Abstract
Polymerization shrinkage of light cure composite resins causes many complications in conservative and esthetic restorations. The objective of this in-vitro study was to evaluate the polymerization shrinkage, degree of conversion and the amount of filler in IDM and tetric ceram composites. Ten disk shaped, uncured specimens (8mm×1.547mm) of each composite were placed on glass slide in the center of the metal attached to it. Then specimens were light cured for 60s from underneath. After 30 minutes, the thickness of specimens, using a micrometer and the percent of the polymerization shrinkage of each sample were measured. Statistical analysis was carried out by t-test (P<0.05). Also the degree of conversion of specimens was evaluated with FTIR and the mineral filler content was measured by burning in electric oven. Polymerization shrinkage in IDM and tetric ceram was not significantly different. Degree of conversion and mineral filler content in tetric ceram was greater than that of IDM.
It is assumed that the low degree of conversion in IDM is due to its chemical composition and filler content. Also, the similarity in linear polymerization shrinkage between IDM and tetric ceram may be caused by the low degree of conversion in IDM.

Abstract
Statement of Problem: Tooth extraction is always considered as the final treatment option in dentistry.Considering the numerous advances in dentistry, nowadays the preservation of the permanent teeth until old age is common. However, in most economically poor countries or those without security service insurance, the high rate of extraction, particularly among restorable teeth, is regrettable.
Purpose: The aim of the present study was to determine the reasons for tooth extraction among patients referred to the faculty of Dentistry, Tehran University of Medical Sciences in 2002.
Materials and Methods: This descriptive and cross-sectional study was conducted on 320 patients. The information about patient's general knowledge, oral health status, tooth location and causes of extraction were collected and recorded in a questionnaire. The data were submitted to statistical Chi-Square test.
Results: No statistically significant difference was found between two genders in their mentioned causes for extraction. The most prevalent reasons were as follows: Caries (50%), Periodontal diseases (16.6%). Absence of an acceptable occlusion, prosthetic problems, patient's request, etc... make up the remaining 33.4% of the reasons.
Conclusion: According to this study, it is suggested to investigate extraction etiology at the society level and if similar results are obtained, necessary steps should be taken to prevent caries and periodontal problems as the major mentioned causes for tooth extraction.

Abstract
Background and Aim: Bleaching products as chemical materials can exert side effects on soft and hard tissues and existing restorative materials with oxidizing mechanism. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of 15% and 35% carbamide peroxide gels as home and in-office bleaching agents respectively, on microhardness and surface topography of composite resin.
Materials and Methods: In this in vitro study, a total of 75 disc shaped specimens were prepared from Z100 composite resin (3M) and randomly divided into three groups with following treatment designs: group 1, 370C distilled water, group 2, 15% carbamide peroxide, 6 hours/day for 3 weeks, group 3, 35% carbamide peroxide 30 minutes/week for 3 weeks. The microhardness (Vickers hardness) of samples was measured using Shimadzu set on three different points of each sample. 8 samples of each group were selected randomly to be assessed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for probable changes in surface topography. Data were analyzed using one way ANOVA and Duncan tests with p<0.05 as the level of significance.
Results: 15% carbamide peroxide group had the maximum amount of microhardness (84.59±1.87) and 35% carbamide peroxide group had the minimum (76. 14±1.77). Only the difference between home bleaching and control group was not statistically significant (P=0.24). The SEM assessing revealed no changes in surface topography.
Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, in-office bleaching may decrease the microhardness of composite resin.

Abstract
Background and Aim: An important criterion for success assessment of implant-supported prostheses is marginal fit. Vertical and horizontal discrepancy can result in loosening of the prosthetic screw, crestal bone resorption, peri-implantitis and loss of osseointegration. Despite careful attention to waxing, investing, and casting, marginal discrepancies are inevitable. The aim of this study was to evaluate the marginal gap and overhang in three casting methods with two different alloys in ITI implants.
Materials and Methods: In this experimental in vitro study 48 analog abutments were randomly divided into six groups as follows: 1) burn out cap + BegoStar, 2) impression cap + BegoStar, 3) conventional wax up + BegoStar, 4) burn out cap + Verabond2, 5) impression cap + Verabond2, 6) conventional wax up + Verabond2. Waxing was done in 0.7 mm thickness verified by a digital gauge and a putty index was made for all groups. Reamer was used for correction of the finish line after casting in all groups. Castings were seated on analog abutments and embedded in acrylic resin. Specimens were sectioned by isomet instrument and polished and cleaned by ultrasonic cleaner for 10 min. The marginal gap and overextended margins of castings were examined under a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) (X200). The mean gap and margin overextension were calculated for each group. Data were analyzed by multivariate analysis and Bonferroni post-hoc test with p<0.05 as the level of significance.
Results: No significant difference in gap size was observed among the three casting methods with two alloys (P=0.056). The marginal gap was not different in the studied casting methods (P=0.092). Gold alloy crowns showed lower marginal gaps compared to base metal alloy crowns (P<0.001). No significant difference in overhang size was observed among casting methods with two alloys (P=0.093). Base metal alloy crowns showed less overhang compared to gold alloy crowns (P<0.001). There was a significant correlation between overhang and use of impression cap in base metal alloys (P<0.001).
Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, vertical discrepancy of frameworks made with gold alloy were less than those made with base metal alloy. Base metal alloy demonstrated less overhang. Conventional wax up or using burn out caps produced less horizontal discrepancy.

Abstract
Background and Aims: Cephalometric measurements cannot be performed for screening purposes, therefore orthodontists usually have to use either photographic or anthropometric measurements in such occasions. Finding a valid and reliable alternative could be of great value. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the correlation between McNamara's cephalometric unit difference and a proposed soft tissue equivalent.
Materials and Methods: An anthropometric ruler was redesigned and used in this study. Soft tissue measurements were performed on 36 randomly selected specimens by two investigators. The soft tissue measurements included external auditory meatus to subnasale (Ext-Sn), external auditory meatus to soft tissue pogonion (Ext-Pog), and the difference between them (UDMA´). These measurements were considered as equivalents to cephalometric indices in McNamara's anteroposterior measurements, including maxillary (Co-A) and mandibular (Co-Gn) unit length and their difference (UDMA), respectively.
Results: All soft tissue variables had an intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) above 0.90. There was a high and significant correlation between cephalometric and anthropometric measurements (P<0.01). The ICC between (Ext-Sn) and (Co-A) was 0.890, 0.869 between (Ext-Pog) and (Co-Gn), and 0.819 between UDMA´ and UDMA.
Conclusion: The proposed anthropometric method showed a good correlation with cephalometric equivalents and the results show that this method could be used for screening purposes, especially when a low-cost, non-invasive method is required. However it cannot be considered as a substitute for cephalometry in diagnostic and treatment purposes.

Abstract
Background and Aims: Considering the preventive and therapeutic effects of resin infiltration (RI) and the unknown effect of bleaching on the enamel treated with this method, this in-vitro study aimed to assess the effect of bleaching on color stability of enamel lesions treated with RI.
Materials and Methods: In this in-vitro, experimental study, enamel-dentin samples measuring 5×5×3 mm were prepared on the buccal and lingual surfaces of 30 extracted humans third molars with no caries, cracks or enamel defects by a microtome. The specimens were divided into three groups of 10 specimens: 1) sound enamel (control), 2) demineralized enamel, 3) demineralized enamel plus RI. White spot lesions were artificially created by immersing the samples in hydroxyethyl cellulose demineralizing gel with a pH of 4.5 for 4 days. Next, Icon RI was applied on the samples in group 3. The baseline color of the specimens was measured using a spectrophotometer. Then, 35% hydrogen peroxide was applied on the specimens in three cycles and time interval of 10 min. After the end of the last cycle, the samples were completely washed for 1 min and then, underwent colorimetry again. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA.
Results: The results of this study showed that the highest level of color change (ΔE) in the demineralized group was 6.3±2.003, while the least amount of ΔE in the enamel lesion group treated with resin infiltration was 3.54±0.98 and in the control group ΔE was 4.13±1.14. Therefore, there was a significant difference between demineralized and treated by infiltratant groups (P=0.005). However, there was no significant difference between control group and treated with resin infiltration group (P=0.54).
Conclusion: Bleaching induced a less change in the color of the enamel lesions treated by resin infiltration compared with that of the demineralized teeth.
