Abstract

Primary school students constitute an important demographic category: the fact that they are going through a phase of rapid physical, social and mental growth makes them especially vulnerable to the obnoxious effects of disease and malnutrition. In Iran, one of the major causes of malnutrition and growth deficiency is lack of food. The objective of this study was using anthropometric techniques to assess nutritional status in primary school students at Bandar Abbas. This is a cross-sectional study involving 1300 subjects selected by cluster sampling. Indices used in this study were weight for age (W/A), weight for height (W/H), and height for age (H/A). Malnutrition was defined as an index value more than 2 standard deviations below the standard level. We found wasting (W/H) in 15.7%, stunting (H/A) in 11.7% and underweight (W/A) 21.2% of the subjects, with no significant difference in nutritional status between boys and girls. Prevalence of all three types of malnutrition increased with age and school grade. Students who had received nutrition education showed better nutrition status compared to those without such background education. Measures to control malnutrition can include education, proper recording and follow-up of nutrition and growth data in the form of health files, and nutritional interventions. The latter is particularly relevant in higher age groups and school grades.

Abstract

Diabetes is a chronic disease of lifelong duration, and its management requires a fundamental change in the patient’s lifestyle. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a health education program on the knowledge, behavior, HBA1c and health related quality of life of diabetic patients after following the patients’ participation in the program. The study population consisted of type 2 diabetic patients attending at Bandar Abbas diabetic clinic. Eighty patients were randomly selected and they were randomly assigned to two groups, 40 to the intervention and 40 to the control group. At the initial visit and 4 months after education, knowledge and behavior were assessed by questionnaire HBA1c measured by colorimetric method and health-related quality of life assessed by means of WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire. The education sessions for intervention group were held at diabetic clinic. The 40 patients that assigned to the control group gave the appropriate consent and completed questionnaires at baseline and after 4 months. The intervention group had statistically significant increase in the mean of knowledge score from 6.7 to 15.8(p=0.000), physical health from 64.7 to 77.2 (p=0.000) and psychological health from 56 to 71.4(p=0.000) and had statistically significant reduction in the mean of HBA1c from 9.4 to 8.2 (p= 0.000).Also the intervention group had statistically significant increase in self-monitoring blood glucose, weight monitoring, exercise and diet. Patients in control group showed no significant changes in the outcomes measured except for knowledge.

Abstract

  Background and Aim: In recent years great emphasis has been put on the importance of a healthy lifestyle. This study aimed to assess the lifestyle of high school and pre-university students in Bandar-Abbas, Iran.

  Materials and Methods: Using a multistage sampling method a total of 410 high school and pre-university students in Bandar-Abbas, Iran were selected. To assess the lifestyle of the students the Adolescent Health Promotion Scale was used. This 40-item scale assesses six health-promoting behaviors, including those related to nutrition, social support, personal responsibility, health valuation, physical activity, and stress management.

  Results: The mean age of the students (49.8% males and 50.2% females) was

  16.5 (SD=1.34) years. The data showed the mean score of the total scale to be 64.89 out of 100. The mean scores (out of 100) of the subscales of nutrition, social support, personal responsibility, health valuation, physical activity and stress management were 71.06, 63.00, 63.12, 82.11, 41.49, and 68.58, respectively.

  Conclusions: The findings of this study reveal that the health-promoting behaviors of high school students living in Bandar-Abbas are not, on the whole, desirable. The regular physical activity subscale had the least score, which shows that a sedentary lifestyle is a common, serious problem among thestudents.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Health literacy implies the achievement, processing and perception of fundamental information and services required for making appropriate health-related decisions. Due to the high significance of health literacy during pregnancy and its direct effect on fetus, the present research was conducted to investigate the health literacy of pregnant women visiting medical centers in Bandar Abbas, Iran in 2015.
Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional descriptive-analytic study conducted on 250 pregnant women visiting the healthcare centers in Bandar Abbas, Iran selected by mixed sampling (both clustering and simple random). The data were collected using an adult health literacy questionnaire and analyzed using SPSS version 16, the statistical tests being independent-sample t-test, ANOVA, Tukey test and linear regression.
Results: The average age of the pregnant women was 31.61±7.45 years. The proportions of the women with an adequate, borderline and inadequate level of literacy were 52%, 20.8% and 27.2%, respectively. A statistically significant association was found between health literacy and education (p<0.001), age (p<0.001), occupation (p<0.001) and the quality of healthcare provision during pregnancy (p<0.001).
Conclusion: The results reveal that the mothers’ health literacy is inadequate or at borderline. Based on these results the following are recommended in an attempt to promote health literacy of pregnant women: 1. revising/simplifying teaching materials, including both oral and pictorial, in addition to written materials in the form of posters, pamphlets and brochures; 2. promoting communication skills of health workers/mothers.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Considering the lack of attention to the health promotion of adolescents due to their perception of being healthy in most countries of the world, we aimed to evaluate the predictors of adolescent health promoting lifestyle through path analysis based on IMB model.

Materials and Methods: This is a descriptive-analytic study on 400 high school students in Andimeshk city in two urban and rural areas. The sample size was obtained using the Cochran formula.They were selected by classified random sampling. In this study, demographic data, information about IMB model structures and student adherence to healthy lifestyle were collected in four areas nutrition, physical activity, stress control and responsibility. Correlation between total structures was analyzed using SPSS-23 software. Lisrel 8.5 software. Meanwhile, the relationships between variables were analyzed using Path analysis to fit and approve model fit model using LISREL8.8 software.

Results: All structures of IMB model had a Significant relationship with adolescent healthy lifestyle. Self-efficacy structure had the most predictive power. In general, self-efficacy variables, 75%, motivation 66%, and 50% knowledge had a positive and significant effect on behavior. This model was able to explain 71% of the variance in adolescent lifestyle behavior. Also, in this model, the level of self-efficacy variance (behavioral skills), 52%,, And motivation variance was explained 57%. Motivation and knowledge indirectly influenced the lifestyle behavior (behavior) by 55% and 50%, respectively.

Conclusion: The findings of this study showed that the IMB model has a good application for explaining and predicting the healthy lifestyle of adolescents. Accordingly, it is recommended that health planners apply the IMB model in order to promote adolescent lifestyle in this population.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Food preferences and health literacy ─ key determinants of food choices in childhood and adolescence ─ are determinants of chronic diseases in adulthood. This study aimed to determine associations between food preferences, health literacy and body mass index (BMI) among elementary school students in Malekan city, east Azarbayejan Province, Iran in 2021-2022.
Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional descriptive-analytical study included 582 male and female primary-schoolers in the fourth, fifth and sixth grades in both the public and private  schools in Malekan County (Malekan, Lilan, and Mubarakshahr) selected by the two-stage randomized cluster method. A questionnaire including background questions and questions about health literacy and a researcher-made checklist of food preferences was used to collect data online using the Pros-Online Platform. The content validity ratio and index were used to determine validity and Cronbach's alpha index to check for the reliability of the questionnaire (CVI=0.98, CVR=0.91, Cronbach's alpha > 0.7). Data were analyzed using Mann-Whitney, t-test, one-way analysis of variance, Kruskal-Wallis and Chi-square tests at a significance level of 0.05 using SPSS 26.
Results: The average health literacy score of all the students was rather low (52.9±00.33), that of the female students (55.7±36.49) being slightly higher than that of the boys (49. 9±29.79). Further analysis of the data showed that there was a statistically significant relationship between the students' food preferences and health literacy variables (p<0.001). Furthermore, statistically significant relationships were observed between the students' BMI and their food preferences (p˂0.001) and health literacy (p˂0.001).
Conclusion: Considering the low level of health literacy of the adolescents and a positive relationship between health literacy, food preferences and BMI in adolescents, it can be concluded that increasing their health literacy will improve their healthy food choices. Therefore, it seems that interventions based on a theoretical framework aiming at increasing the students’ health literacy and improving their food preferences can be beneficial to them as a potential strategy for improving their healthy eating patterns resulting in preventing overweight and obesity.

Abstract

Background and Aim: The nursing profession, as a vital pillar of the healthcare system, plays a crucial role in delivering health and medical services. In clinical settings, teamwork and conflict management are key factors for improving the quality of care and reducing workplace stress. A positive attitude toward teamwork can enhance conflict management skills and contribute to higher job satisfaction among nurses. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between teamwork attitude and conflict management among nurses, to better understand this association and propose strategies to improve team collaboration and reduce conflicts in healthcare settings.
Materials and Methods: This quantitative descriptive-analytical cross-sectional study was conducted in 2025 in Tehran. After obtaining the necessary permissions, the researcher visited three hospitals affiliated with Azad University and distributed online questionnaires among nurses. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS software.
Results: Findings indicated that 63% of the nurses were female, and 44% were aged between 30 and 40 years. Eighty-five percent held a bachelor's degree, 49.5% were formally employed, and 37.5% worked at Farhangian Hospital. A strong positive correlation was observed between teamwork attitude and conflict management (r = 0.815). Significant differences in conflict management were noted across age groups (p = 0.03) and work experience (p = 0.03).
Conclusion: The results suggest that demographic factors such as age, marital status, and employment type significantly influence nurses’ conflict management and teamwork. Specifically, experience, communication skills developed with age, and social support among married nurses enhance team interactions. Moreover, cultural and organizational factors affect the impact of gender and work environment on conflict management. Therefore, targeted training and the establishment of supportive structures for diverse groups are essential for promoting effective teamwork in healthcare settings.
