Abstract
Background and Aims: There is not sufficient knowledge about the relationship between smoking and vertical bone loss in periodontal diseases. There are also important evidences which propose harmful effects of smoking on periodontal tissues including alveolar bone. The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between smoking and prevalence and severity of vertical bone defects.
Materials and Methods: This case-control study consisted of 71 individuals with angular bone defects (case) and 69 individuals without angular bone defects (control) between 18 to 70 years old. People were selected by radiography, examining and filling up the questionnaire. Vertical bone defect was defined as interproximal bone resorption to the extent of ≥2mm with a clear angel towards the Mesial or Distal of root. Data were analyzed using SPSS software.
Result: The mean age of studied individuals was 37.14 years (±12.72). Among people with angular bone defects, 21.1% were light smokers and 25.4% were moderate-heavy smokers. There was a significant difference between smokers and nonsmokers in terms of smoking status and the chance of having angular bone defects (P=0.001). Simultaneous study of the effect of sex, age, brushing and smoking status showed that except sex, other variables have a significant effect on angular bone defects. The chance of having angular bone defects in light and heavy-moderate smokers was more than that in nonsmokers (adjusted OR=4.17 and adjusted OR=3.87, respectively).
Conclusion: These observations propose that smoking is related to increase in prevalence and severity of vertical bone defects. Smoking is considered as a potential risk factor for vertical periodontal bone loss.

Abstract
Background and Aims: Today, use of adhesive systems is the most common materials in restorative dental procedures. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different air-drying periods on the microtensile bond strength of composite to dentin using adhesive.
Materials and Methods: 15 sound molar teeth were selected. The an occlusal surfaces of teeth were removed with silicon carbide disks (3M/USA) to reach flat surface of dentin. Then according to the air drying of solvent, the teeth were divided to five groups. After 5 sec etching and rinsing for 15 sec , the teeth were air dried for 3 sec . Then Singlebond (3M) was used with different air-drying times (0s, 2s, 5s, 10s, 30s) and cured. Then after insertion and curing of Saremco (microhybrid low shrinkage/Switzerland) composite, the teeth were thermocycled for 500 cycles. Then hour glass slabs with 1 mm2 interface was created. Specimens were then subjected to µTBS force until fracture. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and Bonferroni tests.
Results: Statistical tests showed that there were significant differences between bond strength of groups (P=0.002). The mean of µTBS for the 2 Sec and 30 Sec evaporating time was the most and the least vawes, respectively.
Conclusion: An optimum air-drying time for solvent evaporation was the lowest time recommended by the manufacturer. Over and under evaporation time decreased µTBS significantly.

Abstract
Background and Aims: Periodontitis does not affect on all patients by the same way. There are some risk factors in some people that make them more sensitive to progress of periodontitis. Smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, and special pathogens increase the risk of periodontitis. Other factors such as stress, depression and anxiety, are not crucial risk factors for periodontitis yet. Biologic explanation of this relation is that mental conditions and exposure to stressful situations can alter immune response. The aim of this study was to review the psychological factors of anxiety and depression associated with periodontitis.
Materials and Methods: For this review article, we have searched through internet by the following keywords periodontal disease, anxiety, depression. We have tried to cover almost all dental– related sites and journals as well as Pubmed from 1990-2010.
Conclusion: Most published studies support a positive relationship between periodontitis and several psycho-social factors. Life style, stressful conditions, hormonal changes, nonchalance in oral hygiene, habits such as smoking are predisposing factors in periodontal diseases.

Abstract
Background and Aims: Different adhesives with different solvents may have different solvent evaporation rates. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the solvent evaporation in the self etch and total etch adhesive in different air drying times.
Materials and Methods: Five adhesives were used in this study: Excite, Prime & Bond NT, UNO, Single Bond, SE Bond Primer. Twelve drops of each adhesive were used for each period of air drying (5, 15, 30 sec). The percentage of mass loss was measured during each test. Data were analized using two-way ANOVA and Tukey.
Results: Acetone base adhesives showed more loss of mass than other adhesives (P<0.01). P&B NT showed more loss of mass than other adhesives in all air drying times (P<0.01). Adhesives showed different evaporation rates in different air times (P<0.01).
Conclusion: Adhesives with acetone/water or alcohol/water solvent shows more stable behavior in comparison with adhesives containing pure aqueous solvents.

Abstract
Background and Aims: To ensure root canal treatment success, endodontic microbiota should be efficiently reduced. Several irrigation devices have been recently introduced with the main objective of improving root canal disinfection.The purpose of this study was to evaluate the rinsing effect of RinsEndo system in reduction of enterococcus faecalis in comparison with conventional hand syringe in infected root canals.
Materials and Methods: 60 extracted single canal anterior teeth were infected with enterococcus faecalis and divided into 3 groups: RinsEndo system, conventional hand syringe and control group. The enterococcus faecalis colonies were counted in each group before and after rinsing. Data were analyzed using Variance and Kruskal Wallis test.
Results: The mean of enterococcus faecalis growth after rinsing was 3.50×103 in group with conventional syring rinsing, 2.04×103 in group with RinsEndo washing and 6.11×103 in control group. Reduction of enterococcus faecalis after rinsing was statistically significant in each group (P<0.001). The amount of reduction in number of colonies with RinsEndo and conventional syringe rinsing was higher in comparison with control group and this difference was significant (P<0.001). RinsEndo rinsing effect was statistically significantly higher in comparison to conventional syringe as well (P<0.001).
Conclusion: Rinsing with RinsEndo system was significantly more efficient in reduction of enterococcus faecalis from root canal in comparison with hand syringe washing.

Abstract
Background and Aims: With the increasing use of CT (Computed Tomoghraphy) scans in dentistry especially in the implantology, there may be significant increases in the radiation exposure and its risk. During the last year’s ConeBeam Computed Tomoghraphy (CBCT) has been introduced as an imaging modality for dentistry. The aim of this review article was to present comprehensive information have been published, regarding the radiation dose and image quality of Conventional Multislice Computed Tomography (MSCT), Cone-Beam CT (CBCT) and periapical radiography in dentistry imaging.
Materials and Methods: A review of the literature was carried out in PubMed, Google Scholar, Science Direct and Scopus database using key words (CBCT, MSCT, periapical radiography, radiation dose of dentistry and image quality). These searches were limited to the articles published between the years of 1993 to 2015.
Conclusion: In comparison to MSCT, CBCT had a short scanning times and lower radiation dose, but in comparison to periapical radiography, CBCT had higher radiation dose. In contrast, CBCT with flat panel detector had higher spatial resolution to MSCT. The periapical radiography also had a good image contrast and relatively high resolution. Generally, CBCT was suitable for hard tissue imaging and MSCT was preferred for soft tissue imaging.

Abstract
Background and Aims: Microorganisms are the main cause of pulpal and periapical diseases. The most important failure factor is the lack of proper seals for the canal, resulting in microbial leakage. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the sealing ability of ProRoot MTA and Bio MTA in canal obturation using fluid infiltration.
Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, 46 extracted mandibular premolar single canal teeth were used. After preparing and disinfecting the teeth with 3% sodium hypochlorite, their crowns were cut off from the cement-enamel junction. The teeth were then randomly divided into four groups: Group 1 (n=20) Bio MTA, Group 2 MTA ProRoot (n=20), negative and positive control groups, each of them contained 3 teeth. The preparation of teeth was performed using the step back method. The filled teeth were then evaluated by fluid filtration for leakage prevention. Data were analyzed by Mann-Whitney test and Tukey test (α=0.05).
Results: The results of statistical analysis showed that there was no significant difference between the MTA ProRoot and Bio MTA in sealing ability (P>0.05). That micro leakage is less in the Bio MTA group than in the ProRoot MTA group, but the difference was not significant.
Conclusion: This study showed that MTA ProRoot and Bio MTA can be used as appropriate canal filling materials.

Abstract
Background and Aims: Gypsum products are used for several different purposes. Adaptation and success of casting restorations are dependent on dimensional accuracy, strength, and reproduction of details of dental gypsums. This study was designed to evaluate the dimensional changes and accurate details reproduction of three type IV dental gypsums.
Materials and Methods: 60 samples in 3 groups of dental gypsums of G30,Yeti Rock and FujirockEP were evaluated. The detail reproduction of 50 micron scratched line was analyzed by a microscope at 12× magnification. The samples were assayed for dimensional changes at 2 and 24 hours and 1 week after pouring. Photograph images were taken from samples in fixed distance by a camera (Canon D600) and analyzed in corel draw software. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and chi-square (P<0.05).
Results: There were significant differences in the details reproduction between three gypsums (P≤0.05) and the highest values was for Fujirock EP, Yeti Rock. The G30 did not reconstruct the details. There was no significant difference in the dimensional changes of the evaluated gypsums based on time (P≥0.05).
Conclusion: All three different gypsums evaluated in this study showed the dimensional stability during one week. Fujirock EP and Yeti Rock could reconstruct the details and G30 gypsum could not.
