Abstract

Background and Aim: Hirsutism is one of the most common reasons for which women visit dermatology and beauty clinics. Lasers have got considerable popularity during last two decades because they can reduce unwanted hairs. This study was conducted to evaluate the satisfaction of patients with hirsutism traeted with diode laser, IPL or combination of both. Methods: In this retrospective study, hirsute patients referred to Yazd Laser Center from October 2011 until October 2012 were studied. Patient satisfaction from the amount of hair loss one month after starting treatment, one month after the end of treatment and 6 months after treatment were asked using telephone. Results: Patient satisfaction one month after the end of the treatment with diode laser was higher than the other two methods (P=0.034). Patient satisfactions at one month after initiation of the treatment and six months after the end of the treatment were not the statistically significant. The number of laser sessions was similar in the three groups. Conclusion: Results of the current study revealed that there was no significant difference in the patient satisfaction with diode laser, IPL and combination of both methods in the treatment of hirsutism 6 months after the end of the treatment.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Hair loss is a chronic and frequent dermatological condition. It negatively affects the psychological status, social relationships and daily activities of the patients The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalnce of depression in women with hair loss in a referral dematology clinic in Yazd, Iran.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted from March 21 to June 21, 2015. Fifty-four women suffering from hair loss referred to the Shahid Sadoughi Dermatology Clinic in Yazd were recruited. Depression assessed by using the Beck Depression Inventory. Data were analyzed using versioin 18 of PASW (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA) and Fisher's exact test was used for comparing proportions in different groups.

Results: The mean ± standard deviation score of depression was 16.1±13.5. The study showed that 67% of hair loss patients were experiencing depression. While not statitically significant, frequency of depression seems to be associated with the level of education (P=0.052). There was no associatioin between the frequency of depression and age, marital status, previous medical history, or drug use.

Conclusion: This study showed that depression is highly frequent among women with hair loss. Beauty is crucial for most women and feeling the lack of beauty and not being attractive decrease their social interaction. More effective treatment of hair loss may improve depression and community relations, and consequently result in higher quality of life in a hair loss patient.

Abstract

Background and Aim: One of the most important characteristics of women and girls is their eagerness for showing their beauty, which is commonly achieved by using cosmetics and doing makeup. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of cosmetics use among high school and university students girls in Yazd city and to measure their  knowledge, attitude and practices.

Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 400 female high school and university students in Yazd city in 2016. Data were gathered using a four-part questionnaire, which was designed to collect demographic data of the participants as well as, items needed for assessment of knowledge, attitudes, and practice of the participants about using cosmetics. The collected data were described and analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA) version 22. Independent t, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), and chi square tests were used for statistical analyses.

Results:  The mean scores of knowledge, attitude and practices of the participants showed that the mean knowledge score of them was related to the age, level of education of parents, parent's occupation and household income (P<0.05). The mean attitude score of the participants was also related to the age, level of education of parents, and parent's occupation (P<0.05). The mean practices score of the participants was related to the age, level of education of parents, and parent's occupation as well (P<0.05). Those who did not use cosmetics, had a more proper attitude towards using cosmetics (P=0.01).

Conclusion: This study demonstrated that the use of cosmetics among female high school and university students in Yazd was high. Proper training in appropriate use of the cosmetics is needed.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Skin wrinkles are typically the result of aging process. Botulinum toxin injection is a method that has many applicants. This study was performed to determine the personality disorders individuals who requested to inject botulinum toxin to improve facial wrinkles.

Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was performed on women and men with facial wrinkles who were referred for botulinum toxin injection to laser clinic of Yazd in 2016. The Millon questionnaire was used to determine the personality disorders. Finally, the data were analyzed by using SPSS 22 software and descriptive statistical tests.

Results: 51 individuals participated in this study with a mean age of 35.9±9.5 years. The highest frequencies were in the age group under 35 years old with 26 (51%), females with 45 (88.2%), Bachelor's degree and above with 31 (60.8%) and married status with 35 (68.6% individuals). Obsessive-compulsive disorder with frequency of 7 (13.7%) and dramatic personality trait with frequency of 6 (11.8%) were the most common disorders after normal condition. The influence of factors such as age, sex, education and marital status were not significant in the prevalence of personality disorders.

Conclusion: Most individuals who requested botulinum toxin injection had a normal psychiatric condition followed by obsessive-compulsive disorder and dramatic personality trait. This indicates the importance of beauty in the social status of the individuals which forces them to remove wrinkles for a more effective presence in the community.

Abstract

Background and Aim: The use of medicinal herbs for the treatment of skin disease, such as acne, has a long history. The extract of Pistaca atlantica is used to treat various diseases. This study was designed to evaluate the short-term efficacy and safety of Pistaca atlantica extract for the treatment of mild to moderate acne.
Methods: This clinical trial was performed on 60 patients with mild to moderate acne, who where randomly divided into two groups. After obtaining informed consent, volunteers in the case group received a topical extract of 15% Pistaca Atlantica once daily for 6 weeks. In the control group, placebo was given in the same way. Patients were evaluated for the number of lesions at the beginning, and 3 and 6 weeks after treatment.
Results: At the end of study, the mean reduction in lesions was 59.93% in the Pistaca atlantica group and -11.46% in the control group. Also Skin softness and lucidity were observed in the Pistaca atlantica group.
Conclusion: This clinical study showed that topical treatment with Pistaca atlantica extract can be recommended to improve mild to moderate acne. However, a longer study with larger sample size is needed to achieve a comprehensive evaluation of the efficacy and safety of this plant.
