Abstract

Background: In recent years, waist and hip circumference measurements simultaneously used as anthropometric factors to determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity in adults, in addition to Body Mass Index. Some studies have confirmed the relationship between the above mentioned factors and the hematological parameters of cardiometabolic disorders. This study aimed to determine the association between anthropometric factors and hematological factors in 25-60 years old couples of Babol, Mazandaran.

Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in spring 2014, on research population of 25-60 year old couples who were selected by random cluster. Data collected through a researcher-made questionnaire containing about demographic variables, underlying factors, dependent variables; its validity and reliability were confirmed. The collected data were analyzed by SPSS18 software.

Results: Men’s BMI had significant direct relationship with systolic and diastolic blood pressure, fasting blood sugar, cholesterol and triglycerides (p<0.05). Women’s BMI had a significant direct relations with systole and diastole blood pressure, fasting blood sugar and triglycerides (p<0.05). There was a significant direct relationship between men’s and women’s Waist/Hip Ratio (WHR) with systole and diastole blood pressure, fasting blood sugar, cholesterol and triglycerides (p<0.05). There was a significant direct relationship between men’s and women’s anthropometric indices (apart from the BMI) associated with serum biomarkers of cardiometabolic disorders (p<0.05).

Conclusion: The results showed that increased BMI and WHR in couples, increases the amount of cardiometabolic serum biomarkers and may directly and indirectly cause the risk of chronic diseases.

Abstract

Background: Type 2 diabetes is the most common type of diabetes, and a complex endocrine metabolic disorder that one of its main complications is diabetic foot ulcers. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are one of the key enzymes in the reconstruction of extracellular matrix which have proteolytic activity. The aim of this research is based on evaluating relationship between -1562 C>T allele at MMP-9 gene promoter with diabetic foot ulcer in type II diabetic patients. If such correlation proves, it can be used as a prognostic biomarker in patients with high-risk.
 Methods: This is a case-control study. The single nucleotide polymorphism of -1562C>T allele of MMP9 gene promoter was genotyped by hit Tetra ARMS PCR technique in 100 diabetic patients with foot ulcer grade 1 or 2 as the case group according Wagner classification and in 100 diabetic patients without foot ulcer as the control group. Results: The Chi-square test revealed significant difference in genotype frequency of CC, CT and TT alleles of -1562C>T allele of MMP9 gene promoter between case and control groups (P=0.000).
Conclusion: According to this study, there is a relationship between -1562C>T allele of MMP9 gene promoter with diabetic foot ulcer in type2 diabetes patients. Thus we can introduce this biomarker for evaluation of risk and prognosis of diabetic foot ulcers.

Abstract

Background: A novel nanocomposite-modified electrode based on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) decorated with crown-ether and gold nanoparticles (GNPs) on the surface of a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was fabricated to investigate 5-HT determination.
Methods: The morphology of nanocomposite was characterized by scaning electron microscopy (SEM). Diabetic zebrafish was obtained by overfeeding via glucose. 5-HT was successfully determined in the presence of dopamine (DA), ascorbic acid (AA), urea, glucose, and L-tryptophan (L-Trp) by using electrochemical methods.
Results: The nanocomposite exhibited satisfactory electrochemical catalytic activity for 5-HT determination using square-wave voltammetry (SWV). The electrochemical behavior of 5-HT at the nanocomposite/GCE displayed reasonable oxidation current and potential. The limit of detection (LOD) of 5-HT obtained from the real samples, containing the control and diabetic group by using the proposed system and HPLC method, was calculated to be about 0.3 and 0.1 µg/L, respectively. The prposed system also demonstrated high selectivity, reasonable sensitivity, and good stability and reproducibility for 5-HT sensing. The nanocomposite was applied for the determination of the biomarker 5-HT in the diabetic and control groups of zebrafish and displayed excellent recoveries about 93 and low relative error about 3% while compared with standard method.
Conclusions: It seems that the 5-HT level can be used for earlier diagnosis of diabetes.
