Abstract

Background and Aim: Aggressive periodontitis is one of the periodontal diseases, which affects systemically healthy individuals usually under the age of 30 years old. The disease is characterized by rapid bone destruction which is not in accordance with the quantity of bacterial plaque. The purpose of the present study was to determine the prevalence of aggressive periodontitis among 15-18 years old female students in Tehran high schools.

Materials and Methods: In this cross sectional study, , 2870 students were selected from all educational areas of Tehran during 1382-83 based on systematic clustered random sampling .Probing pocket depth on 6 areas of incisors and first molars were examined in each subject. Students with pocket depth equal to or more than 4 mm on more than one tooth were referred to Shahed Dental School for radiographic examination. For cases in which the distance between the crest of interdental septa and CEJs were equal to or more than 2 mm, full clinical and radiographic examination was performed.

Results: Among the subjects of study, only 4 fulfilled the diagnostic criteria of localized aggressive periodontitis. Nobody was diagnosed with generalized aggressive periodontitis. The prevalence of aggressive periodontitis among 15-18 years old schoolgirls was 0.14%.

Conclusion: The results of the present study were similar to previous studies with the same age groups and diagnostic criteria in other countries. For determination of total prevalence in Tehran, similar studies in schoolboys are recommended.

Abstract

Background and Aims: The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of diabetes and other risk factors in patients with dental infections.

Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 50 patients who preferred in maxillofacial word of shariaty hospital with acute dental infections in 9 months. A self-administered questionnaire was administered during a dental appointment in order to gather demographic information and recorded past history of systemic disease, OPG radiography, gingival examination, and the result of lab tests such as CBC , FBS , PT, Bilirubin , Creat, T3, T4, TSH, HIVAb and HBSAg.

Results: 28% of the subjects and diabetes, 28% Anemia, 4% Hepatitis and 4% suffered from thyroid deficiency. 28% were smokers and 18% declared using alcohol. 6% of this population was addicted to narcotic substances. There was a significant correlation between age, education, diabetes and dental infections (P<0.05). DMFT for people with dental infections without any systemic disease were 8, for diabetic patients, smokers and alcohol users were respectively 17.16, 17 and 14.

Conclusion: Diabetes found highly prevalent in patients with dental infection and high DMFT.It indicates a need to establish a comprehensive oral health promotion program based on whole examination and blood glucose control in diabetic patients who have acute dental infection by collaboration between dental and general health care professionals. Moreover, it is recommended that all patients should be educated in dental and oral health for prevention of dental infections.

Abstract

  Background and Aims: AIDS-associated oral lesions are important, in terms of diagnostic-prognostic role and monitoring patients moreover some of them may reduce patient’s quality of life. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of oral lesions in HIV patients.

  Materials and Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out among a total of 62 HIV+ patients who attended a counseling and treatment center in Rasht. Demographic information, drugs and laboratory status were extracted from patients’ files. Data were analyzed using univariate and multivariate logistic regressions with multiple linear regressions.

  Results: From 62 cases, 50 were male and 12 female and the mean age was 40.5±11.3 years. 59 patients had oral lesions including periodontal disease (95%). The most prevalent oral lesions included: periodontitis (67.7%), oral candidiasis (41.9%) of erythematous (35.4%) and pseudomembranous types (6.45%) and angular cheilitis (12.9%). Patients with removable denture presented a higher rate of erythematous candidiasis and angular cheilitis (P=0.001). In this study, periodontal diseases were rosed by the post-diagnosis years (P=0.024) and the antiretroviral medications (P=0.002). Patients on the prophylactic medications (P=0.043) were less likely to have erythematous candidiasis age may caused angular cheilitis (P=0.041). Pseudomembranous candidiasis was inversely correlated with CD4 + L levels (P=0.052).

  Conclusion: The majority of the cases in this study were IV drug user males within the 4th decade of life. Although oral lesions were not common, but the dental and periodontal statuses exhibited poor oral hygiene which need more attention.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Dental erosion refers to the loss of tooth structure by being scratched chemically without bacterial involvement which needs to care about due to its prevalence and treatment problems. This study was designed with the aim of evaluation of the frequency of dental erosion and its causing factors in patients referring to yazd dental school in 2012-2013.

Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 400 patients referring to yazd dental school were randomly selected. All of their teeth were evaluated in three surfaces (buccal, lingual and occlusal). The BEWE score was used for classification the extent of damages. Also, patients were given a questionnaire that included patient demographic information and questions to investigate the causes of dental erosion. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 17 and Mann-Whiney, Fisher exact, and Chi-square tests.

Results: In this study, 138 men and 261 women were participated with the mean age of 33.26±10.83. 84 persons (21.1%) had erosion. There was a direct and significant relationship between the dental erosion and patient's age (P >0.001). Also, there was a direct relationship between the dental erosion and reflux and consumption of lemon and pickle, beverages, soft beer and juice (P>0.001).

Conclusion: Consumption of lemon and pickle, beverages, soft beer and juice increases the risk of erosion. Considering the prevalence of dental erosion in about 21% of patients, it is necessary to pay more attention to the knowledge of the causes of erosion and reduction strategies of it.

Abstract

Background and Aims: Although dental implants have become a successful and predictable ong-term treatment for patients, not all implant treatments are necessarily successful and pre-implant diseases are spreading. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of peri-implantitis in patients one year after prosthetic loading in Khorramabad in 2021.
Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 53 patients who had implants and undergone prosthetic loading for one year were studied. In each of the 53 patients, the probing depth (PD) and bleeding during probing (BOP) around the implant and the characteristics of the surrounding soft tissue, including gingival redness and tissue sensitivity were evaluated and recorded. To assess the bone level or possible bone resorption, a P.A. graph was taken from the patient using a parallel technique. Information such as demographic characteristics and specialized information about the disease were collected through a checklist. Data were collected using SPSS22 software. Frequency tables and chi-square and t-tests were used to analyze the data.
Results: The mean age of patients participating in the present study was 46.5±10.63 years. The number of women was 33 (62.3%). The prevalence of peri-implantitis was 17% at the patient level and 9.3% at the implant unit level. There was a significant relationship between the age (P<0.03) and systemic disease (P<0.03) with the prevalence of peri-implantitis. However, there was no statistically significant relationship between the prevalence of peri-implantitis and other demographic variables (P<0.05).
Conclusion: The results of the present study showed that the prevalence of peri-implantitis was higher in people with a higher mean age. In addition, systemic diseases are a protective factor for peri-implantitis.
