Abstract

Background and Aim: Soft tissue condition around dental implant is an essential part for long term healthy and esthetic outcome. The aim of this study was to compare soft tissue dimensions between implant supported single  tooth replacement and the contra-lateral natural tooth.

Materials and Methods: This retrospective study was performed on dentate patients treated with anterior single  tooth implant at least 1 year ago. Of twenty eight, fourteen patients had been treated with one stasge method and others with two stage method. Biologic width (BW), papilla index (PI), and mucosal thickness (MT) were evaluated around implants and contra-lateral teeth clinically and compared with each other. The Wilcoxon test, Mann-Whitney test, and Student pair t-test were used to assess the differences between one stasge and two stage implants, and implant and tooth groups.

Results: The mean BW around one stasge implants, two stage implants, and contra-lateral teeth were 1.42±0.48 mm, 1.67±0.48 mm, and 1.47±0.60 mm, respectively. The mean PI adjacent to one stasge implants, Two stage implants, and contra-lateral teeth were 2.50±0.52, 2.53±0.55, and 2.72±0.47, correspondingly. The mean MT around one stasge implants, two stage implants, and contra-lateral teeth were 3.10±0.48, 3.09±0.75, and 2.57±0.88, respectively. There was no statistically significant difference among one stasge implants, two stage implants, and contra-lateral teeth with regard to measured variables.

Conclusion: Based on the results of this investigation, in standard condition, it seems that there is no noticeable difference in indicators of biologic width, papilla index, and mucosal thickness around one stasge implants, two stage implants, and contra-lateral teeth.

Abstract

Gingival overgrowth is a drug-associated side effect occurs in pediatric patients. Phenytoin, cyclosporine, calcium channel blockers, and amphetamine are primary drugs that can cause gingival enlargement in children. Pediatric patients are more prone to drug-associated gingival overgrowth rather than adults. Gingival overgrowth may cause functional, phonetic, and nutritional difficulties, and more importantly, may affect the psycho-social development, self-esteem, and quality of life in children. However, the researches about this issue are rare. This Part I paper provides an analysis of pediatric systemic disease and corresponding prescribed medications for selected physical and mental health conditions. This paper describes the morbidity and risk for children related to gingival overgrowth and proposes a framework for action that will be more completely described in a part II paper on this topic.

Abstract

Background and Aims : Free gingival graft is one of the most predictable procedures for gingival augmentation, but patient’s discomfort and pain during healing period of palatal donor site is a significant concern. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of 660nm low power laser on pain and healing in palatal donor sites.

Materials and Methods: The present split mouth randomized controlled clinical trial was performed in 12 patients at the department of periodontics of Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Patients’ allocation was done by balanced block randomization (laser group and placebo group). In laser test group (wave length: 660 nm, power: 200mW, time of irradiation: 32s) was applied immediately post-surgery and in day 1, 2, 4 and 7 after that. In the control group, laser application was done with off power mode. Evaluation of epithelialization and healing was done with H2O2 and photograph. The number of palliative pills and bleeding was recorded. Wilcoxon test was used to analyze healing during the study. Patient’s pain during study was analyzed using repeated measure ANOVA. Mc Nemar test was used to analyze bleeding. Level of statistical significance was set at 0.05.

Results: Laser group showed better epithelialization (P=0.02) and healing (P=0.01) in day 14 after surgery and showed better epithelialization in day 21(P=0.05). No statistically differences were observed between laser group and control group in terms of bleeding and medication (P=0.51), (P=1).

Conclusion: According to the results of this study, the low power laser can promote palatal wound healing during the second and third week after free gingival graft procedures.

Abstract

Background and Aims: There is an increased risk of periodontal diseases in patients undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment. Chlorhexidine (CHX) is frequently used to promote oral hygiene; however, it is associated with several complications. Herbal mouthwashes can be used as the substitute without having similar complications. The aim the present study was to compare the effects of herbal mouthwashes (Matrica and Persica) with CHX 0.2% on the periodontal parameters of patients under fixed orthodontic treatment.

Materials and Methods: In a double-blind randomized clinical trial, 84 patients under fix orthodontic treatment were selected. After receiving oral hygiene instruction, the patients were randomly assigned to four groups (group 1: Matrica, group 2: Persica, group 3: CHX 0.02%, group 4: normal saline). Dental plaque scores (PI), gingival inflammation (GI) and papillary bleeding (PBI) indices were measured at the beginning, 1 week after receiving oral hygiene instructions and 30 days after mouthwash consumption. The scores of the periodontal indices were statistically analyzed by Kruskal Wallis, ANOVA the paired Mann-whitney U test and Tukey test.

Results: All of the indices were significantly reduced in study groups (except for the control). Matrica and Persica mouthwashes were similarly effective in improving the periodontal parameters. Their efficacy in decreasing the PBI scores was significantly higher than CHX 0.2% (P<0.01).

Conclusion: Application of the two herbal mouthwashes was effective in improving the periodontal parameters in patients undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Lichen planus is a chronic inflammatory mucocutaneous disease with unknown etiology. One of the most common manifestations of patients with oral lichen planus is gingival involvement in the form of generalized erythematous areas. The aim of this study was to review the articles evaluating the role of plaque control on the gingival manifestations of oral lichen planus.
Materials and Methods: Motor searches of Ovid Medline and EM base databases, PubMed, Google Scholar, and Science Direct were searched for article published between January 1990 and December 2017 using of relevant key words. After reviewing the abstracts of articles, 20 full articles were selected and among them, 7 relevant articles were reviewed in this study.
Conclusion: From the literature, it was concluded that effective plaque control is the main part of lesions treatment and improvement of symptoms and gingival manifestations of oral Lichen planus.
