Abstract

Background and Objectives:Dual media filters have two different layer beds consist of sand and Anthracite. Advantage of dual media filters is longer run duration and more filtration rate. The purpose of this study was to achieve a performable model to improve single media Filters in water treatment plants.
Materials and Methods: in this cross-sectional study, two pilots mono and dual media were made and in a 5 month period samples taking were done. Total samples taken from input and output of each pilot, was 40. The samples then introduced for the measurment of turbidity and total organic carbon. Meanwhile the filters head loss also quantified in 40 times head loss measurement was done.
Results: Average turbidity removal in mono and two layer pilots were 63 and 65 percent respectively. Average removal of Total Organic Carbon in mono and two media pilots were 40 and 66 percent respectively. Head loss in dual and single media pilots were 0 .68 and 1.15 m respectively.
Conclusion: Although average torbidity removal disparity between two pilots was not significant the amount of total organic carbon removed was considerable. Average head loss in single media pilot was more than dual media type. Ratio of UFRV in dual media to mono media filter was 51:30 it shows that filtration rate capacity will be improved up to70 percent by changing media type.

Abstract

Background and Objectives: Fresh fruit juice is one of the best drinks which have minerals and vitamins and is a good source for water compensation, but if microbial quality of the fruit juice does not meet the standard level, it can be play as a source for food disease infections.
Material and method:In his cross-sectional study, all of 58 fruit juice shops in Bandar Abbas were selected as study population, correspondence rate was 84 percent. The samples were tested for total Coliform, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, yeasts and molds.
Results:Testing the samples showed among 146 samples, 142 of them were contaminated by microorganisms. All of Carrot and mango juices were contaminated. The mean contamination rate of juices to Coliform bacteria, Mesophilic bacteria, Escherichia coli and yeasts were 86.2, 53.2, 57 and 56.6 percents respectively.
Conclusion:97.3 percents of samples did not have a good microbial quality for human consumption. If consumption of fresh fruit juices will cause the consumer at risk of food borne diseases, all the natural benefits of them in terms of richness in minerals and vitamins will waste.

Abstract

Background and Objectives: The present study was designed to determine total mercury concentrations in sediment and the soft tissues of two bivalve species, Saccostrea cucullata and Callista umbonella, in coastline of Bandar Abbas in 2011. Materials and Methods: Generally, 67 bivalves and 10 sediment samples were collected from two stations (terminal of Bandar Abbas and tourism park of Soro). We measured total mercury concentrations in each sample using Mercury Analyzer (Leco AMA 254). Results: Means of mercury concentration were 145.58 and 151.13 (ng/g dw) in soft tissues of oyster S. cucullata and 34.5 and 63.95 in the soft tissues of Clam C. umbonella in two stations, terminal of Bandar Abbas and tourism park of Soro respectively. Total mercury concentrations were 30.27 and 20.55 (ng /g dw) in the sediment samples in two stations, terminal of Bandar Abbas and tourism park of Soro respectively. A significant difference was found in mercury concentrations between soft tissue of the two species (p <0.01). Conclusion: Considering higher concentration of mercury in the soft tissues of oyster S. cucullata than clam C. umbonella, lower coefficient of variation in soft tissue of oyster relative to clam C. umbonella, and also significant correlations between mercury levels in the soft tissue of oyster and sediments, it can be concluded that the soft tissues of oyster S. cucullata can be used as biomonitoring agent for mercury in intertidal zone of Bandar Abbas. In comparison with food safety standards (FDA, EU Commission and NHMRC), mercury concentrations in oysters were well within the permissible limits for human consumption.

Abstract

Background and Objective: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) constitute a large class of organic compounds that are composed of two or more fused aromatic rings. Due to their potential mutagenic, carcinogenic and teratogenic effects on human health, PAHs have attracted particular concern. Therefore, in this study it was attempted to measure the PAHs concentration in the study area to evaluate the health risk.
Materials and Methods: 36 samples were taken from the central district in Bandar Abbas county to investigate the degree of contamination, sources and health risk  of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Analysis of the samples was performed using gas chromatography.  خطای ترجمهAlso,  PMF Model was used to determine the possible sources.
Results: The total PAHs concentration had a mean value of 1.48 mg/kg in the soil samples. The total incremental life time cancer risk (ILCR) due to exposure to PAHs in soil is 1.06 × 106 for an adult and 4.95 × 106 for children. The results estimated for ILCR indicated that residents live in the central district of Bandar Abbas county are potentially exposed to cancer risk via both dust ingestion and dermal contact.
Conclusion: The ecological risk assessment of PAHs showed that the levels of all types of PAHs were lower than the lower value of effects range, except for dibenzo(a,h) antheracene and acenaphthene. The estimated results of ILCR indicated that Bandar Abbas county central district residents are potentially exposed to cancer risk via both ingestion and dermal contact. The PMF analysis identified four sources that were included fossil fuel combustion (14%), biomass combustion (13%), vehicular emissions (36%) and fossil fuel combustion/unburned petroleum (37%).

Abstract

Background and Objective: Water quality assessment is an important step for optimal and proper use of water resources for drinking and selection of suitable and consistent water quality patterns. Therefore, the necessity of studying water quality characteristics in water resource management programs has been highly considered.
Materials and Methods: In this study, the hydrogeochemical quality of groundwater resources in the Siahoo region of Bandar Abbas was studied for drinking, agricultural and industrial purposes. Qualitative parameters of three wells, three springs, one juicy aqueduct and one surface water sample were used as input data. Water quality characteristics and charts were evaluated using Aq.qa and AquaChem software.
Results: Groundwater of the studied area was in the category of very hard water. According to the PIPER chart, the dominant hydrochemical facies were sulfatecolic and chloroformate species. According to the Willcox and Schuller qualitative index, groundwater for agricultural use was moderate and was acceptable for drinking water. In terms of the saturation index of islands, the existing water resources are corrosive to the sediment.
Conclusion: The data of this study indicate that one of the problems of the available water resources in Siahoo region is the high amount of salt and soluble materials, which show the effect of geological formations (evaporation, Chile, carbonates) and salt domes on the groundwater resources and reduction of the quality of water resources.

Abstract

Background and Objective: Heavy metal (HM) pollution of settled dust on the interior surfaces of elementary schools may affect the health of young students; hence, the health risk of such pollution should be assessed. Therefore, the aims of this study were to measure the content of heavy metals in the settled dust in the indoor of elementary schools in Bandar Abbas and to assess the attributed health risks.
Materials and Methods: In this study, dust samples were collected from the interior surfaces of elementary schools in Bandar Abbas. Settled dust samples were digested using aqua regia solution and then their metals contents were measured using ICP-OES. To assess the health risk attributed to this pollution, daily intake doses through ingestion, inhalation and skin absorption routes were estimated. Then, non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks were calculated considering the daily intake doses and toxicity factors.
Results: The average concentrations of arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, nickel and lead in settled dust were 5.45, 0.58, 11.44, 69.72, 83.95 and 66.72 mg/kg, respectively. The non-carcinogenic risk level for all metals was below threshold, while the carcinogenic risk level for arsenic (2.18×10-6) exceeded the threshold.
Conclusion: This study showed that the settled dust in elementary schools of Bandar Abbas is polluted with various levels of heavy metals. Health risk assessment showed that the exposure to dust containing heavy metals in the elementary schools of Bandar Abbas does not pose significant non-carcinogenic risk, but the carcinogenic risk of As exceeded the threshold limit and should be considered.
