Abstract

Ethics is elemental in all lines of work, but more so in the nursing profession, since the ethical and responsible conduct of nurses can have an important role in promoting patient recovery. As members of a large group in the field of medical science, nurses need to be equipped with sound professional ethics in their interactions with others.

The present study was a descriptive survey of the relationship between professional ethics and the efficiency of nurses. Study population consisted of the nurses employed in Imam Hospital and Mostafa Khomeini Hospital in Ilam. Sample size was determined at 134 using the Cochran formula, and 126 completed the professional ethics and efficiency questionnaire. The validity of the questionnaire was confirmed by experts, and its reliability was established by Cronbach's alpha test. Subsequently, the main hypothesis and the eight sub-hypotheses were examined.

The subjects consisted of 89 males and 37 females, of which 50 percent were aged between 20 and 35, 42% between 36 and 50, and 6% between 51 and 60 years. In terms of education level, 7 subjects had high school diplomas, 18 associate degrees, 42 were undergraduate and 59 graduate students and higher. The findings showed a significant correlation (0.002) between professional ethics and the efficiency of nurses. Results of the Pearson’s correlation test confirmed the relationship between accountability, honesty, fairness, loyalty, respect for others, and the efficiency of the nurses employed in Imam ​​and Mostafa Khomeini Hospitals, Ilam. No significant correlation was found, however, between the components of superiority and sympathy in nurses and their efficiency.

Considering the relationship between professional ethics and the efficiency of the nurses in these two hospitals, it is recommended to improve their performance through continuous training and promotion of nursing ethics.

Abstract

Medical Philosophy is essential part of medical ethics and history. I has long history and owes its current status to developments resulted by historical, philosophical, social, and cultural experiences. The most important reflection of its revolution is its influence on the goals and missions of higher education in different time periods. In this study, two of the most important philosophical perspectives towards the medical education are compared with the aim of investigating possibilities and limits of each perspective in general education, specialized education, and treatment. The descriptive-analytical method is used for this comparison. These two perspectives are: 1) biomedical philosophy, which is based solely on human biological mechanisms, and 2) humanistic philosophy, which is based on the integrity of the human being. The results of this study show that medical education from the perspective of the biomedical philosophy focuses on specialized education, and treatment from this perspective is performed in the form of a patriarchal relationship. Whereas, from the humanistic perspective, general education is based on the integrity of the human being (including biological, psychological, and ontological) together with the specialized education. Treatment in this approach is achieved through a collaborative relationship between the physician and the patient.

Abstract

Trust is one of the most important aspects of human relationships, providing the foundation for participation and cooperation among individuals. It is also one of the most valuable social assets within the healthcare system. If trust is disrupted, it can impose significant costs on the system. The purpose of this study is to measure the level of patients' trust in doctors and its impact on the treatment process at Shahid Beheshti Hospital, Kashan. In this study, 325 patients referred to the emergency department of Shahid Beheshti Hospital in Kashan were selected. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 310 participants remained in the study. The General Trust Instrument was used for this research. This questionnaire consists of 33 questions covering six dimensions: patient-centered care (6 questions), macro-level patient care policies (6 questions), provider expertise (4 questions), quality of care (9 questions), communication and information provision (6 questions), and quality of collaboration between providers (2 questions). Scores ranged from 0 to 100, categorized as follows: 0–20 indicates very low trust, 20–40 low trust, 40–60 moderate trust, 60–80 high trust, and 80–100 very high trust in healthcare. Out of the 310 participants, 157 (50.6%) were male, and 153 (49.4%) were female. The mean age of the patients was 56.6 ± 20.6 years. Among the patients, 178 (57.4%) had acute illnesses, while 132 (42.6%) had chronic illnesses. The mean and standard deviation of the total score for the General Trust Questionnaire was 95.59 ± 13.8. This study demonstrated that the general trust score of patients in the doctors at this center is high. In delivering healthcare, interventions alone are insufficient; improving the quality of services is essential to enhance patient trust and satisfaction.
