Abstract

Background: Psychologists have been thinking that some personality types may have a higher IQ comparing with the other types, and this could be considered as a general belief. Eysenck, the eminent British psychologist, described the introverted people to have a higher. Intelligence comparing with the extroverted people.

Materials and Methods: We maintain two objectives from this study. Firstly if there is a relation between the IQ and personality types or not and secondly the mean IQ of which group is higher and thirdly, what is the relation between sexes.

Results: 297 students were selected randomly from Tabriz University and Tabriz Medical Sciences University. Every examination was given both Raven IQ test and Eysenck personality inventory and examination answered the both tests at the same time. Both tests were evaluated by the standard scoring system. The results of both tests were extracted then statistical evaluations ofx and t-test were done. No significant and meaningful relation was found between IQ and personality types pf Eysenck ( introversion- extroversion, neuroticism, emotion stability) among male and female students. Also introverted students and extroverted students did not have significant differences in the mean of IQ.

Conclusion: Altogether these kinds of findings seem to be interesting, judging about psychological and behavioral characteristic of people needs more studies, and a single IQ or personality test is not sufficient. Therefore reaching an exact conclusion as a scientific fact will be possible by further researches.

Abstract

Background: As future health care providers, medical students should be aware of the relationship between health and physical fitness, giving them an advantage toward attaining proper physical fitness. The exercise and fitness habits of first-year medical students in Iran are not known. This study examines the relationship between the body mass index (BMI) of an unselected group of first-year medical students and their personal physical fitness.
Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 513 first-year medical students were evaluated. BMI, skin folds (triceps, biceps, suprailiac and subscapular) and physical fitness were assessed in all students. Fitness was evaluated by the Eurofit test, which included body composition, cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, muscular endurance, muscular strength, power, balance and agility. The software SPSS (version 11) and Pearson's correlation were used for statistical analysis.
Results: The group surveyed was 67.8% female and 32.2% male, and 97.2% were entering medical school in 2004. The mean weight of the students was 60.1 kg, mean height was 163.9 cm and the mean BMI was 22.3 kg/m2. Underweight status (BMI<20) was observed in 27.1% of the subjects, 16.1% were overweight (2530). Overweight and obesity in males was higher than in females. The total physical fitness score in female students was better than that of male students. We found a negative correlation between physical fitness and weight, BMI, body fat and wrist to hip ratio in both genders. In addition, a positive correlation exits between hip circumference and physical fitness in both groups.
Conclusions: This study suggests that academically competitive premedical students may not be involved in physical activity. Medical students should be encouraged to maintain a good BMI and perform physical exercise.

Abstract

Background: To assess patient' reaction towards bedside teaching in the nephrology ward of Imam Khomeini Hospital Complex (Tehran) and to identify the factors that may influence it.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in the nephrology ward of Imam Khomeini Hospital Complex from march to September, 2014. All inpatients present on the day of the study were interviewed using a structured questionnaire.

Results: 146 patients were examined in this study that 62 patients (42.5%) were women and 84 cases (57.5%) were men. 112 (76.7%) of patients had a good feeling about the training to physicians. The behavior of students was evaluated respectful by 132 individuals (90.4% of patients). Total number of 106 individuals (72.6% of patients) had trusted to the health care team and 120 people (82.2% of patients) knew that the physicians’ behaviors are associated with the respect to their religious beliefs. Not being same sex of the examiners was important for 47 individuals (32.2% of patients). The number of 123 cases (84.2% of patients) evaluated the physicians' behavior with respect to their privacy. The number of 119 individuals (81.5% of patients) received their responses from the examiners. Statistical tests indicate a significant relationship between the respectful behavior of students with patient and good feeling about training to physicians, so that the 95.5% of people who have seen the respectful behavior of students to oneself had a good feeling about training to physicians (P˂0.001). The relationship between the presence of teacher with students and good feeling on training to physicians was significant (P=0.013). Positive feeling about practicing physicians was associated with patient age. So the age average of people who feel good about practicing physicians was significantly lower than the other people (47.2±17 versus 55.6±18 and P=0.028).

Conclusion: The relationship between respectful behavior and presence of teacher with students and age and good feeling on training to physicians was significant.

Abstract

Background: The causes of Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) (the most common psychological disorder is still unknown. The main symptoms include impulsivity, hyperactivity and attention deficit. Some studies have shown the relationship between ADHD and oxidative stress, and yet some researches have shown the effects on vitamin D on the antioxidants level. This research intends to identify the effect of vitamin D supplementation on the antioxidant serum level in 6-13 years old children with ADHD.
Methods: This double blind clinical trial was conducted in Isfahan city, the center of Iran, from October 2015 to February 2016. The sample included 35 subjects of both groups that were randomly selected among 6-13 years old children with ADHD diagnosed by pediatric psychologist. The intervention group consumed 1000 IU of vitamin D3 daily for three months, and the control group used placebo for the same period of time. Their stature and weight were recorded by digital instruments without the shoes with the least clothes. The next step was to train the food record of the students to the parents so that 3 food records were taken during the study. 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25(OH)D3), TAC (Total antioxidant capacity), MDA (Malondialdehyde), CAT (Catalase) and GSH (Glutathione) of the participants of both groups were measured before and after the intervention.
Results: In this Study, both groups were adjusted in terms of their age, gender and BMI. The mean score of the variables of leisure time and sport showed no significant difference in the both groups. Comparing the average TAC and MDA between the two groups before intervention didn’t show a significant difference (P1TAC=0.06) (P1MDA=0.32), but after the intervention, the vitamin D intake group showed the increase in TAC and decrease in MDA (P2TAC=0.001) (P2 MDA=0.01). Moreover, CAT and GSH showed no significant difference in the two groups before and after intervention.
Conclusion: Vitamin D supplementation for 3 months led to the improvement of antioxidant capacity by the increase of TAC and decrease of MDA, but the CAT and GSH showed no significant change in the mentioned period of time.

Abstract

Background: Nutrition education and introduction of procedures for choosing healthier food have an important role to reduce the rate of non-communicable diseases. It was shown the amount of risk factors of non-communicable diseases such as energy, salt, sugar, fat and trans fatty acid on the traffic light of food labelling. The status of risk is presented through three colors of red, yellow and green that are the signs of risk, precautious and safe use of food. The object of this study was to evaluate the influence of education on the knowledge, attitude and practices of Isfahan University of Medical Sciences students to the traffic light on food labeling.
Methods: This project was an empirical study performed by random sampling of 379 students of nine schools in Isfahan University of Medical Sciences from January 2017 to March 2018. The knowledge, attitude and practices of students toward the traffic light were assessed by self-administered and structured questionnaire. Education was performed face to face with the usage of pamphlet. In the period of three to six months, questionnaires were refilled out by students to determine knowledge, attitude and practice. Descriptive statistics were calculated using SPSS in mean± SD. Paired t-test was performed to assess the influence of education in total score of knowledge, attitudes and practices in test-retest. P value was considered less than 0.05 as statistically significant.
Results: Before education, the average of scores for knowledge, attitude and practice was 1.12±0.84, 14.44±4 and 2.25±2.2, respectively. Afterwards, the scores were increased to 11.72±0.75, 18.67±3.18 and 17.69±4.7 after education. Significant difference was observed in the scores of knowledge, attitude and practice of students before and after education (P<0.05).
Conclusion: Education of traffic light had a significant role in the improvement of knowledge, attitude and to some extent of practice of students in selection of healthier food.

Abstract

Background: Iron deficiency in the body is the main cause of anemia, and iron supplementation is probably the best option for iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia in women and young children. This study aimed to explain the challenges of national iron supplementation in female school’s base on the perspective of the stakeholders.
Methods: This study was a qualitative study of content analysis. The data of this study were conducted by focus group discussion, semi-deep interviews with the participation of the target community of students, parents of students, school principals and school health instructors, general manager of the Office of Community Nutrition (Department of Education) includes manager, deputy and school health officer, from October 2016 to January 2017 in city of Gonabad, Iran. Participants were selected through targeted sampling and data collection continued to saturation. Data were analyzed using contractual content analysis method based on five steps of Graneheim and Lundman. Data management was done with NVivo software, version 11 (QSR International, Victoria, Australia), but data analysis and interpretation were done manually.
Results: The findings from group discussions and semi-deep interviews with stakeholders were categorized into twelve themes. The main strength, perceived in "Perceived Individual Benefits" and "Perceived Executive or Management Benefits". The main perceived weakness was "Physical Disadvantages", "Tablets Disadvantages", "Disadvantages of Programming" and "Disadvantages of the Program". The main perceived barriers was "Educational and Information Barriers", "Barriers of Pill Consumption" and "Management and Administrative Barriers". "Modifying the Executive Program", "Individual Perception Modification" and "Reform the Shape of Pills" were suggested as a corrective mechanism from participants’ view point.
Conclusion: According to the results of this study, the most important challenges of the "Schools Iron Aid National Plan" were "Educational and Information Barriers", "Administrative barriers", and "Barriers to Pill Consumption". Therefore, in order to do better, the Iron Supplementation Program requires intervention at individual, interpersonal, inter-organizational, and intra-organizational levels to provide comprehensive support for the program and, ultimately, increase program productivity.

Abstract

Background: Changing the mental structure of students and identifying creativity inhibitors are essential for academic survival and the pursuit of innovation. This study aimed to identify the inhibitory cognitive factors in medical students.
Methods: This study was a directional qualitative content analysis that conducted based on scientific literature review and opinions of experts in a semiformal expert panel by using semi-structured interviews ranging from 20 to 70 minutes from February 2015 to October 2016. Seventeen talented students were interviewed and conversations were recorded with a digital voice recorder at the Exceptional Talent Development Center (ETDC). The extraction and content analysis was continuously done by listening and writing through several times. The students were in various medical disciplines, and most of them were first rank students in scientific performance and they were collaborating with ETDC.
Results: The inhibition variables of creativity were classified in the four main subcategories according to the semantic relationship and after compression, these classes of inhibitory factors included: teacher-related inhibitors, teaching and assessment methods related inhibitors, student barriers and inhibitors of the university's educational system. Finally, 10 codes were extracted from the 4th categories, which were mentioned as inhibitory variables of creativity. The teachers' lack of enthusiasm with the new ideas, the lack of creativity in the academic context and the lack of motivation among the students were the main inhibitors of creativity that were extracted from interviewing with talented students.
Conclusion: In this study, the most important cognitional inhibitory factors in creativity promotion were the inhibitors related to the teacher’s character and his attitude to creativity, methods of teaching and the university environment. Planning for the removal of these barriers in medical students recommended.

Abstract

Background: Color vision has an important role in daily activities and also learning special talents in different jobs, especially in the field of medicine. However, they are many people all over the world that has no insight into their color blindness and choose the study fields that are completely dependent on vision. Due to the importance of color vision in the field of medicine, we conducted this study to evaluate the prevalence of color blindness in Mashhad medical school, Mashhad, Iran.
Methods: A total number of 200 male medical students from June to September 2016 were enrolled in this study by a simple sampling method. Ishihara test was applied for the evaluation of color vision. Required data were written down in questionnaire sheets, which were designed for this study. A T-test was used to compare the mean value of quantitative data. Chi-square test and Fisher exact test were used to compare the qualitative data in different groups.
Results: The results of the current study showed that among 200 participants who were evaluated in this study, 8 of them (4%) suffered from color blindness. Among these 8 color blinded cases, 6 of them (75%) had the insight into their disease while 2 of them (25%) had no insight into their condition. Moreover, the results of evaluating the type of color blindness showed that 7 of them had green-red color blindness, while 1 of them had complete color blindness.
Conclusion: Comparing results of the current study with previous ones, we concluded that color blindness has a lower prevalence in our study population (4%), in comparison with the general population (8%). Moreover, obtained results about patients’ insight into their disease showed that a considerable percentage of cases (25%) had no insight to their disease, which indicates the importance of conducting color blindness screening test for medical students due to the importance of color vision in the field of medicine.

Abstract

Background: According to numerous research related to learning styles and also the difference of these styles in students, this study was designed in order to determine the status of learning styles in medical students in Iran.
Methods: This study was conducted as a systematic review and meta-analysis. Searching for articles in this study was done from September 24 to October 15, 2022 in databases: Proquest, PubMed, Iran medex, Scopus, Sid, Magiran, Google Scholar, Eric and medical education journals. The research environment of Iran has been Mashhad. Using the PICOTS model, the keywords: learning styles, clubs, medical students were used to search the mentioned databases. OR, AND operators and possible combinations of keywords were used when searching for articles in databases. The extracted articles were first evaluated in terms of the research title, then the abstract of the article, and finally the text of the article using the "PRISMA Checklist". In each stage, repetitive articles and articles that did not mention the percentage of learning styles were excluded from the study, and the articles that met the inclusion criteria were stored in the (EndNote software, version 20, Clarivate, USA), and at the end, 53 articles were analyzed.
Results: The results of the study showed that the most used learning styles among students of medical sciences in Iran was convergent learning style (32% with 95% confidence interval). In the investigation of the adaptive learning style in the fields of basic sciences during the years 2006 to 2021, the percentage of using this style increased and this trend was statistically significant (P=0.0078).
Conclusion: According to the findings of the study, the most used learning style in medical sciences in Iran is convergent learning style, and considering the characteristics of convergent people, it is necessary to provide effective and efficient training in medical sciences to Students' learning styles should be given special attention so that training can be guided based on their learning styles.
