AbstractOrallichen planus (OLP) is a potentially malignant lesion. This study was designedto assess the expression of P53, PCNA, MMP-2, and MMP-9 in dysplastic OLP(DOLP), erosive OLP (EOLP), non-erosive OLP (NEOLP), benign inflammatoryhyperplasia (BIH) of the oral mucosa, and normal mucosa (NM) in an attempt toindentify molecular risk factors for dysplastic progression. 113 specimensincluding 11 DOLPs, 25 EOLPs, 39 NEOLPs, 32 BIH and 6 NM were included. Allsamples were stained with the P53, PCNA, MMP-2, and MMP-9 monoclonal antibodiesafter proper treatment. The highest expression of p53, MMP-2 and MMP- 9 wasobserved in DOLP. The highest expression of PCNA was seen in NEOLP.Significantly higher expression of P53 was noted in the spinosum layer of DOLPscompared to non-dysplastic OLP. There was no significant difference betweendysplastic and non-dysplastic OLP in the expression of PCNA, MMP-2, or MMP-9markers. Gradual increase in expression of P53, PCNA, MMP-2 and MMP-9 fromnormal oral mucosa to OLP was observed. Over expression of P53 in the spinosumlayer of the epithelium was the only marker associated with dysplastic changesin OLP. |
