mg/dL, P=0.001], LDL [WMD=-11.675 mg/dL, P=0.001] and significant increase in HDL [WMD=8.888 mg/dL, P=0.017] in adults with overweight and obesity, compared to the control group.
Conclusion: The results of this meta-analysis showed that the combination of exercise training and green tea in overweight and obese adults decreases TC, TG, LDL and increases HDL. Therefore, exercise and green tea can be suggested to to adults with overweight and obesity as a non-medicinal and practical solution to improve lipid profile.

Abstract

Background: Metabolic syndrome in obese children and adolescents raises the risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Research suggests that exercise training may improve cardiometabolic health in this population. This meta-analysis aims to evaluate the impact of exercise on these risk factors in children and adolescents with metabolic syndrome., and behavioral outcomes in children and promoting awareness, self-care skills, and quality of life in families.
Methods: A systematic search of English and Persian articles was conducted from PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases without time limits until May 2024. In data analysis, a random-effects model was used to calculate the weighted mean difference (WMD), standardized mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI). Also, heterogeneity of studies was assessed with the I² test.
Results: The results of 6 studies involving 1,761 participants demonstrated that exercise training led to significant reductions in body weight [WMD = −6.32 kg, P=0.001], waist circumference [WMD = −9.11 cm, P=0.001], LDL [WMD = −0.52 mmol/L, P=0.001], TC [WMD = −0.65 mmol/L, P=0.001], serum TG [WMD = -0.56 mmol/L, P=0.001)], fasting glucose [WMD = −0.19 mmol/L, P=0.03], fasting insulin [SMD = −1.01, P=0.001], and HOMA-IR [WMD = −1.60, P=0.001] compared to the control group in obese children and adolescents with metabolic syndrome.
Conclusion: Exercise interventions significantly reduce body weight, waist circumference, and blood pressure, while improving lipid profiles, including serum LDL, TC, and TG levels, in obese children and adolescents with metabolic syndrome. However, these interventions exhibited no significant impact on serum HDL concentrations. Consequently, to reduce cardiovascular risk factors and improve metabolic conditions, it is essential to implement long-term exercise interventions.

Abstract

Background: The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of high-intensity interval training on lipid profile, fasting blood glucose, body composition, and Vo2max in patients with type 2 diabetes or obesity.
Methods: The type of research conducted is a systematic meta-analysis review. A systematic search of published articles was conducted from PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Sid, and Magiran databases up to January 2024. The mean difference and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated using a random-effects model. Heterogeneity was assessed using the (I2) test and publication bias was assessed using visual analysis of funnel plots and Egger's test.
Results: The results showed that high-intensity interval training significantly reduced body fat percentage [standard mean difference (SMD)=-0.796, P=0/001], BMI (SMD=-0.378, P=0/001), WHR (SMD=-0.424, P=0/001), LDL (SMD=-0.694, P=0/001), TC (SMD=-0.495, P=0/001), TG (SMD=-0.317, P=0/001) and fasting blood glucose (SMD=-0.557, P=0/001) in patients group compared to the control group had a significantly higher VO2max. However, high-intensity interval training significantly increased Vo2max (WMD=-0.997, P=0/001), and HDL (WMD=-0.558, P=0/001) in patients group compared to the control group.
Conclusion: Based on the results obtained, high-intensity interval training can have a positive effect on metabolic indices, body composition, and aerobic capacity in patients with type 2 diabetes or obesity and improve the condition of these individuals. Therefore, it is suggested that in medical centers for diabetic and obese patients, under the supervision of sports and medical specialists, the beneficial effects of high-intensity interval training should be utilized and used as an auxiliary strategy for the treatment and improvement of these individuals.

Abstract

Background: Dietary acid load is thought to contribute to the development of metabolic syndrome through effects on acid–base balance with evidence being inconsistent. This study aimed to examine the associations between dietary acid load indices, Dietary Acid Load (DAL), Potential Renal Acid Load (PRAL), and Net Endogenous Acid Production (NEAP) and risk of metabolic syndrome and its components in an Iranian adult cohort.
Methods: 6,482 adults aged 35-65 years were enrolled from the Mashhad Stroke and Atherosclerosis Study. Dietary intake was assessed using a validated food frequency questionnaire, and dietary acid load indices were calculated. Participants were followed for nearly 10 years. Logistic regression models were used to evaluate associations of DAL, PRAL, and NEAP with the incidence of metabolic syndrome, diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia, adjusting for major confounders.
Results: Following adjustment, no significant associations were found between DAL indices and the incidence of metabolic syndrome or its components. DAL odds ratio (OR) for the highest versus lowest tertile was 0.984 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.815–1.188; p= 0.868]. For PRAL, the OR was 1.024 (95% CI: 0.865–1.212; p= 0.782), and for NEAP, the OR was 0.902 (95% CI: 0.763–1.066; p= 0.227). None of the indices were significantly related to new cases of diabetes, hypertension, or dyslipidemia (all p> 0.05).
Conclusion: In this Iranian adult cohort, DAL indices were not associated with the risk of metabolic syndrome or its components. Further studies in populations with different dietary habits are needed to clarify potential threshold effects or effect modifiers.
