Abstract

Statement of Problem: Candidal colonies make up a part of natural oral flora and are considered as predisposing factors for opportunistic infections. Since hemodialysis leads to body Immune suppression and make patients susceptible to opportunistic infections, it is useful to investigate the relationship between hemodialysis and such infections.
Purpose: The aim of the present research was to study the relationship between oral candidal colony count and duration of hemodialysis and also to investigate the probable necessity for prophylaxis against oral candidiasis. Factors such as oral temperature, age, sex, denture, smoking, drugs, candidal microscopic view and clinical signs of oral infections, were also studied in relation to candidal colonies.
Material and Methods: The smear of posterior part of tongue and oral fluids from 114 hemodialysis patients in Khorshid hospital, Isfahan University of medical Sciences were cultured. The number of oral candidal colonies and their microscopic view were studied in relation to the duration of hemodialysis and other factors. To analyze the data, Pearson and Spearman statistical tests were used.
Results: No statistical significant relationship was observed between oral candidal colony count and the duration of hemodialysis.
Conclusion: Due to the abundant predisposing factors for oral candidal infection, the probability of oral candidiasis cannot be predicted based on a single factor, namely duration of hemodialysis. As a result,according to this study, the prophylactic prescription of antifungal drugs are not suggested in hemodialysis patients. However, the results of the present study should not be over generalized and more studies are required.

Abstract

Background and Aim: The use of proper temporary restorative materials between appointments is critical in successful root canal treatment. The purpose of this study was to compare the coronal microleakage of four temporary restorative materials including Zonalin, Zamherir, Coltosol and IRM.

Materials and Methods: In this in vitro study, standard access cavities were prepared in 120 intact extracted maxillary and mandibular human first molars. Canal preparation was carried out by the step-back technique, and obturation was performed with gutta-percha and AH26 sealer using the lateral condensation technique. Teeth were randomly divided into 4 experimental groups of 25 teeth each and two positive and negative control groups, each containing 10 teeth. In each experimental group the access cavity was restored with one of the tested materials (Zamherir, Zonalin, IRM and Coltosol). In the negative control group the access cavity was filled entirely with sticky wax and in the positive control group no restorative material was applied. Dye penetration technique was used to evaluate microleakage which was measured under a stereomicroscope. Data were analyzed with one way ANOVA and post hoc Tukey tests. P<0.05 was considered as the limit of significance.

Results: Dye penetration was observed in all groups. Zonalin and Coltosol had the highest and the lowest dye penetration respectively, with a statistically significant difference (p<0.001). There was no significant difference in dye penetration between IRM, and either Coltosol or Zamherir (p>0.05).

Conclusion: The results of this study showed that using Coltosol as a temporary restorative material can provide a better coronal seal in endodontic treatments

Abstract

Masticatory muscle pain is the second most frequent cause of orofacial pain after dental pain. Myofascial pain dysfunction syndrome (MPDS) is the most common form of temporomandibular joint dysfunction. MPDS is a pain that triggers from [sensitive] points in the muscles and fascia and is followed by spasm, tenderness to palpation, restricted movement, fatigue, and sometimes dysfunction. The researchers intended to collect comprehensive information about therapeutic interventions for myofascial pain through the conduction of a critical study based on evidence in the literature. In this review, 51 English articles, published between 1981 and 2013, were extracted from PubMed, Medline, Ovid, and Google Scholar. These articles were then reviewed in detail in two categories, namely pharmaceutical and non-pharmaceutical treatments. MPDS treatment should be first focused on the identification and correction of underlying causes. Thiocolchicoside (TCC), non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and Cox-2 inhibitors are among promising pharmaceutical methods. On the other hand, ultrasound and laser therapy are among promising non-pharmaceutical methods. The complex mechanism of MPDS, along with its underlying peripheral and central nervous mechanisms may make MPDS, difficult to treat, especially in its chronic form.

Abstract

Background and Aims: The structural distinction of primary teeth compared to the permanent teeth leads to a faster penetration of the caries into the pulp, which makes effective treatment necessary. The aim of this study was to determine the success rate of pulpotomy in primary molar teeth and its effective factors using formocresol by students and residents at the department of pediatric dentistry of Hamedan dental school.
Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 113 children who previously had pulpotomy by formecresol in their primary molars (30 children by residents and 83 children by the students) were randomly evaluated based on referral time (at least 12 months after treatment) in terms of clinical and radiographic success rates. Data were analyzed by SPSS20 software using Chi-square and descriptive statistics.
Results: The success of the pulpotomy of primary molar teeth was 81.7%. The success rates of the general students and residents were 79.3% and 87.3%, respectively. The percentage of successful pulpotomy was significantly higher in general students at Stainless Steel Crown (S.S.C), second molar in maxilla (P<0.05), but did not have a significant relationship with age and sex (P>0.05). The percentage of pulpotomy success performed by residents did not have a significant correlation with gender, age, type of repair, type of teeth and jaws (P>0.05). In general, the percentage of success in S.S.C, the second molar and maxillary jaw was higher. Also, the success rate of pulpotomy by residents was significantly higher than that of general- students (P<0.05). The highest rates of pulpotomy failure were related to internal analysis.
Conclusion: Formocresol pulpotomy using S.S.C in the maxillary second molar teeth had higher success rate.

Abstract

Background and Aims: The emergence of social web and impact on the communication of the individuals and the scientific activities of various communities has created serious research links among researchers. This issue that how Iranian researchers keep up to date themselves with new technologies and use them to engage in scientific issues has been a challenge that is constantly being addressed in the digital world. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the scientific production of dentistry in Tehran University of Medical Sciences in the networks of ResearchGate and Mendeley using the Scopus citation database between 2015 and 2016.
Materials and Methods: The study population included all scientific articles in the field of dentistry of Tehran University of Medical Sciences which were indexed in Scopus database between 2013-2016. The results were presented using descriptive statistics in the form of charts and tables.
Results: In this study, it was determined that the scientific outputs of the researchers from Tehran University of Medical Sciences increased in 2015 and 2016. It was also found that the coverage of articles in the field of dentistry published by researchers at Tehran Medical Sciences Universities in the Scopus citation database in the mentioned years, were in a good position in both the Mendeley and ResearchGate networks. In addition, the number of references to the articles by researchers at Tehran University of Medical Sciences on the ResearchGate network in the field of dentistry was more than the Mendeley network.
Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that the performance of the researchers of the Tehran University of Medical Sciences in the field of oral and dental care and the extent of their coverage in the social networks of ResearchGate and Mendeley was high and desirable.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Management of pain and inflammation after third molar surgery is an important challenge of this treatment. Various medications have been proposed for pain control after surgery. Comparing the effectiveness of various drugs used in this field can improve dentists' clinical decisions. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of Ketorolac and Gelofen on pain relief in patients undergoing third molar surgery.
Materials and Methods: This randomized single-blinded clinical trial was performed on 140 patients who were divided into two groups of 70 after receiving the ethical code. The first group was prescribed 400 mg Gelofen capsule for 1 week, while the second group was prescribed 30 mg ketorolac ampule for 1 week. Then, using the visual analog scale (VAS), the patient’s pain was recorded 48 hours, 1 week, and 2 weeks after surgery. Data analysis was carried out using SPSS20 software by descriptive analysis of the results. Ki-square, T-test, and variance analysis were also used for analysis of variables.
Results: The pain level in the ketorolac group after 48 hours, 1 week, and 2 weeks following surgery was significantly less than Gelofen group (P<0.01). Ketorolac effect on pain was irrelevant to the gender, age, and type of tooth variables.
Conclusion: From the results, it was concluded that Ketorolac had greater effect on pain relief after third molar surgery than Gelofen.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Guided endodontics is a new technique that is now evolving. It is used in many treatments, especially in access cavity preparation and locating root canals in teeth with pulp canal obliteration (PCO), microsurgical endodontics, and fiber post removal in retreatments. In addition, this technique is independent of operator experience, requires less treatment time for the patient, and is more precise and safer than conventional endodontics. This technique involves the use of cone beam computed tomography imaging (CBCT), tooth surface scanning, and special software to provide guidance for performing endodontic treatment in a fast, safe, and minimally invasive manner. This review article aims to introduce guided endodontics and to describe its technique, advantages, and limitations.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Dentists faced the highest risk of infection during the COVID-19 pandemic. Educating competent students is the first task of the dental school to overcome the created problems and thus, it is necessary to recognize the created educational deficiencies. This study aimed to assess the students' perspectives from the Dental School at Tehran University of Medical Sciences during the academic year 2019-2020, concerning the competencies expected to be developed during the clinical phase of the general dentistry curriculum during the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings are intended to inform the formulation of educational strategies in the post-pandemic period to address identified gaps in training.
Materials and Methods: During the academic year 2019-2020, a cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted at the School of Dentistry, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Iran. The study consisted of three phases: checklist design, psychometrics, and a survey of general dentistry students in their third to sixth year. The checklist design phase involved a team of four individuals, including educational officials from the faculty, academic staff members, and medical education experts. Experts confirmed the content validity of the checklist, while reliability was assessed using the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC), which indicated favorable validity and reliability. Subsequently, questionnaires formatted as Google Forms and a census approach were distributed to all students enrolled in the general dental course within the clinical section of the School of Dentistry at Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Ultimately, following the data collection process, statistical analysis was conducted utilizing descriptive statistics, including the mean and standard deviation, and the findings were communicated to the group managers.
Results: The assessment of content validity was established at a minimum of 71%, based on the evaluations provided by five experts. Additionally, reliability was measured using an intra-cluster correlation coefficient (ICC) exceeding 0.79, signifying a strong level of both validity and reliability. 122 students (53%) in the clinical stage completed the forms related to the pre-clinical/clinical units passed during the Covid era. Despite having enough training, basics Removable Partial Prosthodontics, Surgery 1, and Restorative 3 courses needed more training. In addition, Basics Removable Partial Prosthodontics, Surgery 1, and Surgery 4 needed the most practical training to acquire the necessary competencies.
Conclusion: The findings of this research indicated that the dental students expressed a desire for increased practice across various levels of pre-clinical and clinical courses. This would suggest that the challenges associated with patient interactions during the COVID-19 pandemic may not be the sole contributing factor. Consequently, alongside the need for educational planning to address the requirements of enrolled students, it appears essential to conduct similar studies in the post-pandemic context. Furthermore, this approach may also prove beneficial in evaluating educational needs for ongoing professional development courses.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Emotional intelligence helps dental students better manage stress and establish effective communication with patients, while self-efficacy strengthens their confidence in performing clinical tasks and acquiring professional skills. The connection between these two factors leads to improved academic and professional performance. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between the emotional intelligence, self-efficacy, and academic success among dental students.
Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study included 55 dental students from Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences - Iran, selected by convenient sampling. To measure academic self-efficacy beliefs, the Sherer questionnaire was used, which consisted of 17 questions with a theoretical score range of 17-85. To measure emotional intelligence, the Bar-On questionnaire was used, consisting of 90 questions with a theoretical score range of 90-450. Academic achievement was assessed using the students' grade point average (GPA). Additionally, gender, living at home or in a dormitory, and parental education levels were considered as background variables. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-tests, and Pearson correlation coefficient.
Results: Among the 55 students who participated in this study, including 30 women and 25 men, the average emotional intelligence score was 84.85, the average self-efficacy score was 62.02, and the average GPA was 16.42. There was a significant difference in the emotional intelligence scores based on gender and living situation, with male students scoring higher than female students and dormitory residents scoring higher than those living at home (P=0.02). There was no significant difference in the self-efficacy scores and GPA between males and females. Students whose mothers had higher levels of education and those living at home had higher GPAs (P<0.03). No statistically significant relationship was found between the academic success and emotional intelligence or self-efficacy (P>0.05).
Conclusion: The findings suggest that while emotional intelligence and self-efficacy may not directly influence academic success, other factors like living environment and parental education can play a role. Understanding these dynamics can help educators focus on holistic student development, addressing not just academic skills but also personal and social factors that contribute to student performance and well-being.
