Abstract

This study is for appointment the dose of systemic 4 groups of patients selected for this study.First group had sealling, root planing and planing and periodontal surgery and no drugs. Second group had sealling, root planing and periodontal surgery with 1 gr per day of tetracycline for two weeks and third group for 3 weeks and fourth group for 4 weeks.The fourth group was.the best clinical improvement. The indexes were PPD, CAL, PI, GI.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of pulsed Nd:YAG laser on the dentin surface by scanning electron microscope (SEM) in order to determine the optimum time and power of radiation to seal the exposed dentinal tubules. Horizontal sections were taken from newly extracted impact third molar teeth. Smear layers from the dentin surfaces were removed by phosphoric acid and all samples were treated with the pulsed Nd:YAG laser in different powers and times. The results of this study showed that the laser pulsed Nd:YAG with power: 1.7 w during 60 seconds was able to seal the exposed dentinal tubules.

Abstract

Statement of Problem: The correlation between the activity of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) enzymes in gingival sulcular fluid (GCF) with inflammation and periodontal attachment loss has been proved, however there are not adequate studies about dental implants.

Purpose: The aim of present study was to investigate the presence and activity level of AST & ALP and their correlation with pocket depth (PD) and bleeding of peri-implant slcular fluid (PISF), and to evaluate the possibility of using these assessments as a diagnostic index in oral implantology.

Material and Methods: In this study, 41 implants as test group and 41 contralateral teeth as control group, in 21 patients were evaluated. At first visit, the general information about implants and the values of pocket probing depth (PPD), modified sulcus bleeding index (mSBl) and modified plaque index (mPI) were recorded. At the second visit, samples of GCF/PISF were collected. AST & ALP activity was determined spectrophotometrically and data were analyzed by "t", "Mann-Whitney" tests and Pearson Spearman correlation coefficient.
Results: The results showed that there was a significant difference in the activity of AST between two study groups (P<0.0001). The average activity of ALP in test group was more than control group but the difference was not significant. After elimination of the confounding variables, the average AST in test group was 54.6 (S£=2.3) and in control groups was 44.8 (SE=2.3) (P=0.004). The average ALP in test group (SE=2.2) and in control (SE=2.2) were 36.6 and 35.4, respectively. Values of AST and ALP were positively correlated with other clinical parameters such as PD and mSBI which was significant in test group.
Conclusion: The present study suggests that PISF analysis could be considered as a proper diagnostic strategy in the evaluation of dental implant success.

Abstract

Statement of Problem: Recently, investigators have presented new methods to reduce polymerization shrinkage of composite resin restorations. It is claimed that more powerful light cure systems associated with a change in radiation patterns, lead to improved mechanical properties and reduced microleakage.

Purpose: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effects of two curing systems, known as Soft-Start, Pulse-Delay, on microleakage and degree of conversion of composite resin restorations.

Materials and Methods: To evaluate microleakage, dye penetration method in class V cavities was applied. 30 extracted human molars filled with three different curing techniques, namely conventional, Soft-Start and Pulse-Delay, were compared. Degree of conversion was measured by FTIR Spectroscopy method immediately after sample curing. Kruskal- Wallis and Mann-Whitney test were used to compare groups.
Results: The degree of microleakage in enamel and dentin among three groups was not significantly different, however, microleakage in gingival and occlusal walls showed a significant difference among Pulse-Delay curing (P=0.001) and Soft-Start curing (P=0.28) groups, meaning that leakage gingival in wall was significantly higher than occlusal wall. This difference was not significant in conventional group. Moreover, the degree of conversion was not statistically significant among three groups (P-0.909).
Conclusion: Soft-Start and Pulse-Delay curing systems, with a two intensity start curing light, do not provide better marginal adaptation in class V composite resin restorations. It should be mentioned that polymerization degree is not also reduced in these methods.

Abstract

Background and Aim: The majority of commercial curing units in dentistry are of halogen lamp type. The new polymerizing units such as blue LED are introduced in recent years. One of the important side effects of light curing is the temperature rise in composite resin polymerization which can affect the vitality of tooth pulp. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the temperature rise in two different composite resins during polymerization with halogen lamps and blue LED.

Materials and Methods: This experimental study investigated the temperature rise in two different composites (Hybrid, Tetric Ceram/Nanofilled, Filteke Supreme) of A2 shade polymerized with two halogen lamps (Coltolux 50, 350 mW/cm2 and Optilux 501 in standard, 820 mW/cm2 and Ramp, 100-1030 mW/cm2 operating modes) and one blue LED with the intensity of 620 mW/cm2. Five samples for each group were prepared and temperature rise was monitored using a k-type thermocouple. Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA, two-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD tests with P<0.05 as the limit of significance.

Results: Light curing units and composite resins had statistically significant influence on the temperature rise (p<0.05). Significantly, lower temperature rise occurred in case of illumination with Coltolux 50.There was no significant difference between Optilux 501 in standard curing mode and LED. Tetric Ceram showed higher temperature rise.

Conclusion: According to the results of this study the high power halogen lamp and LED could produce significant heat which may be harmful to the dental pulp.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Dentists are exposed to mercury from dental amalgam in their routine occupational practice. Excess exposure to mercury is harmful and the measurement of mercury content of urine is a reliable and valid assessment of the level of mercury exposure from dental amalgam. The aim of this study was the measurement of urine mercury in dentists of Tehran and assessment of some possible related factors.

Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was performed randomly on 211 dentists in all regions in Tehran city (center, north, south, west, and east) between 1381 and 1383. Dentists were asked to give a sample of urine in the day of visit and to complete a questionnaire consisting of variables such as age, working history, handling of amalgam, environmental parameters and general health situation. Urine samples were analyzed by cold vapour atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Data were analyzed by Kruskall Walis, Kendall and Mann Whitney tests, with p<0.05 as the limit of significance.

Results: The mean of urine mercury content in Tehran dentists was 3.1 (± 3.95) which was lower than the international TLV (Threshold Limit Value). There was a significant relation between urine mercury level and working hours per day (P=0.006). This relation was observed with working hours per week too (P=0.006). In general dentists, there was a positive relation between urine mercury and age (0.008) as well as the practicing years (P=0.034). A significant relation was found between urine mercury and the number of amalgam repairs and replacements in restorative specialists (p=0.039). There was a significant relation between the number of amalgam fillings in the mouth and urine mercury in general practitioners (p=0.027). The type of amalgam (predosed capsules or bulk powder) had a significant effect on the urine mercury content (P=0.001). There was no significant relation between urine mercury and other variables of the study such as the squeezing of triturated amalgam, storage method of residual amalgam, method of storing mercury and office ventilation.

Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, the mean urine mercury content of dentists of Tehran was below the international TLV. The use of precapsulated amalgams had significant effect on the urine mercury. Most of the dentists were working in public or semiprivate clinics, so it is concluded that the level of general hygiene and specially mercury hygiene in these centers seems to be acceptable.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Dental Amalgam is a common restorative material for posterior teeth. Because of Hg content in the composition of amalgam, during the handling of material, mercury may release as vapor in the environment. Excess amount of mercury vapor can cause serious health problems in dental personnel. The aim of this investigation was to determine mercury vapor concentration in working environment of dentists in Tehran.

Materials and Methods: 211 dental clinics were participated in this cross-sectional study. The clinics were randomly selected from different regions of Tehran (north, center, south, east and west). The dentists were asked to complete a questionnaire including items on demographic characteristics such as age, sex and work history, method of handling of amalgam, environmental characteristics and general health conditions. Environmental measurements of mercury vapor in dentists’ offices were done by mercury absorption tubes (Hydrar) and personal pumps (SKC, 222-3, England) as suggested in NIOSH method. Analysis of air samples was done by atomic absorption spectrophotometery (cold vapor). The data were analyzed by non-parametric tests (Kruskall Wallis, Mann-Whitney and Kendall).P<0.05 as the level of significance.

Results: The mean mercury vapor concentration in dentists’ offices was 8.39(±9.68) µg/m³.There was no significant relationship between the urine mercury of dentists (3.107±3.95) and the air Hg vapor concentration of their offices. Using precapsulated amalgam showed significantly less Hg vapor than bulk amalgam (P=0.034). Also the surface area of working room and air Hg vapor (P=0.009) had a significant relationship (P=0.009 r=0.81). There was not any significant correlation between mercury vapor and other factors such as working hours per day and working days per week, squeezing of triturated amalgam or not, storage medium of set amalgam (water or fixer solution), mercury storage method and type of ventilation.

Conclusion: The concentration of mercury vapor in dental offices' environment was lower than threshold limit value. Based on this study the type of amalgam (precapsulated or not) and area of the working room had significant effect on the mercury vapor concentration of environment.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Halogen lamp is the commonly used light source for composite photo polymerization. Recently, high power halogen lamps, LED and plasma arc are introduced for improving the polymerization. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of conventional and high power halogen lamps and LED light curing unit on degree of conversion of two different composite resins.

Materials and Methods: In this in vitro experimental study two halogen units (Coltolux 50 with the intensity of  330 mW/cm2 and Optilux 501 with two different operating modes of standard with the intensity of 820 mW/cm2 and Ramp with the intentsiy of 100-1030mW/cm2) and one LED light curing unit (620 mW/cm2) were used. The composites were hybrid (Tetric ceram) and nanofilled (Filteke supreme). Each materials/curing method contained three samples and degree of conversion (DC) was measured with FTIR. Data were analyzed statistically with one way and two way ANOVA, Tukey HSD. P<0.05 was considered as the limit of significance.

Results: Tetric ceram revealed higher DCthan Supreme. Tetric ceram showed a significant decrease in DC when Coltolux 50 was used in comparison to LED and Optilux 501. The latters did not show significant effect on DC of this material. DC of Supreme polymerized with various curing modes was not significantly different.

Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, degree of conversion in hybrid composites was higher than nanofilled. In comparison with conventional halogen lamp (Coltolux 50), high intensity halogen lamps and LED unit significantly lead to higher degree of conversion in hybrid composites.

Abstract

Background and Aims: In spite of the advances achieved in the field of dentin adhesives, the longevity of bond to dentin is still a challenge. According to recent studies, Matrix Metaloproteinase (MMP) inhibitors can increase clinical longevity of bonding and decrease leakage. The aim of this study was to evaluate the amount and pattern of doxycycline release from an experimental dentin adhesive containing this MMP inhibitor.

Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, specimens containing 0.25 and 0.5 loading percent of doxycycline in an experimental monomer were prepared in cylindrical moulds of 12 mm diameter and 2 mm thickness. The adhesive monomer was composed of 12 wt% Bis-GMA, 10 wt% TMPTMA, 28 wt% HEMA and 50 wt% ethanol. Camphorquinone and amine were used as initiators.

Results: Addition of 0.25 and 0.5 w% doxycycline showed linear release in both groups. Increasing the loading percent of doxycycline caused more release. The release continued during the test period.

Conclusion: Doxycycline release was observed from the experimental adhesive. Further studies in this field will help in preparing adhesive systems with more clinical longevity.

Abstract

Dentistry has been a field dominated by a constant improvement of synthetic biomaterials. Tissue engineering of tooth is coming to change the panel of the dental materials such as restorative materials and implants. Certainly, it is the largest transition in history of dental materials science in terms of accepting this new and exciting technology. The objective of this article is to present various implications of tissue engineering in different fields of dentistry. To achieve this goal, a review of the literature was carried out by using Medline database to search topics including "dental stem cells", "teeth tissue engineering", "regenerative dentistry", "oral surgery", "periodontal regeneration" and "regenerative endodontics". These searches were limited to articles published after the year 2000. On the basis of our literature review, we have found that although there are significant challenges in oral tissues engineering, engineered tissues will find many applications in dentistry within the next few years.

Abstract

Background and Aims: To evaluate the effect of polishing on surface roughness of silorane-based composite using profilometery and Scanning Election Microscopy (SEM) and compare it with that of a methylmethacrylate-based composite and a glass ionomer.

Materials and Methods: In this study, 3 groups (n=28) were tested: specimens of two composites (Filtek P90 and Filtek P60) and a glass ionomer (Fuji IX) which were prepared in polyethylene molds (4 mm diameter×10 mm height). Half of the specimens in each group were finished with 180-grit silicon carbide paper and the remaining were finished with 180-grit, and subsequently polished with 250, 400, 800, 1000, 2000, and 2500-grit silicon carbide papers. The surface roughness was evaluated using a contact profilometer and then mean (Ra) and maximum (Rmax) of surface roughness were recorded. Then, the surface of 4 specimens of each subgroup was observed under SEM. Statistical analysis was performed with T-test, ANOVA and Dunnett T3 tests.

Results: In all materials, Ra was different between polishing with 180 and 2500-grit silicon carbide papers. In 180-grit group, only Ra of Filtek P60 and Fuji IX showed significant difference (P=0.01). In 2500-grit group, there was no significant difference between the Ra of Filtek P60 and Filtek P90 (P=0.56).

Conclusion: Polishing is recommended for the glass ionomer and posterior composite restorations.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Polymerization shrinkage in Methacrylate-based composite is one of the most important factors in composite restorations failure. Silorane-based composite is introduced to compensate this drawback and claimed to have low shrinkage. The aim of this study was to evaluate the polymerization shrinkage of these two composites.

Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, 5 disk shape samples for each resin composites were placed in the centre of metallic ring bonded to microscopic glass slab. Top surface of ring was covered by a glass cover slip. Glass slab and sample were placed on a special LVDT holder in order to light cure from bottom surface and to measure the polymerization shrinkage. In this study, Deflecting Disk method and LVDT (linear variable differential transducer) was used for dimensional change measurement of resin composites. In this study, two LED curing units were used for composite polymerization.

Results: The mean of polymerization shrinkage in Z250 cured with LED and High Power LED was 11.15±0.08µm and 11.51±0.17µm, respectively (P=0.094), and in P90 cured with LED and High Power LED was 1.08±0.06µm and 1.16±0.12µm, respectively (P=0.019).

Conclusion: Silorane-based composite (P90) showed significantly less polymerization shrinkage than that of methacrylate-based composite (Z250). For the two types of composite, there was no significant difference between the two curing units in polymerization shrinkage.

Abstract

  Background and Aims: Until now, different types of scaffolds are presented for hard tissue engineering and the research continues to find the best scaffold. The aim of this study was to prepare scaffolds using two types of composite materials, ChitosanTriCalcium Phosphate (C/TCP) and ChitosanTriCalcium Phosphate/ Hydroxy apatite (C/TCP/ HA) and to add either 10% or 20% gelatin to compare their influence on swelling ratio of the scaffolds and on their affinities towards Dental Pulp Stem Cells (DPSCs).

  Materials and Methods: Composite scaffolds containing 10 or 20 percent of gelatin were prepared by freeze drying method. To determine the percentage of water absorption, swelling ratio studies were performed. Cell attachment and cell viability of the composite scaffolds were studied using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and MTT ( dimethyl-thiazol-diphenyltetrazolium bromide ) assay. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and Turkey’s post hoc test. A P-value of <0.05 was considered to be statistically significant.

  Results: The C/TCP scaffold and scaffolds containing 20% gelatin showed good swelling character. The macroporous composite scaffolds exhibited different pore structures. The biological response of DPS cells on C/TCP scaffold, C/TCP scaffold containing 20% gelatin, and C/TCP/HA scaffold was superior in terms of cell attachment, proliferation, and spreading compared to the other scaffolds (P<0.05).

  Conclusion: Considering the limitations of this in vitro studies, the results demonstrated that enhanced gelatin content in the C/TCP scaffolds do not improve initial cell adhesion and proliferation of the DPSCs on these scaffolds.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Despite the reduction of incidence of dental caries in recent years, this disease is common and many efforts were conducted to decrease the prevalence of dental caries. On the other hand secondary caries lesions are the main reason for replacement of direct restorations. Therefore, the aim of the current study was to evaluate suitable methods of preparation and restorative materials to reduce caries recurrence.

Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, eighty human teeth were collected and stored in normal saline. The teeth were soft-tissue debrided and cleaned with water/pumice slurry and rubber cups in a low-speed handpiece. Speciments were randomly divided in two main groups. Cavities were prepared with diamond burs or Er:YAG laser (10 Hz, 300 mJ, 3W). Each group was divided into 4 sub-groups, and restored with a glass-ionomer cement (Fuji IX), resin modified glass-ionomer (Fuji II LC), total etch bonding + composite resin or self-etch bonding + composite resin. The specimens were submitted to pH cycling. Speciments were then sectioned, polished and Vickers microhardness measurements were performed on each specimen. Differences among the medians were analyzed using two way ANOVA test at a 95% confidence level and Tukey test.

Results: Statistical analysis showed significant difference in the type of substrate (enamel, dentin) in both main groups (P<0.0001) but no differences in the caries lesion development between the cavities restored with the same material and prepared with diamond burs or Er:YAG laser.

Conclusion: The Er:YAG laser used for cavity preparation and different types of restorative materials used did not show the ability to guarantee significantly more acid-resistance tooth structure against demineralization.

Abstract

Background and Aims: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of two fluoride containing mouth rinses on the color stability of two different resin composites.
Materials and Methods: 27 specimens (2×4×5 mm) were prepared from each of the following materials: a micro filled composite (Gradia, GC) and nanohybrid (Grandio). The specimens were polished by Soflex fine and superfine disks and then incubated in artificial saliva at 37°C for 24 h. The baseline color values (L, a, b) of each specimen were measured using an Easyshade spectrophotometer according to the CIELab color scale. The specimens were immersed in 20 mL of each mouth rinse and stored in an incubator at 37°C for 12 h. After incubation, the color values of all specimens were measured again, and the color change value (ΔE) was calculated. Data were analyzed by a 2-way analysis of variance at a significance level of 0.05.
Results: None of the mouth rinses created clinical significant color changes in the samples. There was no statistically significant difference among color susceptibility between resin composites (P=0.330). The interaction between the effect of mouth rinses and type of restorative materials was not statistically significant (P>0.05).
Conclusion: Accordance to the results of this study, the fluoride containing mouth rinses does not create color change in resin composites.

Abstract

Background and Aims: According to many uses of MTA in different treatments, studying about its properties like the setting time, is of great importance. The aim of this study was to compare the initial and final setting time of an Iranian MTA and a foreign MTA.
Materials and Methods: Seven samples were in each group; for measurement of initial and final setting time of MTAs, a mold with dimension of 2×10 mm was prepared. The cements after mixation were put into an incubator with temperature of 37C and humidity of 90%. After mixing of cements, a Gilmore needle with a weight of 100 gr and active tip of 2 mm was used vertically on the surface of MTA for measurement of the initial setting time. Setting was measured by the start of cement mixation to the time the tip of the needle didn’t penetrate to the surface of MTA. For measurement of the final setting time a Gilmore needle with a weight of 456 gr and active tip of 1mm was used vertically on the surface of MTA. The ANOVA test followed by Tukey test was used for comparison of the mean setting time between an Iranian and foreign MTA. The statistical difference was considered significant at the level of 0.05.
Resultes: The mean initial setting time Angelus and Root MTAs were 13.57±0.91 and 11.14±0.92 min, the mean final setting of Angelus and Root MTA, were 48.93±1.54 and 37.86±1.5 min while the initial setting time of Angelus MTA lasted for 0.53±43.2 more min than Root MTA (P=0.001). The final setting time of Angelus MTA took longer for 110.7±0.82 min than Root MTA (P=0.001).
Conclusion: The initial and final setting time of the Iranian MTA was shorter than the foreign one and thus it could a more alternative option in this respect.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Color is the most important and complicated part of aesthetic dentistry. The tooth color matching of restorations is considered as one of the most difficult tasks in the restorative dentistry. The aim of this study to evaluate the effect of two training methods on the dental students’ ability in determining tooth color matching.
Materials and Methods: In this study, 40 dentistry students participated which randomly allocated into two groups. The first group consisted of students who learned teeth color matching methods practically. In the second group, training booklet was used for learning. Using Vita Classic shade guide series, 4 color samples were chosen and the students of each group were asked to determine samples’ color, before, after and one month after the training.
Results: Booklet learning group was more successful in determining fourth color sample. However, in no studied group and no used samples, the results of one month after learning were not better than that of before learning. Also generally, no significant relationship was found between the color matching accuracy, using glasses, and sex of participants.
Conclusion: The use of booklet learning was more effective than practical learning in color matching accuracy for dental students. Also, using glasses and sex were not effective on their color matching accuracy.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA) is an important infection source in dentistry for different disinfectants to be used to prevent its transmission. Furthermore, a variety of chemical disinfectants are developed to remove bacterial infections from the dental care workers' hands and claims are made regarding their superiority in infection control, although all requires scientific investigations. The aim of present study was to compare the effects of chemical hand-disinfectants Micro Zed HD, Aseptoman and Decosept on MRSA (methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus) in different periods of time.
Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, the antibacterial efficacy of three hand-disinfectants on standard strain of MRSA (USA300: ATCC® BAA-1717™) was evaluated according to European standard of evaluating antiseptics (EN 1040:2005 CSN EN). First we prepared a 0.5 Mc Farland (108 CFU/ml) suspension of MRSA, and exposed to three disinfectants for 15, 30, 60 and 90 seconds. Then, they were transferred to separate plates of Mueller-Hinton medium and incubated in 37C for 24 hours. The plates were compared then with control plate to evaluate the efficacy of materials on bacteria by calculating the CFU/ml of plates.
Results: Three hand-disinfectants evaluated in this study had the maximum anticabterial effect on MRSA in the minimum time of exposure (15 seconds), and we found no trace of growth in any plates.
Conclusion: The three hand-disinfectans (MicroZed HD, Aseptoman and Decosept) in the concentration suggested by their companies, showed no difference in efficacy to remove MRSA from hands.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Oral health literacy plays an important role in reducing oral health disparities. Evaluation of oral health literacy can be done at individual and population levels. This study was conducted with the aim of investigating oral health literacy among students of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences in 2023.
Materials and Methods: This study was descriptive, applied and cross-sectional. The research population included the students of different academic levels of Shiraz University of Medical Sciences, except the final semester students. The sample size was calculated based on the total number of students studying at different levels at Shiraz University of Medical Sciences in the second half of the academic year in 2023 using an appropriate statistical formula. Sampling was done in a stratified-random manner according to faculty, field, and level of education. The oral health literacy of the participants based on education level, age, and gender was measured by the oral health literacy adult questionnaire (OHL Adults Questionnaire: OHL-AQ). Data analysis was done using SPSS 27 software and descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation, percentage), independent t-test, Kruskal-Wallis, and Tukey test.
Results: The findings indicated that the average oral health literacy score of students was 14.75±1.37. Also, there was a statistically significant relationship between the average oral health literacy score of students and the parameters of education level, gender, and age of students (P-value < 0.05). This indictaed that the oral health literacy of students increased in the doctoral level and also with increasing age. In addition, the female students had higher oral health literacy.
Conclusion: Based on the results, the oral health literacy among Shiraz medical students was high. People with higher education level and age had higher level of oral and dental health literacy than people with lower education level and age. Oral and dental health literacy level was higher in girls than boys. It can be suggested that a 1) suitable platform be provided in order to improve the level of education of the society, leading to the improvement of the oral health literacy of the people; 2) regular dental examinations in order to increase the oral health literacy of the society is encouraged and promoted, especially in lower year students; and 3) research in effective training in the field of oral health literacy to increase the oral health literacy of people in the society.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Student perspectives play a crucial role in evaluating educational systems. This study assessed the self-efficacy of dental students at Yazd Dental School in diagnosing and managing oral and maxillofacial pathological lesions.
Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among dental students from semesters 6 to 12. A total of 250 self-efficacy questionnaires, designed to evaluate students' abilities in lesion management, were distributed. The questionnaire covered biopsy procedures, differential diagnosis, and treatment planning. Data were collected using structured self-reporting methods and analyzed through SPSS version 16, employing descriptive and inferential statistics, including chi-square tests. The semester progression, gender, age, academic performance, and marital status were examined for their impact on self-efficacy. According to the mean and standard deviation obtained in this study, the scores were divided qualitatively.
Results: The response rate of the questionnaire was 91.6%. The average self-efficacy score was 80.30±14.72 (out of 150), indicating a moderate level of confidence. Performing biopsies had the lowest self-efficacy, while diagnosing and managing oral ulcers had the highest. Higher-semester students showed significantly greater self-efficacy (P=0.018), whereas variations based on gender, age, academic performance, and marital status were not statistically significant (P>0.05). Increased exposure to the clinical cases and theoretical knowledge contributed to a growth in self-efficacy over time.
Conclusion: Overall, the students demonstrated moderate self-efficacy in lesion management. Higher-semester students benefited from accumulated experience, though specific areas, such as biopsy procedures and lesion diagnosis, which require further emphasis. Future strategies should enhance teaching methods, clinical practice opportunities, and assessment approaches to prepare students for the practical challenges they will face.
