Abstract

The goal of this investigation is to compare the extent of fluoride uptake by sound enamel following application of two commercial mouthrinses containing sodium fluoride (0.2%) and a topical gel containing APF (1.23%) produced in Iran with those of foreign standardized ones. Sixty extracted premolars were used. Each tooth was divided into two lingual and buccal halves, one half as control, the other one as experimental. Enamel biopsy technique (two- step acid etching) was used to determine the concentration of fluoride and calcium in each sample. For data comparison and fluoride uptake estimation, the depths of layers with the use of linear regression analysis were standardized to 25 and 50um. The analysis showed that in Iranian mouthrinse no. 1, there is linear correlation between fluoride concentration and enamel depth, in both control and experimental group at the first and second layers, while, in other groups, this correlation was observed just at the first layer (superficial enamel layer). The greatest fluoride uptake was seen at Iranian mouthrinse no.2 and the least was seen at foreign mouthrinse no. 3. From among two APF gels, the greatest uptake was observed at gel no. 1 (Iranian). The results showed that all three Iranian products increase fluoride content of enamel, moreover the level of fluoride uptake, while applying Iranian products, in comparison with foreign ones, shows considerable increase.

Abstract

Due to the differences in the composite and morphology of dentin in primary and permanent teeth, it is necessary to make improvements in bonding techniques to promote the strength of composite resins bonded to the dentinal surface, in primary teeth. The use of lower radiation, to make structural and chemical changes in dentinal surfaces has been investigated. This research was conducted to evaluate the shear strength of the composite bonded to primary teeth dentin after Nd: YAG laser radiation and acid etching for conditioning. Peripheral dentin of the buccal and lingua! surfaces of 60 extracted posterior primary teeth were exposed and polished with 600 grit with Sic paper. The teeth were divided randomly in 3 groups of 20 teeth. In group 1 etching gel, primer and adhesive of scotch bond multipurpose system (SMP), in group 2 laser at 1.6 w and 80 mj/pulse, and in group 3 laser at 2 s and 700 mj/pulse were used. Moreover, in groups 2 and 3, after laser radiation, acid etching, primer and adhesive of SMP system were applied. After necessary laboratory tests, the mean shear bond strength in MPa were 20.99±5.3 (group 1), 23.82±6.31 (group 2) and 26.58±5.59 (group 3). ANOVA, scheffe, tukey statistical tests showed that the bond strengths of group 3 were statistically higher than group 1. The frequency of dentin cohesive failures were significantly higher in groups 2 and 3, compared to group 1 that indicates a higher bond strength in these groups. Scanning electron mirographs of laser radiated surfaces, show a porous and rough surface morphology that enhances the mechanical bond of the composite.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Formocresol (FC) has been a popular pulpotomy medicament for primary dentition in recent decades. Concerns have been raised about the toxicity and potential carcinogenicity of FC, and alternatives have been proposed. Recently, the physical and biological properties of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) have been described in many studies. The aim of this study was to compare the success rate of pulpotomy with MTA (made in Iran) and FC in primary molars.
Materials and Methods: In this clinical trial, 30 primary molars needing pulpotomy treatment were selected and randomly divided into two groups: (15 teeth in FC and 15 in MTA group). The teeth were then pulpotomized and restored. Clinical and radiographic results were recorded at 1-3-6-9 and 12 months and success rates of two groups were compared using Fisher’s exact test with p<0.05 as the level of significance.
Results: After 12 months, there was no statistical significant difference between MTA group (85.8%) and FC group (93.3%) (P 1.0). The only observed radiographic failure was internal resorption.
Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, MTA can be used as an alternative to formocresol in primary teeth pulpotomy.
