Abstract

ackground and Aim: Vitiligo is a chronic skin disease which manifests with depigmented patches as a result of absence of skin melanocytes. Vitiligo results in beauty problems which could cause mental disorders. The purpose of this research was to compare the tendency to suicide and stress in patients with vitiligo with those without any skin disease.

Methods: For conducting this research, 30 patients with vitiligo who were referred to the Behsima Skin and Laser Clinic in Tehran during 2016 were recruited. Data were collected using Beck suicide scale ideation and Kohen stress  questionnaires. Thirty demographically-matched individuals without active skin disease over the past six months  were recruited into the study as the control group.

Results:  Mean±standard deviation (SD)  of Beck suicide scale ideation (BSSI) score in patients with vitiligo was 3.67±1.33, significantly higher than 0.37±0.17 in the control group (P=0.02). Mean scores of stress in vitiligo patients was 28.33±9.20, which was also higher than the control group mean, 21.77±8.19 (P=0.005).

Conclusion: Patients with vitiligo had more suicide ideation and stress than normal population. So, in taking care and treating in vitiligo patients, a special attention to the  psychological effects of disease on the lives of the patients is recommended.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Trichotillomania (hair pulling disorder) is a chronic disorder, characterized by frequent hair pulling leading to hair loss. This disorder despite having multiple physical, economic and social consequences, is less likely to be diagnosed and treated. In the present study, we investigated the efficacy of emotion regulation therapy (ERT) on symptom’s severity, anxiety, depression, stress and quality of life in individuals with trichotillomania.

Methods: Six patients were selected by available sampling method, and Massachusettes General Hospital (MGH-HPS) scale, Depression, Anxiety, Stress-DASS-21 scale, WHOQOL-26 Quality of Life questionnaire, and DERS Emotion Regulation questionnaire were used. Gross 8-session protocol (each session 90 minutes) was delivered on a weekly basis for each participant individually. Data were analyzed by visual analysis, percent of recovery, Freidman nonparametric test and Wilcoxon test.

Results: ERT lead to significant reduction in symptoms of hair pulling, depression, anxiety, stress, difficulty in regulating emotion and improved quality of life in patients with trichotillomania.

Conclusion: ERT significantly improves emotional problems and symptoms of hair pulling in the patients with trichotillomania. As a result, this treatment can be used as an effective treatment for this disorder.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Skin cancer is the most common malignancy in the world with high morbidity. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of stress inoculation training on quality of life and life expectancy in patients with skin cancer.

Methods: This research was a semi experimental study with pre test - post test - follow up assessment in experimental and control group. The study population consisted of all male patients with skin cancer at Negah Clinic Center in Saveh during the year 2017. Thirty patients were recruited by randomization followed by random allocation dividing them into two groups of 15 subjects. The training included 6 weekly sessions and subjects were asked to fill quality of life and life expectancy questionnaires both at the beginning and end of the coarse. Data was analyzed using ANOVA with repeated measure.

Results: There was a significant difference in life expectancy between the experimental group and control group (P<%001). Furthermore, similar significant difference was found between two groups regarding quality of life.

Conclusion: Stress inoculation training can be used as a valuable and practical intervention in patients with skin cancer, which leads to a significant improvement both in quality of life and life expectancy.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Cosmetic surgery is one of the last achievements of human being for creation of beauty. The purpose of this study was to explain the relationship between personality traits and perceived stress with body image.

Methods: This is a correlation type study relying on structural equation modeling. A total of 350 applicants for cosmetic surgery who referred to surgical centers in northern Tehran in 2017 were voluntarily selected by convenient and purposive sampling method. They filled the demographic, perceived stress by Cohen et al (1983), the personality by NEO, body image concern by Littelton questionnaires .Data analysis was done at descriptive and inferential levels using version 24 of SPSS, AMOS and with normality tests, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), structural equation modeling.

Results: The results showed that there is a significant relationship between personality traits and body image concern. There were significant relationships between perceived stress and body image concern, and also between personality traits and perceived stress. Also, the structural model of the body image concern based on personality traits and perceived stress had a favorable fit.

Conclusion: It is necessary to use standardized scales to understand and evaluate psychological pre- cosmetic surgery, and this screening can reduce the number of unnecessary cosmetic surgeries and increase the satisfaction of surgical outcomes.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Psoriasis is a chronic skin disease. Emotion regulation difficulty in patients with psoriasis emphasizes the importance of including a broader approach in clinical management of psoriatic patients. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) on cognitive emotion regulation in patients with psoriasis.

Methods: This study was a semi-experimental study with pre-test, post-test and follow-up. The study population included all the patients with psoriasis referred to specialized dermatology clinics in Khorramabad. The patients were first screened using the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Then 24 patients with psoriasis were selected through convenience sampling method and randomly allocated into experimental and control groups. The instrumental of this study was Cognitive Emotion Regulation Questionnaire (Garnefski & Kraaij, 2006). The experimental group received MBSR intervention during eight sessions. Data analysis was done at descriptive and inferential levels using version 23 of SPSS and with normality tests, MANCOVA and ANCOVA.

Results: MBSR increased the scores of adaptive strategies and decreased the scores of maladaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies in patient with psoriasis and the effect of treatment was stable at the end of follow-up period (P<0.001).

Conclusion: MBSR skills training can be used as an effective intervention to improve cognitive emotion regulation in patients with psoriasis.

Abstract

Background and Aim: The presence of variables such as stress, depression and anxiety can overshadow the life of any individual and deviate them from the main path and consequently, from achieving their goals. Therefore, the present study aimed to investigate the efficacy of commitment  and acceptance based therapy (ACT) on reducing stress, depression and anxiety in people with gastrointestinal and skin disorders.

Methods: The research method was quasi-experimental with pretest-posttest design, utilizing a control group. The recraited population included all patients with skin and hair disorders, as well as gastrointestinal disorders of psychosomatic origin who visited the clinics of internal medicine physicians and dermatologists and the clinics and hospitals in Bukan in 2019. Among 30 patients who had the highest score in the short form of DASS-21 Depression, Anxiety and Stress Questionnaire were purposefully selected and then randomly divided into experimental (15) and control groups (15). The protocol of ACT sessions based on Hayes's (2002) approach was administered to the experimental group for eight 1.5 hour sessions in one month, two sessions per week. The data were analyzed by SPSS software using covariance analysis.

Results: The results showed that there was a significant difference between the means of the experimental and control groups in the variables of stress, depression and anxiety. In fact, ACT reduced the mean stress (7.47±1.959), depression (6.47±1.187), and anxiety (6.67±1.345) in the posttest stage.

Conclusion: Considering the efficacy of this type of treatment, this program is deemed to be a good option for therapists who work in counseling centers and psychological clinics.

Abstract

Background and Aim: The purpose of this research was to compare the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral and emotion-focused group therapy on reducing the symptoms of psoriasis, psychological distress and perception of body image.

Methods: This was a semi-experimental research of pretest posttest type with a control group. The statistical population of this research included all patients who were diagnosed with psoriasis in spring of 2022 by referring to dermatologists in Mashhad. 45 psoriasis patients were selected by available sampling method and replaced randomly in two experimental groups (CBT and EFT) and control group (each groups 15). The experimental groups was treated for 8 sessions, one session of 90 minutes per week. The control group received no intervention. Parents completed the Psychological Distress Scale, Body Image Concern Inventory and the Physical Symptoms Questionnaire with Psoriasis Area Severity Index before and after the treatment sessions. The data were analyzed by Analysis of covariance.

Results: The findings showed that cognitive-behavioral and emotion-focused reduced psychological distress (P<0.01, F=21.06), improved perception of body image (P<0.01, F=33.65) and reducing the severity of psoriasis symptoms (P>0.01, F=12.67) are effective. Also, cognitive behavioral therapy is more effective method to reduce psychological distress and improve perception of body image (P<0.01). However, there is no significant difference between the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy and emotion-focused therapy in reducing psoriasis symptoms of patients (P<0.05).

Conclusion: Both therapies can play a key and effective role in controlling the symptoms of psoriasis.
