Abstract

Skin is the largest organ of the integumentary system with multiples important functions. Due to its complex structure, the permeability skin status can be modified by different external and internal factors such as chemical and physical stresses, and several skin and systemic diseases. Today, different non-invasive methods are used to assess the skin barrier biophysical properties. The parameters such as transepidermal water loss, stratum corneum hydration, skin surface pH and skin surface lipids is essential for evaluation of the epidermal barrier status. Application of these methods is critical for evaluation of disease treatments, the effectiveness of topically applied drugs and cosmetic products. The aim of this article is to review application of several methods for skin biophysical and biomechanical properties in humans.

Abstract

Great progress in optics, electronic engineering, and computer science provide an opportunity to diagnosis of skin diseases, estimating effectiveness of drugs and skin care products using non-invasive, non-destructive methods of analysis. Also many noninvasive methods using analytic devices are developed to assessment of the outcomes of dermatologic surgeries on malignant skin tumors. The aim of this article is to review advanced methods for skin analysis on human’s skin such as magnetic resonance imaging and time domain reflectometry. Many kind of interesting applications are defined for using these methods especially in cosmetic pressures.

Abstract

There are different ways to treat local obesity and cellulite including invasive and noninvasive methods. Due to the fact that noninvasive methods have significantly lower rates of adverse effects, they become more popular. One of these methods is acoustic wave therapy (AWT) or shock wave therapy (SWT). In addition to treating cellulite, SWT has been found useful for some other conditions. In this paper, we briefly introduce SWT and describe the protocol and results of treating cellulite and local obesity using Callactor® SC1 device (Storz Medical, Switzerland) in three females with normal body mass indices.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Skin cancer is the most common malignancy in the world with high morbidity and relatively low mortality. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common type of cancer and its incidence is increasing. The purpose of this study was to investigate the incidence of skin cancer in the years 1386 to 1390 is in the Markazi Province, Iran.

Methods: In this study the data of Markazi Province Cancer Registry were used and incidence rate was calculated per 100,000 person. Age standardized incidence rates were calculated via direct standardization method using world standard population. Finally, the data were analyzed using SPSS, Excel, and WinPepi softwares.

Results: In Markazi Province, 958 patients with skin cancer were recorded during 1386-90. The age-standardized incidence rates in these years were 21.54, 12.06, 13.79, 18.29 and 15.79 per 100,000 people respectively. There was no significant change in the trend of skin cancer incidence rates.

Conclusion: Skin cancer was higher in men than women, and most cases occur in the elderly. Development of screening programs is recommended to detect skin cancer in its early stages in older men, especially in those who have been exposed to the sun for long times.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Wart is one of the most common viral diseases of skin caused by human papilloma virus (HPV) and results in high costs for therapeutic, cosmetic and hygienic interventions. Euphorbia is an annual plant belonging to Euphorbiaceae family that has seventy species. All of them have latexes with high medicinal values. These plants have anti-viral and anti-tumor substances and 10 species of them are used in traditional medicine for treatment of ulcers, tumors, warts, and other diseases. In this study, the therapeutic effect of Euphorbia macrolada latex on common warts is compared with the standard keratolytic treatment. Methods: The latex of E. macrolada was prepared from Dehgolan region in Kurdistan Province and used directly. The standard keratolytic solution, which contained 16.7 g salicylic acid, 16.7 g lactic acid and up to 100 g collodion was prepared and delivered by the Hamedan Behzisti Pharmacy. A double-blind trial was conducted in Farshchian Hospital, Hamedan, Iran on 88 patients (44 in each group). They were instructed to apply the solutions on their warts twice daily for maximum of 8 weeks. Results: All lesions in both groups were cured after 8 weeks. The meanstandard deviation (SD) of time to cure was 4.51.4 weeks in E. macrolada group and 5.11.6 weeks in the control group. None of these differences were statistically significant (P>0.05). No adverse effects was observed in any of patients. Conclusion: The findings indicated that E. macrolada had a therapeutic effect on common warts. Based on the results of this study, latex of this plant can be used as a complementary or alternative medicine in the treatment of patients with common warts.
