Abstract

Despite all recent advancements in medical sciences and the related technologies, the concept of death still remains obscure. It can be asserted that as death includes both physical and spiritual dimensions, medicine alone is not capable of fully illuminating its different features. Therefore, inter-disciplinary collaboration between different branches of science such as Quranic studies, humanities, and philosophy seems necessary in order to shed some light on this hitherto undiscovered subject. Through description of what the soul experiences before and during death, such collaborations may even enrich the knowledge and broaden the minds of physicians who are capable of the analysis of physical changes caused by death. This insight can promote the ethical decision-making process as well as the provision of end-of-life care and spiritual support in different stages of death. The current research, as a library literature review, endeavors to provide a descriptive view of death from a medical perspective, and then, a Quranic depiction of its different stages through an analysis of verses and quotations from the holy Quran and Islamic scriptures whose primary focus is the process of dying. The final discussion section presents some similarities and differences observed between viewpoints and raises questions which can be considered as being of great practical importance in terms of provision of necessary end-of-life spiritual support. We hope that further research in this field can better clarify the issues raised in this article so that practical measures aiming at the provision of Quran-based spiritual end-of-life care are designed and implemented.

Abstract

Since the beginning of the Imamia school of thought, Imamia scholars paid a great attention to issue of physicians’ responsibility. With a long-lasting debate on this issue, in most cases they have confirmed physician’s responsibility in medical error. However, in terms of a skilled medical doctor who treats the patient with no medical error but harm occurs, there is no consensus. Some scholars have said that if the physician had the patient’s (or family) consent for the treatment, then the physician is not guilty. In the contrary, some scholars believe that the physician still should bear the responsibility.This paper aims to examine the Islamic Pinal Code (no. 495) by relying on changing trajectory Imamia jurisprudence in exchange for claimed physicians’ responsibility. The legislators in Article 495 of the Islamic Penal Code (Act. 92), seems to take into account both mentioned perspectives and try to choose a middle way. However, in practice, this has caused confusion.

Abstract

Currently, in Iran, some difficulties in the application of conventional medicine, has caused more public interest in using Persian traditional medicine for their health problems.
In terms of terminology, Persian traditional medicine, Islamic medicine and traditional medicine have been used interchangeably.
Although, proponents of traditional medicine claim a strong basis for its application, at least in scholarly available literature it has not been proved, specially based on evidence-based sciences.
In search for Islamic medicine’s definition and its foundations a non-systemic literature review with saturation based in authors’ opinion, with attention to relationship between science and religion was conducted.
Medical issues in Qur’an and hadith as well as conventional medicine were searched and based on the relationship between science and religion; there are six perspectives about Islamic medicine. It includes approval, denial, prioritization, or a combination of these opinions.
The article, describing the so-called Islamic medicine from the perspective of Allameh Javadi Amoli and definition suggested by Mehdi Esfahani about Islamic medicine.

Abstract

Bioethics is an interdisciplinary course which includes public health. The public health is a general concept dealing with ethical, spiritual, cognitive, and physical issues. Ethical health is part of bioethics. This paper analyses the discourse between feminism and Islam regarding the influence of gender on ethics. Considering influence or lack of effect of gender on ethics is the most important difference in Islam and feminism. The essence of the difference is in ontology and epistemology principle of both views. Islam considers God as decisive ethic and ethical behaviours while feminism considers human as ethic decisive. In Islam, gender does not play role in origin of humanity and does not cause perfection or imperfection and strength or weak of being human. However, gender influences ethic and ethical behaviours and causes difference in ethical behaviours between man and woman. But, .in feminism view, gender does not affect not only humanity origin but also ethical issues and behaviours. feminism granting ethical similarity between men and women overlooks  ethic-gender roles leading to creation of a system that makes  man and woman  responsible for  and tends to  Bigender by proposing  gender similarity  between men and women ; this attitude  has unethical outcomes and affects  ethical health. This paper aimed to explain Islamic view (Quran and traditions) and outcomes of feminism view about gender effect on ethic along with investigating different sects of feminism.

Abstract

Islamic culture has a bright and comprehensive history in human civilization. Based on Islamic teachings the spirit and body are in close relation with a mutual influence on humans’ health. The Holy Qur’an as well as the Prophet of Islam and his successors (peace be upon them) have paid deep attention to both spirit and body. Moreover, according to religious scholars’ decree (fatwa) cleanness and neatness has been mentioned as the main condition for worships to be accepted. The Prophet (PUH) said: “Neatness is half of the faith”. Therefore, efforts to keep the health of both spirit and body are important to Muslims.  Although, in ancient time, health and medicine were bined together, later they were divided into three sections including health, clinical diagnosis of disease and treatment. Based on Islamic teachings, Muslim scholars learned medicine and then began to translate some Greek, Seriani and Indian medical knowledge into to Arabic language, which has shaped the golden age of Islamic medicine spanning between the 8th and the 15th Centuries.
Among the Islamic countries Iran had a specific place in the field of medical sciences. Jondishapour was one of the most prominent medical educational centers back then. This article elaborates on the status of medicine based on historical evidence as well as Muslim physicians in the golden age of Islamic medicine.

Abstract

Studying the history of medical ethics and analyzing the dynamics and effects of renowned physicians of the Islamic era and the exploitation of this precious heritage is indispensable. Therefore, in this research, by descriptive-analytic approach, , the books of Teb Al-fukhara and Al-Masakin, Ibn al-Jazar, Full medical industry, Ahvazi, Law in Medicine of Ibn Sina, and Kharazmshahi Save of Jorjani were investigated, by analyzing the guidelines and ethical recommendations contained in the physician and patient interactions, as well as their practical applications in this regard, six important principles of Islamic medical ethics were attained: trust in God, profitability, harmlessness, trusteeship, compassion, and goodness. Two principles of profitability and harmlessness have been more emphasized than other ones, which can indicate the significance of these two ethical principles in Islamic teachings. The ethical issues in the field of medical sciences during the Islamic period did not have the diversity, breadth, and necessity of the present. Thus, in pre-natal and human-era discussions, only the prohibition of abortion is mentioned and there is no debate about the end-of-life care of the patient.

Abstract

The increasing number of social and individual problems caused by occupational stress have been indicative of the ineffectiveness of the previous models despite many attempts. This article is intended to measure the current status of organizations in order to correct and reduce staff stress. After obtaining the reliability and validity of the model derived from the review of literature and interviews and the questionnaire of expert opinion, the model test required a field study, so a researcher-made questionnaire was developed with the allocation of 90 items. The questionnaire was prepared for distribution in the high-stress zone of six hospitals including public, military, and private hospitals. After receiving the opinions of the employees in the high-stress zones and analyzing the findings of the statistical population, the conceptual model of occupational stress management from the point view of Islam was obtained and it was based on "God-belief, continuity of life after death and centrality of ethics". Considering that hospitals are one of the most important occupational organizations, the model test was used in the high-stress zones of hospitals' and proved the researchers’ hypothesis. So, the obligation to strengthen religious beliefs was explained in these organizations and the model of occupational stress management of employees from the Islamic point of view was confirmed by assessing the status of organizations. The indicators, components, and dimensions of the above model can be used by authorities of health policy such as Iranian medical council, the ministry of health and medical education, and medical sciences’ universities.

Abstract

The concept of Islamic medicine, which differs from traditional medicine and even Muslims’ medicine, has become more and more popular in recent years in Iran, especially in religious cities. In the present article, we have addressed the extremist approach of the claimants of Islamic medicine (which considers itself a competitor of modern medicine and traditional medicine).Our theoretical basis for the ethical criticism of this approach has been the principlism of "Beauchamp and Childers". Thereby, we have attempted to challenge the clinical position and medical performances of extremists in the Islamic medicine on the basis of four principles of "justice, autonomy, beneficence, and non-maleficence". Then, we have concluded that the claim of the Islamic medicine cannot, in the present circumstances, satisfy the principle of distributive justice. It also violates patients' autonomy by making unfair judgments and fears about modern medicine. It is very prone to harm clients by refusing scientific evaluation of medicines and therapies and lacking a valid certification system.  Accordingly, we  particularly challenged the attribution of this process to Islam.  This attribution may cause serious damage to the religious beliefs of the clients.

Abstract

Muslims learned how to build a hospital using the experiences of physicians from other nations, especially Iranians, by modeling at Jundishapur Hospital, and this way set up many hospitals. In addition to building a variety of hospitals, Muslims created efficient structures and organized them based on bosses, deputies, stewards, supervisors, nurses, and the like, who served in different parts of hospitals. In Islamic hospitals, male and female physicians with various specialties treated patients regardless of religion or race. Using a descriptive-analytical approach based on library information, this research seeks to answer the question of how the structure and organization of hospitals in Islamic civilization have been. Findings of the present research verify that hospitals in Islamic civilization had a well-organized and efficient structure, and various medical departments. Findings also indicate that the structure and organization of Islamic hospitals have evolved over time.

Abstract

One of the most important and influential events in the interaction between Islamic civilization and the West was the Crusades, which lasted for nearly two centuries and extended from Europe to the Levant and Egypt. The main reasons for these wars, apparently, were the religious zeal of the Christians to seize Jerusalem from the Muslims and, in fact, the territorial expansion and influx of the surplus population of Europe to the east. The present study aims to explore the role of the Crusades in the transfer of medicine to Europe. The present research uses a descriptive-analytical method and library resources to explain the process of transferring Islamic and Eastern medical science to the world, affected by religious wars. Referring to texts, honesty and trustworthiness, citation of used texts, avoidance of bias in inference from texts or analyzes have been observed. The results of the research show that during the Crusades, Europeans, observing the scientific progress of Muslims, decided to translate the works of Islamic physicians and transfer them to Europe. This led to the advancement of medical knowledge and the development of health in Europe's Renaissance. Thus, he most important consequence of the Crusades was facilitation of the transfer of the cultural and civilizational foundations of the Islamic world, including the reserves of Islamic and Persian medicine to Europe

Abstract

In summary, this project was carried out in the following steps: reviewing the literature, determining the ethical and legal aspects of the implementation of the electronic health records, reviewing the existing laws and regulations in Iran, identifying the shortcomings and localizing the ethical and legal aspects of implementing electronic health records in Iran, and providing operational suggestions. By reviewing the literature, a list of ethical aspects of electronic health records was extracted and analyzed. Moreover, through reviewing the laws and regulations, it was shown that in the last decade, numerous and diverse laws have been passed in the field of electronic health, especially regarding electronic health records, and there is no serious legal gap in this field in the country. However, certain serious problems were observed including non-implementation or incomplete implementation of some existing laws and regulations, lack of sufficient technical and executive regulations and determining the examples of deviation from the goals of the laws and regulations or their correct implementation, and lack of implementation guarantee for some laws and regulations. Based on the studied documents, the current state of electronic health records in Iran was investigated from legal and ethical aspects, and operational suggestions were presented for its reformation and promotion.

This research aims to investigate the plague in the Sham region during the Umayyad period (661-749AD) Also, examine the reasons for its occurrence and the beliefs surrounding the plague in this region. The investigations of this research show The geographical location of the sham, its Mediterranean climate, and the location of the sham on the trade routes And the resulting changes It has been influential in the occurrence and spread of the plagueThe occurrence of the plague has also had important and interesting effects on the world view of Muslims. So that the plague was not considered an epidemic but as a result of divine mercy or divine punishment.

Abstract

For many years, the question of whether or not to resuscitate periviable newborns has been a topic of debate among perinatologists, neonatologists, and ethicists. Unlike other studies that focus on the value and sanctity of human life during intrauterine development, the present study seeks to address the ethical question of what constitutes the right decision regarding life-support measures for newborns born at peri-viability ages, within the ethical norms of the Islamic tradition. This study assumes the inherent value of every moment of human life and acknowledges the human dignity of individuals from the time of conception. This multi-method study was conducted in three parts: (1) a review of the ethical frameworks presented for supporting the lives of periviable newborns, (2) an explanation of the principles of Islamic bioethics based on common Sunni and Shiite sources, and (3) the development of an Islamic bioethics framework. According to the ethical principles of the Islamic tradition—contrary to secular biomedical ethics—first and foremost, efforts should be made to preserve and prolong the life of periviable newborns regardless of their anticipated quality of life. Second, in decisions involving life and death, the priority is not the preferences of the infant's parents but rather the saving of the infant's life and its preservation by the physician and medical team. Nonetheless, parental participation in the decision-making process is essential. Preserving life, however, is not an absolute obligation; the aim of life-support measures is not merely to extend the infant's life for a short period but to do so in proportion to the prognosis and expected benefits. Specifically, these measures should be considered when there is a significant probability of the newborn’s survival. This requires a case-by-case assessment of risks, taking into account the newborn’s clinical condition, as well as regional resources and conditions. It is recommended to use the proposed Islamic bioethical framework to develop a clinical guideline that includes criteria for classifying infants born at the edge of viability based on their clinical condition. Ethical decisions to intervene should then be based on the infant's clinical state, probability of survival, and the resources available in the region.

Abstract

Induced abortion remains a significant global health concern, with an estimated 73 million procedures performed annually. While legal and medical frameworks vary across countries, many Islamic societies grapple with ethical dilemmas surrounding abortion. This review examines the ethical challenges surrounding abortion within the context of Islamic perspectives. A comprehensive literature search was conducted using the keywords "abortion," "Islam," and "ethics" in combination with Boolean operators (AND, OR) within PubMed, SID, Google Scholar, and other relevant databases. The search was conducted by three independent researchers. Inclusion criteria included articles published between 2014 and 2024 with the keywords appearing in the title, abstract, or keywords, and full-text availability. After removing duplicates, 11 articles met the inclusion criteria. The decision to undergo elective abortion is influenced by various factors, including the desire for pregnancy, maternal and fetal health status, family dynamics, social stigma, and legal and religious regulations. While Islam generally prohibits abortion, ongoing debates arise from challenges related to access to safe abortion methods and the protection of women's rights. Despite the religious prohibition of abortion, restrictions on access to safe abortion services do not eliminate the practice but rather drive women towards unsafe methods, leading to significant physical and psychological harm, particularly among vulnerable populations. Moreover, limitations on prenatal screenings can result in the birth of infants with genetic defects. These factors raise important questions about the effectiveness and ethical implications of restrictive abortion policies in Islamic societies. Ensuring access to safe and legal abortion services, along with comprehensive sexual and reproductive health education, is crucial for improving maternal health outcomes and upholding women's rights within these contexts.

Abstract

Treating patients whose lives are in danger or threatened by irreparable harm, is an obligatory act. However, sometimes, due to old age, the severity of the disease, or the lack of definitive treatment, the patient faces a situation where, according to the diagnosis of the medical staff, starting or continuing the treatment has no effect on patient recovery, or the effect is so insignificant that is ignored in medical practice. This study was conducted using a descriptive and analytical method based on library resources to compare “futile treatment” in medical ethics with “Israf” (extravagance) in Islamic jurisprudence so as to indicate the level of conceptual compatibility between these two concepts. Moreover, considering the illegitimacy of extravagance in jurisprudential teachings, it was attempted to explore whether it is illegitimate, according to Islamic rules, to perform futile treatment. To do so, first, futile treatment and its characteristics in medical texts were defined. Second, the ethical considerations of performing such treatment were explained based on the teachings of medical ethics. Third, extravagance was analyzed in terms of concept, topic, and sentence by referring to valid lexical, jurisprudential, narrative, and interpretative resources. Finally, based on a comparative study, the level of compatibility of futile treatment with extravagance was investigated. The findings of this study showed futile treatment is an example of extravagance as it causes the waste of personal or public property, lacks rational purpose, and does not lead to patient recovery or promotion of health status. Therefore, futile treatment is not considered an obligatory act but even an illegitimate one as it is a clear example of extravagance. In addition to punishment in the afterlife, it entails civil liability as it results in the loss of others’ property.

Abstract

Education in Iran, as in the rest of the world, has a long history, and with the foundation of inclusive national governments, due to the interaction of civilizations and adaptation of scientific achievements, education and educational institutions and centers have undergone major changes and transformations. Accordingly, this study aimed to examine different methods of teaching medical sciences and transferring medical achievements to scholars and those interested in this profession in the history of Iran until the end of the Safavid era through a library-based method. Data were collected from original medical resources, travelogues, and reliable historical documents and evidence in Arabic, Persian, and English. Data were then described and analyzed using domestic databanks. The findings indicated that throughout the history of Iran, particularly in the Islamic civilization, medical education and sciences have been transferred both theoretically and practically. In modern terms, this involved lectures (theory) and clinical training (practice). Nevertheless, there have been differing opinions regarding the importance and priority of each method, and the period under study witnessed significant evolution and changes in improving the ways medical concepts have been conveyed to scholars.

Abstract

The plague of 1896 AD/1314 AH was one of the most devastating epidemics in history that occurred in Bombay, India. This disease had a profound impact on human societies, particularly Islamic societies, and on the pilgrimage of Muslims between 1896 and 1899. This historical review study analyzed the consequences of the plague outbreak in Bombay, India, in 1896 AD/1314 AH on the pilgrimage process of Muslims in the mentioned year and the following years. This study also examined the type of exposure of Muslims to this disease and the restrictions imposed by the governments of the time. Data were collected from historical resources such as reports in Hajj travelogues, historical documents, Arabic press news, recent research by Western researchers, and scientific articles. The findings indicated that the ruling governments attempted to prevent the spread of the disease and reduce casualties by establishing and developing quarantine facilities, dispatching medical teams, shortening the permitted duration of pilgrims’ stay in Saudi Arabia, and persuading Muslims to forgo the Hajj pilgrimage. The success of these preventive measures hinged on two main factors: first, the necessary executive power to enforce restrictions, and second, the mitigation of economic insecurity for communities simultaneously affected by illness and pilgrimage. Furthermore, the acceptance of these limitations was significantly influenced by Muslim perceptions of the restrictions and their cultural and religious backgrounds.

Abstract

The history of medicine during the Safavid period (907-1135 AH) in Iran, as one of the important periods, has always been the focus of researchers. The main objective of this study was to conduct a quantitative evaluation of articles related to the “history of medicine in the Safavid period” in Iran. This descriptive-analytical, applied study was conducted using a quantitative approach. The statistical population of the study comprised all scientific productions on the history of medicine in the Safavid period indexed in domestic and international scientific databases over 22 years, from 2001 to March 2024. During the period under review, a total of 247 articles in the field of the history of medicine in the Safavid period were published with the participation of 542 authors. In terms of thematic orientation, 18.2% of the published works were on the biographies of physicians, while research, translation, and editing of medical manuscripts ranked next with 16.1%. Among universities and scientific centers, Tehran University of Medical Sciences and Islamic Azad University ranked first. Male participation accounted for approximately 60%, exceeding that of female authors, and about 68% of the works were the result of collaborative research. The Journal of Islamic and Iranian Traditional Medicine published the highest number of articles. The most common type of publication was original research articles. Content analysis showed that, despite significant growth in this research field, an excessive concentration on specific topics, such as physicians’ biographies, has limited scholarly attention to other dimensions of medical history in this period, highlighting the need for broader and more balanced research perspectives.
