Abstract

Hair loss can be viewed a problem from different perspectives: as a disease, a disorder which affects appearance of an individual, and its psychological effects. Therefore, it is crucial to determine the causes and types of hair loss. This review summarized hair loss evaluation methods with significant emphasis on their clinical aspects. According to relevant literature reviews, the major approaches to hair loss are taking medical history, primary investigations and detailed hair examination. Although several invasive and non-invasive, clinical and paraclinical examinations can be used for hair loss assessment, it is generally accepted that using clinical evaluation methods and physical examinations are more efficient. In conclusion, diagnosing hair loss is complex and sometimes time-consuming process. However, precise hair examination may lead to the suspicion of an endocrine disorder.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Seborrheic dermatitis is a chronic dermatitis that has been observed in both neonates and adults. It has been reported following stress, decreasing of mental and somatic energy, tiredness, insomnia, excitability, depression, etc. All of mentioned effects have adverse effects on health activity and result in body weakness. The aim of this study was evaluating general health indices of Arak Islamic Azad university students that suffered from seborrheic dermatitis using Goldberg scale.
Methods: Three hundred and eighteen students were randomly selected and examined, among them 101 students who suffered from seborrheic dermatitis completed the General Health Questionnaire and then the data were statistically described and analyzed.
Results: Forty-one percent of students with seborrheic dermatitis had body symptoms. Anxiety, communicative act failure and depression were observed in 48%, 65% and 31% of patients, respectively.
Conclusion: The findings of this study indicated the strong relationship between seborrheic dermatitis and communicative act failure.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Skin cancer is the most common malignancy in the world with high morbidity and relatively low mortality. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common type of cancer and its incidence is increasing. The purpose of this study was to investigate the incidence of skin cancer in the years 1386 to 1390 is in the Markazi Province, Iran.

Methods: In this study the data of Markazi Province Cancer Registry were used and incidence rate was calculated per 100,000 person. Age standardized incidence rates were calculated via direct standardization method using world standard population. Finally, the data were analyzed using SPSS, Excel, and WinPepi softwares.

Results: In Markazi Province, 958 patients with skin cancer were recorded during 1386-90. The age-standardized incidence rates in these years were 21.54, 12.06, 13.79, 18.29 and 15.79 per 100,000 people respectively. There was no significant change in the trend of skin cancer incidence rates.

Conclusion: Skin cancer was higher in men than women, and most cases occur in the elderly. Development of screening programs is recommended to detect skin cancer in its early stages in older men, especially in those who have been exposed to the sun for long times.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Hirsutism as a clinical presentation of hyperandrogenism has a negative impact on the mental health and quality of life. Therefore, determination of its prevalence and associated factors in communities are important. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of hirsutism and its associated factors in dormitory students of Semnan University of Medical Sciences in Semana, Iran.

Methods: In this cross-sectional study, all of the female students of Semnan University of Medical Sciences dormitory were given a questionnaire which consists of three parts. The first two sections was designed to collect the demographic data and medical history including past medical history, drug history, menstrual condition and familial history of hirsutism. The third section included the grading scale of Ferrimen-Gallwey, that contains images of various parts of the body and hair growth. Participants were asked to determine their hair growth on the pictures. Data was analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics (IBM Corp., Armonk, NY, USA) version 19. Chi squared test was used for comparison of proportions in different groups.

Results: From 330 participants, 119 students (36.1%) complained from hirsutism. 105 (31.8%) patients had mild and 14 (4.3%) students had moderate hirsutism. There was a significant correlation between hirsutism and irregular menstrual cycles, positive familial history of hirsutism, congenital adrenal hyperplasia, polycystic ovary, hypothyroidism, use of danazol, and hoarseness (P<0.05).

Conclusion: This study showed a high prevalence of hirsutism in dormitory students of Semnan University of Medical Sciences. More clinical evaluation is suggested to determine various forms of hirsutism and the underlying conditions.

Abstract

Background and Aim: The cosmetic surgery is one of the prevalent phenomenons in recent decades. Body image is a key factor for interest in cosmetic surgery, but body image is a multidimensional concept and all its dimensions should be studied. This study aimed to study cognitive, emotional and behavioral dimensions of body image in women interested in cosmetic surgery.

Methods: This study was a cross-sectional research with causal-comparative method. A sample of 600 female students, age 18 to 35 years, were selected from universities in Tehran by using multi-stage cluster random sampling methid, who completed a set of questionnaires including “Beliefs About Appearance Scale (BAAS)“, “Body Areas Satisfaction Scale (BASS)“, “the Body Image Coping Strategies Inventory (BICSI)“ and Acceptance of Cosmetic Surgery Scale (ACSS). The collected data were analyzed by multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA).

Results: The students who were interested in cosmetic surgery got a higher score in components of body investment as cognitive dimension and body dissatisfaction as emotional dimension. Among the three behavioral components of body image, there was significant difference only in appearance fixing coping (P<0.0001) and there were no significant differences in acceptance and avoidant strategies between students.

Conclusion: All of the cognitive, emotional and behavioral dimensions of body image are important in cosmetic surgery, and women interested in cosmetic surgery not only had body dissatisfaction, but also had dysfunctional attitudes about appearance important in interpersonal relationships, personal achievement and self-concept, and used strategies based on body modification. These findings can be used in prevention and intervention programs.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Among destructive treatments for removal of unwanted hair, hair removal laser devices have widely replaced the old fashion methods due to their safety and effectiveness. The purpose of this study was to analyze the effective factors on treating unwanted hairs with a laser device.
Methods: This retrospective study, was performed on records of 122 patients who referred to a hair and skin clinic .Patients with hirsutism or other diseases were excluded. Hair thickness and color, skin color, number of laser sessions, age and sessions interval were evaluated. The collected data were analyzed by compeutering program SPSS version 21, analytic tests chi-square and logistic regression (P less than 0.05 considered meaningful).
Results: The average age of participants was 31.3±6.6 years. The average number of laser sessions was 5.4±2.1 and the most satisfying outcome was observed in dark hairs and more than 5 sessions (P<0.05). Multivariate logistic regression model illustrated that the number of sessions directly impacts the effectiveness of treating unwanted hair (P<0.05). Level below the rock curve and the sensitivity were 0.71(0.61-0.81) and 0.759, respectively.
Conclusion: This study showed that hair thickness and color, number of laser sessions are important factors on hair removal treatments by laser. For optimal outcome more sessions with longer follow up is recommended.

Mycobacterium leprae and Mycobacterium lepromatosis that are the acid-fast bacillus are known to be cause of leprosy. Genetic factors and immunological function have some roles in susceptibility of developing leprosy. There are some cases of familial leprosy.

Case Report: Here in, we report a case of familial leprosy which in one member it was symptomatic and others were asymptomatic with positive skin smear for mycobacterium leprosy bacilli.

Conclusion: We recommend in addition to approach and manage lepromatous patients, their families be also evaluated.
