Abstract

Background and Aim: Surveying faculty members can prove beneficial in the assessment of the university's performance in various domains, and the design and planning of suitable interventions. The current study assesses faculty members' opinions on the university's development programs.

Materials and Methods: One hundred and forty nine individuals completed the questionnaire in this cross-sectional study that was done through systematic sampling. The questionnaire covered demographic questions, professional specifications, faculty promotion criteria, sabbatical leaves, faculty participation in short-term educational programs, being in contact with graduates, recruiting foreign students, distant learning, processes involving research proposal approval, rewards and encouragement policies, faculty participation in health care management and distribution of budget among schools and hospitals.

Results: 71.8% of participants were male. The mean numbers of years of service in the university was 14.2 with a standard deviation of 7.5. Most participants were satisfied with the current status of promotion, processes involving research proposal approval and their participation in short-term educational programs. However most were not happy with the current status of sabbatical leaves.

Conclusion: Surveying through the methodical approach is a valuable tool in guiding senior university directors and its repetition and continuity can strengthen faculty participation and assess changing procedures.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Recognition of expectations and perceptions of customers is essential for quality improvement . The aim of this study was to determine the quality gap of educational services in the viewpoints of Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS) educational administrators, faculty members and medical students.

Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out at TUMS in 2012 among educational administrators, faculty members and students of medicine. A total of 384 students, 384 faculty members and 83 administrators were selected randomly. The five-dimensional SERVQUAL questionnaire was applied for data collection. The educational services quality gap was determined based on the differences between administrators , faculty members and students΄ perceptions and expectations. Descriptive and analytic (one-way ANOVA) statistics were performed using SPSS v.18.

Results: The results show that there is a negative quality in all five dimensions of educational services quality. Among all three groups of students, faculty members and administrators, the maximum means of quality gap pertained the dimension of “responsiveness” (-1.42,-1.17,-1.09, respectively) the minimum figures, however, were related to “confidence” (-1.07,-0.87,-0.77, respectively).

Conclusion : In all aspects, students, faculty members and administrators’ expectations were higher than their perception of the current situation. To reduce the gap, it is recommended that attention be paid to all aspects of service quality, particularly to the responsiveness dimension. Also, better planning to serve employees and enhancing their communication skills are suggested as ways to reduce the educational services quality gap.

Abstract

Background and Aim: To perform plans and achieve their goals, organizations are in need of different factors. One of the most important of which is the existence of an ideal organizational climate and participation. The main goal of this study is to determine the relationship between organizational climate and faculty members' participation in decision makings at Shahid Sadoughi University of Medical Sciences (SSUMS) in Yazd. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical study induced in 2011-2012. The research population comprised all 292 SSUMS faculty members. 72 members were selected through random-category sampling method. For data collection, two questionnaires included organizational climate and participation were used. The reliability of two questionnaires were 0.86 and 0.85, respectively, using Cronbach's alpha coefficient. The validity of both questionnaires were confirmed by expert panel. The data were analyzed using SPSS software version 18. For descriptive results, and used Pearson test for Analytical results. Results: The average of total participation rate for faculty members was computed to be 3.43. The total figure for organizational climate with a mean of 82.6 was obtained from the total average of micro-scale scores. A Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.418 showed that there was a direct relationship between organizational climate and faculty members' participation. Conclusion: In spite of weakness of counselling system and team work system, and approach diversity between the faculty members, they are enthusiastic to cooperate to solve the university problems. Therefore we suggest more financial and spiritual mechanisms for autonomy of the faculty members.

Abstract

Background and Aim: In educational systems, the burnout of faculty members and lecturers is a big problem that affects their interaction with students. Therefore, this research aims to determine the rate of burnout syndrome among the lecturers and faculty members in a school in Tehran University of Medical Sciences (TUMS).
Materials and Methods: This study was a descriptive-analytical and cross-sectional research performed by Maslach′s burnout questionnaire among 40 academic members and lecturers selected by census method. The data were analyzed by SPSS software version 20.
Results: The mean age of respondents was 48±18 years. Some (42.5%) of the subjects had 21-30 years of educational work experience. The emotional burnout of the participants was at a high level in this study. However, in the dimension of depersonalization disorder, it was moderate. Meanwhile, their job performance was below moderate. Also, there was a significant correlation between emotional burnout and gender (P=0.043) and between depersonalization disorder and executive work experience (P=0.043).
Conclusion: Due to the remarkable high frequency of job burnout among faculty members and lecturers, holding in-person meetings, the analysis and pathology of causes of burnout, and application of supportive mechanisms are recommended to improve their job performance.

Abstract

Background and Aim: The purpose of the present study was to investigate the scientific outputs of the faculty members of the information science and science departments of Iranian state universities in the Science Research Network and its impact on their scientific outputs in databases and search engines.
Materials and Methods: This study was applied in terms of purpose, survey methodology and Altmetrics approach. The statistical population of the study consisted of 118 faculty members in the field of information science and social sciences active in Social- Scientific Network from 29 Governmental universities in the country. Pearson correlation coefficient, independent t-test, Kruskal-Wallis were used for data analysis.
Results: The findings showed that the authors of Isfahan, Tehran University of Medical Siences and Shahid Chamran of Ahvaz Universities are the most active members of the faculty in ResearchGate in terms of Altmetrics characteristics. In terms of RG score, faculty members with associate's degree perform better than the others. There is also a positive correlation between the Altmetrics indicators of ResearchGate network and the scientometric indicators of Scopus citation database and Google Scholar.
Conclusion: Since there was a positive correlation between Altmetrics indexes in ResearchGate with Scinientometrics indexes in Google Scholar and Scopus, so this leads to the visibility of their scientific work and their improvement of citation indexes in databases.

Abstract

Background and Aim: The open peer review process, which is one of the peer-reviewed methods in journals, has been accepted in scientific forums. The aim of this study was to investigate the points of view of university faculty members about the open peer review process of journal articles.
Materials and Methods: The study used a descriptive survey. The sample size was calculated using the Cochran’s formula of 150 people out of a total of 246 faculty members of Alborz University of Medical Sciences. The research tool was a questionnaire designed based on the existing literature. Data were analyzed by SPSS software using descriptive statistics and paired t-test.
Results: The results showed that the participants’ views on “approaches and processes of open peer review” with 3.48 mean score and “benefits of open peer review” with mean score of 3.70 were relatively desirable. Among the open peer review styles, participants preferred the “open reporting” and “data peer review” styles, respectively. Participants’ views on the “advantages and disadvantages of open peer review” also indicated that participants agreed with most of the components presented in this area. There was also a statistically significant difference between the mean score of participants’ views on the traditional peer review process and open peer review (P<0.05).
Conclusion: Open peer review is relatively accepted among the faculty members of Alborz University of Medical Sciences. As the acceptance of this type of peer review increases among the scientific community, paying attention to the attitudes and views related to the open peer review process can improve the quality of articles and research published in scientific journals.
