Abstract
Background and Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of sodium bicarbonate against candida albicans, the main infectious factor of denture stomatitis, and to compare it with other common anti-candida medications.
Materials and Methods: Three concentrations of Candida albicans (105, 106, 107 CFU/mL) were prepared. Experimental substances were 5% sodium bicarbonate, nystatin, chlorhexidine, and sterile saline (as control). Each of them was added separately to the same amounts of Candida albicans of different concentrations, and sampled at the intervals of 1, 2, 3 and 4 min. Then, the samples were cultured and incubated. The number of formed colonies was counted for each plate. The data were analyzed, using ANOVA and Tukey test.
Results: Sodium bicarbonate showed a noticeable anti-candida effect on the concentrations of 105 and 106 CFU/mL, with almost similar anti-candida effect as nystatin and chlorehexidine(P=0.29, P=0.32). Nystatin was the most effective medication on the concentration of 107 CFU/mL of candida (P=0.03, P=0.01). Sodium bicarbonate and chlorhexidine were less effective in this concentration with no statistically significant difference (P=1.00).
Conclusion: Sodium bicarbonate showed a significant anti-candida effect at low and medium concentrations of Candida albicans, but nystatin was more effective in the higher concentrations.

Abstract
Background and Aims: The objective of this study was the development of a checklist for assessment of students’ clinical skills in the clinical oral medicine. The second aim was the assessment of stake holders’ satisfaction of this checklist in comparison to the routine global rating method.
Materials and Methods: The checklist was developed in an expert panel sessions and the validity and reliability of checklist were assessed by CVI and test-retest method, respectively. All students (n=66) were assessed in 2 groups, one with developed checklist and another with global rating. At the end of the session, the satisfaction’s level of staff and students were analysized using Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney test and the mean scores of students were analysized using Paired T test.
Results: Content validity index (CV I) of checklist was 0.88. Reliability of checklist confirmed with high correlation coefficient (0.9). Staffs’ satisfaction had no significant difference between the two methods
(Wilcoxon P=0.06). The mean score of students who assessed by checklist was higher than global rating with no significant differences (P=0.06).
Conclusion: Regarding the higher students’ satisfaction from checklist and more attention to component of assessment and more objectivity of this method and also higher score in checklist, it seems that the use of a checklist is more proper method for assessing the students’ clinical skills.

Abstract
Background and Aims: In the field of orthodontics, gaining comprehensive information around dento-skeletal complex is necessary to choose the best treatment plan for each patient. The aim of this study was to investigate the linear and angular parameters in panoramic radiographs to find a path to correlate transvers to sagittal dimensions.
Materials and Methods: Total number of sixty two, 8-14 years old children who sought for orthodontic therapy were selected (32 skeletal Class III and 30 skeletal Class I). They were exposed to x-ray to obtain the panoramic and lateral views in a controlled condition. Various linear and angular parameters were measured after tracing the landmarks on the panoramic radiograph. Data were obtained and analyzed using T-test. The level of significance was set at 0.05 (P<0.05).
Results: Linear parameters of Co-Co, Go-Go and PTM-PTM were significantly lower in class III patients than class I ones (P=0.04, 0.04, 0.02, respectively). The ramus width value was also lower in class III patients. Angular parameters of Me˄ and N˄ also showed the same results (P<0.001). Go˄ angle was significantly lower in the class I than class III patients (P=0.002, 0.007).
Conclusion: Some traceable linear and angular parameters were found in the panoramic radiographs which had the potential to correlate the transverse with sagittal dimension.

Abstract
Background and Aims: In recent years, dental implants have received special attention in dentistry. Due to the remarkable success of predictable dental implants, there is growing interests in the scientific community from descriptions of implant success toward identify factors associated with implant failure. The purpose of this study was to identify the risk factors associated with implant failure in an objective and statistically valid manner.
Materials and Methods: To address the research purposes, we used a cohort study in which a total of 2368 implants were placed on 1011 patient in the Clinic of Tehran University of Medical Sciences. The predictor variables included demographic variables, the health status and variables are related to implants. The outcome variable of interest was implant failure. The overall implant survival was estimated using the Kaplan-Meier analysis. First, risk factors were identified using Chi-square test and Fisher's exact test and then the Cox proportional hazard regression models were used for more analysis.
Results: The overall 39 month implant survival using the Kaplan-Meier function was 0.99±0.002. The implant location (jaws) (P=0.049) and type of teeth (P=0.011) were found to have significant relation with failure times in Cox proportional hazard model.
Conclusion: According to result of this study, both implant location and type of teeth had effection the failure times so that, the survival in mandible was higher than maxilla. The failure rate was higher in anterior teeth than that of others (molar, premolar, canine and primary).

Abstract
Background and Aims: For the clinical success of implant-retained prostheses, fitness of matching components and stability of the applied torque to the implant-abutment assembly under dynamic occlusal loading is essential. The aim of this study was to evaluate the torque loss in Co-Cr castable abutments after cyclic loading.
Materials and Methods: 10 castable abutments were cast in Co-Cr alloy with similar size and height. Each specimen was mounted vertically on a separated implant using a 30 Ncm tightening torque. The detorque values of the abutments were evaluated after 10 min. The same tightening torque was applied to the abutments on their corresponding implants and cyclic loading was applied for 500,000 cycles to the implant-abutment assembly. The torque values after cyclic loading were recorded for each specimen. T-test analysis was conducted on scores from the groups.
Resultes: The results of this study showed that the percentage of torque loss in castable abutments was significantly increased after cyclic loading (P<0.001).
Conclusion: Misfit between the castable implant components can cause torque loss before and after cyclic loading. However, it is more appropriate to relate the results of this study to the screw loosening of the above mentioned abutments than judging their clinical performance.

Abstract
Background and Aims: In 1978 WHO (World health organization) formulated a histopathological definition for diagnosis of OLP (oral lichen planus). Previous studies showed that diagnosis of OLP with these criteria are not reproducible. In 2003 Van der Meij et al. represented new clinical and histopathologic definition for diagnosis of OLP known as modified WHO criteria. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the interobserver and intraobserver variability in the histopathological assessment of OLP based on the modified WHO criteria.
Materials and Methods: Fifty five microscopic slides which OLP and OLL (Oral Lichenoid Lesion) were recognized in their clinical differential diagnosis were given to 6 pathologists in two phases with 3 months interval. Each reviewing pathologist was asked to apply the modified WHO definition of OLP and to categorize each case as either OLP, or compatible with OLP. Then, the interobserver and intraobserver variability were assessed by calculation of repeatability coefficient and Kappa statistics.
Results: The results of this study demonstrated that interobserver variability based on modified WHO criteria was 0.77 (strong), while the intraobserver variability varied from 0.58 (moderate) to 0.82 (strong).
Conclusion: In the present study, the interobserver and intraobserver variability in the histopathologic assessment of OLP based on modified WHO criteria was stronger than previous studies which assessed WHO criteria. However, in order to propose the replacement of WHO criteria with modified WHO criteria, further studies with more cases and comparing the two methods is required.

Abstract
Background and Aims: Use of computer and internet in our modern and digitalized society is an efficient tool to be up to date and fulfil the information gaps. The aim of this study was to evaluate the extent of computer and internet usage among dental students of Islamic Azad University, Tehran, in 2016.
Materials and Methods: This descriptive study for evaluating access and usage of computer and internet by dental students was done using a researcher-made questionnaire on 401 dental students. Validity and reliability (Kappa: 0.82) of the questionnaire was confirmed. Statistical analysis was done by SPSS22 using descriptive and Logistic regression analyses.
Results: More than 95% of the students had access to the computer and Internet. 45.6% of students reported their skills were in the basic level. The major use of computer among the students was internet but only 13.2% of students used Microsoft Office program. The students used the internet for dental subjects even monthly (34.9%) or weekly (29.4%). Only 9.7% of the students had participated in educational workshop for learning methods of research. The most limitation was internet velocity. Positive correlation was found among prospering ownership status (P<0.001), economic status (P=0.05), level of education semester (P=0.038) and the computer & internet usage (what’s more in terms of access and also in terms of improve information and knowledge).
Conclusion: Based on the results, a higher economic level, higher level of education, and property ownership made better access to the computer and Internet. However, computer skills should be more concerned in educational program.

Abstract
Background and Aims: Accurate diagnosis of vertical root fracture (VRF) is a fundamental importance in endodontics. Because of poor prognosis of VRF, digital radiographs with two horizontal angles have limitations in VRF detection. Also, Gutta-percha can produce artifacts that impair CBCT scan accuracy. The aim of this study was to compare accuracy of CBCT and digital radiography system in vertical root fracture in endodentically treated teeth.
Materials and Methods: In this study, 60 endodentically treated single teeth were selected and randomly coded. The teeth were divided into two groups: 30 with induced root fracture and 30 with no fracture. CBCT scan and digital radiographs with two horizontal angles with a difference of fifteen degrees for all teeth were performed. Two observers assessed the CBCT images and digital radiographies for presence of VRF. The statistical analysis used in this study was Weighted Kappa.
Results: CBCT had the highest sensivity (75.8) and specificity (90). Digital radiography with 68.3 sensitivity and 79.1 specificity were not as efficient as CBCT (P<0.05).
Conclusion: According to this study, the accuracy of CBCT seems to be higher than that of digital radiography in detecting VRF and provides the most reliable data in comparison of digital radiography.

Abstract
Background and Aims: Nasal obstruction is a common condition among children, in which delaying treatment can stabilize its negative effects on dentoalveolar structures during adulthood. In this study we aimed to investigate the effect of total nasal obstruction on the craniofacial structures of rabbits.
Materials and Methods: In this animal study, total numbers of 44 rabbits with high genetic proximity were selected. Several metal implants were inserted in the anatomic landmarks of their skulls and then underwent three different types of x-ray exposure (lateral, posterior-anterior and occlusal views). Half of them underwent surgically assisted total nasal obstruction, and the other half were considered as control group. All rabbits were kept in the same environment up to maturation period. Then, they underwent the same x-ray exposures. The primary and final radiographs were traced and various linear and angular were compared between them.
Results: The anterior facial height (P=0.01), maxillary depth (P=0.005), articular angle (P=0.005), maxillary and mandibular plan angle were significantly more in the rabbits with total nasal obstruction. However, the interdental width (P=0.005), maxillary perimeter (P=0.005), nasopharyngeal width (P=0.01) and maxillary and mandibular width were significantly less in them. The skull base length (P=0.30), gonial angle (P=0.40), and maxillary length (P=0.10) were not significantly different between the two groups.
Conclusion: Total nasal obstruction had various impacts on the craniofacial structures.

Abstract
Background and Aims: Due to the very high importance of assessing the clinical performance of students, choosing the best assessment tool and method is one of the most important goals and tasks in medical education. The objective of this study was the development of a checklist for the assessment of dental students’ clinical skills of Tehran University of Medical Sciences, in the clinical complete denture course. The second aim was to determine the validity and reliability of the checklist, and The third aim was the evaluation of raters’ and students’ satisfaction.
Materials and Methods: The checklist was developed in expert panel sessions, and the validity and reliability of the checklist were assessed with CVI (content validity index) test-retest and inter-rater reliability methods, respectively. Students (n=15) were evaluated with a developed checklist. At the end of the session, the satisfaction level of staff and students were assessed. The obtained information was reported descriptively with the expression of mean and standard deviation and in the form of relative and absolute frequencies.
Results: The content validity index (CVI) of the checklist was 0.96. The reliability of the checklist confirmed with a high Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (>0.8) (between 0.82-0.97) (P<0.05). The coefficient of agreement in inter-rater reliability was 0.99 (between 0.991-0.998). Raters’ and students’ satisfaction earned a high percentage of satisfaction.
Conclusion: The designed checklist has the optimal features of a good students’ clinical performance assessment tool; it seems that using this checklist can be an excellent alternative method to a global rating scale to assess the clinical skills of dental students in the complete denture courses.

Abstract
Background and Aims: Supporting the preventive approach is important in training future dentists. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the knowledge, attitude and practice of senior dental students regarding non-invasive management of dental caries.
Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 2019 using total sampling method and a valid and reliable questionnaire. Knowledge, attitude and self-reported practice of senior dental students regarding caries risk assessment (CRA) and management of lesions in two paper patients were assessed. The data analysis was performed using SPSS20 and the descriptive and analytical statistics were reported.
Results: In overall, 86 students (response rate=91%) were responded. In the knowledge section, caries history in the previous year, having frequent fermentable carbohydrate, xerostomia, and low socio-economic status were considered by more than half of students as factor for caries risk assessment. More than 90% of students had a positive attitude towards CRA in children. Nearly 50% of students tend to restore enamel lesions in proximal and occlusal surfaces in high-risk scenarios. There was significant association between the OHI instruction and debris index improvement (P=0.04) in the integrated comprehensive care clinic (TUMS). The linear regression analysis showed that there was no significant association between the demographic characteristics, place of education, previous course on the level of knowledge and attitude.
Conclusion: Senior dental students despite their general knowledge and positive attitude toward caries risk assessment, tended to aggressively manage the incipient lesions in the enamel and DEJ. Delivering prevention as integrated in the comprehensive care unit in order to improve oral hygiene status of patients is recommended.

Abstract
Background and Aims: Fractures of the facial bones and jawbones could cause functional problems along with social and cosmetic problems. Various factors (including road accidents, assault, falling from height, sport injuries, and getting hit by a hard object) could cause these fractures. Collecting and reporting accurate epidemiologic data regarding the facial fractures are major steps toward planning preventive measures. The aim of this study was to collect the epidemiologic data regarding maxillofacial fractures in two referral centers (Shariati and Sina hospitals) in the city of Tehran.
Materials and Methods: The study was a cross-sectional retrospective investigation. All the necessary data were collected from the patients’ files and analyzed using SPSS 25.
Results: The present study pursued data of 454 trauma admitted patients in oral and maxillofacial surgery wards of Shariati and Sina hospitals in 1397 and 1398. These data showed that a number of 374 patients of all patients were men and the other 80 were women. The ratio of male patients to female patients was 4.5:1. In 290 of cases (64%), the fractures occurred as combined fractures and in 164 cases (36%), the fractures occurred as single fracture. These fractures happened mostly in the mandibular bone and in mandibular body, and the least of these fractures happened in Orbit. This study showed that there was a significant relation (with 95% confidence level) between the mandibular body fractures and mandibular angle fractures. This study also showed that there was another significant relation (with 95% confidence level) between the mandibular angle fractures and LeFort 2 fractures. In addition, this study also showed (by using k2 exam) a relation between the etiology of trauma and the number of fractures.
Conclusion: This present study showed that the maxillofacial fractures happened mostly in men much more than women. If we put motorcycle accidents and car accidents in a group together called road accidents, the most common etiology of maxillofacial fractures is road accidents. The results showed that the most fractures happened in the age range of 15-25 year old.

Abstract
Background and Aims: Selecting the appropriate education evaluation method and the effects of this choice according to different fields of medical sciences, is one of the current priorities of medical education. Therefore, the aim of this study was to design a checklist for evaluating the practical skills of dental students and to get compared with the global ranking method.
Materials and Methods: A checklist was developed for the assessment of clinical skills of the practical pediatric course according to an action research method. 32 students were evaluated by the checklist method and 32 students were evaluated by the conventional global rating method (sampling was based on available sample). Faculty staff and students’ satisfaction regarding the two methods were reported by a 6-scaled measure and statistically analyzed by Wilcoxon Signed Ranks test. The students' scores by the two methods were subjected to paired t test for comparison.
Results: The students were more satisfied with the checklist method (P=0.003). The faculty staff considered a greater ability of the checklist method to differentiate between the students (P=0.03). However, in terms of ease of use and suitability, most faculty staff preferred the traditional method (P=0.02). In other cases, there were no significant differences in the views of students and faculty staff towards the two methods.
Conclusion: In the present study, both Checklist and global rating methods were valuable for evaluation, although due to the greater satisfaction of students and faculty staff with the developed checklist method, the possibility of identifying the weak points leading to decreased scores and better assessment of capabilities, this checklist can be used for evaluation instead.

Abstract
Background and Aims: According to the importance of primary stability on dental implant success and osseointegration, we intend to check and compare the stability and crestal bone loss rate between osteotomy technique and conventional implant insertion techniques.
Materials and Methods: In this study, 26 implants in anterior segment of maxilla in 13 patients were evaluated. The implants were TBR system (Toulouse, France) with 3.5 diameter and 10.5-12 mm length. The implant stability level was recorded immediately after surgery and 3 months later with Ostell mentor. The periapical radiography was taken immediately after surgery, 3 and 6 months to assess crestal bone resorption. Paired t-test and Wilcoxon signed Rank test used for data analysis.
Results: There were no statistically differences between the two treatments techniques in terms of stability (P>0.05). The mean crestal resorption was higher for the osteotomy technique 3 months after implant insertion (P<0.001) but there were no significant differences after 6 months (P=0.678).
Conclusion: Within the limitations of the current study, it can be concluded that the osteotomy it can be considered as a treatment technique in insufficient bone width.

Abstract
Background and Aims: Oral bacteria play an important role in oral diseases, due to their high adaptability to different environmental areas of the mouth. In this article, an attempt was made to describe the molecular mechanisms involved in the physiological relationships of oral and dental environment bacteria and their pathogenic significance with molecular approaches.
Materials and Methods: The present systematic review was written based on the advanced and standard search of keywords including Oral bacteria, Biofilm, and Dental diseases in PubMed, Springer, Scopus, Medline, Google Scholar, Science Direct, and Web of Science databases. For this purpose, an advanced and systematic search of articles published from 1993 to 2023 was conducted to compile the present article.
Results: Bacteria in the oral cavity have nutritional adaptations that are important for living in pathogen-host relationships, including adapting to proteolytic living conditions, using the host's glycome as a nutritional interface. This includes the use of host-derived sialic acid and other glycosidases in oral bacteria. Some of these bacteria adhere to surfaces such as salivary, epithelial proteins, and glycans, which ultimately lead to biofilm formation. Bacteria living in the oral environment are constantly exposed to a wide range of stress-causing factors and oxidative stress in the biofilm.
Conclusion: Dental caries, pulp, periapical, and periodontitis diseases (including gingivitis) are among the most common bacterial diseases. Among them, tooth decay caused by the presence of Streptococcus mutans is the most common dental disease due to the production of acids from carbohydrate fermentation which is characterized by the demineralization of tooth structure.

Abstract
Background and Aims: Dentists faced the highest risk of infection during the COVID-19 pandemic. Educating competent students is the first task of the dental school to overcome the created problems and thus, it is necessary to recognize the created educational deficiencies. This study aimed to assess the students' perspectives from the Dental School at Tehran University of Medical Sciences during the academic year 2019-2020, concerning the competencies expected to be developed during the clinical phase of the general dentistry curriculum during the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings are intended to inform the formulation of educational strategies in the post-pandemic period to address identified gaps in training.
Materials and Methods: During the academic year 2019-2020, a cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted at the School of Dentistry, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Iran. The study consisted of three phases: checklist design, psychometrics, and a survey of general dentistry students in their third to sixth year. The checklist design phase involved a team of four individuals, including educational officials from the faculty, academic staff members, and medical education experts. Experts confirmed the content validity of the checklist, while reliability was assessed using the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC), which indicated favorable validity and reliability. Subsequently, questionnaires formatted as Google Forms and a census approach were distributed to all students enrolled in the general dental course within the clinical section of the School of Dentistry at Tehran University of Medical Sciences. Ultimately, following the data collection process, statistical analysis was conducted utilizing descriptive statistics, including the mean and standard deviation, and the findings were communicated to the group managers.
Results: The assessment of content validity was established at a minimum of 71%, based on the evaluations provided by five experts. Additionally, reliability was measured using an intra-cluster correlation coefficient (ICC) exceeding 0.79, signifying a strong level of both validity and reliability. 122 students (53%) in the clinical stage completed the forms related to the pre-clinical/clinical units passed during the Covid era. Despite having enough training, basics Removable Partial Prosthodontics, Surgery 1, and Restorative 3 courses needed more training. In addition, Basics Removable Partial Prosthodontics, Surgery 1, and Surgery 4 needed the most practical training to acquire the necessary competencies.
Conclusion: The findings of this research indicated that the dental students expressed a desire for increased practice across various levels of pre-clinical and clinical courses. This would suggest that the challenges associated with patient interactions during the COVID-19 pandemic may not be the sole contributing factor. Consequently, alongside the need for educational planning to address the requirements of enrolled students, it appears essential to conduct similar studies in the post-pandemic context. Furthermore, this approach may also prove beneficial in evaluating educational needs for ongoing professional development courses.

Abstract
Background and Aims: Oral health is recognized as an integral component of general health andlike other health aspects, can significantly impact the quality of life of both the individual and their family. Due to their rapid physical and psychological development, children are particularly vulnerable to the adverse consequences of oral health problems. Accordingly, the present study aimed to investigate the impact of children's oral health on family quality of life and the factors influencing this relationship among children under six years old in Qazvin, Iran.
Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on the parents of 80 six-year-old children in Qazvin city in 2022. A convenience sampling method was employed, recruiting participants from among those attending the Dental School of Qazvin University of Medical Sciences. Initially, the child's demographic information (age, gender, birth order, and family socioeconomic status) was collected from the parents. Subsequently, they completed the Family Impact Scale (FIS) questionnaire. This questionnaire assesses the impact of a child's oral and dental problems on the family, utilizing four subscales. Subsequently, questions were asked regarding general health, oral and dental health, dental visits, and the services received. The collected data were then analyzed using descriptive and analytical statistics including variance, Pearson correlation, and T tests.
Results: 80 parents were enrolled in the study of whom 39 had a son and 41 had a daughter. The mean age of the studied children was 4.72±1.06 years, with an age range of 3 years (the youngest being 3 and the oldest 6 years old). Among the dimensions of family quality of life (FIS), the family finances subscale had the highest mean score (0.53 ± 0.68), while the family conflict subscale had the lowest (0.73±0.44). The overall mean score for family quality of life was 0.52±0.6. No statistically significant relationship was found between the outcome variable (oral health-related quality of life) and the independent variable of family economic status (P>0.05). However, a statistically significant relationship was observed with the independent variable of the child's birth order (P=0.002), indicating that the impact of the child's oral health on family quality of life would increase with a higher birth order. Furthermore, a significant relationship was found between the child's age and two subscales of family quality of life: family activity (P=0.03) and family conflict (P=0.006). Specifically, a younger child's age was associated with a greater impact of their oral health on the family's quality of life. There was a significant relationship between the child's general health and oral/dental health from the parents' perspective and the impact of the obtained FIS score (P=0.001 and P=0.04, respectively).
Conclusion: The findings indicated that a child's oral health status could impact the family quality of life, and this impact was associated with the child's age and birth order.

Abstract
Background and Aims: The growing growth of dental services and the increasing competition among businesses in this field have made attracting new customers and retaining them a very difficult yet vital task for dental professionals. This has led to the emergence of the marketing function in dentistry and a look at international dental journals shows that in the past decades, researchers have paid increasing attention to the role of marketing in dentistry. They have examined and tested the impact and also how to formulate dental marketing strategies through theoretical studies and various scientific methods. For this reason, the purpose of the present study was to statistically examine the global trend of scientific productions related to marketing strategy in dentistry.
Materials and Methods: This research is a descriptive-analytical research in terms of its purpose, which was conducted using scientometrics and bibliometric analysis. In terms of time of this research, it is a cross-sectional research and based on the type of data, it is a quantitative research. The documents examined included all scientific articles published in English in the field of marketing strategy in dentistry, which were written by all researchers throughout the world until the end of 2025 and indexed in the PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases. This research was conducted in January 2026.
Results: The results of the study indicated that the number of research related to the topic of "marketing strategies in dentistry" published in the PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus databases from the beginning to 2025 was 365 documents and the dynamics of these researches were from 2017 to 2025. The largest number of researches was from 2025 with 40 works. The largest work in the field of marketing strategies in dentistry was by a researcher named Ball R with 10 scientific works. The British Dental Journal had the largest scientific production in this field with 23 works published. The largest number of researches in this field had been conducted in the United States with 225 works.
Conclusion: The results of the research indicated that marketing strategies today have taken a position beyond a mere marketing concept and have gradually emerged as a key process in dental research. The significant focus of scientific production on marketing studies, marketing strategies, and related outcomes in dentistry shows that marketing strategies play an important role in attracting patients, their satisfaction, the profitability of dental businesses, and the general health of society.
