Abstract

Background & Objectives: Food security (access to safe, nutritious, affordable food) is one of the important determinants of health status in human life. Since monitoring and assessing of associated factors to food security are essential for health planning, this study has tried to determine household food security status and food consumption amongst high school student families in Esfahan, Iran.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in autumn 2008 on 580 high school 14-17y students of Esfahan, Iran using a systematic cluster sampling. Food security and food frequency questionnaire were completed by interviewing mothers and students.
Results: The prevalence of household food insecurity was estimated as 36.6% (95%CI: 33-40%). Household food insecurity was positively associated with frequency of some food group intakes among students, including bread macaroni potato legume and eggs (P<0.05). In addition, negative associations were observed between food insecurity and frequency of other food group intakes including rice, red meat, sausage and hamburger, poultry, fish, green vegetables, root and bulb(colored) vegetables, melons, banana, pineapple, coconut, mango, apple, orange, milk, and yogurt (P<0.05).
Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that food insecurity is prevalent among (students) households in Esfahan. In addition, students living in food-insecure households more frequently consumed cheap foods containing high energy per kilogram. Therefore, appropriate nutritional programs should be designed to improve the quality of household food consumption.

Abstract

Background & Objectives: Chronic pain is one of main public and individual health problems and its epidemiological understanding needs reliable estimates of prevalence. The aim of this study was to investigate the epidemiology of chronic pain in all 368 neighborhoods of Tehran using small area estimation method.
Methods: The pain section from the second round of Urban HEART data from a selected individual of 23457 households in Tehran using a multistage randomized cluster sampling in 2011, were analyzed. In order to obtain reliable estimates for chronic pain prevalence at neighborhood level, a generalized linear mixed model and hierarchical Bayesian approach were used and the reliability of the estimates were evaluated.
Results: The average of estimated prevalence of chronic pain in neighborhoods of Tehran was 25.5% and a large heterogeneity was observed in its prevalence in neighborhoods of Tehran. Prevalence of chronic pain was significantly higher in married housewives, retirees and pensioners and was significantly associated with age, educational status, depression and anxiety (P<0.05). The reliability of Bayesian method was confirmed by evaluation methods in this analysis.
Conclusion: These results demonstrate prevailing amount of chronic pain at neighborhood-level in Tehran, which warrants careful attention to prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation by health care professionals.

Abstract

Background and Objectives: Foot and mouth disease (FMD) is the most significant livestock disease in the world and can cause great economic losses to the population of domestic ruminants. This study aims to investigate the economic impacts of FMD on dairy farms in West Azerbaijan province during the period of 2017-18.
Methods: Employing a questionnaire survey, this study covered all industrial dairy farms affected by the disease in eight units during the specified period. The results underwent descriptive analysis using Excel software version 2013 and SPSS version 18.
Results: Absolute (in million Rials) and relative (percent) losses attributable to FMD were categorized as follows: mortality losses amounted to 2,170 million Rials (60.6%), distress sale of livestock reached 713 million Rials (19.9%), treatment incurred 288.65 million Rials (8.1%), short-term reduction of milk production accounted for 193.35 million Rials (5.4%), extra labor costs totaled 152.4 million Rials (4.3%), abortion amounted to 35 million Rials (1%), and sampling costs were 32 million Rials (0.9%). The total losses from FMD in dairy industrial farms were estimated at 3584.4 million Rials, equivalent to 38,758 dollars at the average exchange rate of one dollar to 92,487 Rials in 2018.
Conclusion: The substantial investment in dairy farms amplifies the economic impact of FMD, resulting in prolonged recovery periods and contributing to a decline in livestock and dairy production in the province and the country.
