Abstract

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE AR-SA To divide the face into three parts, the "upper face" is located superior to the zygomaticofrontal and frontonasal and maxillonasal sutures.  "Mid face" is between those sutures in upper limit and incisal edge of maxillary teeth in lower limit (for edentulous patients, alveolar process of maxilla is considered instead).  Mandibular bone which is basically a long-tubular bone forms"lower Face".

Abstract

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE AR-SA The term "Premature contact" in dentistry and especially in Orthodontics represents sudden contact of a point in one or more teeth with an area of one or more opposing teeth in occlusion or during articulation prior to any contact between the other teeth. These teeth are generally bearing imbalanced and undesirable pressures that make them prone to complications .The wide range of lesions can be manifested as local and centralized or scattered and referral that can damage adjacent organs. As premature contact is a damaging factor that can lead to dentomandibular disorders, it is essential to be followed carefully. In a research on 93 patients selected from 228 of private office referral patients, points were found that consequently led us to a better introduction to this problematic Factor.

Abstract

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE AR-SA Mercury has been used in amalgam restorations for more than a century though it is poisonous and mercury vapor can endanger the health of patients and dental office staff. Therefore, they should be aware of its hazards and observe guidelines to prevent injury to nervous system, heart, kidneys, alimentary and respiratory systems. The source of mercury poisoning in dental offices can be of stored mercury, evaporation while mixing, inserting, condensing, carving, burnishing or polishing the amalgam , amalgam residuals, poisoning while replacing old amalgam restorations or while steriling the instruments. In any case, we can state that although the amount of mercury released from amalgam compared to the mercury in the environment is negligible but the dental staff who work with mercury should observe the safety guidelines.

Abstract

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE AR-SA In this study, 4 species of Glaucium (Corniculatum, Elegans, Flavum and fimberiligerm) was used and their root, stem, flower, leaf and seeds were dried and grinded. Then, the extract was made by adding ethanol, methanol and water. By using sterile swab, oral microbial flora of 10000 patients were taken and cultivated on different agar cultures. The microbial strains involved: streptococci, bacillus, actinomycetes, diphteroids, lactobacillus and candida. Antimicrobial effect was evaluated in various media by measuring the diameter of microbial zone and compare with control group. The antimicrobial effect of the studied species on total count of oral microbial flora and also on each bacterial species was recorded.  Acetyl pyridinum chloride was used in control group. The amount of absorbed extract was 1.25 mg in each blank disc. The different concentrations of 1.25, 2.5, 5 and 10 were prepared and analyzed. The results showed all 4 species had antimicrobial effect and the least effective concentration was 2.5%. The Elegans specie was more effective than the others. Muler-Hinton medium was the most suitable media among the others. The extracts of ethanol, methanol, water and autoclaved showed the most to the least antimicrobial effect respectively.  The antimicrobial effect was related to the specific oral microflora of every individual. Streptococci were the most sensitive while bacillus was the least sensitive bacteria to the extract.

Abstract

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE AR-SA Identifying the shades is difficult and needs not only the science but also the art. In order to match and coordinate the shades, distinguishing them is essential. As well as hue, chroma and value, Maverick stains are also considered. Various factors effect color perception such as the difference between the eyes' vision, age, drugs and psychology of the colors. Surface texture is considerably important in adjusting teeth color. Color is the light reflected from teeth structures and is accompanied with scattered photons. Thus, to achieve exact and acceptable results, it is better to use light sources with wide light emission field.

Abstract

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE AR-SA In recent years, Medical science has been developed remarkably in treatment of malignant diseases. New treatment modalities, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and immunotherapy in patients with different types of neoplasm have cured some cases and increased their life long. On the other hand, considerable complications have also been developed for both patients and clinicians. Viral infections of oral cavity in patients receiving chemotherapy is ignored in most cases. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate viral infections in hospitalized patients receiving chemotherapy in Hematology department of Amiralam and Imam Khomeini Hospitals. On this account 84 patients with leukemia (AML,ALL, CML, CLL) and lymphoma ( hochkin and non hochkin) who were in immunosuppression phase after chemotherapy were evaluated in 3 months. Lower incidence of viral infections in comparison to the results of other countries were obtained.

Abstract

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE AR-SA There has been many efforts to use antimicrobial agents in order to control microbes causing periodontal diseases since they play an integral role in the etiology of periodontal diseases. Chlorhexidine is a ADA approved antimicrobial and antiplaque mouthwash that is used to treat gingivitis. It acts by intense adhesion to the most sites of the oral cavity and is slowly released providing a long-lasting bactericidal environment that can result in lower plaque formation. Therefore, The risk of gingivitis and periodontal disease would be declined.

Abstract

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE AR-SA Non-removable Keratotic lesions are relatively prevalent in various types in oral mucosa. The treatment modality is often problematic and is done by using  various specific regimens. Bleomycin was used in two primary studies with limited number of patients (N=9) . In current survey, more patients were recruited in a longer period of study. In fact, 50 leukoplakia and lichen planus patients were treated by local administration of belomycin  in a 21 months follow-up period. Statistical analysis was done by using Kaplan meier and cox Regression methods. The obtained results showed that belomycin can remove many of these lesions and can prevent both chronic pattern and malignant changes of the lesions. As In 9 cases of leukoplakia, 2 cases of recurrence were recorded. According to statistical analysis, in case of complete treatment up to 11 months , the recurrence  would not be possible. In 41 cases of lichen planus, recurrence rate was higher and after  a longer period (17 months ) following complete treatment, recurrence was totally eliminated. In fact, Recurrence can be due to psychological conditions. To conclude, local administration of Bleomycin is recommended to use to treat Oral  keratotic lesions and can act successfully based on current study's findings.

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE AR-SA Although a full denture cab  replace the teeth and their supporting structures , it commonly develops temporary speech problems that are resolved after a while. In this study, 70 patients were recruited from Prosthodontics department of Tehran and Isfahan dental schools. The patients were analyzed via special questionnaires and oral interview by gender, previous prosthesis and  in 3 phases of edentulous, immediately after denture delivery and a week after delivery. Following data gathering and statistical analysis, it was found that "sh", "s"," Ch" sounds are the most and " m" is the least difficult sound to  pronounce. The study results showed significant difference between 3 stages of denture usage. Also, the effect of previous prosthesis on speech was concluded while gender had not any relation with speech problems.

Abstract

Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE AR-SA As special microbial species are identified as etiologic factors for periodontal diseases and since conventional periodontal treatments could not eliminate these factors, Using Antimicrobial agents as alternatives to prevent  post operation  infections seems essential. In This study Phenytoin (Gel 10%) was used as an topical antimicrobial agent in periodontal surgeries. 21 patients with advanced periodontal disease were selected. Sampling was carried out before and after the surgery. The results showed that phenytoin can act effectively on gram positive and negative cocci while this concentration was not effective to eliminate opportunistic gram negative bacilli.
