Abstract

Background and Aim: Children, who go to school without breakfast or have breakfast that is not nutritious enough, will not be able to meet their nutritional needs for growth. Nutrition education can be instrumental in providing knowledge, desirable attitude, and changing behavior concerning breakfast. The purpose of this study was to compare two method of nutrition education – booklet and lecture- on practice of fourth grade girls.
Material and Methods:
Using three stage random sampling a total of 150 students were randomly selected and divided into 3 equal groups booklet, lecture, and control. At the beginning of the study, an assessment of practice was conducted for all groups. Education through booklet and lecture was provided. Two weeks after the education, an assessment of practice was conducted again. To collect data two types of questionnaires - general and practice - were used.
Results: The result showed a significant difference of means of practice (P=0.002) score among three groups. The mean score of practice in the lecture against the control group and that of the booklet against control group increased 0.84 (P=0.005), 0.76 (P=0.014) respectively, but no significant increase was observed between lecture against the booklet group. After omitting the effect of independent variables in question, education still increases the difference of means of practice scores significantly (P=<0.05). Lectures are a more dynamic method for nutrition education.
Conclustion:
Considering the large number of students in primary schools and lack of access to a direct method of education, using booklets is an appropriate method.

Abstract

Background and Aim: Body mass index (BMI) is a generally accepted indicator of body weight and obesity. A BMI>30 indicates obesity, which is regarded as a risk factor for many diseases, because their pathogeneses are associated with increasing numbers of free radicals derived from oxygen. The present study was a clinical trial carried out in order to study the effects of weight loss on enzymatic antioxidants and its association with dietary intakes of copper, zinc, iron, selenium and, magnesium in obese women.
Materials and Methods: Thirty obese women, 19-50 years old, of whom informed consent was obtained, were included in the study. Information was collected on their general characteristics, and anthropometric measurements were made. A diet with a 500- to 1000-calorie deficit was recommended to the subjects, on the basis of micronutrient intakes estimated through a 24-hour dietary recall questionnaire 3 days before and after the intervention. The aim was to bring about a weight loss of 10%. A 10-ml blood sample was taken from each subject, before and after intervention, for enzymatic measurement of enzymatic antioxidants in the red blood cells.
Results:
Weight loss caused a significant increase (p<0.01) in the mean glutathione reductase (GR) and catalase (CAT) no statistically significant change occurred in the mean values of superoxide dismutase (SOD) or glutathione peroxidase (GPX). The only association between the enzymes and trace elements (Cu, Zn, Fe, Mg, Se) was a negative linear correlation between daily zinc intake and GPX before intervention (r=0.395, p<0.05)
Conclusion: A 10% reduction in body weight might be an effective step toward increasing levels of enzymatic antioxidants which would minimize injuries caused by free radicals and reduce oxidative stress in obese women. Attention should be paid to the dietary intakes of micronutrients essential for the activities of these enzymes.

Abstract

 

  Background and Aim: Food insecurity is a major public health problem in developing and developed countries , underlying developmental and psychological problems , nutrient deficiencies and chronic diseases . The aim of this study was to determine food security status and factors associated with food insecurity in households with children 4-5 years old under coverage of urban health centers and health houses in Mehriz, Iran.

  Materials and Methods : This cross-sectional study was conducted in 2013 on 500 households with children 4-5 years old under coverage of urban health centers and health houses in Mehriz, Iran. The subjects were selected by cluster sampling. To determine household food security, the USDA 18-item food security questionnaire was used. Economic and socio-cultural status were assessed using a general-information questionnaire. The data obtained were analyzed using the Chi-square and independent t-tests and multiple logistic regression.

  Results: The prevalence of household food insecurity was 39.6% (food insecurity without hunger 23.2%, and moderate and severe food insecurity with hunger 15% and 1.4%, respectively). Food insecurity was negatively correlated with parental education, parental occupational, monthly household income and maternal height ( p <0.008) and positively correlated with maternal age and family size ( p <0.004) . Based on the results of multivariate logistic regression , father's occupation and education level were predictors of food insecurity .

  Conclusion: The prevalence of food insecurity in the population studied is high. Based on the results of this study, promotion of parental education, family job security and improved economic status, and control of family size are essential measures that should taken to improve household food security.

Abstract

Background and Aim:  The health, safety and environment (HSE) system is an integrated system that tries to create a healthy, pleasant and lively environment with no accidents, damages and injuries by converging and synergizing human resources, facilities and equipment. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the validation of the revised scale of HSE performance.
Materials and Methods: This was a descriptive and analytical research conducted using the psychometric method. The statistical population included all workers of the steel companies in Kerman Province, Iran in 1400. Using the cluster sampling method based on psychometric criteria a sample of 100 was selected for the convergent validity and a sample of 578 for the construct validity section. Data were collected through two scales of HSE performance and job stress (Cohen et al., 1983). Content validity, convergent validity and factor analysis methods were used to check the validity of the scale. The reliability of the scale was checked using the internal homogeneity and classification reliability (dividing in 2 haves).  The SPSS version 22 software was used for data analysis.
Results: Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the six-factor model. The questionnaire was used along with the 35-item occupational stress questionnaire of Cohen et al. (1983) which had good reliability and validity. The alpha coefficient obtained for the whole scale was 0.79, and for the subscales as follows: resilience 0.93, demand 0.90, role 0.93, control 0.85, support 0.72 and relationships 79.0. In addition, the reliability coefficient of the scale was also calculated using the classification method. The classification coefficient for the first and second halves of the data was 0.87 and 0.62, respectively, the correlation between the two halves being 0.248. These findings indicated a favorable internal consistency coefficient for the HSE performance scale (P<0.001).
Conclusion: According to the findings obtained based on the HSE validation, which showed that the fit of the model is high and also that the evaluation of HSE performance has a great role in the health of employees, more attention should be paid to the establishment and implementation of HSE management in Kerman steel companies.

Abstract

Background and Aim: This study aimed to assess and prioritize the health needs of a community served by the Imamzadeh Ghasem Health Center in Tehran city, Iran.
Materials and Methods: This study was conducted based on the North Carolina model for comprehensive community health assessment. General information and available facilities were extracted from secondary sources, while insights into specific community needs were gathered through interviews with 76 individuals representing diverse demographics. The assessment was made by secondary data analysis and direct interviews.
Finally, the prioritization of health needs of the community was based on a scoring system based on severity, extent, and ease of being solved.
Results: The findings revealed that sewage problems, construction issues and waste management were considered to be the primary health concerns in the region. Comparative analysis with the situation in other regions in Iran emphasizes the unique challenges faced by the community in the present study.
Conclusion: The prioritized health issues highlight the community's urgent needs, requiring targeted interventions. Proposed solutions include legal measures, public education and municipal interventions to address the sewage, construction and waste management problems.
