Abstract

Background and objectives: Nowadays, landfilling is most common method in many countries owing to lower cost and adaptation to wide range of solid waste. Site selection of landfill requires evaluating several parameters such as municipal government requirements, environmental regulations and a large number of quantitative and qualitative criteria. The aim of current study was to compare AHP and TOPSIS in landfill site selection. For this purpose, two mentioned methods were applied to select suitable site in Karaj. Materials and methods: In present study, 4 candidate sites in south of Karaj were selected for landfill by overlaying data layers (digital maps) and query functions in Arc GIS 9.2. Prioritizations between alternatives were conducted by AHP and TOPSIS technique according to the criteria mentioned. Eventually, we compared and evaluated the AHP results and TOPSIS results with each other. Result: According to AHP, site prioritization was 3,2,4,1 respectively whereas, in the case of TOPSIS, it was ranked 4,3,2,1, respectively. These results showed that both methods are suitable to determine site priority. Conclusion: As in AHP, alternatives are compared with respect to goal and criteria, consequently it has better precision and higher accuracy and confidence compared with TOPSIS.

Abstract

Background and Objective: Medical waste is among the environmental problems. Failure to manage these wastes leads to the prevalence of various diseases. This study aimed to rank the educational hospitals of SBUMS by assessing medical waste reduction.
Materials and Methods: First, a review of past national and international studies was performed and accordingly, 12 criteria and 30 sub-criteria for reduction of medical waste production were selected. After developing a questionnaire based on such criteria, data was collected from six SBUMS hospitals. Then, TOPSIS and VIKOR techniques in MATLAB were used as ranking methods of hospitals.
Results: The combined results of TOPSIS and VIKOR methods using weighted average indicated that Hospital (C), Hospitals (B) and (A) were respectively ranked first, second and third in terms of waste management. Moreover, the effective measures to reduce the amount of waste production and to improve the waste management system include human resource, management support, proper management of supplies, proper model of service delivery, quality of supplies and equipment, and waste sorting at source.
Conclusion: A combined method consisting of TOPSIS and VIKOR for evaluation of ranking of hospitals in terms of waste management can be a helpful tool in planning waste management, and can provide a basis for improving measures and promoting programs and activities.

Abstract

Background and Objective: This study was designed to assess the safety and health risk in Ilam gas refinery and evaluation of TOPSIS method performance in risk assessment.
Materials and Methods:  After identifying 955 hazards case, the risks were ranked separately in the health and safety sectors using criteria such as exposure level, severity and probability of the occurrence and use TOPSIS multi-criteria evaluation method. Due to the impossibility of determining the level of risk using TOPSIS method, the FEMA method was used for this purpose, and the risk number (RPN) options was calculated.
Results: In the field of safety assessment, personal injury, financial, burns and death from fire due to storage flammable materials in the warehouse, with a similarity to the ideal solution (Cli) of 0.56 was identified as the highest risk. In assessing the health risk, poisoning and impact on the health of employees caused by microbial agents due to the use of expired food in cooking in the restaurant unit as well as respiratory injuries of drivers due to inhalation and gas leakage in the process area and traffic of drivers in the site Cli = 0.66 was identified as the highest risk.
Conclusion: TOPSIS, as a new approach, is capable of being used in the industry's risk ranking and assessment. All the risks were placed at a moderate to low level. Despite the necessity of determining the measures to control the risks, these risks were not an emergency.

Abstract

Background and Objective: One of the most important goals for urban environmental management system is the monitoring of air quality. Allocating optimum air quality monitoring stations (AQMS), is a key factor in establishing effective and accurate air quality monitoring program. The objective of this study was to determine optimal allocation for AQMS in Karaj.
Materials and Methods: Based on two stages approach, at first, the suitability map was obtained by WLC method. For AQMS implementation, municipal districts were ranked. The extracted alternatives were graded using TOPSIS. In the next stage, the position of preferred sites were investigated by site visiting and detailed criteria. Finally, the AQMS locations were introduced.
Results: Ten suitable stations were suggested based on population and number of municipal districts. During the first stage important criteria such as distance from roads and street cross-section were weighted and standardized. The distance from roads and green space were the lowest and highest important criteria, respectively. The lowest and highest ranks for AQMS implementation were Nos. 9 and 3 districts, respectively. During the first phase 30 alternatives were obtained. At the second stage, 10 best alternatives were selected following field observation and considering implementation criteria (eg. distance from trees, cross section and pollutants emission sources).
Conclusion: In this study, at the first stage the preferred alternatives were determined. In the next stage the best alternatives for AQMS implementation were selected considering reasonable time and effort. The suggested approach could be used to implement AQMS for other areas.
