Abstract

Background and Aims: High level of caries was reported in pre-school children at the national level. Due to importance of focusing on high-risk children, this study was carried out to evaluate an oral health promotion program designed for Ameneh orphan center.

Materials and Methods: Two centers were chosen and assigned to intervention (Ameneh orphan center) and comparison (Shobeir orphan center). Dental examination has been carried out using dental mirror and blunt probe under artificial light and dmfs index was recorded. Health promotion program including topical fluoride application after dental treatment as well as power point education session for caregivers was delivered in intervention group. Children in the other center were only received routine dental treatment. Data were analyzed using Mann-Whitney and regression tests.

Results: 79 children in the intervention group and 51 children in comparison group were evaluated in the study. The mean age of children in the intervention group was 4.7 (SD=1.6) and in the comparison group was 4.6 (SD=1.2). The dmfs index in the intervention and comparison groups was 6.86±10.23 and 8.75±12.42 (NS), respectively. The mean dmfs after intervention in the intervention group was 7.93±11.21 and in the control group was 9.88±12.51, which showed no significant difference (P>0.05). Comparison in subgroups showed that the mean dmfs in the group received fluoride varnish in addition to complete dental treatment was significantly less than the comparison group (P<0.05). Controlling the effect of baseline caries and age on the outcome variable with regression analysis showed that the effect of baseline caries should be considered when comparing two groups.

Conclusion: Oral health promotion programs including topical fluoride application can be used in high-risk groups of children.

Abstract

Background and Aims: In endodontically treated teeth, the fiber posts are used to retain a core restoration. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of different resin cements on the bond strength of fiber reinforced composite posts to root canal dentin, and comparing the bond strength in different sections of root.
Materials and Methods: In this in-vitro experimental study, 48 extracted single-canal central incisors were endodontically treated. For the push out test, the posts were divided into 3 groups according to one of the following three different cement materials (n=16) (Bifix SE, Bifix QM, Rebilda). Three slices with a thickness of 2-mm were prepared of each root. The push-out tests were performed at a cross-head speed of 1 mm/minute using a universal testing machine. Data were analyzed by two-way and one-way ANOVA test followed by Tukey post hoc test (α=0.05).
Results: There was no significant differences between the mean push out bond strength of three experimental groups (P=0.650), but there were significant differences between the mean push out bond strength of root dentin regions (P<0.001).
Conclusion: Under the conditions of this study, there was no significant difference between the mean push out bond strength of 3 different resin cement systems. The coronal region of root dentin showed significantly higher mean bond strength values than that of the middle and apical thirds.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Periapical diseases are the end result of untreated pulpitis and necrotic dental pulp. The aim of this study was to determine and compare the prevalence of radicular cysts and periapical granulomas in young adults and old patients referred to Oral Pathology department of Isfahan dental school.
Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, all recorded samples with a diagnosis of radicular cyst and periapical granuloma were considered by the census method in a 14-year period from 2006 to 2019 in the archives of the Oral Pathology Department of Isfahan dental school. The data were extracted including age, gender, location of the lesion and histopathologicaldiagnosis.
The prevalence of cases in terms of age range was classified into two groups of young adults (20-35 years) and older (over 50 years). Then, Chi-square test and t test were done using SPSS24 and P<0.05 was considered significant.
Results: The results showed that 49.4% (430 cases) of lesions were observed in males and 50.5% (439 cases) in females. Of all lesions, 51% (444 samples) were periapical granulomas and 49% (426 samples) were radicular cysts. Chi square test showed a significant difference between the prevalence distribution of the two lesions based on gender. Radicluar cysts were more prevalent in males and periapical granulomas were more prevalent in females (P<0.001). According to t-test, there was no significant difference between the mean age of patients based on gender (P=0.176). The prevalence of lesions in the third and fourth decades of life was higher than in other decades. Also, in the third and eighth decades, the prevalence of periapical granulomas was higher than radicular cysts.
Conclusion: The prevalence of periapical cysts and dental granulomas were higher in young adults than in elderly patients.
