Abstract

Background and Aim: Sufficient polymerization is a critical factor to obtain optimum physical properties and clinical efficacy of resin restorations. The aim of this study was to evaluate wear rates of composite resins polymerized by two different systems Light Emitting Diodes (LED) to and Halogen lamps.

Materials and Methods: In this laboratory study, 20 specimens of A3 Tetric Ceram composite were placed in brass molds of 2*10*10 mm dimensions and cured for 40 seconds with 1 mm distance from surface. 10 specimens were cured with LED and the other 10 were cured with Halogen unit. A device with the ability to apply force was developed in order to test the wear of composites. After storage in distilled water for 10 days, the specimens were placed in the wear testing machine. A chrome cobalt stylus with 1.12 mm diameter was applied against the specimens surfaces with a load of 2 kg. The weight of each samples before and after 5000, 10000, 20000, 40000, 80000 and 120000 cycles was measured using an electronic balance with precision of 10-4 grams. Data were analyzed using t test and paired t test. P<0.05 was considered as the limit of significance.

Results: Mean weight in both groups had statistically significant difference before and after all cycles (P<0.05). In halogen group 5000 and 10000 cycles led to significant difference with 40000, 80000 & 120000 cycles (P<0.05). In LED group 20000 cycles had significant difference with both 5000 and 120000 cycles (P>0.05).

Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, LED and halogen light curing units resulted in a similar wear rate in composite resin restorations.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Light cured composites and other restorative materials are quite common in dentistry today. Successful restorations are dependent on efficiency of curing light unit, eg. the intensity of emitted light and its wave length. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficiency units of curing, in private dental offices in Tehran.

Materials and Methods: In this descriptive cross sectional study, light curing devices in 240 private dental offices were evaluated randomly. Light intensity was measured by radiometer, debris on the fan and cracks and scratches on the filter were directly observed and the age of the device, frequency of changing the bulb and satisfaction of the dentist with regard to the light curing unit were recorded in a questionnaire. Data were analyzed using Spearman and t test, with p<0.05 as the level of significance.

Results: The results showed that 53.8% of the units had intensities more than 300 mW/cm2. The intensity of 30.4% of curing light units were between 20 and 300 mW/cm2 and 15.8% had intensities lower than 200 mW/cm2. There was a negative relation between light intensity and the age of the unit, frequency of bulb changing or scratches on the filter and debris on the fan.

Conclusion: The results of this study showed that the light intensities of about 46% of light curing units used in private dental practices and clinics were inadequate. Since factors like aging of the curing light unit, frequent bulb changing, increasing the amount of debris on the fan and scratches on the filter reduce the light intensity, regular quality control of these devices is essential.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Pit and fissure sealant therapy, is one of the most effective methods, in prevention of occlusal caries. Saliva contamination before curing the resin can increase the risk of failure in this method. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of saliva contamination prior to curing on microleakage of pit and fissure sealants.

Materials and Methods: In this experimental in vitro study 21 sound human pre molars were selected and two standardized V-Shaped fissures were prepared on both buccal and lingual surfaces, then they were randomly divided into two equal groups. In the control group, the sealant was cured without any saliva contamination and in the case group, the sealed teeth were immersed in artificial saliva for ten seconds before curing. After thermocycling the samples were immersed in 2% fouchsin solution for 24 hours and then sectioned longitudinally in bucco - lingual direction. The specimens were then fixed and assessed under stereomicroscope to determine microleakage and dye penetration using paired student t. test. P<0.05 was considered as the level of significance.

Results: Analysis of data showed no significant differences in microleakage, between the two groups (p=0.178).

Conclusion: According to the results of this study saliva contamination of uncured sealant had no influence on microleakage.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Composite restorative materials and dental adhesives are usually cured with light sources. The light direction may influence the bond strength of dental adhesives. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of light direction on the microtensile bond strength of fifth and sixth generation dental adhesives.

Materials and Methods: Prime & Bond NT and Clearfil SE bond were used with different light directions. Sixty human incisor teeth were divided into 4 groups (n=15). In groups A and C, Clearfil SE bond with light curing direction from buccal was used for bonding a composite resin to dentin. In groups B and D, Prime & Bond NT with light curing direction from composite was used. After thermocycling the specimens were subjected to tensile force until debonding occurred and values for microtensile bond strength were recorded. The data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey post hoc test.

Results: The findings showed that the bond strength of Clearfil SE bond was significantly higher than that of Prime&Bond NT (P<0.001). There was no significant difference between light curing directions (P=0.132).

Conclusion: Light curing direction did not have significant effect on the bond strength. Sixth generation adhesives was more successful than fifth generation in terms of bond strength to dentin.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Using the conservative adhesive resin restoration (CAR) in uncooperative children lead to numerous problems because of being time consuming. The purpose of this study was to compare the microleakage of conservative adhesive resin restoration under separate curing and co-curing.

Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, 120 intact premolar teeth were collected and 120 vertical grooves were prepared on them. Then the teeth were divided into four groups: group 1, separated curing of bonding agent, flowable composite and sealant group 2, co-curing of all materials for 60 seconds group 3,
co-curing of all materials for 40 seconds and group 4, co-curing of all materials for 20 seconds. Then the specimens were thermocycled and immersed in basic fuchsin solution. The teeth were sectioned horizontally and dye penetration was evaluated with stereomicroscope. Date were analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Scheffe test.

Results: Mean value of dye penetration in groups 1, 2, 3, and 4 was 1.53±0.6, 2.06±0.6, 2.5±0.7 and 3.53±0.6, respectively. There was a statistically significant difference between group 1 and the other groups (P=0.0001).

Conclusion: Considering the problems caused by microleakage in conservative resin adhesive restorations, co-curing method should not be used. In the case of using co-curing method, 60 second curing time is suggested for sufficient polymerization.

Abstract

Background and Aims: One of the main disadvantages of light cured composite resin materials is polymerization shrinkage upon curing. This leads to the microleakage of restoration and finally failure of the restoration. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of two types of light curing devices with different modes on the microleakage of posterior composite filling in Cl II restorations.
Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, 30 extracted sound molar human teeth were collected. All specimens were randomly divided into 3 groups of ten: Standard LED irradiation, pulse curing LED irradiation and QTH irradiation. All samples were prepared with mesial and distal boxes and composite fillings were done with three different light curing patterns for 20 s. After thermocycling, the specimens were kept in 2% methylene Blue solution for 24 h for microleakage test. After sectioning, the samples were evaluated by a stereomicroscope. For data analysis one-way ANOVA and Kolmogorov-Smirnov were used. P<0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Results: The quantitative tests showed that there were no statistical difference between study groups (P>0.05).
Conclusion: The results showed that both light curing devices were effective and no significant difference between different modes of LED light curing device on microleakage of class II composite restorations was found.
