Abstract

Background and Aim: Pruritus is one of the most disabling complications in patients with chronic renal failure that have negative effect on patients' quality of life. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of the uremic pruritus and its associated factors in hemodialysis patients referred to the dialysis centers in Golestan Province.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, all 375 patients referred to eight dialysis centers in Golestan Province were selected via census sampling method. Data were gathered by using demogeraphic and Yosipovitch pruritus questionnaires. Data analysis was performed using SPSS software through conducting t and chi square tests.

Results: The mean ± standard deviation of patients' age was 48.36 ± 13.27 years and 51.2% of patients were male. One hundred and eighty one (48.3%) patients had uremic pruritus. The lowest and highest frequency of pruritus among surveyed centers were 37.9% and 57.1%, respectively. 60.2 % of patients had localized pruritus and the most common location was back (68.8 %). There was a statistically significant correlation between uremic pruritus with number of dialysis session (P<0.001) and serum level of phosphorus (P<0.001). 

Conclusion: The results indicated that uremic pruritus is still one of the most common problems in hemodialysis patients. Therefore it seems necessary providing ways to eliminating or reducing the problem.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Pemphigus vulgaris (PV) is the most common bullous autoimmune disease, which can cause mortality and morbidity in the patients who suffer from it. Researches to find reliable noninvasive laboratory tests to diagnose and monitor PV patients are being conducted.The aim of this study is to find the sensitivity of serum and salivary anti-DSG1 and anti-DSG3 antibodies in the diagnosis of PV by ELISA and to compare the results of serum and salivary autoantibodies with each other. Methods: In this case-control study, 40 newly diagnosed patients with PV were recruited. Forty healthy controls were also recruited to this study. The clinical diagnosis of PV was confirmed by histopathology and direct immunofluorescence (DIF). Demographic data, disease severity and phenotypes were recorded on the questionnaires, which were developed for this study. DSG1 and DSG3 ELISA test were performed on serum and salivary samples of patients and controls. Results: The mean±standard deviation age of patients, 43.37±11.94, with a range of 26 to 71 years. The sensitivities of serum anti-DSG3 and anti-DSG1 were 85% (34 cases had positive test results) and 90%, (36 cases had positive test results) respectively. The sensitivities of salivary anti-DSG3 and anti-DSG1 antibodies were accordingly 42.5% (17 cases had positive test results) and 60%, (24 cases had positive test results) respectively. Conclusion: While the sensitivities of serum ELISA in detection of anti-DSG1 and anti-DSG3 were significantly higher than those of salivary ELISA, since the levels of the latter are chnaging in parallel to those of serum ELISA, they might be used to monitor the disease activity.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Demand for cosmetic surgeries is very high, especially in Iran and is affected by economic, social and psychological variables. The aim of this study was to compare the beliefs about appearance, irrational beliefs and presentation of body mass in individuals who demand and who do not demand cosmetic surgery procedures.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at the Shahid Sadoghi Savaneh va Soukhtegi Hospital in Yazd in 2014. The questionnaires were given to 150 individuals who were looking for cosmetic surgery, of which 126 completed questionnaires were considered eligible for analyses.

Results: There was a statistically significant difference in BMI and beliefs about appearance between who demand cosmetic surgery and who do not (P=0.022, P=0.017, respectively). Those who were looking for cosmetic surgery had more irrational beliefs in comparison with who were not (P=0.017). Mean of irrational beliefs was higher in females than males, but there was no statistically significant difference in the means of beliefs about appearance among women and men (P=0.131). Also, the mean of beliefs about appearance and irrational beliefs scores both were higher among single people than married ones (P=0.049 and P=0.045, respectively).

Conclusion: Gender, BMI and cognitive characteristics, especially irrational beliefs regarding attractiveness played significant roles in the those demanding cosmetic surgery. We suggest that people consult dietitians and psychology counselors before making decisions about undergoing a cosmetic surgery procedure.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Considering the high global incidence of skin cancer and the high mortality rate caused by melanoma, it is important to identify the genes involved in this disease and predict effective drugs. Therefore, in this study, we have identified and investigated the expression level of effective and key genes in melanoma metastasis, as well as investigating their diagnostic potential as biological markers and finding effective drugs on the expression of these genes.
 
Methods: In this study, we have used 46 cancer samples without metastasis and 12 cancer samples with metastasis from the GEO database and from the GSE15605 study with 74 samples including 16 normal samples. Gene expression profile in this study was generated by GPL570 platform containing 54675 probes. The latest GPL570 annotation file has been downloaded and initial processing was done.
 
Results: The results showed that the expression level of candidate genes in metastasis samples had a significant change compared to normal samples. The results of analysing the data related to candidate genes in this study indicated that the drugs Glucosamine, Ad-E2F-1 plus Doxorubicn, GSI, Torcetrapib, Ribavirin and NSC319726 could be effective on the expression of MYH10, SPRR3 and TOP2A genes, respectively. On the other hand, the results from the drug bank database revealed that various drugs such as Amsacrine, Dexrazoxane, Valrubicin, Teniposide can have an inhibitory role on the TOP2A gene.
 
Conclusion: GEO database was used to identify key genes in melanoma metastasis and DRUGBANK was used to identify drugs that affect the expression of these genes.
