Abstract

According to the professional definition of ethics, ethics is a sustainable and steady way of communication based on rights of both sides and also professional ethics is to know and act to your ethical responsibilities that every real or legal person has to others. Therefore, one of the measures of  the ethicality of a university is students rights and we can count those rights to find the ethical responsibilities.
From the very beginning of entering to the university and even when the student is admitted, he/she has rights which some of them are related to the educational system. (Of course the other parts are related to the environment, including family, friends, professors, different branches of university and totally other elements of society which are not the concern of this article). Students rights can be divided into two types: the first type is those rights which have been changed into rules and are in the form of regulations and instructions and need to be followed. The other type is those rights which are not official yet and they are just some ethical principles. These rights are called ethical responsibilities and in this article we deal with these responsibilities towards students. Therefore, it is necessary to know the students rightsin the educational system and they can be the basis of many ethical judgments for the university.
Students rights are not just related to the educational system and they surround other parts of university and society as well, but the students rights in the educational system have a straight relation to his/her learning and scientific development, so those are considered as the the most important rights of students and acting to them is also very crucial.
By counting the students rights in the educational system, the university would be aware of its duties practically and it will be the first step of implementation of ethics in the university. Total duties of university and educational system towards student's rights are as following:

  • 1- To recognize the students right.
  • 2- To comply and show sensitivity to the students rights.
  • 3- To comply the characters
  • 4- Make restitution for lack of compliance.

If we look at the students rights from the university's point of view, then we should consider the duties of university all based on professional principles which are like Copernican Revolution. According to this: "others have rights and we have duties." i.e. for determining the educational duties of universities towards the students, we should first consider the students rights and then the duties of the university.

Abstract

Trust is an important factor in the relationship between physician and patient. Trust between physician and patient is an important factor in improving patient and physician satisfaction, but it will not materialize unless we define trust and its criteria. Since trust fulfillment is dependent on its criteria, in this study we tried to define these criteria. First, we explicated the meaning and concept of trust through review articles, then we proceeded to content analysis, and lastly, the logical conclusion was obtained. In this article we have expressed scientific opinions and extracted 23 components from the cited opinions. We concluded that trust can be analyzed from three perspectives: the perspective of patients with 5 criteria, the physicians' view with 2 criteria and the perspective of an observer of the physician-patient relationship with 9 criteria.

Abstract

Although, physicians have a duty to treat their patients, sometimes the cure is not possible in medicine and there is no result in attempt to cure patient. In this situation, we face with two types of patients: first, patients who are conscious but suffering with advanced disease and will survive only for a short time. The second group, are patients who are unconscious and may not be cured with the standard treatment based on physician experience.
The latter are the subject of the present article. So what a Hospital should do in dealing with these patients? How the hospital, should develop a community-based policy on providing care for these patients. Finally, how should inform the public to adhere to these policies.

Abstract

Medical ethics in a reductive look can be handed to physician’s ethics and then call a physician who adheres to medical ethics attributed to the moral virtues. Moral virtues are counted to be about 137 in the teachings of Shiite, most of which are not related to the practice of medicine but nearly eighty virtues are linked to the practice of medicine.  This number is too much to be handled in a paper and analyzed by verses and hadiths. Therefore, we should take two steps: 1-Limit the virtues of physicians 2- Analyze the virtues of physicians. Believe and practice the virtues emphasized in the teachings of Shiite leads to a monotheistic look to the practice of medicine and provides physicians with a different and transcendental worldview. This insight that stood upon the teachings of the Qur'an and hadiths by Imams (AS) considers the practice of medicine a divine relation and then shows the communication between a physician and others. The current paper analyzes the divine relation of the physician and its impact to the practice of medicine. First literature review performed to find three most virtues. Then Factor analysis method was used and therapeutic virtues were limited to thirteen virtues. Then library study and focus group discussions were used to analyze the selected therapeutic virtues. The practical conclusions is that if we consider medical ethics practice based on virtue, and define and interpret virtues based on the teachings of Shiite, then we will get to a monotheistic view in the practice of medicine that distinguishes Shiite medical ethics monotheistic feature and the secular one, and helps to link between faith and morals.

Abstract

Gene therapy entails the introduction of specific, functional genes into cells for therapeutic or preventive purposes. This process may be used in vitro or directly in vivo. One of the novel methods of gene therapy and genome editing that has been introduced in recent years and have made great changes in the field of genetic engineering and biotechnology is CRISPR-Cas gene-editing system. This system is faster, cheaper, more accurate and efficient than another genome editing one, such as TALEN and ZFNs. As with any other emerging process, the ethical concerns and challenges associated with the genome editing methods including the potential application of this technique for nefarious purposes, such as, bioterrorism, harmful mutations to the living being, and disrupting ecological balance. This review was prepared using the databases of Science Direct, Pub-Med, SID, Scopus,  Web of Science, and then, the selected papers were fully reviewed and information was extracted and summarized. According to the ethical and legal considerations surrounding the processes in gene therapy, it is expected that appropriate conditions will be provided to make the best use of gene therapy and to reduce concerns and possible abuses. The purpose of this review was to investigate ethical issues of the genome editing and gene therapy with an emphasis on the CRISPR-Cas system.

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) represents a transformative and innovative approach in healthcare with the potential to revolutionize diagnostic, therapeutic, administrative, educational, research, and managerial processes. Given that AI systems influence reasoning, decision-making, and the delivery of care, their implementation faces challenges, particularly ethical considerations rooted in the unique nature of the healthcare system—where patient welfare, trust, and the autonomy of healthcare providers hold paramount importance. This study adopts a qualitative approach. Various information sources, including journals, articles, and publications, were reviewed. The applications of AI in clinical environments and its impact on individuals' interactions with healthcare systems, decision-making processes, and clinical workflows were analyzed, and relevant ethical considerations were extracted. The results indicate that the integration of AI in healthcare, despite its extensive benefits in prevention, diagnosis, treatment, prediction, decision-making, process automation, medication and therapeutic recommendations, surgical guidance, personalized medicine, telemedicine systems, and numerous other applications, is accompanied by a set of ethical considerations. Addressing these considerations is crucial to ensure the responsible and equitable use of these technologies. These include concerns related to patient privacy and data security, biases in AI systems, transparency, explainability, interpretability, accountability, informed consent, impacts on the relationships between healthcare providers and patients, equitable access to AI benefits, the appropriate and judicious use of technology, ethical use of automation, preservation of human dignity, effective oversight and regulation, legal and legislative issues, and long-term implications such as preventing misuse of predictive data by insurers or employers, among other patient rights-related issues. The utilization of AI in healthcare necessitates the development of ethical and legal frameworks that balance technological innovation with the humanistic principles underpinning healthcare systems. This ensures that while leveraging the advantages of AI, privacy, justice, equity, and human dignity are safeguarded. Emphasis on continuous monitoring and aligning AI-based systems with human values can foster trust in these technologies, ensuring that AI is used responsibly and adheres to ethical standards, ultimately serving to enhance public health outcomes responsibly and equitably.

Abstract

Moral distress constitutes a significant challenge for healthcare professionals, arising when individuals find themselves unable to act in accordance with their personal and professional values due to both internal and external pressures. Healthcare professionals may face scenarios that prompt them to question the ethical acceptability of their decisions and treatment practices, often feeling powerless in the face of perceived unethical changes. This study sought to explore the experiences of moral distress encountered by emergency medicine physicians and nurses in the emergency department. This study was conducted using qualitative content analysis. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 25 healthcare providers selected via purposive sampling. Data analysis was conducted using MAXQDA 2018 software. The results indicated that the experiences of moral distress among emergency medicine physicians and nurses in the emergency department can be classified into four primary categories including those related to: 1. patient rights, 2. medical staff and colleagues, 3. management, and 4. professionals. Notably, factors such as overcrowding, inadequate staffing, discrepancies between salaries and workloads, and poor management of human and physical resources emerge as significant contributors to moral distress in the emergency department of Imam Khomeini Hospital. To improve patient care quality, it is essential to implement strategies that enhance triage processes, prioritize human resources, align resources with patient needs, monitor patient attendance, and develop a comprehensive protocol for staff.
