Abstract

Nucleolar organizer regions (NORs) are loops of rDNA, which in human, occur on the short arms of five acrocentric chromosomes, namely, 13, 14, 15, 21 and 22. NORs are usually demonstrated by binding If their associated proteins (NORAPsO to silver (Ag+) ions. The reaction is called AgNORs. It has been determined that, the number and the size of NORs is related to the proliferative activity and grade of malignancy. This has led to the application of AgNOR method to a wide range of diagnostic problem cases, including breast, salivary glands and lung malignant neoplasms.The purpose of this study was to determine the value of AgNOR method in assessment of the grade of malignancy in non- Hodgkin's lymphoma of head & neck, which often is difficult and essentially important in relation to the prognosis and treatment.41 cases of paraffin embedded specimens of NHL, which were classified by working formulation system,were selected and then AgNORs method was applied on them.AgNORs were enumerated for all 41 cases of NHL (Standard Crocker).The mean AgNORs in 11 cases of low grade 15 cases of intermediate grade and 15 cases of high grade NHL was 1.66 (SEM= 0.098), 2.25 (SEM= 0.084) and 5.19 (SEM= 0.11), respectively.In analysis of variance and multiple comparisons, a significant difference was found between the three groups of NHL (P<0.000I).It is concluded that the AgNORs, as a reliable method, could be used in differentiation of low,intermediate and high grade NHL in head and neck area.

Abstract

Recently. Minalux alloy, a base metal free from Be, has been presented on the market while no special soldering has been recommended for it. On the other hand, based on the manufacturer's claim, this alloy is similar to Verabond2. The aim of this study was to investigate the tensile strength of Minalux and Verabond2, soldered by Verasolder. Twelve standard dambble shape samples, with the length of 18 mm and the diameter of 3mm, were prepared from each alloy. Six samples of each alloy were divided into two pieces with carboradom disk. Soldering gap distance was 0.3mm, measured by a special jig and they were soldered by Verasolder alloy. Six other samples, of both Iranian and foreign unsoldered alloys were considered as control group. Then samples were examined under tensile force and their tensile strength was recorded. Two- way variance analysis showed that the tensile strength of Minalux alloy and Verabond2 were not statistically significant (Verasoler 686, Minalux 723), but after soldering, such difference became significant (Minalux 308, Verabond2 432). Verabond2 showed higher tensile strength after soldering.

Abstract

Statement of Problem:Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a common oral disorder that despite extensive researches, the etiology of this phenomenon is still unknown. Because this phenomenon has been observed more often in families than in individual cases, genetic influence has been investigated in most researches.
Purpose: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the association between Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) and aphthous stomatitis more precisely.
Materials and Methods: in this study, 60 patients with RAS were examined for HLA-A and HLA- B types and 37 of them were examined for HLA- DR and HLA-DQ types. The results were compared through Fisher test with those of 25 healthy control subjects, aged more than 30 years.
Results: A significant decrease in the frequency of some antigens such as HLA-DQW 3 and HLA-A 26 in subjects with RAS was observed. Therefore, according to the results of this study, these antigens were considered as resistant antigens to recurrent aphthous stomatitis. In contrast, there was no significant increase in the frequency of any HLA antigens in the test group, compared to the control group. This finding is in contrast with the multiple reports about Behcet's disease. (Because a high frequency of HLA-B 51 has been
found in Behcet's syndrome.)

Conclusion: According to the findings of this study, it is suggested that the pathogenicity of aphthous ulcerations in Behcet's disease and recurrent aphthous stomatitis is not the same. However, further studies are necessary to prove this theory.

Abstract

Statement of Problem: Hyperlipidemia is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease. In recent years some evidence has been presented regarding the association between periodontal and cardiovascular diseases.

Purpose: The aim of this study was the evaluation of association between hyperlipidemia and periodontitis.

Materials and Methods: In this case-control study, levels of plasma lipids in 40 subjects with periodontitis (CPITN score III or IV) were measured and compared with 40 age and sex matched controls. Data were analyzed using t-student test with P<0.05 as the limit of significance.

Results: Total cholesterol (CHL) and triglyceride (TG) were significantly higher in case group compared with control group. (P=0.045 and P=0.016 respectively). HDL and LDL cholesterols were higher in cases but showed no significant differences with controls. The relative frequency of pathologic values of CHL and TG were significantly greater in cases compared with control group (P=0.005 and P=0.001 respectively).

Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, hyperlipidemia may be associated with periodontitis in medically healthy peoples but whether periodontitis causes an increase in levels of serum lipids or whether hyperlipidemia is a risk factor for both periodontitis and cardiovascular disease need to be further investigated.

Abstract

Background and Aims: The bond strength between veneer ceramics and zirconia frameworks is the weakest component in the layered ceramics. Due to the possible effect of adding pigments to the core materials on the bond strength between core and veneer as well as the introduction of new ceramic materials in dentistry, the aim of this study was to compare the zirconia core-veneer microtensile bond strength using two ceramic veneers with or without coloring the core.
Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, 12 disc-shaped specimens were fabricated using a manually aided design- manually aided manufactured (MAD/MAM) zirconia core (Zirkonzahn). Two veneering ceramics of Ceram Kiss and Zirkonzahn ICE were also used to veneer the specimens. Half of the Zirkonzahn discs were remained white and the others were colored by shade A2.Then, the discs were cut into microbars (30 for each group) and the microtensile bond strength of the core-veneer was calculated. The specimens were assessed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and the data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Student's t-test.
Results: Significant differences with respect to veneer layer were found (P<0.001). No significant differences were seen among colored and uncolored cores (P=0.69).
Conclusion: According to the apparent effect of veneering ceramics on the core-veneer bond strength, careful selection of these agents is essential to achieve adequate bond strength between core and veneer to prevent delaminating and chipping failures of zirconia veneered restorations.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Disc displacement is the most common temporomandibular joint disorder and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is the gold standard in its diagnosis. This disorder can lead to changes in signal intensity of magnetic resonance (MR). The purpose of this study was evaluation of correlation between relative signal intensity of MR images of retrodiscal tissue, superior and inferior head of lateral ptrygoid muscle with type of anterior disk displacement and condylar head flattening in patients with temporomandibular disorder (TMD).

Materials and Methods: In this retrospective study, 31 MR images of patients who had anterior disc displacement were evaluated. After relative signal intensity measurement for retrodiscal tissue, superior and inferior head of lateral ptrygoid muscle, the correlation between relative signal intensity and type of anterior disc displacement was evaluated with repeated measure ANOVA test. In each of these 3 areas, t-test was used to compare the groups with and without condylar head flattening.

Results: The correlation between relative signal intensity of MR images and type of anterior disc displacement in retrodiscal tissue, superior and inferior head of lateral ptrygoid muscle was not significant. There was also no statistically significant correlation between relative signal intensity of MR images and flattening of condylar head in retrodiscal tissue, superior and inferior head of lateral ptrygoid muscle (P>0.05).

Conclusion: According to findings of this study, relative signal intensity of MR images in retrodiscal tissue, superior and inferior head of ptrygoid muscle is not a good predictor for type of anterior disc displacement and flattening of condylar head. It seems that this cannot be used as a diagnostic marker for TMD progression.

Abstract

  Background and Aims: There is a risk of nerve injury during the extraction of the impacted third molars, in cases with proximity of the inferior alveolar nerve and this tooth. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of different various factors on the degree of vulnerability using CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) imaging technique.

  Materials and Methods: CBCT images of 191 patients referred for the exact assessment of the relationship between the mandibular canal and impacted mandibular third molars were selected. The position of these anatomical structures was evaluated at their contact point. The possible effect of gender, impaction form of the third molars, anatomical relationship between the third molars and the mandibular canal and the age differences were studied. Data were analyzed using Chi-square and Student’s t-test.

  Results: There was a close relationship between the mandibular canal and impacted third molars in 81.7% of the patients. The contacts were shown to be significantly higher in females than males (P=0.01) and in the cases with the lingually position of the third molar and the mandibular canal (P<0.001). However, the age and impaction form of the teeth did not have a significant influence (P>0.05).

  Conclusion: The risk of nerve damage or exposure is increased in females and lingual position of the mandibular canal to the third molar in cases with higher proximity between these 2 structures in panoramic radiographs using CBCT images. Therefore, the surgeon must pay enough attention in these cases of third molar extraction.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Bacteria and their products have a major role in pulp and periapical diseases. The purpose of this study was to compare the antimicrobial activity of sodium hypochlorite, iodide potassium iodide and chlorhexidine on the enterococcus faecalis after root canal filling.

Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, 95 single canal human teeth were collected. Then after washing and cleaning and filing, the sterilization done using an autoclave. The teeth were smeared with enterococcus faecalis except five which selected as controls and then divided them into 3 groups which A randomly represented the irrigation by sodium hypochlorite, iodide potassium iodide (IKI) and chlorhexidine solution were done. The teeth were filled with gutta-percha and then incubated in a incubator for 90 days at a temperature of 37° C. The specimens were analyzed for Colony Count. Data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis test and Chi-Square.

Results: According to the results of this study, the correlation between the 3 groups of cultured teeth were not significant (P=0.812).The specimens which were washed by IKI had the most positive amount of cultures (23.3%) and the specimens which washed by chlorhexidine had the lowest (16.7%).

Conclusion: The results of this study showed that after the use of different wash solutions, no statistically significant difference exist in their antimicrobial activity after root canal therapy.
