Abstract

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE AR-SA Xeroradiography is a modern imaging method that can aid diagnosis of oral, dental and maxillofacial lesions, treatment planning and  follow-ups. It has been used since 1970 in medical field and has entered dentistry in 1980 after some modifications. In this technique, x-ray is used with no need to developing and fixing radiographs, negatoscope and dark rooms. A selenium sheet is used in this method that is constantly charged electrostatically. A special powder called toner is used for developing process. In order to have a permanent cliché, a photograph is made from the image. The image brightness and contrast is much better than conventional radiographs while the time of exposure and developing is less. While in medical fields it is used in extraoral imaging, in dentistry xeroradiography is used only in intraoral imaging.

Abstract

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE AR-SA In 9 patients of 11-20 years old, Pulp response to phosphoric acid 37% during a 15 seconds etching period was studied. Class V cavities in cervical third of premolars were prepared as symmetrical couples. All the process was identical in both groups of case and control. In test group, 15 seconds etching period by phosphoric acid 37% was done. The teeth were then restored by ZOE. Only one case complained of pain and discomfort. After 1,2,4,6,12,24,56 days the teeth were extracted. In 100 sections made from extracted teeth of 5 patients , pulpal response to acid reaction was a mild inflammation with good prognosis.

Abstract

Background and Aims: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the sealing ability of different thicknesses of orthograde MTA plugs in comparison with 5 mm gutta-percha.

Materials and Methods: Fifty extracted single rooted human teeth were collected. After root canal preparation, the samples were randomly divided into 4 experimental (n=10) and two control groups (n=5). In group 1, the apical 5 mm of the canals were obturated using laterally condensed gutta-percha and sealer AH26. Groups 2, 3 and 4 received 2, 3 and 4-mm thick orthograde MTA plug, respectively. Thereafter, the coronal portion of specimens was exposed to the microbial solution containing streptococcus sanguis and the root tips were placed in phenol red lactose broth. The color changes were observed within 60 days. The data were analyzed with Fisher exact test.

Results: The leakage was found in all samples (100%) in group 1 and 72.7%, 30.8% and 50% of the samples in groups 2, 3 and 4, respectively. Significant difference was found between 3 mm thickness of MTA plug and gutta percha and sealer (P=0.02).

Conclusion: According to the findings, it seems that 3 mm thickness of orthograde MTA plug had better sealing ability than the other thicknesses of MTA plug as well as the 5 mm of gutta-percha.

Abstract

  Background and Aims : The root fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth depends on the types of posts. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of two types of bonded non-metallic posts with different elasticity modulus on the fracture resistance of endodontically treated teeth under compressive loads.

  Materials and Methods: In this in vitro experimental study, 20 fresh extracted mandibular premolars were selected and sectioned adjacent to the CEJ and then were endodontically treated. The specimens were randomly divided into two groups (n=10). After post space preparations, the fiber RTD Light posts (R.T.D, France) and zirconia coated fiber posts (ICE light, Danville) were cemented into the root canals. Composite resin (Lumiglass R.T.D, France) cores were built up. Aluminium foil was used to mimic the PDL, and the specimens were embedded in acrylic resin and tested in a Universal Testing Machine. A compressive load was applied at a 90 degree angle until fracture at a crosshead speed of 1mm/min. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and T test .

  Results: The mean fracture resistance of R.T.D group was (1083.11 ± 156.74 (N)) and the mean of ICE light group was (865.18 ± 106.24 (N)). The highest mean fracture resistance was observed in RTD fiberglass and a statistically significant difference was observed between the two groups (P<0.001).

  Conclusion: FRC posts with zirconia coating due to unfavorable fractures of the teeth should be used with caution, and thus, fiber posts are preferred.

Abstract

  Background and Aims: Constant contact with dentists, the ability to diagnose early effects of tobacco use on oral health and general health has made the dental clinics to the appropriate place to provide smoking cessation counseling. The aim of this study was to determine the effectiveness of an educational intervention using Trans Theoretical Model (TTM) on the smoking cessation in patients attending dental clinics.

  Materials and Methods: This study was a quasi-experimental study conducted in 2013. 40 patients in the experimental and control groups were completed self-administered questionnaire including general and demographic questions, change questionnaire stages, change scale processes, smoking cessation self-efficacy scale, decisional balance scale before and 6 after months educational program. The experimental group received two training sessions through group discussion for 60 minutes. Data were analyzed using Chi-square tests, independent T-test, Mann-Whitney and Wilcoxon tests.

  Results: In terms of the patients distribution in the change stages (pre-contemplation, contemplation and preparation), there was no significant difference between the experimental (22.5, 35, 42.5%) and control groups (27.5, 35, 37.5%) before intervention (P = 0.55). However, 10 and 20 percent of patients in the experimental group was reported action and maintenance stage regarding smoking cessation after intervention (P<0.001). Results showed a significant increase in the mean score of experimental process of change, behavioral process of change, proc and self efficacy (P<0.001). Also, the mean score of cons constructs decreased significantly after education in the experimental group (P<0.001).

  Conclusion: Results indicated that the educational intervention using the TTM to increase the patients' smoking cessation rate was effective. Therefore, it is recommended that dentists have to become more familiar with TTM frameworks for smoking cessation.

Abstract

Background and Aims: The chronic blood disorders could have negative effects on various fields of patient’s quality of life. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the quality of life and oral health in major thalassemia and hemophilia patients.
Materials and Methods: This cross- sectional study was performed in 1398 on 56 hemophilia patients and 35 thalassemia major patients over 15 years of age. All the subjects were examined clinically to determine DMFT and CPITN, then the subjects completed OHIP-14, xerostomia, SF36 questionnaire. Data was analyzed with T-Test, ANOVA and Chi-square using Stata14.
Results: TThe mean age of hemophilia and beta-thalassemia patients was 32.3 and 26.2, the mean DMFT index was 8.75 and 7.6, and CPITN index was 2.02 and 2.26, respectively. Analysis of the components of the DMFT index showed a predominance of number of decayed teeth over filled teeth in both groups. According to the CPITN index, 19.6% and 20% of hemophilia and thalassemia patients had gingival healthy, respectively. The mean quality of life total scores in patients with hemophilia and thalassemia was 62.11 and 58.07, respectively. The mean DMFT had a significant negative relationship with the quality of life total scores in both groups (P<0.05). There was a significant relationship between different domains of quality of life and CPITN and OHIP-14 in thalassemia patients (P<0.05). Also patients with dry mouth had lower quality of life.
Conclusion: Hemophilia and thalassemia patients indicated undesirable oral health. It is necessary to improve multidimensional strategies in various fields of health care in patients.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Nowadays, the best choice for replacing missing teeth are dental implants, however, failure is not unexpected. One of the factors that plays an important role in the implant failure is bacterial microleakage which could cause biological complication. The aim of this study was to compare the bacterial microleakage between the two types of implants.
Materials and Methods: In the present interventional study, SPI and Dentis implants were placed bilaterally in the premolar-molar area of the patients' mandible. One day and 14 days after the delivery of the crown, by removing the crown and removing the abutment, sampling was performed using a sterile paper cone from four areas. One day after sample culturing, the number of colonies was counted. All data were entered into SPSS 23 and were analyzed using independent samples t-test and paired t-test with a significance level of 0.05.
Results: The amount of bacteria in implant sulcus was significantly different between the two types of implants (P=0.003). After 14 days, the amount of bacteria in SPI implant sulcus significantly decreased more than Dentis implant sulcus (P=0.001). After 14 days, the amount of bacteria also decreased in all other areas which there were no significant difference between the two types of implants (P>0.05).

Abstract

Background and Aims: Strong bond between the ceramic brackets and ceramic veneers has an important role in cosmetic treatment. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of aging on the shear bond strength (SBS) of ceramic brackets bonded to zirconia after surface preparation by Neodymium-doped Yttrium Aluminum Garnet (Nd: YAG) laser or sandblasting with alumina.
Materials and Methods: This experimental study was conducted on 24 zirconia blocks and these blocks were randomly divided into two groups for surface preparation and each was sub-divided into three time intervals. Surface preparation was done by sandblasting with alumina: in SG1 (Immediately after sandblasting), SG2 (2 weeks after sandblasting), and SG3 (3 months after sandblasting) groups. For the Nd: YAG laser (1/5W, 20Hz, 10s) with non-contact mode: in LG4 (Immediately after laser), LG5 (2 weeks after laser), and LG6 (3 months after laser) groups. The ceramic brackets were bonded to the zirconia blocks. The SBS and adhesive remnant index (ARI) were evaluated and compared among test groups. Dara were analyzed using Mann Whitney test.
Results: There was no significant difference between the SBS of SG1 and LG4 (P=0.430), SG2 and LG5 (P=0.382) and SG3 and LG6 (P=0.326) groups. LG4 group showed the highest shear bond strength. After aging (2 weeks and 3 months), the laser groups showed higher SBS. There was no significant difference in the ARI between SG1 and LG4 (P=0.220), SG2 and LG5 (P=0.154), SG3 and LG6 (P=0.527) groups.
Conclusion: No significant difference was observed between the Nd: YAG laser and sandblasted groups in terms of SBS and ARI over time. Therefore, Nd: YAG laser could be used as a surface treamnet method in Zirconia crowns for bonding to ceramic brackets.
