Abstract

Emergence and spread of various diseases in the past century have been associated with many problems for the health care providers. Now a days, with advancement of technology, new methods such as cell therapy, are available, efficient and successful in some clinical areas. To use any cell, it is necessary to identify its source, so herein, we reviewed the literature of a new source of adult stem cells in the bulge of hair follicle.

Hair is composed of two parts: root and shaft. Proximal two-thirds of the hair root, called hair follicle that is surrounded by two dermal and epidermal sheaths. Epidermal sheath included inner and outer root sheath. Outer root sheath at the junction of the errector pilli muscle and sebaceous glands make the bulge that includes stem cells.

In this review we described anatomy of the hair follicle, hair growth cycle, hair follicle bulge, embryonic source of hair follicle, isolation of bulge stem cells using cell surface markers, gene expression and differentiation in bulge stem cells directing differentiation of bulge stem cells in normal skin repair, and practical advantages of bulge stem cells over other stem cells.

Abstract

Background and Aim: The present world is a world of short-sectional relationships, most people identify themselves by acknowledging their appearance instead of considering their inherited or acquired different characteristics. In this study, we decided to compare the body image between patients with skin diseases and healthy participants.

Methods: In this case-control study, 300 (150 cases and 150 controls) individuals aged from 18 to 64 years were selected in the Isfahan city. Satisfaction with body image and feelings of respondents regarding their apparent looks in different situations and different conditions were investigated using an a researcher-constructed questionnaire. To analyze the collected data, we used the analysis of covariance and compared the means.

Results: Single, younger, and less educated women had body image scores higher and more positive look to their bodies. Healthy people had higher score of body image than the patients with skin diseases. There was no significant relationship between gender and body image scores.

Conclusion: Skin diseases had an important role in body image. So we suggest that the effect of other diseases, that somehow affect the appearance of people on body image, be examined deeply for each disease.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Acne is one of the most common diseases among young individuals. Controversial findings are reported about the effect of glycemic index (GI) and glycemic load (GL) of the diet on acne vulgaris. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of GI and GL of diet on severity of acne.

Methods: All relevant studies on effects of GI or GL on acne published up to December 2016 were collected using PubMed, Google Scholar, Science direct, Ovid and Cochrane library.

Results: Of 714 articles in our initial research, 6 interventional and 3 case-control studies were included.
Case-control studies revealed that patients with acne vulgaris consumed diets with a higher GI rather than control group. Intervention with a low GI diet reduced lesion counts and improved the severity of acne as well as insulin sensitivity compared with those under high GI diet.

Conclusion: Overall, a diet with low GI and GL could improve acne severity and inflammatory lesions.

Abstract

Vitiligo is a common disorder in skin pigmentation and has an important role in patient’s quality of life. It may also cause severe emotional stress which makes its treatment necessary. As conventional therapeutic strategies are ineffective, there is an increasing tendency to use complementary medicine in the management of vitiligo. This article has been written with the aim of describing Iranian Traditional Medicine (ITM) approach to vitiligo mechanisms, prognosis and natural therapeutics. It is a product of a library study in the main ITM references and also related articles using mentioned keywords.

According to ITM text books human body consists of four substantial humors, each has a very specific quality and quantity. Any excess or deficit of these humors may result in different disorders. Changing in phlegm humor and also improper function of “expulsive faculty” are the main causes of vitiligo from the viewpoint of ITM.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Allergic contact dermatitis is the most frequent cause of eyelid dermatitis; but it is often misdiagnosed. This study aims to evaluate the characteristics of patients with eyelid dermatitis who referred for patch test.

Methods: This was a retrospective study. Three major subgroups were made: patients with only eyelid involvement, involvement of eyelids and other areas, and without eyelid involvement. Collected data included past history, diagnoses, personal care product & make-up use, occupational dermatitis, and positive allergens. Chi-squared, independent t-test, and one-way ANOVA were used for analysis.

Results: 139 patients with eyelid dermatitis who referred for patch test were included in the study. Allergic contact dermatitis was the most common diagnosis in all three groups referred for patch test. Use of shaving cream and hair conditioner was significantly higher in patients with only eyelid involvement and nickel sulphate was the most common allergen among them.

Conclusion: Patch testing is an important tool in the evaluation of the common dermatologic disease of eyelid contact dermatitis, as the gold standard. It is a necessity in the treatment of eyelid dermatitis, because of accurate identification of responsible allergens.
