Abstract

Background and Aim: Alopecia areata is a non-scarring hair disorder. Trace elements imbalance (like zinc) has been reported as its triggering factor. In this study we compared serum zinc level in alopecia areata patients with normal values.
Methods: Twenty-three female and 19 male patients with alopecia areata were recruited and their serum zinc levels were assessed using absorption spectrometery. Chi squared, t and ANOVA tests were used for statistical analysis.
Results: Sixteen patients with more extensive and prolonged disease, had serum zinc level lower than normal (70 µg/dL). The means of serum zinc levels in patients and normal population were 81.88 µg/dL and 83.5 µg/dL, respectively. This difference was not significant (P=0.668). The means of serum zinc level in different types of alopecia areata were not significantly different (P>0.05). There was an association between serum zinc level and disease duration (P=0.022).
Conclusion: Patients with more severe forms of alopecia areata had lower serum zinc level than other forms of the disease.

Abstract

Although ultraviolet rays constitute a small portion of the sunlight, they are destructive on skin. Ultraviolet rays cause sunburn, skin damage and skin cancers. Sunscreens are one of the most widely used cosmetic products which protect skin from cancer or other damages. There are two categories of sunscreen agents: chemical and physical. Physical sunscreens containing zinc oxide work through two mechanisms of reflection and scattering. Physical sunscreens are non-allergenic, non-irritating and non-comedogenic. Currently, by using zinc oxide nanoparticles in sunscreen formulation, both prevention of harmful sun rays and receiving cosmetic benefits are achieved.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Pemphigus vulgaris is a rare autoimmune intraepidermal blistering disease affecting the skin and mucous membranes. Copper and zinc are two necessary trace elements in the human body that have antioxidant activity in the wound healing process. The aim of this study was to determine the serumic level of zinc and copper in newly diagnosed patients with pemphigus vulgaris. Methods: In this study, 50 newly diagnosed patients with pemphigus vulgaris admitted to Razi Hospital in Tehran were studied with regards to their serum levels of copper and zinc alongside age, sex, body mass index (BMI), smoking and drug abuse status. Results: Eighteen percent (9 cases) and 50% (25 cases) of the patients showed copper and zinc deficiency, respectively. There was no significant association between copper and zinc levels and smoking, age, BMI or suffering from a chronic disease (P>0.05). Mean copper levels in women and men were not significantly with their respective different normal levels (P>0.05). Serum zinc level in men was lower than its normal range (P<0.05), but in women was not significantly different from its normal level. Conclusion: Serum concentration of copper and zinc did not show any association with pemphigus disease. Since decreased levels of copper and zinc may result in an increase of oxidative activity in autoimmune diseases enhancing disease severity, therefore conducting a robust case-control study for evaluating the their roles in disease severity may pave the way to treatment of those diseases.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Lesions of the skin can impair its vital function to protect humans against external pathogens. Therefore, producing a suitable wound dressing to repair injuries is always one of the challenges of researchers. The present study aims to Synthesize a hydrogel film for wound dressing applications.

Methods: In this research, a hydrogel film of polyvinyl alcohol / hyaluronic acid / nano zinc oxide was fabricated for application as a wound dressing. For this purpose, three films with different percentages were prepared using the solvent casting method. The synthesized samples were characterized using FTIR, SEM, XRD, and tensile tests. 

Results: Evaluation of the morphology of the samples showed that the increase of zinc oxide nanoparticles led to porosity and growth of their size in the films. It was also characterized that the percentage of film elongation increased with increasing nanoparticles of zinc oxide and hyaluronic acid. The elongation percentage from the lowest amount of nano zinc oxide to the maximum (5, 10 and 15% of weight was 159%, 166%, and 230%, respectively. The MTT study indicated the cell viability above 80% in all three films.

Conclusion: A film containing 15% zinc oxide can be a suitable option for using in tissue engineering and wound dressing.
