Abstract

Background and aim: Stroke is one of the main reasons that would cause disability in adult population. The patient prefers to use his non-involved limb for self-care activities that called disuse learning of involved upper extremity.Constraint-induced therapy is one of the rehabilitative intervention that seems to improve motor ability and functional use of involved upper extremity in some of patients with hemiparesis after stroke. The aim of this study was to investigate the time effects of constraint-induced therapy on functions, coordination and movements of upper extremity of adult patients with hemiplegia.

Materials and methods: In present study, 15 patients with stroke participated in structured therapy sessions (CIT) emphasizing more affected upper extremity in different activities five times a week for 12 weeks and 2 hours a day and non-involved upper extremity were also restrained five times a week for 12 weeks and 5 hours a day

Results: The data was analyzed with paired t-test. The scores  of different  subtests of Fugl-Meyer test  such as shoulder and forearm, wrist and hand movements, coordination and speed of involved upper extremities showed significant differences between pre and post interventions in different time periods (p>0.05). Test scores increased up to 8 weeks but no significant increase was seen after 8th week .Dexterity measurements by Minnesota Manual Dexterity test  showed significant differences between pre and post intervention in different time periods ( p  < 0.05) with maximum increase up to 10 weeks

Conclusion: The present data showed that constraint-induced therapy could be an effective approach to improve function and overcome disuse learning. The results of this study revealed that scores of Fugl-Meyer and Minnesota Manual Dexterity test  would reflect functional skills improvement.

Abstract

Background and aim: To investigate the effect of the light touch, vision and dual task interference on the surface electromyography (sEMG) activity of ankle muscles Participants: Thirty persons (12 male, 18 Female), right hand without any neuro-musculo-skeletal disorder and in healthy condition, participated in this study.
Methods and Materials:
Participants stood in upright and semi tandem position. There was a high sensitivity sensor on the right side in direction of femur greater trochanter. They should press the sensor less than 50 gr. Also we examined the rate of activity in 3 muscles (Tibialis Anterior, Proneus Longuse, Soleuse) on both lower limbs by Biometrix sEMG device. 4 positions were experimented in semi tandem standing: No Touch, No Counting No Touch, Counting Light Touch, No Counting Light Touch, Counting. Each of the above positions was tested in 2 conditions: Eyes Open, Eyes Closed.
Results:
Our findings detect that light touch contact especially during vision, resulted in reducing the rate of sEMG activity in the leg postural muscles. No touch and closed eyes, raise the rate of sEMG activity to maximum.
conclusion: On basis of findings, it seems that following skin receptors stimulation, some complicated mechanisms will be begun and in order to the orders of Central Nervous System (CNS), these muscles will make the hole body, stable. So it can reduce the entered pressure on leg postural muscles. Therefore we can see the lesser rate in sEMG activity of leg postural muscles.

Abstract

Background and aim:   nowadays, comprehensive  developmental assessment of infants is highly considered. But, some assessments, especially those which use more manipulations on high risk infants, can cause more stress  on them. So sometimes it is necessary  to use one group of developmental assessments to predict another developmental aspect.  The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between scores of behavioral scale and  motor performance.
Materials and methods:   In this  cross-sectional study that was conducted in neonatal intensive care unit and pediatric clinic of Shahid  Akbarabadi hospital, Tehran, 50 under 2 months low birth weight infants after met inclusion criteria were selected via convinence sampling method.  The Test of Infant Motor Performance (TIMP) and the Neonatal Behavioral Assessment Scale (NBAS) was used  for assessing motor performance and behavioral performance respectively. The TIMP consist of elicited and observational parts. NBAS was consisted  of habituation, social interaction, motor system, state organization, state regulation, autonomic system,  smile, supplementary items, and reflex items.
Results:  There was not any significant relationship between habituation part  of NBAS  and TIMP and also between autonomus system part  of  NBAS  and observational part of  TIMP (P<0.05).  Association between other variables was statistically significant (P>0.05).
Conclusion: Some items of behavioral assessment  can be used to predict  the motor performance in low birth weight infants.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Auditory discrimination is one component of central auditory processing skills or auditory perception, that has an important role in acquisition and production of speech sounds. Auditory discrimination test is a tool for screening or diagnosis of auditory discrimination. The aim of this study is to investigate of auditory discrimination development process in 4-6 years old children in Semnan city. 

Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional survey was done on 200 normal 4-6 years old children in semnan city. Auditory discrimination skill was evaluated by Wepman auditory discrimination test (WADT) .The level of significancy in this study was 0.05.

 Results: Auditory discrimination skills based on percentage of 5 and 95 for 4 years old children were 20 and 36, 21.85 and 38 for 5 years old, 23.30 and 39.35 for 6 years old children. There was significant differences between 4 years old children with 5 and 6 years old children In auditory discrimination skill (P=0.003), but there  was no significant difference between 5 and 6 years old children(P=0.21). In addition, auditory discrimination test scores between boys and girls were not significant (P=0.34).

Conclusion: Results of this study showed that children ability in discrimination of sounds was increased with age.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Neck pain is one of the most prevalent disorders in the world and became a major public health problem. It is a common condition affecting as much as two-thirds or more of the general population at one point of time during their life. Cervical collars have been approved to be effective on neck pain and disability as a conservative treatment. Actually most of patients refused to use them because of their appearance and raise temperature by wearing them. So we introduced a new design of cervical collar called Open-design collar, it seems that could be accepted better by patients because of its different appearance. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the effect of Open-design collar on user’s acceptance and cervical range of motion in asymptomatic adults.

  

Materials and Methods: Seventy-two healthy subjects (36 women and 36 men) aged 18 to 29 years oldwere recruited for this study. Neck movements were measured using JTECH Medical Dual Digital Inclinometer . Active flexion, extension, right and left lateral flexion, and right and left rotation were assessed in each subject 3 times with and without Open-design collar. To assessthe acceptance of wearing Open-design collar, each subject was asked to fill an acceptance questionnaire of five criteria about the Open-design collar.

 

Results: Open-design collar significantly reduced cervical motions. It reduced flexion and extension on average by 78.24 ± 8.03%, 79.91 ± 8.02%, and right lateral flexion and left lateral flexion by 56.70 ± 13.91%, 54.34 ± 13.39% and right axial rotation and left axial rotation on average by 82.22 ± 5.48 and 82.60 ± 6.77.

  

Conclusion: Based on the data of the 72 subjects presented in this study, the Open-design collar adequately immobilized the cervical spine as a semi-rigid collar while the subjects accepted it by a good score.

Abstract

Background and Aim : Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder is a common disorder in children. ADHD leads to poor academic achievement. The purpose of this research was to study the effects of neurofeedback on academic achievement of 8-10 years old children with ADHD.

  

Material and Methods : It was a single subject study, was done on two 8 and 10 years old boys with ADHD with IQ=90-100. In addition to medication, each of them received 24 sessions of neurofeedback during 8 weeks. In each three sessions, one of the dictation or math tests was taken. Also the scores of class exam and final exam were used to assess treatment efficacy .

  

Results: Neuro feedback treatment is effective on increasing math and dictation scores of ADHD children in both clinic and school. Increase of the scores of final exams which were taken three months after treatment represents stability of treatment effect.

  

Conclusion: Neuro feedback treatment was an effective complementary method on increasing academic achievement in these children.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Perception of words is one of the parameters that examine to assess the language skills, due to lack of appropriate test in this field, informal assessing was done and evaluating of Perception of words has been challenged. The aim of this study is to design and determine the characteristics of Picture perceptive Objective Vocabulary Test for normal Persian-speaking 6-13 years-old children in order to examine the perception of words accurately.

Materials and Methods: In this methodological study that was done cross-sectional, a list of words that had the ability to visualize, prepared. To determine the content validity index, 7 speech therapists were surveyed and were chosen 240 images of words, finally this test was done on 118 children (57 girls, 61 boys) in seven age groups. Reliability of this test was assessed by repeatability and internal consistency and correlation between children’s scores and their age was determined by Spearman’s correlation.

Results: Content validity index  for total of 240 words were 1. In assessing reliability of this test Spearman’s correlation and internal consistency were 0.87 and 0.83 obtained respectively. There was a significant correlation between children’s ability to respond and their age (p<0.0005).

Conclusion: Pictures test for assessing the ability for perception of words in different categories of 6-13 years old children have appropriate content validity and reliability. In the age range of the study, child's ability to perception of words increases with age.
