Abstract
The root trunk (RT) of molar teeth is important diagnostic parameter that has a key roll in diagnosis and treatment planning. The purpose of this study is presenting a normal index of RT in mandibular molar teeth in different buccal (B). distal (D), Lingual (Li) and mesial (M) entrances, and to compare them with each other. It is a case series study that 351 extracted molar teeth, after removal of soft tissue and debridement of calculus, evaluated with gauge (with accuracy 0.1 mm) According to our measurement:In maxilla: M-side: 3.88± 0.15 mm, B-side: 4.7± 1.7. D- side: 4.87± 0.13mm. So with P.value <0.05 M and D RT are longer than and M RT is shorter than D RT.In mandibule: B- side: 2.73± 0.11mm and L side: 4.03±- 0.13mm. So with P.value < 0.01 Li RT is longer than B RT.According to ochsenbine classification our studying teeth have medium to long RT. We prescribe for educating the crater therapy in periodontal surgery the emphasize must be focused on craters with medium and long RT.The shortness of RT in B-side of lower molars needed the most attention during osteoctomy in resective procedures. Because RT not depended to underlying factors such as age, social and economic situation, and for large amount of sample size in our study, the result could be extended in Tehran.

Abstract
Statement of Problem: The relatively poor wear resistance of dental composite in stress bearing posterior situations has restricted wider clinical application of this restorative material.
Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the three body abrasive wear of a dental composite based on a new filler (leucite: KAl Si2O6) and to compare it with the wear resistance of a composite based on commonly used Aluminium – Barium Silicate filler.
Materials and Methods: This research was an interventional study done in Iran polymer institute. Five specimens were considered in each group. All ceramic IPS Empress® (Ivoclar- Vivadent) ingots based on leucite crystals were ball milled, passed through an 800 sieve and used as filler. Experimental composites were prepared by mixing the silane- treated fillers with monomers (BisGMA and TEGDMA). Camphorquinone and amine were used as photoinitiator system. Degree of conversion of the light-cured and post-cured composites was measured using FTIR spectroscopy. The prepared pastes were inserted into plexy-glass mold and light cured (700 mw/cm2, 40 s). Then for maximum degree of conversion specimens were post- cured (120ºC, 5 hours). Three body abrasion wear testing was performed using a wear machine with 50 rpm rotational movement. In this machine, pumice (150 meshes) was used as the third body. Weight loss of specimens in each group was measured by balance after each 50 hours. After wear testing SEM examination was made specimens in each group. The data were analyzed and compared using ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests (P<0.05). Tetric Ceram was tested as commercial composite.
Results: There were significantly differences between three body abrasive wear of composites. The ranking from lowest to highest was as follows: leucite composite (19%) < Tetric Ceram (22%) < glass composite (28%). leucite composite showed the highest wear resistance value, propably due to the crystalliniy and hardness of filler.
Conclusion: Introduction of this new filler as an alternative to glass filler, significantly increases the wear resistance of the resin composites. Further investigations on mechanical properties of new composites would be beneficial in the development of new dental materials.

Abstract
Background and Aim: Determining correct working length in root canal therapy is of great importance in successful treatment. The purpose of this study was to compare the accuracy of two electronic apex locators of fourth generation, Raypex4 and Apit7, in determining working length in vivo.
Materials and Methods: In this test evaluation study performed at Dental School of Tehran University, a total of 32 single canal vital teeth planned for extraction because of orthodontic and prosthetic reasons were selected. Working length determination by each of the two electronic apex locators was performed by two different dentists. These measurements were compared with direct visual measurement after tooth extraction. The dentists working with devices and the endodontist who determined the working length of the extracted teeth as well as the statistician, all were blind regarding the results. The data were compared using binominal distribution test with P<0.05 as the limit of significance.
Results: The accuracy of actual length determination of Raypex4 was 68.8% in the limit of ± 0.5 and 83.3% in the limit of ±1. From the actual length measurements, 75.1% were within the tolerance of +0.5 to-1. The accuracy of the working length determination by Raypex4 was 68.8% within the tolerance of ± 0.5 and 84.3% within the tolerance of ± 1. Taking the tolerance of + 0.5 to -1 mm into account, the accuracy of the instrument was about 78.8%. The accuracy of actual length determination of Apit7 was 65.7% in the limit of ±0.5 and 78.3% in the limit of ±1. Compared to the visual length determination, 78.8% of the actual length measurements were within the tolerance of +0.5 to-1. The accuracy of the working length determination was 62.6% within the tolerance of ±0.5 and 81.3% within the tolerance of ±1. Taking the tolerance of + 0.5 to -1 mm into account, the accuracy of the instrument was about 75.1%.
Conclusion: Raypex4 and Apit7 had similar accuracy in determining the actual length. However, they still can not replace the routine methods of actual length determination.

Abstract
Background and Aims: In 1978 WHO (World health organization) formulated a histopathological definition for diagnosis of OLP (oral lichen planus). Previous studies showed that diagnosis of OLP with these criteria are not reproducible. In 2003 Van der Meij et al. represented new clinical and histopathologic definition for diagnosis of OLP known as modified WHO criteria. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the interobserver and intraobserver variability in the histopathological assessment of OLP based on the modified WHO criteria.
Materials and Methods: Fifty five microscopic slides which OLP and OLL (Oral Lichenoid Lesion) were recognized in their clinical differential diagnosis were given to 6 pathologists in two phases with 3 months interval. Each reviewing pathologist was asked to apply the modified WHO definition of OLP and to categorize each case as either OLP, or compatible with OLP. Then, the interobserver and intraobserver variability were assessed by calculation of repeatability coefficient and Kappa statistics.
Results: The results of this study demonstrated that interobserver variability based on modified WHO criteria was 0.77 (strong), while the intraobserver variability varied from 0.58 (moderate) to 0.82 (strong).
Conclusion: In the present study, the interobserver and intraobserver variability in the histopathologic assessment of OLP based on modified WHO criteria was stronger than previous studies which assessed WHO criteria. However, in order to propose the replacement of WHO criteria with modified WHO criteria, further studies with more cases and comparing the two methods is required.

Abstract
Background and Aims: Candida is an opportunistic pathogen that causes illness in people with a defective or weakened condition. Infectious diseases (periodontal diseases) are inflammatory and malignant inflammation of the dental-gum complex, in which the growth of biofilms caused by Candida glabrata, Parapseilosis and Tropikalis is less than Candida albicans. Brown algae Sargasum is more compatible with human medicines due to having a natural origin than chemical drugs and has less side effects. The aim of the present study was to investigate the molecular characteristics of Candida species isolated from periodontal infections and the effect of Sargassum glaucescens extract on biofilm gene expression using Real-Time-PCR.
Materials and Methods: Oral samples of periodontal infection were collected from the referred patients. To isolate the candidate species, the specimens were cultured on a Sabouraud dextrose agar containing chloramphenicol (SDAc). The extracted DNA was extracted from colonies grown from Kit and Glass pearl. Grown chickens were identified by specific primers by PCR-RFLP method. In order to detect the expression of als genes in Candida isolates, RNA extraction was performed using Phenol-Chloroform and Pearl glass, and the CLSI-M27-A2 method was used to evaluate the effect of Sargasum glaucescens extract of algae.
Results: The results showed that the expression of als gene in periodontal infection is higher than other genes. Another role is als in the formation of Candida albicans biofilm. The minimum inhibitory concentration of fungal growth was 256 μg/ml by algae extract. Sargasum glaucescens reduced the expression of als gene expression by about 62% in the sample.
Conclusion: Sargasum glaucescens algae possesses specific pharmacological properties and antimicrobial and antimicrobial effects. The results of the study using Real Time PCR showed that expression of als gene in isolated studied with Sargasum algae extract was lower than untreated isolates. Thus, this indicated the positive role of treatment by sargasum glaucescens extract in reducing the expression of biofilm gene in isolates.

Abstract
Background and Aims: Periodontitis is a common and inflammatory infectious disease that causes damage to the tissues supporting the tooth and consequent tooth loss. Periodontal disease is a multimicrobial and multifactorial disease and important anaerobic bacteria are involved in periodontal infection. TGF-1β is one of the growth factors and anti-inflammatory cytokines that play a crucial role in the repair of periodontal lesions. The aim of this study was to evaluate Tetra Arms-PCR with high sensitivity and specificity, which can be used to evaluate the genomic polymorphism among oral samples and show the relationship between TGF-1β and periodontal disease.
Materials and Methods: The present study was a case-control study in the periodontology department of Kerman Dental School. Sampling was done from 100 samples including 50 healthy individuals and 50 patients with microbial periodontal infection. Genotype was analyzed using DNA extracted from the blood of patients by PCR -ARMs-Tetra to determine the relationship between TGF-1β genomic polymorphism and periodontitis. Statistical analysis was performed with SPSS19 software and one-way ANOVA.
Results: The samples were culture positive, therefore, more than 65% of the isolated bacteria were anaerobic which included: Prevotella, Porphyromonas, Fusobacterium, Peptostreptococcus anaerobic. The results of Tetra PCR ARMs after sequence frequency were genotype CC allele (25%), CT allele (20%), TT allele (5%). Percentage of control group were CC allele (20%), CT allele (24%), and TT allele (6%). The frequency of C and T alleles in the patient group was 70% and 30%, and in the control group 63% and 37%, respectively with no significant difference between two groups (P=0.83). |
Conclusion: According to the results of this study and the application of anaerobic conditions, forced anaerobic bacteria can be isolated from clinical specimens of oral infections and by Tetra Arms-PCR no significant relationship between TGF-1β genomic polymorphism and periodontitis was observed. In addition, therer was no significant difference in the frequency of alleles and genotypes between the control and patient groups.
