The effect of maternal dietary iron restriction during pregnancy and or latation on the iron, copper and zinc contents of livers in maternal rats and their offsprings at birth and at 18 days of age were studied. At parturition dams fed the iron – deficient diet and their newborns had a significantly lower liver reserves of iron and copper and a significantly higher ratio of zinc / copper in liver than groups fed the control diet. Storage iron was significantly lower and copper was significantly higher at the end of lactation in dams fed an iron – deficient diet during lactation (C-D) or during pregnancy and lactation (D-D) than when a control diet was fed. The only significant differences in the ratio of Zinc / copper in liver was found between the dams which were fed a deficient diet during the other (C-D) and (D-C). Pups of dams fed the deficient diet during both period, pregnancy and lactation, had significantly lower liver reservs of iron, higher level of copper, lower level of zinc and ratio of zinc/ copper in liver than the other groups. |
