Abstract

Background and Aims: There is a lot of burnout and stresses in various ways of people’s lives which could result in psychological pressure, negative emotions, confusion, worry, and anxiety. Therefore, emotion cognitive regulation can play an important role in coping with burnout and adapting to stressful life events. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the emotional cognitive regulation strategies and burnout in dentists in Ilam.
Materials and Methods: The method of the present study was descriptive and correlational. The statistical population included all dentists in Ilam in 2019. By simple random sampling method, 81 dentists in Ilam were selected as sample. The research instruments included the Emotional Cognitive Regulation Questionnaire (CERQ-P) and the Employee Burnout Questionnaire (MBI). Data were analyzed by SPSS 22 software at the level of descriptive statistics by mean and standard deviation indices, and at the inferential level by Pearson correlation coefficient test.
Results: The results showed that there was a significant negative and inverse relationship between the adaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies and burnout in dentists
(r=-0.862, P<0.000). There was also a significant positive and direct relationship between the maladaptive emotional cognitive regulation strategies and burnout in dentists (r=0.829, P<0.000).
Conclusion: According to the results of this study, it seems that dentists should pay more attention to the components of emotion regulation and emotions in order to prevent and reduce job burnout.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Although dental implants have become a successful and predictable ong-term treatment for patients, not all implant treatments are necessarily successful and pre-implant diseases are spreading. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of peri-implantitis in patients one year after prosthetic loading in Khorramabad in 2021.
Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 53 patients who had implants and undergone prosthetic loading for one year were studied. In each of the 53 patients, the probing depth (PD) and bleeding during probing (BOP) around the implant and the characteristics of the surrounding soft tissue, including gingival redness and tissue sensitivity were evaluated and recorded. To assess the bone level or possible bone resorption, a P.A. graph was taken from the patient using a parallel technique. Information such as demographic characteristics and specialized information about the disease were collected through a checklist. Data were collected using SPSS22 software. Frequency tables and chi-square and t-tests were used to analyze the data.
Results: The mean age of patients participating in the present study was 46.5±10.63 years. The number of women was 33 (62.3%). The prevalence of peri-implantitis was 17% at the patient level and 9.3% at the implant unit level. There was a significant relationship between the age (P<0.03) and systemic disease (P<0.03) with the prevalence of peri-implantitis. However, there was no statistically significant relationship between the prevalence of peri-implantitis and other demographic variables (P<0.05).
Conclusion: The results of the present study showed that the prevalence of peri-implantitis was higher in people with a higher mean age. In addition, systemic diseases are a protective factor for peri-implantitis.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Nowadays, the best choice for replacing missing teeth are dental implants, however, failure is not unexpected. One of the factors that plays an important role in the implant failure is bacterial microleakage which could cause biological complication. The aim of this study was to compare the bacterial microleakage between the two types of implants.
Materials and Methods: In the present interventional study, SPI and Dentis implants were placed bilaterally in the premolar-molar area of the patients' mandible. One day and 14 days after the delivery of the crown, by removing the crown and removing the abutment, sampling was performed using a sterile paper cone from four areas. One day after sample culturing, the number of colonies was counted. All data were entered into SPSS 23 and were analyzed using independent samples t-test and paired t-test with a significance level of 0.05.
Results: The amount of bacteria in implant sulcus was significantly different between the two types of implants (P=0.003). After 14 days, the amount of bacteria in SPI implant sulcus significantly decreased more than Dentis implant sulcus (P=0.001). After 14 days, the amount of bacteria also decreased in all other areas which there were no significant difference between the two types of implants (P>0.05).

Abstract

Background and Aims: Dry socket is one of the most common post-tooth-extraction complications. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between some of the predisposing factors of dry socket and this complication in all maxillary and mandibular molars and evaluation of its incidence. Furthermore, the two jaws were compared.
Materials and Methods: In this descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study, 150 patients were examined in 2020 in the city of Zahedan. A questionnaire consisting of two sections was designed: In the first section age, gender, systemic disease, smoking status, contraceptive pill consumption, and antibiotic consumption were investigated. In the second section, data related to the difficulty of surgery based on the duration of surgery and the number of local anesthetic cartridges that were administered were collected. Then, the collected data were analyzed by Chi-square and Kruskal-Wallis tests.
Results: The incidence of dry socket was 25.3%. The frequency of dry socket was significantly relevant to smoking, oral contraceptive consumption, difficulty of the surgery, and the number of local anesthetic cartridges that were administered (P≤0.05). Age, gender, controlled systemic disorder, and systemic antibiotic usage for two weeks prior to surgery revealed no significant associations with dry socket (P>0.05). Furthermore, the frequency of dry socket in maxillary and mandibular jaws had a significant difference according to smoking status, difficulty of surgery, and number of local anesthetics carpules (P≤0.05).
Conclusion: It is recommended to identify high-risk groups when performing extraction to consider pre-operative and post-operative measures in order to reduce postoperative complications.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Considering the prevalence of periodontal disease in Iranian adults and its impact on general health and the role of medical practitioners, the purpose of the present study was to determine physician’s knowledge and attitude towards periodontal health.
Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Tehran in 2019 and after getting informed consent, a valid and reliable questionnaire was provided to medical practitioners in a continuing education course. Data were analyzed using the SPSS26 software.
Results: In total 170 subjects (response rate=95%) responded. The mean scores of knowledge and attitude towards periodontal health were 4.1 (maximum score of 6) and 51.9 (maximum score of 65), respectively. Work experience (P=0.022) and period of time after graduation (P=0.007) had a positive and significant relationship with participants' knowledge. Also, gender (P=0.012), work experience (P=0.002), period after graduation (P=0.005) and practitioner’s workplace (P=0.001) were significantly associated with their attitudes. The results showed that women had a better attitude towards prevention of gum disease.
Conclusion: In the present study, medical practitioners’ knowledge was good towards description of healthy periodontium and the first sign of periodontal diseas. Also, their attitudes regarding the importance of oral and dental diseases and its impact on social activities were appropriate. The results of the present study showed more emphasis is needed on delivering relevant dental education in medical curriculum.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Oral bacteria play an important role in oral diseases, due to their high adaptability to different environmental areas of the mouth. In this article, an attempt was made to describe the molecular mechanisms involved in the physiological relationships of oral and dental environment bacteria and their pathogenic significance with molecular approaches.
Materials and Methods: The present systematic review was written based on the advanced and standard search of keywords including Oral bacteria, Biofilm, and Dental diseases in PubMed, Springer, Scopus, Medline, Google Scholar, Science Direct, and Web of Science databases. For this purpose, an advanced and systematic search of articles published from 1993 to 2023 was conducted to compile the present article.
Results: Bacteria in the oral cavity have nutritional adaptations that are important for living in pathogen-host relationships, including adapting to proteolytic living conditions, using the host's glycome as a nutritional interface. This includes the use of host-derived sialic acid and other glycosidases in oral bacteria. Some of these bacteria adhere to surfaces such as salivary, epithelial proteins, and glycans, which ultimately lead to biofilm formation. Bacteria living in the oral environment are constantly exposed to a wide range of stress-causing factors and oxidative stress in the biofilm.
Conclusion: Dental caries, pulp, periapical, and periodontitis diseases (including gingivitis) are among the most common bacterial diseases. Among them, tooth decay caused by the presence of Streptococcus mutans is the most common dental disease due to the production of acids from carbohydrate fermentation which is characterized by the demineralization of tooth structure.

Abstract

Background and Aims: The present investigation was conducted on the evaluation of the microstructure, phase transformation behavior, mechanical properties, and fatigue resistance of nickel-titanium rotary endodontic files. The main purpose of this investigation was to find the effect of microstructural parameters on the performance of these files.
Materials and Methods: Three rotary tools with brand names Denco, Edgeendo, and Eighteeth were studied. To evaluate the microstructure and transformation behavior of tools, metallography, X-ray diffraction, and differential scanning calorimetry methods were used. The bending test was used to check the behavior of superelasticity and memory and the microhardness test was used to evaluate the hardness of the samples. Also, cyclic fatigue behavior in a mold containing a simulated tooth canal was investigated and calculated by parametric statistical analysis. The fracture surface of the samples was also studied by scanning electron microscope.
Results: Analyses revealed the existence of a high volume fraction of R phase in the microstructure of the Edgeendo file. Rotary files with higher volume fraction of martensitic phase showed higher shape memory effect and fatigue resistance. Denco and Edgeendo rotary files with better surface quality and high volume fraction of martensitic phases in the microstructure showed better fatigue resistance compared with the Eighteeth file. In all the results, the P-value was less than 0.05.
Conclusion: Multiphase microstructure containing austenite and martensite together with appropriate phase transformation and hardness of the alloy have key roles on functional properties of rotary files. This study provides dentists with a deeper understanding of the fatigue behavior and mechanical properties of these files, enabling them to make more informed decisions in choosing the appropriate instruments for endodontic treatment.
