Abstract

Background and Aim: Dental pulp calcification may have the same pathogenesis as vascular calcifications. Pulp stones are calcified mass, which are commonly observed in usual dental radiographs. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between pulp stones and ischemic CVD.

Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional descriptive-analytic study on 20-25-year-old patients who had at least 8 intact teeth and were referred to Afshar hospital for cardiovascular examinations. Relationship between vascular stenosis and dental pulp stone was explored.

Results: Sixty one patients who had undergone angiography were studied. They included 32 male (52.5%) and 29 female (47.5%). 38 patients had at least one stenotic vessel (from one to three vessels) and the others (37.7%) showed normal angiographic findings. 73.8% (31 cases) of the patients with dental pulp stones suffered from coronary narrowing where as only 36.8% (7 cases) of the patients without dental pulp stones showed coronary vessels narrowing. Pulp stones were mostly seen in first and second Molar teeth.

Conclusion: According to the results, we can state that oral and maxillofacial radiology is helpful in screening of cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Slow polymerization rate in early stage of light curing process leads to higher monomers movement and entering in polymer network that cause higher mechanical properties.The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of light activation methodes (immediate, 5 and 10 minutes delay) on the push-out bond strength of cemented fiber posts in different regions of root canal with two types of resin cements.

Materials and Methods: In sixty extracted human single canal, the teeth were decoronated from cement enamel junction and after root canal therapy, FRC postec plus were cemented with two resin cements, Duolink and Variolink 2, in three curing methods; immediate, 5 and 10 minutes of delay. After storing in a dark place for 24 hours, they were cut into three sections: coronal, middle and apical. The push-out bond strength test was performed using a universal testing machine. The failure modes were observed using a stereomicroscope. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey post hoc test (P<0.05).

Results: In Duolink, immediate light curing had significantly higher bond strength than that of two delayed methods (P>0.05). In immediate light curing method, regardless of root region, Duolink had higher push-out bond strength than that of Variolink 2 (P=0.02). In all subgroups, there were reductions in the bond strengths from coronal to apical. Mixed failure at the cement-fiber post interface was predominent in all groups.

Conclusion: 5 and 10 minutes delay caused reduction in the push-out bond strength for Variolink 2 but did not have significant effect for Duolink resin cement.

Abstract


Background and Aims: Delay in light irradiance can improve the polymeric structure and mechanical properties of resin cement and uniform stress distribution. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of light activation modes (immediate, 5 and 10-minute delay) on the push-out bond strength of cemented fiber posts with two types of resin cements in different of root canal regions.
Materials and Methods: In sixty extractedsingle canal and endodontic therapied roots, FRC Postec Plus were cemented with two resin cements, Nexus3 and Panavia F2.0, in three curing methods, immediate, 5, and 10 minute delay. After 24 hours storing in a dark place, they were cut into three sections: coronal, middle and apical. The push-out bond strength test was performed using the universal testing machine. Failure modes were evaluated using stereomicroscope. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey post hoc test with P<0.05 as the level of significance.
Results: In Nexus3, the immediate light curing had significantly higher bond strength (11.18±4.32) than delay methods (P=0.001). In Panavia F2.0, the 5-minute delay had significantly the highest bond strength (13.34±4.62) (P<0.05). There was no correlation between the different light curing methods and root canal regions. In Nexus3, the coronal region had higher bond strength (11.83±3.7) than that of middle (9.12±3.1) (P=0.015), and middle than of apical (5.65±2.77) (P=0.00), and coronal than that of apical (P=0.002). In Panavia F2.0, there were not significant differences among regions (P>0.05).
Conclusion: Delay in light curing of dual-cure resin cement's had different effects on the push-out bond strength.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Color is the most important and complicated part of aesthetic dentistry. The tooth color matching of restorations is considered as one of the most difficult tasks in the restorative dentistry. The aim of this study to evaluate the effect of two training methods on the dental students’ ability in determining tooth color matching.
Materials and Methods: In this study, 40 dentistry students participated which randomly allocated into two groups. The first group consisted of students who learned teeth color matching methods practically. In the second group, training booklet was used for learning. Using Vita Classic shade guide series, 4 color samples were chosen and the students of each group were asked to determine samples’ color, before, after and one month after the training.
Results: Booklet learning group was more successful in determining fourth color sample. However, in no studied group and no used samples, the results of one month after learning were not better than that of before learning. Also generally, no significant relationship was found between the color matching accuracy, using glasses, and sex of participants.
Conclusion: The use of booklet learning was more effective than practical learning in color matching accuracy for dental students. Also, using glasses and sex were not effective on their color matching accuracy.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Musculoskeletal disorders are the most common and costly occupational injuries, and dentists are more prone to musculoskeletal problems than other medical professionals. This study aimed to investigate the effect of a course of corrective exercises on the alignment of the thoracic spine and balance in female dentists with increased kyphosis.
Materials and Methods: This research was a quasi-experimental study with a pre-test/post-test design, conducted in the field. Thirty female dentists from Amol and Babol cities (Iran) with increased kyphosis were selected using purposive sampling. The patients were randomly assigned into two groups: control (n=15) and intervention (n=15). In the pre-test, the thoracic curvature angle, static balance, and dynamic balance were assessed using a flexible ruler, the stork balance test, and the Y balance dynamic test, respectively. Then, the intervention group were assigned to perform the exercises for six weeks, while the control group only engaged in daily activities. After completing the exercises, the post-test was conducted. Paired t-tests and analysis of covariance were used to compare intra-group and inter-group differences.
Results: The statistical analysis  showed a significant difference between the two groups in the thoracic curvature angle (P=0.001), static balance (P=0.001), and dynamic balance (P=0.001). The intervention group demonstrated significant improvement in these parameters compared to the control group.
Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, it is recommended that corrective exercises under the supervision of a specialist be included in the weekly exercise program of female dentists with increased kyphosis.
