Abstract

Introduction: Safety signs provide information as well as instructions concerning the hazard or dangers in the workplace. The correct comprehension of these signs is very important for doing the necessary feedback in the specific situation which they are described.

Method and Materials: In this cross sectional study, the comprehension of 10 selected safety signs were investigated in 53 randomly selected employees of an industrial company in Shiraz. The comprehension test was carried out by aid a standard questionnaire obtained from ISO 9186-1:2007.

Results: In this study the mean comprehension scores of the tested signs was 65.95 percent with standard deviation if 28.7. The highest and lowest comprehension scores were for “use hearing protectors” and “biological hazard” respectively. The comprehension of 40 percent of tested safety signs was lower than the minimum acceptable values of ISO 3864 and ANSI Z535.3 standards.

Conclusion: This study showed that there is a significant difference in comprehensions of tested safety signs. For full comprehension of safety signs it is necessary to train the employees or adding supplementary text to the symbols in some cases.

Abstract

Introduction: Workplace design is one of the factors that can influence comfort, performance, productivity and the health status of employees. The effects of this factor on human’s productivity and performance are studied in the domain of ergonomics. The impact of workplace design on workers’ productivity and performance can be determined by investigation of the quality of the design. The main purpose of the present study was to investigate the influence of workplace design on productivity of the bank clerks.

Material and Method: Samples in this cross-sectional study were comprised of 150 employees of 22 different branches of a bank in Tehran city. Data collection tools included demographic questionnaire and a questionnaire related to the effects of workplace design on employees’ productivity, developed by Hameed and colleagues. Correlation and regression statistical tests were used in order to analyze data.

Result: According to the results, the mean (±SD) for age and job tenure of participants were 37.2(±6) and 13(±7) years, respectively. Of the surveyed demographic features, a significant relationship was observed between age and scores belonging to the temperature and furniture (P-value<0.05). In addition, there was a significant association between employees’ productivity and the noise (P-value=0.044) and spatial arrangement of environment (P-value=0.048).

Conclusion: Overall, appropriate and high quality design of work environment can improve productivity of bank clerks. In other words, employees’ productivity can be enhanced by comfortable and ergonomic design of working environment and also by considering their needs.

Abstract

Introduction: Heat stress is caused by many factors such as individual factors, environmental factors, and management factors. Individual risk factors can decrease the heat tolerance, and play an important role in heat stress disorders incidence. The aim of this study was to review individual parameters influencing the thermal stress and review the preceding studies.

Material and Method: In this review study sites such as Web of Science, Scopus, Pubmed, Iran Medex, Magiran, Google Scholar and SID databases were used for search. The keywords included heat stress, personal factors and heat exposure. The period of 1995 to 2015 was investigated, and finally 75 original articles were identified.

Result: At the individual level, exposure with a single risk factor may reduce the workers’ heat tolerance; while exposure with a combination of several risk factors probably synergistically increases the risk of heat-related disorders. Individual risk factors include age, gender, obesity, fatigue, race, and previous heat disorders and dehydration. In addition, some diseases (such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes and infectious diseases) or use of certain drugs or alcohol can reduce the heat tolerance.

Conclusion: It is necessary to pay attention to the mentioned items when selecting workers in the hot environments. Also, due to the lack of awareness and knowledge of workers, it is necessary to provide appropriate training programs to reduce the effects of heat stress.

Abstract

Introduction: The carpet industry is one of the most important handicrafts in Iran. This industry is one of the most difficult and harmful professions, in which the employees are often working in a workplace with non-ergonomic, unsafe, and unhealthy conditions. The present study aimed to address the modeling of the individual, job characteristics, and workplace conditions with the general health of carpet weavers through an ergonomic approach.
Material and Methods: The current study was a descriptive-analytic survey. The study population was female workers, who have had a minimum of one-year work experience and working in the workshops located in Meshginshahr city villages. The data collection tool was a combination questionnaire including, Goldberg’s questionnaire (GHQ-28), NIOSH questionnaire (disease history section), and questions about workplace conditions. The obtained data were entered into SPSS-17 software and analyzed statistically using statistical modeling based on the general linear model, multivariate and other statistical tests.
Results: Unpleasant condition was observed among the 37.4% of the examined, in terms of general health. Logistic regression modeling was used to investigate the internal and external factors of carpet weavers with their general health status. According to the model, general health has a significant relationship (p<0.05) with most of the internal factors such as age, marital status, history of disease, etc. However, there was no significant relationship with the workplace conditions.
Conclusion: According to the results of this study, it can be concluded that demographic and job variables are of the most important factors affecting the general health of carpet weavers. Although in the model, the workplace conditions did not show any significant relationship with the components of general health, interpreting these findings requires more studies. More studies are required objectively to identify the effect causes of the general health of carpet weavers (especially workplace conditions).

Abstract

Introduction: Prevention of heat-related diseases requires the participation of the workers. For this reason, the aim of this study was the development and validation of the tools for evaluating awareness and practice related to heat stress among the workers of warm workplaces.
Material and Methods: The various items and factors related to the awareness and practice of the workers were identified by the literature review. Then, several questions for evaluating these items were designed. In the next step, the reliability and validity of the questionnaires were appraised using calculating the content validity ratio (CVR) and content validity index (CVI), and Cronbach’s alpha coefficient, respectively. After that, these questionnaires were completed by 2338 employees of six industries in various regions of Iran. Finally, collected data were analyzed using SPSS software.
Results: In total, 77 questions, including 53 questions on awareness and 24 questions on practice in six groups of water and beverages, food, snacks and additives, heat exchange, thermal strain risk factors, clothing and heat protection equipment, and heat-related disorders and body reactions, were designed. The values of content validity index (CVI) of remained questions in the questionnaires of awareness and practice were equal to 0.954 and 0.824, respectively. The values of Cronbach’s alpha coefficients of these questionnaires were calculated by 0.755 and 0.716, respectively. The values of the chi-square divided by degrees of freedom (CMIN/DF) and root mean square error of approximation (RMSEA) in the construction of the awareness questionnaire were computed as 4.58 and 0.079, respectively. These values in the construction of the practice questionnaire were calculated by 2.33 and 0.084, respectively.
Conclusion: The results showed that the designed questionnaires had appropriate reliability and validity and could be used to evaluate the awareness and practice in warm workplaces.

Abstract

Introduction: Computer vision syndrome (CVS) is one of the most common health concerns associated with the extensive use of computers, particularly in the working environment. Since recent studies have shown the high prevalence of CVS, it is necessary to have an appropriate tool for assessing this prevalence. The present research aims to translate the CVS questionnaire and analyze its validity and reliability and assess the incidence of this condition among the staff members at Tabriz University of Medical Sciences.
Material and Methods: The translation of the main questionnaire into the Persian version was carried out in three steps. Two coefficients including the content validity ratio (CVR) and the content validity index (CVI) were used to evaluate the content validity of the questionnaire. The reliability of the questionnaire was examined using two methods including internal consistency (Cronbach’s alpha) and test-retest. In total, 240 participants were asked to fulfill the questionnaire in order to investigate the prevalence rate of CVS among the staff members of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences. After removing the ineligible ones, 219 questionnaires were examined.
Results: The internal consistency coefficient and Cronbach’s alpha coefficient were 0.91 and 0.89, respectively. Out of a total of 102 women and 117 men, only 19 women and 21 men did not have CVS. Among the studied symptoms, eye redness (78.1%), burning (76.7%), and headache (74%) were the most prevalent in the statistical population. No significant relationship was observed between the final score of CVS and gender.
Conclusion: In terms of validity and reliability, the questionnaire was found to be satisfactory. The prevalence of CVS among the staff members of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences was high (81%). To determine the etiologies, further research is needed.

Abstract

Introduction: The COVID-19 pandemic caused many businesses to face problems and created job insecurity, leaving many workers and employees stressed about losing their jobs. Therefore, the current research aimed to analyze the impact of workplace safety management measures on the behavior of organizational citizens concerning the role of job insecurity and the perceived risk of COVID-19 among the employees of Mashhad Social Security Organization.
Material and Methods: The current applied research is a descriptive survey. The research population is all 560 employees of the social security organization of Mashhad city. The sample size was estimated based on Morgan’s table using a convenience sampling method, with a total number of 225. The data collection instrument was Wu et al.’s (2022) standard questionnaire, used to check construct validity and confirmatory factor analysis. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient and composite reliability were used to measure reliability, and the results showed that the questionnaire was adequately valid and reliable. The data analysis also involved structural equation modeling conducted in Smart PLS.
Results: The results showed that workplace safety management measures have an impact on organizational citizenship behavior and the perceived risk of COVID-19. Also, the perceived risk of COVID-19 has a positive effect on perceived job insecurity. Yet, the perceived risk of COVID-19 does not influence organizational citizenship behavior and does not mediate the relationship between workplace safety management measures and organizational citizenship behavior. Workplace safety management measures have an impact on perceived job insecurity, and job insecurity has an impact on organizational citizenship behavior.
Conclusion: In light of the present findings, it can be concluded that workplace safety management measures are among the most important programs and strategies of organizations to increase citizenship behaviors, support employees, and provide safe conditions in an organization.
