Introduction: Migraine and tension type headache have been the most common headache in every society, of which most of applicants go to general and neurological out patient department. To date it has been proved that most of the chronic headaches are accompanied with psychological and moral affair, in a way they have mutual effects and even they have presented common etiology. So it was indispensable in our society to estimate the distribution of anxiety and depression for applicant having migraine and tension headache due to its special characteristics and this distribution should be compared to similar people who are not suffering from headache. If come up to reasonable comparison, we can logically present solutions which screen patients and correct remedial methods in future. Material and methods: In a case-control study which has launch from march to November 2003, one hundred and twenty five patients those who were suffering from migraine and tension headache referring to neurology outpatient department and 125 control group have been studied in term of depression and anxiety and the results were compared using student's t-test and p<0.05 were considered statistically significant. All analysis was performed using SPSS software. Results : In this study (29.6% male and 70.4 female) the average age was 26. Among of patients 16% had migraine with aura and 45% migraine without aura and 45% had tension headache. The prevalence of depression in case group was 65.2% vs 52.8 in control group. The severity of depression in case group was moderate in 36% vs 47.2% without depression. The Prevalence of anxiety in case group 76.6% vs 52% in control group. Comparison with two group indicate that depression and anxiety more prevalent in case group (p<0.001) but there is no difference between in prevalence of depression in migraine with aura compare with control group (0.276). Discussion: Our results indicate that migraine and tension headache can often be accompanied by comorbid anxiety and/or depression, as well as increase in severity and consistency of headache. In addition, screening of patients can cause decreas in medical costs and chronicity of headache. Keyword: Migraine, Tension Type Headache, Anra, Depression, Anxiety |
