Abstract

Statement of Problem: There are different tooth brushing methods for removing dental plaque from tooth surfaces. The effectiveness of these methods, and the time needed for instruction, learning and using seem to be different. Also, it is possible that the effectiveness of each method reduces with time, based on its difficulty level and the reduction of the patient s attention in following the given instructions. Purpose: The aim of this research was to compare the effectiveness of six different accepted tooth brushing methods on total and specific teeth, as well as on special tooth surfaces. The research also compared the time needed for instruction, learning and using the methods. Materials and Methods: The study was designed as a single blind randomised controlled trial protocol to compare the six accepted tooth brushing methods: Roll, Bass, Charters (C), Modified Stillman (MS), and Modified Bass in two ways (MB1-MB2). 15 volunteers were selected from the basic science level dental students at Tehran University of Medical Sciences. All the six methods were instructed to each volunteer, using a randomly selected sequence. Each participant should, therefore, pass six consequent courses, by the same sequences as follow: 1st Visit: After polishing the teeth, the participant was asked to abstain any kind of tooth cleaning. - 2nd visit (48-72 hours later): O Leary Plaque Index (PI) was recorded and then the randomised selected method was instructed. Then, the participant brushed his/her teeth and PI was registered again. The time needed for instruction and using the method was registered too. The participant was then asked to use this newly learned tooth brushing method twice a day for 7±1 days. - 3rd visit (7±1 days later): PI was recorded. The teeth were polished. The participant was asked to abstain any kind of tooth cleaning for 48-72 hours, as washout period of the previous method and preparation period for the next method (2nd visit of the next course). The final stage was comparing the results, in which the effectiveness of each method was evaluated based on the mean percentage of plaque reduction after the first usage, and also the mean percentage of the plaque remained after using the method for 7±1 days. The time needed for instruction, learning and using the methods were also compared. The statistical analysis was done using the SPSS software and variance analysis (randomised block design).

Results: Considering all the teeth and their total surfaces after 1st usage, the methods of C and MB1 were statistically more effective than the other methods. But the difference between these two methods was not significant. Also after 7±1 days, the differences between all methods were not statistically significant. On the posterior teeth, after 1st usage and also after 7±1 days, the method of C was significantly more effective than the others, with the exception of MB1 for which their differences were not significant. Also MB1 was significantly more effective than the methods of Bass and Roll, but only after the 1st usage. On the anterior teeth, after 1st usage, method of C was statistically more effective than the methods of Bass, MB2 and MS. Also MB1 was significantly more effective than MB2 and MS. But after 7±1 days, the differences proved insignificant. Considering the specific surfaces of the teeth on the proximal surfaces, after the 1st usage of the methods, the methods of C and MB1was significantly more effective than the others, except each other, which their difference was not significant. But after 7±1days the method of C was statistically more effective only than the methods of Bass, MB2 and MS, and the method of MB1was significantly more effective than MB2. On the buccal and lingual surfaces the differences were not statistically significant at both stage of evaluation. When statistically considering the time needed for instruction, learning and usage, the method of C needed more time than Bass and Roll methods. In the same way, MB1 needed more time than Roll method. The most time needed was related to MB2 which was more than the time needed for the methods of Bass, Roll and MS (P<0.001 and α=0.05).

Conclusion: The tooth brushing methods of Charters’ and a kind of Modified Bass method (in which Bass and Roll methods are used separately and consequently) were evaluated as the most effective methods.

Abstract

Statement of Problem: One of the greatest problems in metal –ceramic restorations is debonding of porcelain from dental alloys. Production of dental alloys by Iranian companies necessitates the evaluation of physical and handling properties of these products.

Purpose: In this study the bond strength between porcelain and two types of base metal alloys, Supercast (with beryllium) and Minalux (without beryllium) was investigated.

Materials and Methods: In this experimental study 10 cylindric bars from each base metal alloy were prepared. The bars were degassed and porcelain was applied around them in a disc form (8 mm diameter and 2 mm thickness). The bond strength of porcelain to metal bars was tested with the shear strength test by Instron. Data were analyzed with student t-test and P<0.05 was considered as the limit of significance.

Results: The mean failure load was 71.58±6.4 KgF for Supercast and 67.34±5.48 for Minalux alloy. The bond strength of Supercast and Minalux were 55.85±4.99 MPa and 52.54±4.27 MPa respectively. The difference was statistically significant (P0.001).

Conclusions: This study showed that nickel-chromium-beryllium alloy (Supercast) produced significantly better ceramometal bonding than nickel chromium alloy without beryllium (Minalux).

Abstract

Background and Aim: Although toothbrushing is still the most effective method in plaque reduction, it is insufficient for total plaque removal. Considering this limitation, it is suggested that toothbrushing could be aided by chemical methods. For this purpose, it is advised to use some kind of mouthrinses before toothbrushing to increase the rate of microbial plaque removal. Several prebrushing mouthrinses are available in the market and comparing their efficiency is valuable for dentists. The aim of this study was to investigate and compare the effect of two prebrushing mouthrinses, Plax and Irsha, on dental plaque reduction.

Materials and Methods: This clinical trial was carried out as an interventional and triple blind protocol, using completely random block design. For this purpose, questionnaire and initial examination chart was filled for 50 healthy volunteers between the age of 18 and 40 years and finally 30 individuals were selected based on the inclusion/exclusion criteria. If scaling and polishing was necessary, it was performed at least 2 weeks before starting the main program. Then, each volunteer participated in a 4 steps program, including one step toothbrushing without use of mouthrinse and three steps toothbrushing after use of one of the mouthrinses (Plax, Irsha, Placebo). Data were analyzed by SPSS software using factorial analysis, ANOVA and Tukey’s multiple comparison tests with p<0.05 as the limit of significance.

Results: Toothbrushing without use of mouthrinse decreased the amount of plaque, significantly (P<0.0001). Use of mouthrinse without toothbrushing decreased the amount of plaque significantly (P<0.0001). The amount of plaque reduction after use of various mouthrinses (Plax, Irsha, Placebo) showed no statistical differences (P=0.761). Use of the mouthrinses before toothbrushing, had no statistically significant effect on the final results after toothbrushing (P=0.331).

Conclusion: According to the findings of the present study, although using mouthrinses decrease the amount of dental plaque significantly, but the prebrushing mouthrinse didn't show statistically significant effect on final result after toothbrushing.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Formocresol (FC) has been a popular pulpotomy medicament for primary dentition in recent decades. Concerns have been raised about the toxicity and potential carcinogenicity of FC, and alternatives have been proposed. Recently, the physical and biological properties of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) have been described in many studies. The aim of this study was to compare the success rate of pulpotomy with MTA (made in Iran) and FC in primary molars.
Materials and Methods: In this clinical trial, 30 primary molars needing pulpotomy treatment were selected and randomly divided into two groups: (15 teeth in FC and 15 in MTA group). The teeth were then pulpotomized and restored. Clinical and radiographic results were recorded at 1-3-6-9 and 12 months and success rates of two groups were compared using Fisher’s exact test with p<0.05 as the level of significance.
Results: After 12 months, there was no statistical significant difference between MTA group (85.8%) and FC group (93.3%) (P 1.0). The only observed radiographic failure was internal resorption.
Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, MTA can be used as an alternative to formocresol in primary teeth pulpotomy.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Considering advantages and disadvantages of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), Calcium Enriched Mixture (CEM) cement has been developed recently. The purpose of this study was to compare the apical microleakage of the root-end cavities prepared by ultrasonic or Er,Cr:YSGG laser and filled with MTA or CEM cement.

Materials and Methods: Eighty single-rooted, extracted human teeth were instrumented and obturated. Root-end resection was made by removing 3 mm of the apex. The teeth were randomly divided into two experimental (n=30) and two positive and negative control (n=10) groups. After that, the retrograde cavities were prepared using ultrasonic or Er,Cr: YSGG Laser. According to the root-end filling materials (MTA or CEM cement), each group was then divided into two subgroups. Finally, specimens were cleared for assessing the amount of apical dye (Indian ink) penetration. The data were analyzed using Kruskall-Wallis and Dunn tests.

Results: Laser/CEM cement group showed significantly the lowest mean apical dye penetration. There were no statistically significant differences between Laser/MTA, ultrasonic/MTA and ultrasonic/CEM cement groups.

Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, CEM cement demonstrated lower rate of apical leakage compared with MTA, when the root-end cavities prepared with Er,Cr:YSGG Laser. The sealing ability of MTA was not different following root-end preparation by ultrasonic or Er,Cr:YSGG Laser.

Abstract

Background and Aims: The present study was designed for evaluation of bovine demineralized bone matrix (DBM) in healing process of bone defects and comparison of bovine DBM (xenograft) and human DBM (allograft) which is used clinically.

Materials and Methods: Seven male white New Zealand rabbits were used in this study. The incision was made directly over the midsagital suture of the parietal bone. Then 3 bicortical defects were created with trephine bur No.8 (8mm diameter). The defects were randomly filled with graft materials. One of the defects was left without any graft in all samples (as a control defect). The amount of bone formation was evaluated 3 months after surgery histopathologically. The data were analyzed using Friedman test, and when P-value was less than 0.05, the pair wise group comparison were performed by Wilcoxon (Boneferroni adjusted) test.

Results: Statistical analysis showed that there was a significant difference between bovine DBM group with control group (P=0.03). Furthermore, human DBM group was significantly different from control group (P=0.02). However, the difference between bovine DBM group and human DBM group was not statistically significant (P=0.87).

Conclusion: The results of this study showed the satisfactory bone healing in rabbit parietal bone defects filled with bovine DBM. The amount of healing in these defects was similar to bone defects which were filled with human DBM that is used clinically.

Abstract

  Background and Aims : Free gingival graft is one of the most predictable procedures for gingival augmentation, but patient’s discomfort and pain during healing period of palatal donor site is a significant concern. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of 660nm low power laser on pain and healing in palatal donor sites.

  Materials and Methods: The present split mouth randomized controlled clinical trial was performed in 12 patients at the department of periodontics of Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Patients’ allocation was done by balanced block randomization (laser group and placebo group). In laser test group (wave length: 660 nm, power: 200mW, time of irradiation: 32s) was applied immediately post-surgery and in day 1, 2, 4 and 7 after that. In the control group, laser application was done with off power mode. Evaluation of epithelialization and healing was done with H2O2 and photograph. The number of palliative pills and bleeding was recorded. Wilcoxon test was used to analyze healing during the study. Patient’s pain during study was analyzed using repeated measure ANOVA. Mc Nemar test was used to analyze bleeding. Level of statistical significance was set at 0.05.

  Results: Laser group showed better epithelialization (P=0.02) and healing (P=0.01) in day 14 after surgery and showed better epithelialization in day 21(P=0.05). No statistically differences were observed between laser group and control group in terms of bleeding and medication (P=0.51), (P=1).

  Conclusion: According to the results of this study, the low power laser can promote palatal wound healing during the second and third week after free gingival graft procedures.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Nowadays lasers are used as alternatives to the tooth preparation because of reducing pain and bloodshed. The aim of this study was to observe the effect of ArF laser on the dental hard tissues.

Materials and Methods: For this research human molar teeth with no caries or dental restoration and enamel cracks were used. Irradiation laser energies were taken 95, 70 and 50 mJ for enamel and 80, 70 and 50 mJ for dentine. Then, for each of energy values pulse numbers (repetition rate) were adjusted at 200, 400, 600, 800, 1000 and 1500. Ablation was carried out without water spray on both enamel and dentine. Finally, the dimensions of ablated areas were measured by using a camera connected to the computer and results were applied in graphs.

Results: For each energy value, the ablation dimension increased by increasing pulse numbers. Ablation depth in dentine was more than that of for enamel. Trends of graphs for dentine and enamel were the same. SEM images of ablations by 95 mJ energy on enamel and 80 mJ energy on dentine showed sharp edges.

Conclusion: Ablation depths increased by increasing pulse numbers, for each energy level. However, this increase was not that as expected, because the lack of water spray while irradiating.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Nowadays lasers are used as alternatives to the tooth preparation because of reducing pain, bloodshed and stress. The aim of this study was to observe the effect of Er,Cr:YSGG laser on the dental hard tissues.

Materials and Methods: For this studty, molar teeth with no caries or dental restoration and enamel cracks were used. The laser power were taken from 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, 4.5, 5, 5.5 up to 6 Watts for enamel and 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5 and 4 Watts for dentine simultaneously with water spray. The ablation effect was observed on both enamel and dentine. Finally, by use of a CCD camera connected to the computer, the dimensions of ablated areas were measured and results were applied in graphs.

Results: Volume of ablation was increased by increasing laser power. Also, by increasing energy value in each stage, the depth of ablation was increased for enamel and dentine. SEM images of ablations by 3.5 and 4 Watts on enamel and 1 and 1.5 Watts on dentine did not show any sharp edges.

Conclusion: The ablation volumes and depth increased by increasing the energy of laser pulses power. The reason for this trend was due to the water spray while irradiating and good absorption of water by laser beam.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Constant dynamic and static activities are considered as the main cause of musculoskeletal problems among dentists. The aim of this study was to evaluate the musculoskeletal problems and related factors among dentists in specialized clinics and dental schools in Tehran in 2014 using the REBA method.

Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, the dentists from clinics of dental schools in Tehran were selected as individual targets. Nordic anddemopghrphic questionnaire were completed through interview from dentists. In order to assess the musculoskeletal disorders, REBA method (Rapid Entire Body Assessment) was used. In this method, positions and postures of the dentists during their work was observed and recorded. Data was analyzed using Regression Logestic test.

Results: The obtained results showed that among 100 dentist, 6% were in the very high risk (15-11) for musculoskeletal problems and 17% and 25% were in high-risk (10-8) and average risk (7-4), respectively. Based on the findings from Nordic questionnaire, the most skeletal- muscle travail were related to the neck (60%), lumbar (58%) and rear (46%) consequently. It seemed that factors such as gender, body mass index (BMI), height, specialty, body posture during the work (standing or sitting), smoking and using the direct or indirect vision, had an impact on the musculoskeletal disorders.

Conclusion: Findings from the final scoring of REBA showed that a high percentage of dentists were struggling with skeletal- muscle problems and they were in moderate to high range of risk for these type of disorders.

Abstract

Background and Aims: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the mandible anatomy with age and gender in panoramic radiography of patients.

Materials and Methods: In this descriptive-sectional study, 322 panoramic radiography of patients at the age of 25-55 years old were evaluated. The patients were devided in three groups of 25-34, 35-44, 45-55 years old and the radiomorphometric indexes in panoramic radiography of the patients were measured. The collecting data were analyzed using independent two-sample t-test, one-way anova and multiple linear regression using SPSS statistical software (version 18).

Results: The average of radiomorphometric indexes don’t show a meaningfull statistical defference between different age groups. The average of all angles higher in females than that of males and other measured indexes were higher in males than females. Also, the mandibular foramen moved forward with the increase of age.

Conclusion: Based on the result of this study which was done on limited numbers, it can be concluded that the measured radiomorphometric indexes in this study didn’t have a high accuracy to predict Age and Gender.

Abstract


Management of internal root resorption is a challenge to the endodontists. If it is left untreated, it may lead to the destruction of the surrounding dental hard tissues. Despite, routine obturation techniques are often employed without considering the best technique to solve this problem. This study presented a case of internal root resorption and apical periodontitis affecting tooth 12 (FDI) in a 31-year-old female patient, with a history of crown preparation in that region. We managed it with EndosealMTA and gutta-percha. After 12 months follow up, the tooth was still symptomless and in function and healing of bone resorption occurred.

Abstract


Background and Aims: Saliva is the first body fluid that is exposed to the free radicals found in cigarette smoke. Antioxidant substances in saliva, such as vitamin C, play an important role in the defense mechanism against free radicals. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the effect of vitamin C on the total antioxidant capacity of saliva in smokers.
Materials and Methods: This randomized clinical trial was performed on 60 healthy male smokers who referred to the dental clinic in Rafsanjan in 2017. Individuals were randomly divided into three groups. The first and second groups received 500 and 1000 mg of vitamin C boiling tablets for three weeks. The third group did not receive any vitamin C supplements. The total antioxidant capacity of saliva was measured using an antioxidant kit and an ELISA reader. Data were analyzed using paired t-test, one-way ANOVA, and Duncan's multiple comparisons test.
Results: The results showed that the mean total antioxidant capacity of saliva after the intervention was found statistically significant among groups (P<0.001). However, the mean total antioxidant capacity of saliva did not differ in the groups receiving 500 and 1000 mg of vitamin C (P=0.420).
Conclusion: The results showed that taking vitamin C increased the total antioxidant capacity of saliva in smokers.

Abstract

Background and Aims: The self-adhering composites were introduced to reduce the chair time and minimizing handling errors. They can be bonded micromechanically to the dental structure without the need for separate adhesive application. Since there is limited information about bonding performance of this type of composite, the aim of this study was to evaluate the microleakage of enamel and dentin margins compared to the conventional adhesive systems.
Materials and Methods: 30 intact premolars were selected and on their buccal and lingual surfaces, standardized class V cavities with the occlusal margin in enamel and gingival margin in dentin were prepared. Then according to the materials used, the specimens were randomly divided into three groups including: 1) Vertise flow, 2) SE bond + ValuxTM Plus, and 3) Single bond + ValuxTM Plus. After final polishing of the restorations, the specimens were subjected to 1000 thermal cycles of 5±2 and 55±2°C and after that dye penetration was examined by stereomicroscope. The collected data were statistically analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney test
Results: The lowest rate of the occlosal microleakage was related to group 2 (P<0.05) and there was no significant difference between groups 1and 3 (P=0.58). Also, no significant difference was found in the gingival microleakage among the three groups (P=0.23). On the other hand, in each group, the gingival microleakage was significantly higher than occlosal margins (P<0.05).
Conclusion: According to the results, sealing ability of self-adhering composite is comparable with that of the conventional adhesives.

Abstract

Background and Aims: The objective of this study was to evaluate the knowledge, attitude, and practice of ergonomics during dental treatment among students of Urmia university of medical sciences in 2020.
Materials and Methods: In this descriptive-analytical study, self-administered questionnaires were given to 78 dental students of Urmia University in 2020 and the knowledge, attitude, and practice of every participant were evaluated. Demographic data including sex, age, and University grade were recorded as well. Data were analyzed by SPSS software24 with One Way ANOVA and t-test and the significance level of P<0.05.
Results: 78 students (44 males and 34 female) by Mean Age 23.9±2.12 were included in the study. The difference between the attitudes of different age groups was significant (P=0.006). The age group of 20 to 24 years had a more positive attitude than other age groups. However, the results of this study did not show a significant r elationship between the participants' knowledge and practice with their age (P>0.05).
Conclusion: According to this study, the knowledge, attitude and practice of Urmia dental students were in the desired range. 20-24 year students had significantly higher attitude in comparison to others. Therefore, more endeavors should be taken to improve these parameters in ergonomics.

Abstract

Background and Aims: The aim of this study was development and validation of a questionnaire measuring the pseudo-scientific unsupported of Iranians’ belief regarding oral health.
Materials and Methods: A list of 169 pseudo-scientific and invalid Iranian beliefs about oral health that was collected in the previous phase of the study were sent to a purposive sample of 13 professors at Mashhad dental school which resulted in extracting 34 beliefs being considered more common among Iranians. A list of 21 pseudo-scientific beliefs was obtained for preparing the questionnaire after receiving the sample opinions of 21 professors of Mashhad dental school about the invalidity and pseudoscientific propositions and their written revision. Finally, the questionnaire was completed by 44 participants to analyze the ease and clarity and to calculate Cronbach's alpha and Kuder Richardson measure as a homogeneity reliability index. It was completed in a group of 15 participants with a time interval of one month for test-retest analysis and consistency reliability evaluation.
Results: A questionnaire consisting of 21 beliefs was developed using four-point, three-point, or two-point Likert scales. The standardized Cronbach's alpha score and Kuder Richardson's measure score were 0.641 and 0.514, respectively, which indicated the moderate to good reliability of the homogeneity. The Interclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC) was calculated as 0.863, representing very good reliability of consistency of the questionnaire. Furthermore, the kappa coefficient of each of the 21 statements had a significant difference with zero (P<0.05) ranging between 0.605 and 1.
Conclusion: The result of the present study is a questionnaire measuring the level of Iranians’ belief in unsupported and invalid statements about oral health. Using this questionnaire would be helpful for dentists and oral health professionals to promote knowledge of Iranians about oral health.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Dry socket is one of the most common post-tooth-extraction complications. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between some of the predisposing factors of dry socket and this complication in all maxillary and mandibular molars and evaluation of its incidence. Furthermore, the two jaws were compared.
Materials and Methods: In this descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study, 150 patients were examined in 2020 in the city of Zahedan. A questionnaire consisting of two sections was designed: In the first section age, gender, systemic disease, smoking status, contraceptive pill consumption, and antibiotic consumption were investigated. In the second section, data related to the difficulty of surgery based on the duration of surgery and the number of local anesthetic cartridges that were administered were collected. Then, the collected data were analyzed by Chi-square and Kruskal-Wallis tests.
Results: The incidence of dry socket was 25.3%. The frequency of dry socket was significantly relevant to smoking, oral contraceptive consumption, difficulty of the surgery, and the number of local anesthetic cartridges that were administered (P≤0.05). Age, gender, controlled systemic disorder, and systemic antibiotic usage for two weeks prior to surgery revealed no significant associations with dry socket (P>0.05). Furthermore, the frequency of dry socket in maxillary and mandibular jaws had a significant difference according to smoking status, difficulty of surgery, and number of local anesthetics carpules (P≤0.05).
Conclusion: It is recommended to identify high-risk groups when performing extraction to consider pre-operative and post-operative measures in order to reduce postoperative complications.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Mandibular third molar is the most common impacted tooth and craniofacial morphology and facial parameters can be appropriate predictors of impaction of this tooth. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between Gonial angle, mandibular plane inclination, and ramus height with the impaction of mandibular third molar.
Materials and Methods: This retrospective descriptive-analytical study was performed by analysis of lateral cephalometric radiographic images of 172 patients in city of Zahedan in 2020. The status of eruption of mandibular third molars was determined by clinical examination and assistance of panoramic radiographic images and samples were categorized into four groups: fully erupted (1), partially impacted (2), impacted (3), partially developed (4). Then, the Gonial angle, mandibular plane, and ramus height were measured on lateral cephalometric images of each group and collected data were analyzed by Chi-square test and analysis of variance (ANOVA).
Results: Among the patients, 68.02% were female and 31.97% were male. The difference between the mean values of Gonial angle of four groups was not statistically significant (P>0.05). In the fourth group, the mean value of mandibular plane inclination was significantly higher (29.74) and the mean value of the ramus height was significantly less (49.21 mm) than other groups.
Conclusion: According to the preformed analysis and obtained results, Gonial angle, mandibular plane, and ramus height were not accurate predictors for the impaction of mandibular third molar and further studies should be undertaken in this filed.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Considering the extensive connections of anatomical components in the head and neck region, it is expected that a change in one of the components of this functional unit will have effects on other parts. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of correction of class III skeletal relationship with orthognathic surgery on the angles between cervical vertebrae.
Materials and Methods: This descriptive-analytical retrospective study was conducted in 1403 at the orthodontic department of Babol Dental School. 30 patients with class III skeletal malformations in the age group of 18 to 48 years who underwent orthognathic surgery (single jaw or double jaw) and had a good quality lateral cephalometric radiography were randomly selected and available based on entry and exit criteria. Dependent variables including 13 parameters in the cranial (angles of SNA, SNB, ANB and Wits App), cervical (the angle between the OPT and CVT lines with each other and with the true perpendicular line) and craniocervical area (the angle of the OPT and CVT lines with the horizontal planes of the head, including the mandibular and palatal plane) of the head and neck were used to evaluate the angles between the cervical vertebrae. The data were analyzed using SPSS22 software and independent t-test, and in case of non-normality, Will-Coxon test was used.
Results: In this study, a total of 30 samples were examined. None of the measured parameters of the cervical area before and after surgery showed a statistically significant change (P<0.05). By comparing the angles between the cervical vertebrae, the PP/CVT angle in the craniocervical region showed statistically significant changes (P=0.024). The values of PP/OPT, MP/OPT, SN/CVT, and MP/CVT angles increased slightly after surgery, but they were not statistically significant (P≥0.05), which showed a relative increase in the tension of the head on the upper part of the cervical spine.
Conclusion: Changing the position of the jaw following orthognathic surgery could cause head extension, but it had no effect on the position of the first 4 cervical vertebrae.
