Abstract

Background and Aim: Iranian temporary cement, Tem Band, has been manufactured by Golchai company, and introduced to market as a suitable material but its properties have not been tested yet. The aim of this study was to investigate the setting time, film thickness, compressive strength, disintegration and arsenic content of Tem Band and Temp bond temporary cements and compare them to ISO 3107. Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, 12 samples from each cement were obtained and setting time, film thickness, compressive strength, solubility and disintegration were tested according to ISO 3107. In addition, arsenic content was tested based on ASTM 6052. Data were analyzed with t-test and p<0.05 was considered as the limit of significance.

Results: The average setting time of Tem Band was 5 minutes and 47 seconds (4.17 minutes for Temp Bond), the average film thickness was 6.67 micrometer for Tem Band and 4.08 micrometer for Temp Bond. There was no difference between two cements regarding setting time and film thickness and for both was at the standard range. Compressive strength of Tem Band was 5.67 MPa and 8.5 MPa for Temp Bond. The difference was statistically significant but for both cements was less than standard (35 MPa). There was no significant difference regarding the solubility and disintegration tests. In both samples, the solubility and disintegration values were in standard ranges. Both cements did not contain arsenic but lead level was at the maximum standard range in Tem Band.

Conclusion: Considering these results, both cements are applicable to different clinical situations based on their physical properties. Studies on the biocompatibility of the Iranian cement is recommended.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Processing conditions affect sensitometric properties of X-ray films. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the sensitometric characteristics of InSight (IP), a new F-speed film, in fresh and used processing solutions in dental office condition and compare them with Ektaspeed Plus (EP).

Materials and Methods: In this experimental in vitro study, an aluminium step wedge was used to construct characteristic curves for InSight and Ektaspeed Plus films (Kodak Eastman, Rochester, USA).All films were processed in Champion solution (X-ray Iran, Tehran, Iran) both manually and automatically in a period of six days. Unexposed films of both types were processed manually and automatically to determine base plus fog density. Speed and film contrast were measured according to ISO definition. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and T tests with P<0.05 as the level of significance.

Results: IP was 20 to 22% faster than EP and showed to be an F-speed film when processed in automatic condition and E-F film when processed manually. Also it was F-speed in fresh solution and E-speed in old solution. IP and EP contrasts were similar in automatic processing but EP contrast was higher when processed manually. Both EP and IP films had standard values of base plus fog (<0.35) and B+F densities were decreased in old solution.

Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, InSight is a F-speed film with a speed of at least 20% greater than Ektaspeed. In addition, it reduces patient exposure with no damage to image quality.

Abstract

Background and Aims: According to the research background and need to print CBCT images in case of emergency, this study has been done to compare the quality and accuracy of the two methods of film and paper printing for CBCT images.

Materials and Methods: The study of CBCT images taken from 5 patients was done and the cross-sectional slices on Fotolusio DNP papers and film AGFA were printed. Afterward, the images was exmined by a maxillofacial radiologist. The images’ quality were identified and recorded with anatomical, from 1 to 4 on forms. The accuracy was determined by the diagnosis of alveolar canal area and the comparison with the gold standard. Data were analyzed using independent chi-square and Fisher exact tests’.

Results: The images quality in anatomical landmarks consisting PDL (P=0.02), lamina dura (P=0.006), the inferior alveolar canal (P=0.01) and the filling (P=0.006) had a significant difference. There was no significant difference. For the lower border of the mandible landmark, there was no difference between the two methods of printing. In comparing the diagnostic accuracy between the two methods (P=1).

Conclusion: The results showed that the diagnostic quality in film printing is better than paper printing and the diagnostic accuracy is the same in both methods.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Candida is an opportunistic pathogen that causes illness in people with a defective or weakened condition. Infectious diseases (periodontal diseases) are inflammatory and malignant inflammation of the dental-gum complex, in which the growth of biofilms caused by Candida glabrata, Parapseilosis and Tropikalis is less than Candida albicans. Brown algae Sargasum is more compatible with human medicines due to having a natural origin than chemical drugs and has less side effects. The aim of the present study was to investigate the molecular characteristics of Candida species isolated from periodontal infections and the effect of Sargassum glaucescens extract on biofilm gene expression using Real-Time-PCR.
Materials and Methods: Oral samples of periodontal infection were collected from the referred patients. To isolate the candidate species, the specimens were cultured on a Sabouraud dextrose agar containing chloramphenicol (SDAc). The extracted DNA was extracted from colonies grown from Kit and Glass pearl. Grown chickens were identified by specific primers by PCR-RFLP method. In order to detect the expression of als genes in Candida isolates, RNA extraction was performed using Phenol-Chloroform and Pearl glass, and the CLSI-M27-A2 method was used to evaluate the effect of Sargasum glaucescens extract of algae.
Results: The results showed that the expression of als gene in periodontal infection is higher than other genes. Another role is als in the formation of Candida albicans biofilm. The minimum inhibitory concentration of fungal growth was 256 μg/ml by algae extract. Sargasum glaucescens reduced the expression of als gene expression by about 62% in the sample.
Conclusion: Sargasum glaucescens algae possesses specific pharmacological properties and antimicrobial and antimicrobial effects. The results of the study using Real Time PCR showed that expression of als gene in isolated studied with Sargasum algae extract was lower than untreated isolates. Thus, this indicated the positive role of treatment by sargasum glaucescens extract in reducing the expression of biofilm gene in isolates.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Due to the increasing problems and side effects of the use of chemical antibacterial agents as well as antibiotic resistance, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of aloe vera gel on biofilm gene expression of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) isolated from patients with periodontal infection by Real time-PCR method.
Materials and Methods: For this study, 100 individuals including 50 patients and 50 healthy individuals were recruited and examined by a periodontist. After identifying sulfate-reducing bacteria by biochemical tests and specific media, the effect of aloe vera extract on them was investigated and the expression of BFR gene against housekeeping gene (16srDNA) was determined by Real time- PCR test via T-test analysis method.
Results: The data showed that 12 strains of sulfate-reducing bacteria were isolated from the samples, 5 of which had BFR gene and their gene expression was significantly reduced by aloe vera gel (P<0.05).
Conclusion: The data of this study in proving the anti-biofilm and antibacterial effects of aloe vera extract showed that the expression of the target gene is reduced. It seems that this substance can be used as an alternative to oral hygiene chemicals.
