Abstract

Background: We conducted this study To find relationship between maternal glucose challenge test (GCT) levels and fetal body weight (BW).
Materials and Methods: We analyzed five hundred women with singleton pregnancy, who had GCT at 24-28 week during pregnancy. All of them had no history of hypertension and diabetes mellitus or other medical disease before pregnancy or during previous pregnancy, and all of them had weight gain appropriate with their pre pregnancy body mass index (BMI). Also nobody had history of drug abuse or smoking. In this descriptive–analytic survey, maternal age, gravidity, BMI,GCT level ,gestational age (GA) , sex of neonate, rout of delivery , newborn weight and apgar score were evaluated .The student’s T-test and logistic regression were used for statistical analysis. We used Pearson coefficient and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and chi-square test for determination GCT threshold.
Results: We found rate of small for gestational age (SGA) in newborns statistically was significant, who their maternal GCT level was ≤ 80mg/dl, P value: 0/018, specificity 89%, sensitivity 58% and confidence interval: 95% (0/162-0/545).
Conclusion: Low GCT level has association with SGA and can be used as a predictive test and may be an indication for dietary intervention.

Abstract

In the recent years, Salmonella enterica subspecies. Enterica serovar enteritidis is a major cause of gastroenteritis and food poisoning in the worldwide.  Different genus of salmonella is increasingly being resistant to common antibiotics. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency and the antibiotic resistance patterns of Salmonella enterica isolated from medical health centers in Tehran.

Methods: In this descriptive cross- sectional study from April to December 2008, 1950 fecal specimens from children with diarrhea were cultivated to identify Salmonella enteritidis. We used Clinical and Laboratory Standard Institute (CLSI) protocol to determine resistance patern of the isolates to 16 different antibiotics.

Results: In this study, out of 26 isolates 14(54%) were S. enteritidis, 2(8%) S. para B, 6(23%) S. para C, 3(11%) S. arizonea and 1(4%) S. para A. all of them were sensitive to ceftazidime, cephalexin, cefotaxime, ceftiraxone, ciprofloxacin, imipenem, meropenem, gentamicin and colistin sulfate. All of the isolates were resistant to nitrofurantoin whereas 71.4% of them were resistant to nalidixic acid.

Conclusions: The most prevalent isolated salmonella was S.enteritidis. According to high sensivity of these isolates to cephalosporin and flourqouinolon family, they can used as infective treatment for salmonellosis infections.

Abstract

Diabetes causes learning and memory deficits. In this study we hypothesized that chronic treatment with ascorbic acid (100mg/kg, p.o) would affect on the passive avoidance learning (PAL) and memory in control and streptozocin-induced diabetic rats.
Methods: Diabetes was induced by a single i.p. injection of STZ (60mg/kg). The rats were considered diabetic if plasma glucose levels exceeded 250mg/dl on three days after STZ injection. Treatment was begun at the onset of hyperglycemia. PAL was assessed 30 days later. Retention test was done 24 h after training. At the end, animals were weighted and blood samples were drawn for plasma glucose measurement.
Results: Diabetes caused impairment in acquisition and retrieval processes of PAL and memory in rats. Ascorbic acid treatment improved learning and memory in control rats and reversed learning and memory deficits in diabetic rats. Ascorbic acid administration also improved the body weight loss and hyperglycemia of diabetics. Hypoglycemic and antioxidant properties of the vitamin may be involved in the memory improving effects of such treatment.
Conclusion: These results show that ascorbic acid administration to rats for 30 days from onset of diabetes alleviated the negative influence of diabetes on learning and memory. Comparing with other nootropic drugs, vitamins have fewer side effects. Therefore, this regimen may provide a new potential alternative for prevention of the impaired cognitive functions associated with diabetes after confirming by clinical trials.

Abstract

Background: Beta- lactamase enzymes are the most important resistant factors to beta lactam antibiotics among gram negative bacteria. Nowadays, the prevalence of beta- lactamase infection is increasing worldwide and drawn the scientists attention as an important subject. Due to high prevalence of bacteria contained TEM beta lactamase and AmpC enzymes, using molecular methods especially designing universal primers could be valuable to detect all of them. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of TEM and AmpC (Dha and MOX) beta- lactamase genes using universal primers.

Methods: A total of 500 clinical specimens from various Hospitals in Tehran, Iran were collected and analyzed for E. coli based on biochemical tests. These clinical specimens were also screened by Disk diffusion agar, combined disk method and PCR to detect the samples producing extended- spectrum beta- lactamase.

Results: Overall 200 isolates of Escherichia coli were collected from the 500 clinical specimens out of which 128(64%) isolates were positive by PCR assay and showed bla- TEM, bla- AmpC (Dha, MOX) genes, 74(57.8%) and 5(3.9%) to have bla- TEM and bla Dha, respectively. Mox gene was not detected in any of the specimens.

Conclusions: Our results revealed that using the molecular methods with phenotype methods is very essential for complete detection of Beta- lactamases. There is the need for updating the treatment protocol because the prevalence of this resistance is increasing.

Abstract

Background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the most common cause of anovulatory infertility. Metformin which is effectively used for the treatment of anovulatory PCOS improves pregnancy rate and endometrial receptivity and reduces the risk of miscarriage. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of metformin on the endometrium, the number of fetuses and hormonal levels of PCOS rats. Methods: Forty female adult Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned randomly into four equal groups. Group I: control rats, group II: rats receiving metformin (150 mg/kg/day), group III: Estradiol Valerate-induced PCOS rats (4 mg/rat) and group IV: induced PCOS rats receiving metformin. Body weight and serum levels of glucose, LH, FSH, testosterone, progesterone and estradiol were measured. Following mating, each group was divided into two subgroups and the rats were sacrificed on the 5th and 15th day of gestation to evaluate endometrial reaction to implantation and fetus count, respectively. Results: Hormone assay showed a significant increase in testosterone, estradiol, LH, FSH and blood glucose levels in group III compared to the controls (P≤0.01) and a significant decrease in blood glucose in group IV versus group III (P≤0.01). Progesterone concentration had no significant differences between groups III and the controls. Weight was higher in group III than group I but it had no decrease after metformin administration. No significant differences were detected regarding implantation rate and number of fetuses in all rats. Conclusion: Metformin has significant effects on pregnancy rate and the hormonal and blood glucose levels of Estradiol Valerate-induced PCOS rats.

Background: With respect to the importance of hepatitis B vaccination of high-risk groups such as prisoners, this study was performed to assess the comparability of a short-course double-dose vaccination schedule with the standard 3-dose schedule.
Methods : Within a randomized clinical trial, a short-course vaccination (at months 0 and 1) with 20 microgram (double-dose) doses of the vaccine was compared to the standard method of hepatitis B vaccination (at months 0, 1 and 6, with 10-microgram doses) in 100 prisoners in Zahedan city in Iran in 2009. We made sure the sera from all the individuals were negative for markers of previous hepatitis B infection. Subsequently serum from all the participants was tested for anti-HBs antibody 1, 2 and 7 months after the first dose of vaccination.
Results : Seroconversion rates (HBsAb>10 mIU/ml) 1, 2 and 7 months after the first dose of vaccination were similar in the routine (11%, 79% and 94%, respectively) relative to the double-dose group (26%, 95% and 93 %, respectively). The mean values of anti-HBs antibody titers were similar in the 1st and 2nd months for the two groups but it was significantly higher (P=0.002) in the routine dose (514 mIU/ml) versus the double-dose group (130 mIU/mL), in the 7th month.
Conclusion: Demonstrating comparable results with the standard 3-dose schedule, it seems that short-term double-dose vaccination for hepatitis B is a safe and acceptable method for use in high-risk groups such as prisoners.

Abstract

Background: Bone is one of the most common sites of metastatic disease in malignancies. Many of the cases are asymptomatic and may be diagnosed in primary or secondary follow-up, but in symptomatic cases pain is the prominent symptom which is mostly exaggerated at nights. The improved survival of cancer patients with bony metastases in recent years, specially in breast and prostate cancer, has given a greater importance to the careful choice of treatments in this setting. This can lead to a better quality of life, lower treatment cost, prevention of disabilities, less delay in primary cancer therapies, and decrease of life-threatening events for the patients. Here we review the metastatic disease of the bone and its treatments, with emphasis on local and systemic radiation therapy. Current literature about bone metastasis and its treatments was reviewed through a search of available databases on internet for papers published in 1995-2013. Special attention was given to the research trials and studies performed by the authors on this setting. Treatment of bone metastases consist of analgesics, radiotherapy, surgery and bisphosphonates. Control of bone metastases is a challenging process, necessitating a multi-disciplinary approach and teamwork between the treating physicians. Radiotherapy is the most useful modality for this purpose in oncology, given both as a local and systemic therapy. We hope that this review would be able to help in choosing the best treatment option for this common palliative situation in Iranian cancer patients.

Abstract

Background: Recently the use of “two tier" grading system in which ovarian serous carcinoma was classified as low-grade or high-grade in comparing to preceding system has improved authority in prognosis and survival. This approach is simplistic, reproducible, and based on biologic evidence. In this study, we reclassified ovarian serous carcinoma by a new two-tier system for grading and then evaluation of P53 expression in these tumors by immunohistochemistry method. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 32 cases of ovarian serous carcinoma with previous diagnosis of well differentiated (eight cases) and moderate to poorly differentiated serous carcinoma (24 cases) and according "two tier" grading system in low-grade vs. high-grade serous carcinoma reclassified. Subsequntly all cases immunostained by P53 marker. Also clinical data related to survival of patients (with or without recurrence of tumor and death) and paraclinical findings such as presurgical blood serum level of CA125 are gathered. Results: Out of total eight patients with previously diagnosis well diferentiated serous carcinoma and of 24 patients with moderate to poorly differentiated serous carcinoma reclassified as low-grade and high-grade ovarian serous carcinoma respectively and a statistically significant difference was found between two groups. (P<0.005) Also of total 24 cases with high grade serous carcinoma, in 12 cases (54%) P53 immunostaining was detected but in non of all low grade serous carcinoma was seen. All 8 low grade serous carcinoma were alive without recurrence of tumor. In 10 and 12 out of 24 cases with high grade serous carcinoma recurrence of tumor and death were seen respectively. Conclusion: Since the presence of P53 negative expression in all of low-grade serous carcinoma by immunostaining and low-grade serous carcinoma accounts for small pupulation of all ovarian serous carcinoma and also few cases in our study, we did not find significant differences between P53 expression and survival in two low-grade vs high-grade serous carcinoma groups.

Abstract

Background: Spontaneous hepatic rupture is a rare condition during pregnancy. Pregnant women with Hemolysis, Elevated Liver enzymes and Low Platelete count (HELLP) syndrome are more susceptible to hepatic rupture. It can occur per 40000 to 250000 pregnancies with high mortality and morbidity. There is no agreement on the best approach to this severe pregnancy complication. This is the case report of a spontaneous hepatic rupture associated with HELLP syndrome during pregnancy which occurred for the first time in the West Azerbaijan Province, Iran. Case Presentation: A 33 years old lady gravida 6, 3 intrauterine fetal deaths, 2 neonatal deaths at 30th weeks of gestation was admitted for preeclampsia. On admission, she had thrombocytopenia and elevated liver enzyme. Cesarean section was performed due to fetal distress and a preterm fetus was born. Inspection of the abdomen revealed a large hematoma in the right liver lobe associated with rupture of the capsule. Liver packing was performed by general surgeon and the abdomen was closed without repairing of fascia. In the 2nd day after operation, the patient was oriented but the abdomen reopened because of very low blood pressure. There was no severe liver hemorrhage so the liver was packed again with many surgicels. She developed acute kidney and liver failure, pleural effusion and a major coagulopathy post-operatively. Three weeks after surgery the abdomen was reopened for dehiscence and fascia was closed. The patient discharged after 40 days. Conclusion: Spontaneous liver rupture associated with HELLP syndrome is a rare and life-threatening complication of pregnancy. Unruptured liver hematoma is also a rare condition during pregnancy with a very difficult diagnosis. Using clinical diagnostic tests such as CT scan or MRI would be helpful to improve clinical outcomes.

Abstract

Background: One of the main reasons of hemorrhagic fevers is Ebola. The high rate of mortality and lack of definite treatment have been caused this infection to be a serious problem in the world. Ebola, especially in the early stages, when causes symptoms such as fever, anorexia and nausea, can be confused with malaria infection and conversely, severe malaria with Ebola. Plasmodium falciparum is an important cause of severe malaria that more than other types of plasmodium confused with Ebola. Case presentation: The patient is a 54-year-old man who had gone to Sudan about 8 months ago. The patient reported that fever, chills and headache had been started one week before traveling from Sudan to Iran and hematuria was added to his symptoms in third week of illness in Iran. He was referred to the emergency department with probable diagnosis of Ebola. Plasmodium falciparum gametocytes were revealed in his peripheral blood smear. Finally, he was treated with Coartem (artemether/lumefantrine) for malaria and after clinical improvement discharged to home with good condition. Conclusion: Ebola should be suspected in every patient with fever and a history of traveling to endemic areas. Considering the fact that in most areas where Ebola is endemic also malaria is common, lack of clinical suspicion to malaria causes that clinicians mistake malaria with Ebola. Necessary laboratory tests to rule out important differential diagnoses in patients with suspected Ebola virus contains: Peripheral blood smear for malarial parasite and blood culture and blood cell counts to investigate typhoid fever and other bacterial infections. Therefore, malaria should be considered as an important differential diagnosis in every patient suspected with Ebola.

Abstract

Background: This study investigated compatibility between post chemoradiation magnetic resonance images and histologic findings after operation and chemoradiation in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer.

Methods: In this prospective study, 63 patients referred to Cancer Institute of Emam Khomeini Hospital, Tehran, Iran, from October 2011 to October 2013 with locally advanced rectal cancer receiving neoadjuvant chemoradiation (50.4 Gy external beam radiation with concomitant capecitabine 825 mg/m2 PO twice a day with or without 60 mg/m2 oxaliplatin weekly). Patients had an MRI before chemoradiation and MRI assessment were used to identify Tumor (T) and lymph node (N) staging by an experienced radiologist. Patients were recommended to repeat MRI after surgery but it was not obligatory. Findings of post chemoradiation MRI and histopathologic reports were compared. Downstaging was defined as at least one stage decrease in T or N in histopathologic report comparing to their first MRI, on condition of no sign of disease progression.

Results: 32 patients (50.79%) had T downstaging and 36 of them (57.14%) showed N downstaging: none had disease progression. In this study MRI had an accuracy of 55.5% for rectal tumor (T) restaging after chemoradiation comparing to pathology. MRI sensitivity for T restaging was 33.3% to 83.3%.  There was a higher possibility to have errors in restaging of T1-2 stages. Specificity of MRI for T restaging was higher than its sensitivity, 66.6%. In this study lymph node involvement (N) was determined according to morphology and size. MRI has an accuracy of 42.8% for detecting lymph node involvement. Its sensitivity and specificity for N restaging were 50% and 66.6% respectively. All patients had MRI before chemoradiation, although 21 of them repeated MRI after chemoradiation since it was not mandatory. 19 of these 21 patients underwent surgery.

Conclusion: Although MRI is a suitable imaging for staging locally advanced rectal cancer its use for restaging after chemoradiation is under question. According to this study, MRI accuracy rates for both T and N restaging were below the rates of previous studies.

Abstract

Background: We retrospectively compared the clinical outcome of post-cardiac surgery tracheal extubation between patients extubated with a lower than normal pH and patients extubated according to our routine institutional protocol. Our main goal was to clarify that strict adherence to the current criteria is dispensable.

Methods: In this retrospective cohort study, we recruited 256 patients who met our study criteria and divided them into the exposed group (n= 95) and the control group (n= 161). The inclusion criteria consisted of coronary artery bypass grafting alone and age> 18 years. The exclusion criteria comprised the use of corticosteroids in the preceding 2 weeks, Serum creatinine (SCr)> 2 mg/dL, uncontrolled diabetes, liver dysfunction, Glasgow coma scale <13, and acetazolamide and sodium bicarbonate use. The arterial blood gas (ABG) characteristics before and 6 hours after extubation, extubation failure rate, length of stay in the in ICU, length of stay in the hospital and mortality were compared between the two groups.

Results: In the control group, the males outnumbered the females and the ejection fraction was higher relative to that in the exposure group (P= 0.01 and P= 0.02, respectively). There were more patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in the exposure group (P< 0.005) and also the euroSCORE was higher (P< 0.002). There were no significant differences between the groups regarding the ABG values at the time of ICU admission. Significantly higher levels of FiO2 and PaCO2 (P< 0.001 for both) as well as lower HCO3 and pH (P< 0.001 for both) were observed in the exposure group immediately before extubation. Following extubation, there was a significant increase in pH and a significant reduction in FiO2 need in the exposure group (P< 0.001 for both). The extubation failure rate, length of stay in the in ICU, length of stay in the hospital, and mortality rate were not different between the 2 groups.

Conclusion: The patients with a lower than normal pH, tracheal extubated at the discretion of the ICU anesthesiologist did not have a clinical outcome worse than that of the patients extubated in accordance with our routine institutional protocol.

Abstract

Background: The herpes simplex viruses cause a variety of clinical illnesses that are painful and often distressing. To control the infection, the development of an effective vaccine that prevents or reduces the primary and recurrent infections would be of great significance. With considering to immunological changes following an acute endurance exercise, the purpose of this study was to assess adjuvant effects of an acute endurance exercise in first herpes simplex virus 1 vaccine injection and its booster shots on interleukin-10 cytokine and granzyme B levels.
Methods: This experimental study was carried out in Tarbiat Modares University during May to October 2016. 32 BALB/c mice were divided into 4 groups: control, vaccine, vaccine plus an acute exercise in first injection and vaccine plus an acute endurance exercise in first injection and booster shots. Mice without or with access to acute endurance exercise were immunized intramuscularly with inactivated KOS strain of HSV-1. Two weeks after three booster shots of vaccine, interleukin-10 and granzyme B levels were determined in spleen cell culture with enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method.
Results: This study was undertaken to test the hypothesis that an acute endurance exercise as an adjuvant in herpes simplex virus 1 vaccine can change interleukin-10 cytokine and granzyme B levels in mouse model. The result of this study showed significant differences between groups in interleukin-10 and granzyme B levels (P=0.001). Increasing in granzyme B levels with concurrent decreases in interleukin-10 levels was observed following using vaccine plus acute exercise in first injection of vaccine and booster shots.
Conclusion: It is suggested that exercise may stimulate parameters related to cellular immunity and hence decrease the risk of infection decreased levels of interleukin-10 in experimental group that had vaccine plus acute exercise in the first injection of vaccine and booster shots as an adjuvant was observed. These results demonstrate alternation of T helper 2 cells function and improve of cell immunity for protection against herpes simplex virus 1 infections.

Abstract

Background: Recent evidence suggests that regular exercise training is effective in treating various aspects of cancer. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the effect of 8 weeks of aerobic interval training on monocarboxylate transporter 1 (MCT1) protein and expression of p53 gene in tumor of colon cancer mice.
Methods: The present study was conducted experimentally from May to October 2014 at the Exercise Physiology Research Center of Baqiyatallah University of Medical Sciences, Tehran, Iran. Twenty BALB/c mice of age 3 weekly with a mean weight of 17.6±1.4 grams were selected and randomly divided into 4 groups: control (N=5), interval training (N=5), colon tumor (N=5) and interval training+colon tumor (N=5). The cancer was induced by subcutaneous injection of a carcinogenic azoxymethane (10 mg/kg) once a week for three weeks, and aerobic exercise was performed with rodent treadmill for 8 weeks and 5 days a week. Forty-eight hours after the last training session, the mice were cleared and colon removed. Measurement of MCT1 protein was performed by ELISA and commercial kits (ZellBio, Germany). Real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was used to determine the relative expression of p53 gene. Data were analyzed by Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney U tests.
Results: The results showed a significant increase in MCT1 protein (P< 0.01) and significant reductions in p53 gene expression (P< 0.001) in a colon tumor group compared to other groups. Also, there was a significant decrease in the level of MCT1 protein (P< 0.01) and significant increase in p53 gene expression (P< 0.001) in the exercise training group and exercise training+colon tumor group compared to control group and the tumor group was observed.
Conclusion: The findings of the study showed that aerobic interval training reduced the protein content of MCT1 and increased the expression of p53 gene (as a tumor inhibitor) in the tumor of colon cancer mice. These factors are portions of the mechanisms involved in cancer cell metabolism by which aerobic interval training shows part of its therapeutic effect in colon cancer.

Abstract

Background: Ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cancer-related cause of death in women worldwide and is often diagnosed at advanced stages. Regarding the low sensitivity and specificity of the currently available diagnostic techniques, in the present study, we aimed to evaluate the accuracy of RMI and ROMA indexes and comparing these two indexes with CA-125 and HE4 parameters for the diagnosis and differentiation between benign and malignant ovarian tumors. Also, we determined the optimal cut-off level of these markers in patients who attended Arash Women’s Hospital.
Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we included 137 women with ovarian mass who were attended the gynecology clinic of Arash Women's Hospital, Tehran, Iran (April 2017-April 2019), and were eligible according to the inclusion criteria. We included patients with an adnexal mass over 3 cm. Our exclusion criteria were as the following: pregnancy, age under 18 and over 90 years, taking hormonal agents, renal failure, suspected ovarian torsion, ovarian cancer and taking antibiotics, nitric oxide compounds, and heavy metals. Based on serum CA125, HE4, and ultrasound findings, ROMA and RMI indexes were determined for each patient, and the sensitivity and specificity of HE4, RMI, ROMA, and CA125 were compared with the result of the operative histopathologic assessment.
Results: According to the area under the ROC curve, regardless of the patients' menopausal status, the highest diagnostic value was dedicated to RMI with 89% under the curve area and 95% confidence interval (81.6-96.4%). Diagnostic values of other markers were as the following: 87.7%(95%CI=80.3-95%) for HE4, 87.3(95%CI=79.1-95.4%) for CA125, and 86.2%(95%CI=78.7-93.6%) for ROMA. In terms of menopausal status, HE4 had the highest diagnostic value in premenopausal patients, while in the menopausal group CA125 had the highest diagnostic value.
Conclusion: Measurement of HE4 before menopause and CA125 during menopause seems to be helpful in the early detection of ovarian cancers in women with ovarian masses.

Abstract

Background: coronavirus disease (COVID-19) as an emerging infectious disease started in China in 2019. By increasing the number of patients and spreading to all countries, it was considered a pandemic disease. COVID-19 became an international concern. Patients affected by coronavirus (SARS-Cov-2) reported different symptoms. Most signs and symptoms were related to the respiratory system. To our knowledge, the onset of Covid-19 with chronic hiccups was reported in two patients. The aim of this study was to assess the onset of symptoms of Covid-19 disease in patients in a hospital in Zabol, Iran.
Methods: This study is a retrospective descriptive cross-sectional study which was performed from March to June 2021. The study setting was a hospital affiliated with Zabol Medical University. The study population included all patients diagnosed with Covid-19. A total of 350 patients were selected by the census. For data gathering, we used Patient’s records including demographic information, clinical examination records, and para-clinical tests results. We used descriptive statistics and SPSS ver. 20 for data analysis and management.
Results: A total of 350 patients were diagnosed with Covid-19. The number of 232 (66.28%) patients were hospitalized for receiving hospital care. 118(33.72%) were recommended to stay at home and receive care. Inpatients included 119(51.29%) male and 113(48.71%) female. The mean age of patients was 41.75(±15.6) years. The main complaint of 349(99.71%) patients was respiratory problems. A 44-year-old male patient with a history of 8 years of diabetes had chronic hiccups.
Conclusion: according to our findings, unexpected signs and symptoms should be considered during the pandemic event. By identifying different symptoms of the disease, the provision of health services from diagnosis to care and treatment is improved. Since Covid-19 disease is an emerging disease and all its dimensions have not been identified yet, a thorough examination of patients who are referred to medical centers can help identify and reporting different cases.

Abstract

Background: Salmonella enterica subspecies enterica serotype Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis) is one of the leading causes of food-borne infections associated with the consumption of contaminated food products of animal origin in humans. gastroenteritis due to Salmonella is usually a self-limiting disease and does not require antibiotic therapy. However, antibiotic treatment for salmonellosis may be lifesaving for patients with severe infections.The objective of the present study was to examine antimicrobial resistance and determine its genetic basis in recently isolated S.Enteritidis strains.
Methods: During this study, in a cross-sectional descriptive study, 44 isolates of Salmonella enteritidis from human sources were investigated between September 2021 and September 2022.. After identification of the isolates using phenotypic and molecular methods by Multoplex-PCR, antibiotic resistance testing was performed according CLSI 2023. The strains were examined for the presence of qnrA,qnrB,qnrS and gyrA resistance genes by PCR.
Results:  In a cross-sectional descriptive study, 44 isolates of Salmonella Enteritidis from human sources were investigated between September 2022 and September 2023. 100% of the strains were sensitive to imipenem and meropenem, and the sensitivity to the antibiotics ceftriaxone, ceftazidime, and cefotaxime were 93.2%, 90.9%, and 94.1%, respectively. 81.8% of isolates were sensitive to cotrimoxazole, sensitivity to ampicillin was 84.1%. Only 9.1% of isolates were sensitive to ciprofloxacin. Based on MIC results, 16 isolates had MIC between 0.002 and 0.064 and were placed in the sensitive area. 28 isolates had MIC between 0.125 and 0.5 and were placed in the area of reduced sensitivity. None of the strains resistant to disk diffusion method were resistant to MIC method. qnrA, qnrB and qnrS genes were not observed among ciprofloxacin resistant strains. All nalidixic acid resistant strains had gyrA gene.
Conclusion: In general, it was shown in this study that the resistance to the fluoroquinolone family is increasing among Salmonella Enteritidis isolates. On the other hand, we see a decrease in the sensitivity and prevalence of strains resistant to broad-spectrum cephalosporins among serovar Enteritidis, which is the drug of choice for extraintestinal infections.
